AB - Perovskite ceramic material based on MgTiO3 is used in various types of electronic devices owing to its dielectric properties, high dielectric constant, and low losses. These features can be tailored by setting preparation conditions. Densification of magnesium titanate by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was the aim of this work. First, the mechanical activation in the highenergy ball mill was applied on the powder of MgO-TiO2 mixed in mole ratio 1:1. Prepared powder mixtures, activated for different times, were SPS sintered, at 1200 o C with a heating rate of 100o C/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied, and dwelled at this condition for 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5o C/min. The starting powders, activated mixtures, and sintered ceramics bodies were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was noticed for the nonmilled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, MgTi2O5 was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount, below the threshold of the XRD method. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB - The titanium implant was treated with plasma electrolytic oxidation and subsequent ionic exchange and thermal treatment in order to obtain bioactive layer consisting of titanium oxide, calcium and sodium titanates and hydroxyapatite, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the given method, besides corresponding phase composition, enables suitable nanotopology for cell attachment and proliferation. Cytotoxicity investigations by MTT, LDH and propidium iodide assays and light microscopy showed that these coatings were not toxic to L929 cells.

AB - Nanocrystalline iron manganite powder was synthesized using the sol–gel combustion process, with glycine as fuel. It was further calcined at 900 °C for 8 h, resulting in the formation of a loose cubic FeMnO3 powder with a small specific surface area, net-like structure and plate-like particles as confirmed by XRD, N2 physisorption, FESEM and TEM analyses. The metal ion release was studied by ICP-OES and showed that less than 10 ppb of Fe or Mn ions were released by leaching in water, but 0.36 ppm Fe and 3.69 ppm Mn was found in LB (Luria–Bertani) bacterial medium. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored in distilled water and bacterial medium and showed that FeMnO3 particles do not generate O2˙− ions with or without UV irradiation, but synthesize H2O2 and show an antioxidative effect. Besides the higher stability of FeMnO3 particles in aqueous solution they showed an inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis growth in LB medium even at low concentrations (0.01 mg ml−1), but not in BHI medium even at 1 mg ml−1. This study points out that the mechanism of antibacterial action of engineered metal oxides needs continued investigation and specific experimental controls.

AB - Plasmon-longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon interaction in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals was investigated by measuring far-infrared reflectivity spectra in the 100-700 cm(-1) spectral range at room temperature. Analysis of the obtained results revealed that the presence of free charge carriers becomes significant with the particle size decrease to nanometer range and increase of lattice defects. The free charge carriers were found to be responsible for a plasmon mode which coupled strongly with two LO phonon modes of ceria. The presence of more pronounced low-frequency Drude tail and the screening of the phonon modes in Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals implied that the Plasmon-LO phonon interaction increased with doping. Factorized and additive dielectric function models were applied to deduce about the coupled and decoupled LO phonon frequencies and the structure of the decoupled plasmon mode in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals. These models were combined with Bruggeman effective medium approximation in order to properly describe the influence of porosity on the infrared reflectivity spectra. With increasing dopant content, the decoupled plasmon mode exhibited redshift and damping decrease implying that doping induced semiconductor-to-metalic state transition took place.
