AB - Epoxy-rich carbon-based composites are well recognized materials in industries owing to their good mechanical properties and thermal stability. Here, dielectric properties of composites based on bisphenol-A-epoxy resin loaded with 5, 6, 10, and 15 wt% of graphite flakes (GF) have been studied. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity, dielectric loss, and ac conductivity have been examined in temperature (−103 to 97°C) and frequency (20 Hz–200 kHz) range. Influence of the filler surface chemistry have been studied for composites loaded with 5 wt% GF obtained: (i) under wet milling, without or with adding Triton-100x as a surfactant, or (ii) under dry milling in the presence of KOH. The composite made of epoxy loaded with 5 wt% exfoliated expanded graphite flakes (EEG), was also prepared. The surface treatment with KOH notably increased dielectric constant of the composite, keeping low dielectric loss, while treatment with Triton-100x significantly increased tanδ. The composite loaded with exfoliated expanded graphite shows higher ac conductivity than those obtained with flaky graphite, GF. Possibility to change dielectric properties of the composites without changing the loading content can be used as an approach in tailoring one with desired dielectric properties.

AB - In this paper, a new simple and environmentally friendly treatment technique for obtaining polymer nanocomposites with appropriate dielectric properties has been presented. Sheets of isotactic polypropylene and atactic polystyrene were immersed in 3 saturated water solutions of alkali metal salts (LiCl, NaCl, and KCl) at 2 fixed temperatures (23°C and 90°C), and 3 DC electrical potentials (+4 kV, −4 kV, and ground potential) were applied. A quantification of alkali metals in the polymer sheets was conducted by inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectrometry. The obtained concentration values were from 7.38·10−9 mol/cm3to 1.25·10−7 mol/cm3. The qualitative analysis of potassium distribution in the polymer matrix was conducted by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry cross-sectional record. The relative dielectric constant (ε′) of samples was investigated in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 9 MHz at the constant temperature of 22°C. Stable values of ε′ in fully measured frequency range were observed for both pure and treated samples. Next, the results of the dielectric spectroscopy measurements were compared and established the kind of treatment that provided the highest value of ε′. The relationship between the concentrations of alkali metals and the values of relative dielectric constant was determined for the samples obtained by a treatment at 90°C and +4 kV.

AB - Electrical AC conductivity of semiconducting low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-carbon black (CB) composites has been studied in the frequency range between 24 Hz and 75 kHz and the temperature range from 295 to 355 K. The composites were gamma irradiated at room temperature to different absorbed doses up to 300 kGy. The effects of gamma irradiation on the AC conductivity at room temperature and the conductive temperature coefficients (CTC) were observed. It was found that the effect of gamma irradiation on the stability of AC conductivity at elevated temperature (355 K) is dependent on the carbon black content and the gamma irradiation dose. AB - The surface dielectric properties of acid-etched low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were analysed in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 200 kHz. Samples were treated with various acids for a period of one hour, at temperatures ranging from 20 to 70 degrees C. After the treatment, the samples were analysed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealing chemical and crystallinity changes on the surface, as a direct result of the treatment. The sample surfaces were analysed using atomic force microscopy. The micrographs show that the acid treatment increases the roughness of the samples. Compared to untreated LDPE, the etched samples may exhibit significantly different conductance values at low frequencies. It is also observed that an increase in the acid treatment temperature can result in lower values of conductance and susceptance compared to untreated samples. LDPE films with low value of surface AC conductivity after acid treatment are potentially useful substrates for high-speed electro-sensing applications. The presented results indicate that a suitable choice of acid treatment of LDPE can effect surface polarization while preserving low values of surface AC conductivity of the polymer. AB - This study describes the possibility of dielectric characterization of the initial stages of ageing in an low-density polyethylene (LDPE) + graphite composite, which is not possible using the standard method of dielectric spectroscopy. It is shown that the differences between the delay angles, Delta phi = phi(TRI)-phi(SIN), obtained using triangular and sinusoidal excitations on the composite samples, shows a maximum, and at the same time the position of this maximum shows more sensitivity to changes in the electrical properties of the material caused by ageing than other dielectric parameters. In order to clarify the applied methodology, a comparative analysis of the dielectric properties of other polymers poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a conductive polymer composite (LDPE + carbon black) with respect to the application of sinusoidal and triangular electrical signals was carried out. Based on the presented results, we believe that the position of the peak in the frequency spectra of the difference between the delay angles obtained by using triangular and sinusoidal signals may be a suitable parameter for the dielectric characterization of polymeric materials.

AB - In this article, in order to obtain tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3, structural investigations of mechanically activated BaTiO3 powder have been performed. A mercury porosimetry analysis and scanning electron microscopy method have been applied for determination of the specific pore volume, porosity and microstructure morphology of the samples. The lattice vibration spectra of nonactivated and activated powders, their phase composition, lattice microstrains and the mean size of coherently diffracting domains were examined by Raman spectroscopy and the X-ray powder diffraction method. The average crystal structure of obtained nanocrystalline powders, estimated from X-ray diffraction data, gave evidence of retained, but slightly sustained tetragonality of powders, even for particles as small as similar to 30 nm. Raman spectroscopy also gave clear evidence for local tetragonal symmetries, in particular through the presence of a band at similar to 307 cm(-1). (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - The influence of gamma radiation on the structure and glass transition behaviour of poly-L-lactide (PLLA) has been studied. Since PLLA exposed to high-energy radiation in the presence of air is prone to chain scission reactions and large degradation, changes in molecular weight were obtained by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Alterations in the glass transition behaviour were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The apparent activation energy, Delta H*, for the glass transition was determined on the basis of the heating rate dependence of the glass transition temperature, T(g). Our findings support the fact that chain scission is the main reason for the decrease of Tg and Delta H* with the absorbed dose. At low doses, despite large changes in molecular weight, only small alterations are observed in the glass transition temperature and apparent activation energy. Further increase in the absorbed dose introduces not only significant changes in the molecular weight but also in the glass transition temperature and the activation energy. Such glass transition behaviour is a manifestation of a well-known effect of molecular weight on Tg, postulated by the Fox-Flory equation. However, all the observed alterations are small and tolerable at absorbed doses required for sterilization (up to 25 kGy in most circumstances). Furthermore, this study reveals that the radiation-induced changes in the molecular weight and the glass transition temperature occur in a predictable and fairly accurate manner. Therefore, gamma radiation can be used not only for sterilization but also for tailoring desirable end-use properties of PLLA based implants.

AB - The influence of mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill on the change of the structure of BaTiO3 powders has been investigated. The particle size distribution of the nonactivated and activated samples was measured by a particle dimension laser analyzer. The mercury porosimetry method has been applied for determination of the surface area of the samples, bulk density, specific pore volumes, total porosity and the pore size distributions. Formation of paramagnetic centers and the change of the IR active modes was investigated by EPR and IR measurements. Semi-quantitative comparison of the BaCO3 and OH- group presence in IR spectra was calculated. The investigation showed that mechanical activation of BaTiO3 has a pronounced influence on the change of the powder particles structure and enables establishing the directions of possible BaTiO3 ceramics materials properties prognosis according to the synthesis-structure correlation. AB - The effects of gamma irradiation in air and accelerated aging of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were studied through dielectric loss (tan 6) analysis in the temperature range from 25 to 325 K and using thermally stimulated discharge current (TSDC) measurements. The radiation-induced oxidation was observed using IR spectroscopy. The influence of radiation dose and accelerated aging on the intensities and the positions of the gamma and beta dielectric relaxation maxima were correlated with maxima of TSDC measurements, and found to be strongly dependent upon the changes in the microstructure of the amorphous phase and on the surface of the crystallites induced by oxidation and crosslinking.
