AB - Alkyd resin/TiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were prepared from short oil alkyd resin and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with in situ formed imine ligand, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine, or with three gallic acid esters. The short oil alkyd resin was synthesized from sunflower oil, phthalic anhydride, and trimethylolpropane. Unmodified and surface modified TiO2 NPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Rheological investigation revealed that prepared dispersions have higher dynamic viscosity than pure alkyd resin. Using different characterization methods it was obtained that NCs have similar thermooxidative stability as alkyd resin, lower glass transition temperature, better barrier properties, enhanced hardness, better chemical resistance, and lower adhesion to the metal, except in the case of NC prepared using TiO2 NPs surface modified with imine, which exhibited better adhesion to the metal than pure alkyd resin.

AB - The sustainable tomorrow for future generations lies with the present industrial development toward the proper utilization of various bio-based products. For a transition to a higher level of sustainability, it is necessary to form a new platform for advanced technology products. This paper reports the development of new fully bio-based unsaturated polyesters resins (UPRs). A series of prepolymers were synthesized by varying saturated diacids (oxalic, succinic and adipic acid), itaconic acid and 1,2-propandiol. Dimethyl itaconate was used as a reactive diluent (RD) in amounts of 30, 35 and 40 wt%. Rheological measurements showed that the obtained resins possessed viscosities (234-2226 mPa s) amenable to a variety of liquid molding techniques. The impact of composition variables-prepolymer structure and amount of RD-on the chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of the thermosets was examined by DMA, TA and tensile measurements and was discussed in detail. The tensile properties (37-52 MPa), glass transition temperature (60-97 A degrees C) and coefficient of thermal expansion (71-168 10(-6) A degrees C-1) of the cured resins were in the desired range for UPRs. This investigation showed that UPRs based on itaconic acid can be tailored during synthesis of the prepolymer to meet the needs of different property profiles.

AB - For the preparation of fully biobased unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), the replacement of styrene with alternate nonpetroleum-based monomers turned out to be one of the most challenging tasks. Its complexity lies in the fact that reactive diluents (RD) have to have low viscosity and volatility, good compatibility with prepolymer, and capability to homopolymerize and copolymerize with its unsaturations. In this context, we directed our efforts to develop fully biobased UPRs using the dialkyl itaconates as an alternative to styrene. Therefore, a series of 100% biobased UPRs were prepared from itaconic acid and 1,2-propandiol and diluted by dialkyl itaconates. The resins were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR, volatility, and viscosity measurements, while the cured samples were characterized by dynamic mechanical properties, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis data, and tensile tests. The influence of RD structure on the properties of cured samples was discussed in detail. It was shown that the prepared resins had evaporation rates of dialkyl itaconates of several orders of magnitude less compared to styrene. The cured resins with dimethyl itaconate showed comparable or even better thermal and mechanical properties compared to the one with styrene. This investigation showed that itaconic acid and dialkyl itaconates are promising bioresources for the preparation of fully biobased UPRs for mass consumption.

AB - Mimicking the extraordinary performances of natural materials presents an attractive, but challenging approach in the synthesis of advanced functional materials. In the field of separation techniques, the design of a low-cost, regenerative, environmentally friendly sorbent and the utilization of most of its active centers to remove the targeted pollutant are everyday challenges. The combination of casein and poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMANa) in the form of a soft polymer network is proposed as a promising sorbent for the removal of Ni2+ from wastewater. Such a combination and an applied synthetic route form hybrid materials with better sorption properties than both their components alone. SEM and TEM show that caseinate micelles are dissociated and the more exposed protein structure is stabilized by the PMANa network and able to form various stable complexes. The achieved sorption capacity (224 mg g(-1)) is among the highest reported in the literature. The very high removal efficiency in the wide range of the initial Ni2+ concentrations (0.05-200 ppm) and easy and complete regeneration without decrease in sorption capacities make these low-cost materials highly sensitive sorbents attractive for use under real conditions where it is necessary to avoid environmental risks and provide the recovery and reuse of the metal.

AB - Epoxy resin/titanium dioxide (epoxy/TiO2) nanocomposites were obtained by incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with gallic acid esters in epoxy resin. TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide and their structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Three gallic acid esters, having different hydrophobic part, were used for surface modification of the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles: propyl, hexyl and lauryl gallate. The gallate chemisorption onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, while the amount of surface-bonded gallates was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as the length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, on glass transition temperature, barrier, dielectric and anticorrosive properties of epoxy resin was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, water vapor transmission test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements. Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused increase of glass transition temperature and decrease of the water vapor permeability of epoxy resin. The water vapor transmission rate of epoxy/TiO2 nanocomposites was reduced with increasing hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand. Dielectric constant of examined nanocomposites was influenced by gallate used for the modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites have better anticorrosive properties than pure epoxy resin, because the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles react as oxygen scavengers, which inhibit steel corrosion by cathodic mechanism. AB - Chitosan is a biodegradable, non-toxic, biocompatible polymer convenient for use in drug delivery. In this study, hybrid polymeric networks (HPNs) based on chitosan, itaconic acid and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared and characterized. Chitosan was dissolved in itaconic acid in order to obtain ionic crosslinking with the dicarboxylic acid. In the second step, this chitosan/itaconic acid network was mixed with PVA and chemically crosslinked with glutaraldehyde. The chitosan/itaconic acid ratio was kept constant, while the concentrations of PVA and glutaraldehyde were varied. All samples were characterized using swelling studies, dynamic mechanical analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The equilibrium degrees of swelling obtained for the HPNs were higher than most of the values reported for chitosan hydrogels obtained by dissolving chitosan in acetic acid or HCI aqueous solutions. This method of synthesis also resulted in hydrogels with better mechanical properties and thermal stability. By changing the PVA content and the degree of crosslinking, it is possible to finely tune the properties of the HPNs, which could make them suitable as potential matrices in controlled drug delivery. AB - Itaconic acid, IA (C5H6O4), was investigated as a potential flocculant for the aqueous processing of alumina powders. The adsorption of IA, as a function of its concentration and pH value of the solution, onto the alumina surface was studied by the solution depletion method. The stability of the suspensions in the presence of itaconic acid was evaluated in light of the surface charge of the alumina powder used, the degree of dissociation of IA, as well as the sedimentation behavior and rheology of the suspensions. It was found that the adsorption process is extremely pH dependent; the maximum adsorption of IA onto alumina surface occurring at a pH close to the value of the first IA dissociation constant, pK(a1). Also, IA does not influence the value of the point of zero charge of alumina. It was shown that IA represents an efficient flocculant for concentrated acidic alumina suspensions.

AB - In this study non-isothermal non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis was applied as a method for determining the thermal stability of the total lipids extracted from raw and maturing intramuscular tissue of fallow deer (Cervus Dama Dama L.). The total lipids were extracted from intramuscular tissue, according to the Folch method and stored for nine months at +4 and -18 degrees C. The changes in the thermal stability of the total lipids during non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis were correlated with the lipid composition, i.e. fatty acid composition. The Flynn-Wall method was used to determine the values of the activation energy of thermal degradation of the total lipids in a defined mass loss range.

AB - Thermogravimetry, TG, of lipids is an appropriate analytical method, commonly used to correlate the kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation of lipids and their composition. Thus, samples of total lipids extracted from the raw fatty tissue of fallow deer were subjected to non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis. The samples were previously stored for nine months at +4 degrees C and -18 degrees C. The material stability was investigated in order to establish the most favorable conditions for the production and storage of different foods. The total lipids were extracted according to the Folch method. The identification and quantitative analysis of the methyl esters of the fatty acids of the total lipids were performed by capillary gas chromatography. Based on the non-oxidative and oxidative TG results, the activation energies of the thermal degradation and oxidation of the total lipids extracted from different samples of fatty tissue were determined. The Doyle-Gorbachev method was used for the calculations.

AB - The characterization of textured yarn is of great significance for both producers and final users. The influence of the texturing parameters (draw ratio and heater temperature) on the characteristics of the textured polyamide yarn has been investigated in this study. Textured yarn was charc- acterized by the degree of orientation, degree of crystallinity, breaking characteristics, shrinkage, elasticity characteristics, the contents of the end groups and degree of whiteness. It was observed that the mentioned characteristics changed as a function of time. The influence of yarn ageing on its characteristics was assessed. The parameters of polyamide textured yarn structure were determined by DSC.

AB - U radu je ispitana oksidativna termijska degradacija poli(2-hloretil metakrilata) (PCEMA) u prisustvu komercijalnih antioksidanata amino tipa CHIMASSORB 119 (CH 119) i CHIMASSORB 944 (CH 944) i smeše antioksidanata, IRGANOX 1010, fenolnog derivata, i IRGAPHOS 168, fosfita (maseni udeli 1:1). Ispitivanja su izvedena termogravimetrijskom (TG) metodom, a na osnovu karakterističnih temperatura 10% gubitka mase, oblika diferencijalnih TG (DTG) krivih i srednjih vrednosti energije aktivacije termijske degradacije, ispitivan je uticaj pojedinih antioksidanata.
AB - The oxidative thermal degradation of poly(2-chloroethyl methacrylate) (PCEMA) was studied in the presence of the following commercial antioxidants: CHIMASSORB 119 (CH 119) and CHIMASSORB 944 (CH 944), both based on amines, and a mixture of IRGANOX 1010, a phenol derivative, and IRGAPHOS 168, a phosphite (mass ratio 1:1), by the thermogravimetric (TG) method. On the basis of the obtained results, the characteristic temperatures of 10% mass loss, Tio%, the shape of the differential TG (DTG) curves and mean values of the thermal degradation activation energy, Ea, it was concluded that the commercial photostabilisers CH 119 and CH 944 could not successfully stabilize the thermal degradation of PCEMA, while in the case of the presence of the antioxidant mixture IRGANOX 1010 and IRGAPHOS 168 (1:1) slight stabilizing effects were observed.
