AB - The main objective of this study was to estimate the environmental and health risk of the Šar Mountains (Kosovo) for depleted uranium contamination. The risk assessment of the contamination is needed since, in the spring of 1999, conflict with bombarding took place in the territory of the Western Balkans, during which depleted uranium ammunition was used. In Serbia and Montenegro, such tests were performed; based on them, some territories were decontaminated. Šar Mountains is particularly important as it is one of the few water-rich areas in Kosovo. Therefore, soil and water samples were taken from characteristic places in the Šar Mountains aquatorium. Tests of the samples were performed under well-controlled conditions. The measurement uncertainty was less than 5%. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that there was no contamination of the Šar Mountains with depleted uranium. This conclusion can be extended to the broader area around the Šar Mountains, as it is a safe area surrounded by high mountains.

AB - The research presents an experiment with a model of an electronic generator for energy injection into the plasma of a fusion reactor. By recording a non-ionizing field in the vicinity of a fusion reactor, it was determined that this field has an extremely high growth rate. At the site of the maximum intensity of the field of non-ionizing radiation, commercial surge arresters with a flexible model of surge arresters were used for experimentation. It has been found that the commercial surge arresters have an efficiency of about 20%. For the efficiency of the flexible model, it was found to be slightly less than 40% (and to be achieved by the application of alpha particle radiation). Since neither of these efficiencies guarantee reliable operation of the gas-filled surge arrester, it was concluded that essential electronics in the vicinity of the fusion generator must be protected. However, since this protection can only be implemented in a fusion reactor, the fact remains that the environment of such a reactor is extremely contaminated with non-ionizing radiation. Commercial surge voltages are isolated for testing since the protection of electronic circuits from fast overvoltages is a critical point for the functioning of modern electronics.

AB - An increasing degree of both semiconductor components miniaturization and electromagnetic contamination of the environment brings into question the reliability of modern electronic devices. This is particularly emphasized in the functioning conditions of electronic devices related to: nuclear power facilities, medical devices based on nuclear particle and x-ray radiation and the impulse power device. At the same time, non-resistance of semiconductor components to the effects of particle and electromagnetic radiation represents the basic limitation of the expected development of nanoelectronic components. Since the most commonly used material for manufacturing semiconductor components is monocrystalline silicon, it is of great significance to be aware of the influence of nuclear particle and electromagnetic radiation on its relevant. Based on the well-known effects of nuclear (particle) interactions and electromagnetic radiation, the biggest influence on the electrical characteristics of monocrystalline silicon should be expected from neutron (n), x-ray (x) and gamma (gamma) radiation. The evaluation of such influence is often carried out (for economic and security reasons) by simulating the effect of radiation interaction with the material, applying the Monte Carlo method (numerical experiments). The aim of this paper is to evaluate the application of the Monte Carlo method for this class of problems. For this purpose, the effect of n, x and gamma radiation on the electrical characteristics of monocrystalline silicon will be determined, under the well-controlled laboratory conditions. The parameters of the experiment are energy and radiation dose. Electric characteristics of monocrystalline silicon are determined using the four-point method and the thermal method. The corresponding numerical experiments will be conducted simultaneously with these laboratory experiments. On the basis of already obtained statistical samples (laboratory and numerical experiments), the testing of both correlation and regression between them will be carried out. The results will provide an answer to the question concerning the feasibility of the Monte Carlo method for the described class of problems

AB - This paper investigates possible radiation effects in the Cooper-pair insulator state of indium oxide films. Radiation effects are predicted on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations. Results of a combined theoretical and numerical analysis suggest that radiation-induced changes in the investigated films could significantly affect their current-voltage characteristics, and that a transition to a metallic state is possible, due to radiation-induced disruption of the fine-tuned granular structure. Dissociation of Cooper pairs, caused by both the incident radiation and the ions displaced within InOx films, can also destroy the conditions for this specific insulating state to subsist.

AB - Based on the principles derived from Campbells theorem, this paper carries out an analysis of the possibilities of Campbells mean square value signal processing system. The mean square value mode is especially suitable for measurements performed in a mixed radiation field, because the quantities of electrical charge involved in the interactions of the two types of radiation are substantially different. The measuring detector element may be an adequate ionization chamber and/or semiconductor components for mixed n-gamma fields. An examination of the discrimination of gamma in relation to the neutron component in the signal of the detector output was carried out, calculated according to the theoretical model of radiation interaction with the detector. The advantage of the mean square value method was confirmed and it was concluded that the order of n-gamma discrimination in mean square value signal processing is greater than the one rendered by the classical measuring method.

AB - During the last eight years, VINCA Institute-Radiation and Environmental Protection Laboratory has performed environmental spot broadband measurements of extremely low frequency (ELF-50 Hz) electric and magnetic fields and RF (100 kHz-3 GHz) electromagnetic fields in over 35 municipalities in Serbia. These investigations were motivated by the local population requesting information about levels of general public exposure to time-varying electric and magnetic fields in living spaces. This paper presents a summary of values measured in households under overhead power lines. These measurements will be useful in determining the exposure levels of the general public, which in turn determines whether the exposure levels are within reference levels recommended by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) Guidelines. It has turned out that measured values are far below the recommended safe levels.

AB - This paper investigates the conditions for the applicability of the geometrical similarity law to impulse breakdown in gases, using statistical methods necessitated by the stochastic nature of the impulse breakdown voltage. Theoretical analysis in the paper is accompanied by experimental results obtained for geometrically similar systems, i.e. for systems with equal shapes of the macroscopic and microscopic electrical field. The experiments were conducted in controlled laboratory conditions, for a wide range of gas pressure and inter-electrode gap values. Two-electrode systems were used, with both homogeneous and non-homogeneous electrical fields, utilizing SF(6), N(2) and He gases as insulators. Standard lightning and switching voltage impulses were applied, as well as ramp-shaped impulses with different slopes. On the basis of the statistical processing of the obtained experimental results, conclusions regarding the conditions for the applicability of the geometrical similarity law to impulse breakdown in gases are drawn.

AB - 20 kV distribution networks with all its components, such as transformers, switches, cables etc., have existed and been operating safely for many decades. From an economic point of view, it would be convenient to replace the transformer-motor combination by just a single 20 kV asynchronous motor, even if the motor itself were more expensive. The cost of a transformer, facilities and maintenance gained in this way would easily cover the extra costs of a motor. Efficiency considerations also make elimination of the step-down transformer desirable. Furthermore, modern technological advances make the production of 20 kV asynchronous motors possible, which is proved by the existence of 32 kV generators. The main problem lies in overcoming the differences between the construction of the aforementioned network equipment and the high-voltage asynchronous motor. This paper analyzes the weak points in the insulation system of an asynchronous motor, and proposes improvements allowing motor supply voltage to be increased to 20 kV.

AB - This paper investigates the possibility of applying the time enlargement law for predicting how gas-insulated systems would behave when exposed to pulse voltage loads of different shapes. For this purpose, the validity of the time enlargement law in this case has first been tested and the most suitable theoretical distribution function of the breakdown time random variable established. Pulse characteristics of the investigated insulating system have subsequently been determined, by applying the time enlargement law to experimental values of the breakdown time random variable, obtained in measurements with predefined shapes of the voltage load. Pulse characteristics thus obtained were compared with the corresponding pulse characteristics derived from the area law. The results demonstrate the advantages of the time enlargement law method, especially in the case of a non-homogeneous electric field. The experiments were conducted with SF(6) gas, at different values of the pd product (pressure x inter-electrode gap), in a wide frequency range of applied pulse voltages, for a homogeneous, radial and point-plane electrode configuration.

AB - Wide-spread use of metal-oxide varistors for non-linearity over-voltage protection results in a variety of possible working conditions. It is therefore essential to have a thorough insight into their reliability in various exploitation environments. The influences of temperature variation, aging and radiation exposure on metal-oxide varistors characteristics were investigated in this paper. Stable and effective over-voltage protection over a wide temperature range is always a desirable property, one which significantly contributes to overall system reliability. Behaviour of metal-oxide varistors in the temperature range from -50 degrees C to 150 degrees C was investigated. Aging caused by exploitation was investigated by applying 1000 consecutive double exponential over-voltage pulses to the varistors. Resistance of metal-oxide varistors to the radiation is of special interest in nuclear, military, and space technology. Radiation effects of californium-252 combined neutron/gamma radiation were examined. Voltage-current characteristics, voltage-resistance characteristics and the value of breakdown voltage were used to characterize metal-oxide varistors operation. Non-linearity coefficient, defined from the voltage-current curve, was also used as a parameter. Results are presented with the accompanying theoretical interpretations of the observed changes in metal-oxide varistors behaviour.

AB - This paper investigates, through theory and experiment, the applicability of the results obtained in laboratory tests of relatively short duration performed on model structures, as a part of the process of designing high-voltage equipment intended for lasting exploitation. Possibilities and limititions of applying these results to practical structures are examined using the methods of mathematical statistics. Special attention is devoted to the influence of electrode surface enlargement and pulse load (overvoltage) prolongation on the statistical behaviour of the pulse breakdown voltage random variable, expressed in the form of the enlargement law. In the theoretical part of the paper, the general four-dimensional (space-time) enlargement law is derived, along with its simplified three-dimensional (surface-time) variant. In the part of the paper related to the experiment, performed with the aim of testing the applicability of the derived surface-time enlargement law to SF6 gas-insulated two-electrode systems, a description of the experimental equipment and procedure is provided, along with the details of measurement data processing. Comparison of experimental results with those predicted by the surface-time enlargement law proved its validity for a two-electrode configuration with a homogenous and radial electric field, insulated by SF6 gas under pressure (with gas pressure as a parameter).

AB - Possibilities for the application of solar systems based on photovoltaic conversion of solar energy are very wide, primarily because of their relatively low cost and very important fact that solar energy is most acceptable source of electrical energy from the environmental point of view. However, as every other energy source, PV technology also has some limitations and disadvantages. In the first place, compared to some other sources, the efficiency of PV modules (i.e. solar cells) is relatively small. One of the most limiting factors for all kinds of detectors is their noise, especially frequency dependent generation-recombination noise, burst noise and 1/f noise. It has been suggested that the cause of the 1/f noise is the trapping of electrons at the surface states as well as in the bulk. That is why the improvement of electrical characteristics of contact layers is very important. Silicides are widely investigated as promising reliable and reproducible contacts. The aim of this paper is to present the possibilities of lowering noise in silicides (that could be used as contacts) and in solar cells as a whole.

AB - Two types of three-electrode gas-insulated spark gaps have been investigated in this paper: one with the third electrode located inside the main electrode, and the other with a separate third electrode. Three types of insulating media have been used: vacuum, SF6 and N2. Additionally, three different electrode materials have been implemented: copper, steel and tungsten. The following characteristics have been tested experimentally: the influence of insulating gas parameters on spark gap operation, the influence of the polarity of working and trigger voltages on spark gap operation, and the influence of the rate of rise of the trigger voltage on spark gap operation and the degree of spark gap irreversibility. A theoretical model of the spark gap is presented in the paper, which provides a basis for explaining experimental results depending on specific characteristics of the spark gap.

AB - In this paper we expound on the procedure of determining the pulse tolerable voltage characteristic in the voltage-versus-time frame, by applying the time enlargement law to the breakdown time random variable, and using a single statistical sample for this variable, obtained through experiments with a predefined shape of the voltage load. The suggested algorithm has been experimentally tested for Ar, N(2), and SF(6) gases, in the pat product (pressure x interelectrode gap) range from 10(-4) to 300 bar mm. The testing was performed by comparing the pulse tolerable voltage characteristic of a two-electrode configuration obtained by applying a particular shape of the pulse voltage load with the values corresponding to other pulse voltage shapes, covering a wide range of frequencies. Satisfactory results have been obtained concerning the applicability of the procedure, with certain minor limitations, which are pointed out. [DOI: 10.1143/JJAP.47.8928]

AB - CdZnTe detectors have been employed in diagnostic X-ray spectroscopy. This paper presents the Monte Carlo calculation of X-ray deposited energy in a CdZnTe detector for different energies of photon beam. In incident photon direction, the distribution of absorbed dose as deposited energy in detector is determined, Based on the dependence of the detector response on the thickness and different Zn fractions, some conclusions about changes of the material characteristics could be drawn. Results of numerical simulation suggest that the CdZnTe detector could be suitable for X-ray low energy.

AB - The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of γ and X radiation to response time of some commercial gas filled surge arresters. We found that both radiations have significant influence on gas filled surge arresters pulse characteristic. The obtained results show that the optimal solution in gamma radiation field was CITEL components, while in X radiation field was better to use SIEMENS components.

AB - The aim of this paper is to find the possibility for improvement of gas-filled surge arresters (GFSA) characteristics in y and X radiation field by appropriate choice of electrode materials. For that purpose electrodes made of different materials were incorporated in the originally developed GFSA model. The obtained results show that both in y and X radiation fields, copper electrodes are an optimal solution, since they have the highest resistance to radiation effects. It is also shown GFSA are highly resistant to y radiation, but that X radiation leads to significant degradation of their characteristics.

AB - This paper aims to find the possibility of stabilizing the gas-filled surge arresters (GFSA) static working point in gamma- and X-radiation fields by an appropriate choice of constructive parameters. The observed effects on Some commercial components have been compared to the originally developed GFSA model with the aim of improving the characteristics of the commercial components. The type of noble gas, the pressure in the gas chamber, the inter-electrode gap value, the electrode material, and the manner of electrode surface processing are used as variable parameters. The obtained results are significant for a better understanding of the prebreakdown effects in gases at low pressures, but also have practical importance for the manufacturer of GFSAs.

AB - This paper presents an innovative method for efficient characterization of relevant characteristics of non-linear over-voltage protection elements in low-voltage applications. Standard measuring equipment is modified to enable an efficient and repeatable experimental procedure to investigate characteristics of over-voltage diodes and varistors: volt-ampere characteristic, volt-ohm characteristic, coefficient of non-linearity, and finally, the breakdown voltage. Additionally, an innovative aging estimate algorithm was used. Furthermore, the pseudo-empiric method using the area law is used to determine an impulse characteristic of a gas filled surge arrester (GFSA). Suggested experimental procedure offers higher measuring accuracy and repeatability because internal temperature of non-linear elements is virtually unchanged during all experiments. All experimental results are treated statistically to prove high repeatability of suggested approach. Comparison of results obtained by suggested experimental method and classical approach, shows minimal discrepancies.
