AB  - The structural and morphological properties of mesoporous anatase nanopowders, synthesized by sol-gel method, have been modified by varying the duration of calcination, in order to obtain more efficient photocatalyst than Degussa P25 in the degradation of relatively large pollutant molecules ( GT 1 nm in size). According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystallite size was increased from 13 to 17.5 nm with the increase of calcination time from 1 to 7 h. The analysis of nitrogen sorption experimental data revealed that all samples were mesoporous, with a mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 5-9 nm. The corrugated pore structure model was employed to evaluate pore structure tortuosity. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, selective beta(1)-blocker used in a variety of cardiovascular diseases, with molecular size of 0.610 nm x 1.347 nm. The study has demonstrated that samples calcined for 4 and 5 h have displayed higher photocatalytic performance than Degussa P25, whereas the sample calcined for 3 h has shown comparable activity. AB  - Ce1-xPrxO2-delta (0 LT = x LT = 0.4) nanocrystals were synthesized by self-propagating method and thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Undoped CeO2 nanocrystals exhibited intrinsic ferromagnetism at room temperature. Despite the increased concentration of oxygen vacancies in doped samples, our results showed that ferromagnetic ordering rapidly degrades with Pr doping. The suppression of ferromagnetism can be explained in terms of the different dopant valence state, the different nature of the vacancies formed in Pr-doped samples and their ability/disability to establish the ferromagnetic ordering.

AB  - Nanocrystalline ceria (CeO2) is known for its ionic conductivity and oxygen storage properties, which depend on the presence of oxygen ion vacancies. The vacancies cause several important changes in CeO2 involving microstrain, electronic structure, magnetic properties, etc. In this article, we focus our attention to the microstructural changes of nanocrystalline CeO2-x annealed at different temperatures in the range 200500 degrees C. Structural and vibrational properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed that the content of oxygen vacancies changed significantly with increasing annealing temperature, which plays an important role in the observed microstructural changes of the annealed samples. We demonstrate that the observed microstrain changes, because of variable defect content, dominate over the crystallite size effect. This finding is opposite to the conclusions made by several other authors. A new mode, classified as a probable surface mode, was observed in the Raman spectra at similar to 480 cm(1), the appearance of which can be explained by the large defective structure and disorder in the ceria lattice. AB  - Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) or tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(OC4H9)(4) as precursors, different alcohols and calcination temperatures in the range from 400 to 650 A degrees C. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared powders has been tested for the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, a selective beta-blocker used to treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and compared to photocatalytic activity obtained from Degussa P25. Nanosized TiO2 powders prepared from TiCl4 and amyl-alcohol, calcined at 550 A degrees C, displayed an activity comparable to Degussa P25, whereas the sample from the same series, calcined at 650 A degrees C, showed higher photocatalytic activity in the whole range of the catalyst loading. Structural, morphological and surface properties of synthesized TiO2 nanopowders have been investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, in order to find out the material properties which enable rapid an efficient decomposition of metoprolol under UV radiation.

AB  - Ultrafine porous cerium dioxide nanopowders were synthesized by relatively new and cost-effective hydrothermal method varying the main synthesis parameters, temperature of calcination and type of basic solution. Characterization of the as-produced powders was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman scattering and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. This study reveals that difference in synthesis parameters has strong influence on the particle size, surface area, and pore size distribution enabling the more precise control of material properties very important for catalytic and nanosensor applications. abstract = "Ultrafine porous cerium dioxide nanopowders were synthesized by relatively new and cost-effective hydrothermal method varying the main synthesis parameters, temperature of calcination and type of basic solution. Characterization of the as-produced powders was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman scattering and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. This study reveals that difference in synthesis parameters has strong influence on the particle size, surface area, and pore size distribution enabling the more precise control of material properties very important for catalytic and nanosensor applications. AB  - In this paper nanometric powders of solid solution of the host compound ceria (CeO(2)) with Pr dopant in the lattice were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) synthesis with composition (Ce(0.9)Pr(0.1)O(2-delta)). Powder properties such as specific surface area crystallite and particle size and lattice parameters have been studied. BET, TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples at room temperature. Obtained solid solution exhibits a fluorite-type crystal structure. The average crystallite size is about 3-4 nm. Williamson-Hall plots were used to separate the effect of the size and strain in the nanocrystals. It is noticed the redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F(2g) mode which is explained with nanocrystalline nature of powders. Color characters of solid solution depending on calcinations temperature and their position in the chromaticity diagram were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry (diffuse reflectance). AB  - We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and Fe2+(Fe3+) doped CeO2 nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of CeO2 fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 cm(-1), seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the CeO2 intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 cm(-1), 1320 cm(-1) and 1600 cm(-1), which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) cation deficient structure, to 2 omega(LO) IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

All the samples were calcinated at 140 degrees C and 200 degrees C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.

AB  - The effects of spin-phonon interaction and magnetic anisotropy on the temperature dependence of the infrared optical phonon modes in the antiferromagnetic alpha-MnSe are investigated by use of Greens function formalism within 1/z perturbation framework. The renormalization effects are calculated explicitly as a function of temperature, phonon-phonon, and spin-phonon interaction constants. Temperature dependence of the renormalized LO phonon frequencies of the F(1u) infrared active and combinational phonon modes are calculated and compared with experimental data. We have shown that the inclusion of anisotropy is necessary in order to get a good quantitative agreement with the experiment.

AB  - Raman spectra of Nd doped ceria nanocrystals were measured by gradual heating and cooling over the temperature range of 293-1073 K and analyzed using the phonon confinement model that incorporates inhomogeneous strain and anharmonic effects. We have demonstrated that in nanograins, four-phonon anharmonic processes are more dominant at higher temperatures than size effects. After the heat treatment, Nd doped ceria nanocrystals remain of nanometric range (similar to 20 nm) while the concentration of oxygen vacancies is still high in ceria lattice, making this material convenient for solid oxide fuel cells application. AB  - Nanopowdered solid solution Ce1-xY(Nd)(x)O2-delta samples ( 0.1 LT = x LT = 0.25) were made by self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) synthesis. The first-order Raman spectra of Ce1-xY(Nd)(x)O2-delta samples measured at room temperature exhibit three broad features: the main Raman active F-2g mode at about 450 cm(-1) and two broad features at about 550 (545) and 600 cm-1. The mode at similar to 600 cm(-1) was assigned to the intrinsic oxygen vacancies due to the nonstoichiometry of ceria nanopowders. The mode at about 550 (545) cm(-1) was attributed to the oxygen vacancies introduced into the ceria lattice whenever Ce4+ ions are replaced with trivalent cations (Y3+, Nd3+). The intensity of this mode increases with doping in both series of samples, indicating a change of O2- vacancy concentration. The mode frequency shifts in opposite direction in Y- and Nd-doped samples with doping level, suggesting that different types of defect space can occur in Y- and Nd-doped ceria nanopowders.

AB  - One of the methods for powder synthesis that is both cost and time effective is the self-propagating room temperature synthesis. We applied this method to synthesize rare earth doped ceria nanopowders. Since they exhibit very high ionic conductivity at intermediate temperatures these compositions are attractive for a new generation of nanostructured ceramics applicable in solid oxide fuel cells as electrolytes. In this paper we paid our attention to the reaction based on methathetical pathway, whereby solid solution nanopowders of rare earth elements with ceria were obtained at room temperature. Compositions of Ce1-xRexO2-delta (Re = Y, Nd) were synthesized with x ranging from 0 to 0.20. The reaction course is discussed and the properties of the obtained powders are presented.

Infrared study of laser synthesized anatase TiO2 nanopowders

AB  - Nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) is synthesized by laser-induced pyrolysis using titanium isopropoxide as a liquid precursor. The specific surface area of as-produced nanopowders measured by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) varies from 84 to 110 m(2)g(-1). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering, showed that the TiO2 nanocrystals had an anatase structure. The rain size of the nanoparticles was estimated from scanning electron microscopy, XRD and BET measurements. The reflection spectra of nanocrystalline TiO2 pressed pellets has been measured in the region between 80 and 1500 cm(-1) by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To interpret the experimental results, a model based on a generalized Bruggeman effective medium approximation of a dielectric function has been proposed. It is based on the polycrystalline character of TIO2 nanoparticles including island-structure and porosity of the nanopowders, along with the anatase single crystal dielectric functions. Thus, by comparing the results of calculated and experimental infrared (IR) spectra, the values of microscopic parameters of nanocrystalline powders can be deduced.

Charge stacking in the half-doped manganites

AB  - The stability of the charge-stacked structure vis-a-vis the charge-alternate structure in the half-doped manganites is studied with a model that includes electronic kinetic energy, onsite and intersite Coulomb interactions, the Jahn-Teller energy, and the antiferromagnetic superexchange between the manganese core spins. It is shown that for a single zigzag chain, the electronic kinetic energy stabilizes the standard chain, with Mn3+ at the bridge site and Mn4+ at the corner site, over the reversed zigzag chain with the two Mn valences interchanged. The electronic kinetic energy and magnetic interactions stabilize the three-dimensional charge-stacked structure, while a large intersite Coulomb interaction Vgreater than or equal toV(c) would stabilize the charge-alternate structure. It is argued that the magnitude of V is small enough that the charge-stacked structure is stabilized in the half-doped manganites such as La1/2Ca1/2MnO3. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

AB  - The microscopic origin of the charge and orbital order in the half-doped manganites is examined from ab initio density-functional calculations and exact diagonalization studies. It is shown that the dominant mechanism responsible for the charge order is the Jahn-Teller coupling, with a lesser but significant contribution from the on-site Coulomb interaction. The band structure shows a sizable interchain coupling between the zigzag chains, leading to a considerable band dispersion normal to the chains, in sharp contrast with the zigzag chain physics.

AB  - Nanometric Si-C-N powders were obtained by CO2-laser- induced synthesis, starting from two different gas mixtures: SiH4-NH3-C2H4 or SiH4-NH3-C2H2. The variation in the initial gas mixture composition influences the local bonding and crystallinity of the powders. Infrared reflection spectroscopy and X- ray diffraction analysis have been used to investigate the final powder composition. The results show that it is possible to produce the ternary Si-C-N phase with a variable relative arrangement of silicon, nitrogen and carbon atoms on the sites of the amorphous network.
