AB - In one of the largest agricultural companies in Serbia, with over 2000 ha of soya plantations, there are 4000 t/year of baled soya straw produced. Soya straw biomass is planned to be used as a renewable energy source for heating the greenhouses, with 5 ha in area. Therefore, efforts have been made to develop a technology for utilizing large bales of soya straw for energy production. In the first phase, a demo energy production facility-furnace was developed and built. The facility had been tested in order to examine the quality of combustion of large soya straw bales. Since experimental results of testing of this facility have proved to be very satisfactory, in the second phase of the development, a hot water boiler of similar characteristics (burning soya straw bales, with dimensions 0.7 x 1.2 x 2.7 m(3)) has been designed. AB - The paper presents a fluid-porous medium model, developed for stationary 2D predictions of fluidized bed. Dense phase is considered a fixed porous medium, while gas-particle interactions and bubbling phase are modeled regarding balance of friction forces between gas and particles. Like referent measurements, predictions of lateral jet injection into the bed suggest the jet penetration length is strongly affected by fluid velocity at the nozzle outlet, while influences of the nozzle vertical position and inclination angle are not significant. Also, the fluid velocity and the nozzle vertical position exert pronounced effects on mixing rate of components (fuel and oxidizer). (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Based on investigations of ash deposit formation, semi-empirical indicators for slagging and fouling, based on ash chemical composition and its fusion temperature, have been determined These criteria-indicators, in suggested limits, describe the coals on which they are based (North-American and British) well. However, the experience in the thermal power production sector of Serbia shows that their literal application to domestic coals does not produce satisfactory results. This contribution provides an analysis of applicability and the choice of criteria that are suitable for Serbian coals. The focus of the contribution is on coal slagging indicators, since slagging has much heavier consequences on heat transfer inside the steam boiler, and on boiler operation as a whole. The basis for the analysis of chosen criteria comprises of the results of investigations of four coalfields - Kostolac, Kolubara, Kosovo (Serbia), and Ugljevik (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

AB - Experimental investigations of the influence of excess oxygen coefficient, H2O/coal mass ratio using high-temperature steam, mean mass diameter of pulverized coal and coal size fraction on basic characteristics of coal gasification were performed. Experiments were carried out on a laboratory scale (0.09 m i.d. x 1.5 m high) coal gasification apparatus with lignite type of coal. Influence of steam was realized through comparison of results obtained from experiments with (H2O/Coal = 0.287 kg kg(-1)) and without steam addition (H2O/coal = 0.024 kg kg(-1)). High values of carbon conversion, obtained both for finely ground and for coarse pulverized coal points to the easiness of lignite gasification, i.e. to its high suitability for gasification. AB - Due to a significant increase in electricity prices during the last decade and insufficient production capacity of the electric power industry in Serbia, many households that are currently using electric heat storage furnaces for heating have been forced to find an alternative solution for heating. A possible solution is replacing electric heating appliances with similar solid fuel-fired ones. Existing solid fuel-fired furnaces are often unsatisfactory with respect to their efficiencies and flue gas emissions. A prototype of a new concept of heat storage, solid fuel-fired furnace has been developed to meet these growing needs, providing electricity saving together with considerable environmental benefits. In order to examine furnace performance, efficiency and environmental aspects, and to assess the influence of air excess control in the furnace on the efficiency and flue gas emissions, numerous experimental tests were conducted. The amount of combustion air, the flue gas flow rate and the fuel feeding regime have been adjusted in order to keep the flue gas oxygen content in a relatively narrow range, thus obtaining controlled combustion conditions and, correspondingly, lower carbon monoxide emission and higher furnace efficiency. In this way, the furnace was made able to respond to the changes in heating needs, fuel quality and other parameters, which is considered to be advantageous in comparison with similar solid-fuel fired furnaces. AB - A prototype of a solid fuel thermo-accumulating furnace has been developed. In order to achieve a higher combustion efficiency, a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst in the form of 3 +/- 0.3 mm spheres was applied, which enabled further combustion of flue gases within the furnace. Experimental investigation of the influence of the catalyst on the conversion of CO has been done for different operation regimes and positions of the catalyst. Paper presents selected results regarding CO emission during wood and coal combustion. Investigations suggest a considerable effect of the catalyst and a strong influence of the catalyst position to CO emission reduction. The microstructure of the catalyst beads, characterized by selective chemisorption of CO, has shown the decrease of the number of Pt sites as a consequence of block-age by coke deposits formed during the combustion of solid fuel.
