AB - Nowadays, application of nanotechnologies is an emerging trend in defense technologies, as well as in all other fields. In previous years there has been an extensive research ongoing on the possibilities of application of nanotechnologies in order to enhance the armaments and military equipment. Among the application of nanofuels and nanomodifiers in energetic materials, active nanocatalysts of self-decontamination in CBRN protection, nanoreinforcements of composites and coatings, one group of nanomaterials stood out for its possible multidisciplinary applications and efficiency. Tungsten disulfide in the form of inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles and inorganic nanotubes (IF-WS2 and INT-WS2), was previously known as a solid lubricant, extensively used by NASA, military, aerospace and automotive industry. WS2 comes in different shapes and forms and all of them are known for their good mechanical properties, but in these two nano-forms it has extraordinary impact, pressure and heat resistance, dry lubrication performance, and special conductive properties. In this paper a survey is presented of recent research of tungsten disulfide nanostructures potential use as in defense technologies, from dry lubrication, over reinforcement of polymers for binding systems, of composites for ballistic protection and aircraft construction, to camouflage protection coatings.
