AB - Macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate). p(GME), was synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with ethylenediamine. The sorption rate and capacity of the modified copolymer, p(GME)-en Rh(III), Au(III) and Pt(IV) ions were determined in batch experiments under non-competitive conditions. The uptake of Rh(III) was faster than those of Au(III) and Pt(IV). The sorption capacity for Pt(IV) was determined in the pH range 0.9-6.0. The maximum Pt(IV) uptake capacity onto p(GME)-en at pH 5.5 was 1.30 mmol/g.

AB - Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), with different porosity parameters were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with ethylene diamine (EDA). The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The sorption rate of the modified copolymer, poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en for Cu(II) ions determined under non-competitive conditions was relatively rapid, i.e. the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. Batch sorption capacities for Cu(II), Fe(II), Mn(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cr(III) and Pt(IV) ions were determined under non-competitive conditions in the pH range 1.25-5.5 at room temperature. The maximum sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en under non-competitive conditions were 1.30 mmol/g for Pt(IV) at pH 5.5, 1.10 mmol/g for Cu(II) at pH 5.5, 1.06 mmol/g for Pb(II) at pH 1.25 and 0.67 mmol/g for Cd(II) ions at pH 5.5. The selectivity of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en towards Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Pt(IV) ions was investigated under competitive conditions. Poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en showed high selectivity for Pt(IV) over Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions at pH 2.1. At pH 5.5, the metal sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en decreased in the order: Cu(II) GT Co(II) GT Pt(IV) approximate to Ni(II) GT Pb(II). Regeneration of the Cu(II), Ni(H) and Pb(II) loaded poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en with 2 M HIS04 showed that the polymer can be reused in several sorption/desorption cycles. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. AB - A study is made of the corrections that are needed in the evaluation of the annual radiation dose, for use in TL/OSL-dating, via NaI(Tl) field gamma-ray spectrometry (monitoring of K, Th and U), calibrated via voluminous blocks that are simulating the Auger hole measuring conditions. Two cases are considered: the Heidelberg granite calibration block, which was found to be quasi-infinite, and the Oxford concrete calibration blocks, for which effective concentrations of elements are reported so as to account for their non-infiniteness. The calculations, via the software package ANGLE, are based on the concept of effective solid angles for Marinelli geometries.

AB - A method for the improvement of the printing properties of offset printing forms is presented. Specimens of technical aluminum were electrochemically roughened and treated in different alkaline solutions of chromium chloride in order to chemically deposit a chromium layer. The composition of the surface layer was investigated by EDAX Chromium was found on the specimens that had been treated in an alkaline solution of chromium chloride. while no chromium was found on chemically untreated specimens or on specimens that had been treated in an alkaline solution without chromium chloride. The spectral reflectance from treated and non-treated specimens was also measured. The chromium-treated specimens were brighter than the non-chromium-treated ones. The wettability of the chromium-treated samples was compared with the wettability of the non-chromium treated samples by measuring the contact angle with water and the wetted area. The chromium-treated samples showed increased wettability compared with the non-chromium-treated samples. A printing test was performed under real printing conditions. Control prints was analyzed densitometrically and statistically. The chromium-treated printing forms gave clearer prints than the non-chromium-treated printing forms under all printing conditions.

AB - Aluminum as the base of offset printing plates should make good contact with wetting agents and the light sensitive layer and should be resistant to wear and cracking. In order to achieve this, the aluminum is roughened and eventually anodized. A thin, electrochemically deposited chromium layer is used as the non-printing element in bimetallic offset printing forms. Chromium shows excellent wettability and wear resistance. The possibility of chemical deposition of chromium on aluminum from an alkaline solution is examined in this paper The presence of chromium was confirmed and measured by EDAX. A difference in the spectral reflection characteristic between chromium-treated and non-treated specimens was also detected. An influence of a chromium layer on an aluminum surface was examined by water drop spreading. Chromium-treated samples showed better wettability than non-treated samples, but they are less wettable than anodized samples.
