AB  - The study aims to explore the environmental factors which activate accumulation abilities of Plantago lanceolata in the research area under strong anthropopressure resulting from the long-term pollution originating from copper mining-metallurgical activities in Southeastern Europe. Sampling was performed at the most endangered sites regarding its proximity to the major and/or secondary pollution sources, as well at the control site. The content of toxic elements (Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) was determined in the roots, leaves, stalks and flowers of P. lanceolata. The anthropogenic origin of environmental contamination was denoted through the high concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn in the leaves of P. lanceolata, reaching toxic levels, combined with the enrichment of plant parts (Enrichment factor >2), especially with Cu (as well as with Al, Fe, Ni and Zn) in samples from the immediate proximity to the copper smelter or at the prevailing wind directions. Biomonitoring potential, assessed through the correlations between toxic element content, as well as the values of Enrichment factor, was indicated for roots (in the case of Cu), all the aboveground plant parts (Fe) and stalks (Zn). The results have shown that the contents of toxic elements in plant parts as well as phytoremediation of P. lanceolata were dependent on soil element content, soil physico-chemical properties and soil enzyme activities, which were regarded as the main environmental drivers affecting phytoremediation ability. The analysis of biological factors (bioconcentration, translocation and bioaccumulation factor) indicated exclusion strategy and possible usage of P. lanceolata in phytostabilization of Zn. The results indicated that the study area is 'environmental hotspot' with potential threat to human health due to the high levels of bioaccumulation of the investigated toxic elements in P. lanceolata parts.

Methionine Capped Nanoparticles as Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors

AB  - The silver and gold L-methionine capped nanoparticles (Ag and Au @LM NPs) were analyzed as prospective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors to test their potential in the treatment of cognitive impairment in depression and Alzheimer's disease. The stability of NPs, and their ability to inhibit AChE were studied by UV-Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. At the same time, TEM and SEM measurements, DLS, and zeta potential measurements were employed in the structural characterization of NPs. Nearly spherical, negatively charged Ag and Au @LM NPs, with 17 nm and 31 nm in diameter, respectively, showed moderate inhibitory potential toward AChE in the given frame of investigated concentrations. For both NPs IC50 is not reached. Furthermore, the adsorption of enzyme molecules on the surface of Ag and Au @LM NPs was demonstrated. Hence, our assumption is that inhibition of AChE is caused by blockage of the enzyme‘s active site due to the steric hindrance of NPs.

Arsenite–soil humic acid binding by isothermal titration calorimetry: Thermodynamics and MNIS model

AB  - Arsenite–humic acid-binding process was investigated using the Isothermal Titration Calorimetry(ITC). The ITC data were successfully (R2=0.996-0.936) interpreted by applying the MNIS model,enabling thermodynamic parameters to be determined. The MNIS model was adjusted to the arsenite–HA binding process assuming hydrogen bonding as the dominant type of interaction in the system.Negative enthalpy change values indicated the arsenite–HAs binding as an exothermic process.Negative ΔG values (-(27.85-26.83) kJ mol-1) pointed out to spontaneous binding reaction, leading tothe formation of the arsenite–HA complexes. High binding constants values ((7.57-5.02)105 M-1)clearly demonstrated pronounced binding affinity. As ΔS values (0.041-0.027) kJ mol-1 K-1) wereapparently positive, but close to zero, and ΔH>ΔS, the reaction could be considered enthalpy driven.Reaction heats and H values (-(18.96-15.64) kJ mol-1) confirmed hydrogen bonds as the mostascendant interaction type in the arsenite–HA complex. Thermodynamic and reaction parametersclearly indicated that arsenite–HA complexes are formed at common soil pH values, confirming thepossible influence of humic acids on increased As mobility, and its reduced bioavailability.

Self-aggregation of soil humic acids with respect to their structural characteristics

AB  - The main goal of this work was to estimate the influence of carboxyl and phenolic groups, as well as aromatic, aliphatic and polysaccharide components, on the soil humic acids (HA) self-aggregation process. Soil HAs (leptosol and regosol) were separated using base resin getting fractions with different functional group contents. Blocking of carboxyl groups was performed using the esterification procedure to estimate the participation of each functional group in the HA aggregation. The presence of HA structural components was evaluated by potentiometric titration and ATR-FTIR. The aggregation was monitored at pH 3 using dynamic light scattering. Results indicated that the higher group content, the HA aggregation is less pronounced. A significant positive correlation of aliphatic C and aggregate size revealed their dominant influence in the HA self-aggregation. A lower abundance of aliphatic C in HA fractions could be considered as not sufficient to start the process. An increase of aromatic C in esters likely pointed out to its participation in hydrophobic bonding and, consequently, more pronounced aggregation. The relation of HA self-aggregate size with carboxyl and phenolic group, as well as aliphatic C, at low pH, could be considered universal regardless of the structural characteristics of the original or modified HA forms.

AB  - Soy isoflavone genistein (Gen) exerts beneficial effects against prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. However, its use as a chemoprevention/therapeutic agent is largely limited due to its low bioavailability. In this study we synthesized two variants of a new delivery system, genistein–gold nanoparticles conjugates Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, by an environmentally friendly method, using a dual role of Gen to reduce Au3+ and stabilize the formed AuNPs, with no additional component. The formation of Gen@AuNPs was confirmed via UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, and Raman spectra measurements. The spherical shape and uniform size of Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2 (10 ± 2 and 23 ± 3 nm, respectively), were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The nano-conjugates also varied in hydrodynamic diameter (65.0 ± 1.7 and 153.0 ± 2.2 nm) but had similar negative zeta potential (−35.0 ± 2.5 and −37.0 ± 1.6 mV), as measured by dynamic light scattering. The Gen loading was estimated to be 46 and 48%, for Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, respectively. The antiproliferative activities of GenAuNPs were confirmed by MTT test in vitro on three malignant prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3, DU 145, and LNCaP), while selectivity toward malignant phenotype was confirmed using non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the inhibition on cell proliferation of more potent Gen@AuNPs1 nano-conjugate is comparable with the effects of free Gen. In conclusion, the obtained results, including physicochemical characterization of newly synthesized AuNPs loaded with Gen, cytotoxicity, and IC50 assessments, indicate their stability and bioactivity as an antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer agent, with low toxicity against human primary cells. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

abstract = "Soy isoflavone genistein (Gen) exerts beneficial effects against prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. However, its use as a chemoprevention/therapeutic agent is largely limited due to its low bioavailability. In this study we synthesized two variants of a new delivery system, genistein–gold nanoparticles conjugates Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, by an environmentally friendly method, using a dual role of Gen to reduce Au3+ and stabilize the formed AuNPs, with no additional component. The formation of Gen@AuNPs was confirmed via UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, and Raman spectra measurements. The spherical shape and uniform size of Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2 (10 ± 2 and 23 ± 3 nm, respectively), were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The nano-conjugates also varied in hydrodynamic diameter (65.0 ± 1.7 and 153.0 ± 2.2 nm) but had similar negative zeta potential (−35.0 ± 2.5 and −37.0 ± 1.6 mV), as measured by dynamic light scattering. The Gen loading was estimated to be 46 and 48%, for Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, respectively. The antiproliferative activities of GenAuNPs were confirmed by MTT test in vitro on three malignant prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3, DU 145, and LNCaP), while selectivity toward malignant phenotype was confirmed using non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the inhibition on cell proliferation of more potent Gen@AuNPs1 nano-conjugate is comparable with the effects of free Gen. In conclusion, the obtained results, including physicochemical characterization of newly synthesized AuNPs loaded with Gen, cytotoxicity, and IC50 assessments, indicate their stability and bioactivity as an antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer agent, with low toxicity against human primary cells. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.",

Colloidal dispersions were characterized by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The size and spherical shape of NPs were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. Their surface covering was confirmed by atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurements. Density functional theory calculations pointed that the preferential adsorption mode of L-Met on both Ag and Au surfaces was a vertical binding geometry via –NH2 group, while horizontal binding mode via [sbnd]S[sbnd] and –NH2 groups is also possible. The genotoxicity (evaluated by the micronucleus assay) of NPs, as well as their effects on some oxidative stress parameters (catalase activity, malondialdehyde level), were assessed in vitro using human peripheral blood cells as a model system. The influence of NPs on the morphology of lymphocyte cells studied using atomic force microscopy revealed that the membrane of cells remained unaffected after the treatment with NPs. When considering the effects of NPs on catalase activity and malondialdehyde level, neither particle type promoted oxidative stress. However, the treatment of lymphocytes with Ag@LM NPs induced a concentration-dependent enhancement of the micronuclei incidence and suppression of the cell proliferation while Au@LM NPs promoted cell proliferation, with no significant effects on micronuclei formation. The Ag@LM NPs were more prone to induce DNA damage than Au@LM NPs, which makes the latter type more suitable for further studies in nano-medicine. © 2019

Properties of humic acids from copper tailings 20 years after reclamation

AB  - Part of Cu post flotation tailings of Serbia ZiJin Bor Copper, Serbia, was reclaimed by restoration of top soil with arable soils, and revegetation in 1991. Humic acids isolated from these Technosols were investigated to find out if their properties underwent any changes since reclamation. Two groups of control samples were used. Elemental composition (CHNS analysis) falls within the range of average soil humic acids. Humic acids belong to the type B pointing out to its lower humification degree (UV?Vis). Relative abundances of functional groups are ranged as follows: polysaccharide C ??aromatic C > carboxyl C > OH group > aliphatic C. Aromaticity indexes are low, 1.88? 3.25 (ATR-FTIR). Basic units at pH 10 are in the 11.7?26.8 nm range. Pronounced reaggregation (1462-?5218 nm) at pH 3 points out to less expressed humic acid sol stability, as well as to increase in aromatic condensation degree (dynamic light scattering). No significant changes have occurred in technosol humic acids since the recultivation, confirming stability of their properties over time (PCA). Nevertheless, humic acids from very strongly acidic Technosols show higher humifycation degree possibly originating from arable soils used in reclamation, but more likely from low soil pH and low litter input, results of unsuccessful reclamation.

Decrease of intensity of the surface plasmon absorption band at 524 nm and the appearance of a new broad band at ∼640 nm, followed by their red shift were observed in the presence of the complexes. TEM images showed that the average size and shape of AuNPs did not change after the addition of gold complexes. DLS and zeta potential measurements pointed out to the metal complex adsorption on the surface of AuNPs followed by flocculation process. In addition, kinetic studies indicated strong bond formation between these complexes and AuNPs. Accordingly, AuNPs/complex conjugates have the potential to be applied for the tracking of these metal complexes in the cells using nanospectroscopy approach. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB  - Ultrasmall iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles, with diameter mostly less than 3 nm dispersed in an organic carrier fluid were synthesized by polyol route. The evolution of ZFC-FC magnetization curves with temperature, as well as the shift of the ac susceptibility peaks upon changing the frequency, reveal that the nanoparticles in the fluid are non-interacting and superparamagnetic with the blocking temperature T-B similar to 10 K. The Mossbauer spectra analysis proposed the core/shell structure of the nanoparticles consisting of stoichiometric gamma-Fe2O3 core and non-stoichiometric shell. The nanoparticle surface layer has a great influence on their properties which is principally manifested in significant reduction of the magnetization and in a large increase in magnetic anisotropy. Magnetic moments do not saturate in fields up to 5 T, even at the lowest measured temperature, T = 5 K. The average magnetic particle diameter is changed from 1.3 to 1.8 nm with increasing magnetic field from 0 to 5 T which is noticeably smaller than the particle sizes measured by TEM. The estimated effective magnetic anisotropy constant value, K-eff = 2 x 10(5) J/m(3), is two orders of magnitude higher than in the bulk maghemite. Measurements of the longitudinal and transverse NMR relaxivity parameters on water diluted nanoparticle dispersions at 1.5 T gave the values r(1) = 0.028 mmol(-1) s(-1), r(2) = 0.050 mmol(-1) s(-1) and their ratio r(2)/r(1) = 1.8. Continuous increase of the T-1-weighted MRI signal intensity with increasing Fe concentration in the nanoparticle dispersions was observed which makes this ferrofluid to behave as a positive T-1 contrast agent. abstract = "Ultrasmall iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles, with diameter mostly less than 3 nm dispersed in an organic carrier fluid were synthesized by polyol route. The evolution of ZFC-FC magnetization curves with temperature, as well as the shift of the ac susceptibility peaks upon changing the frequency, reveal that the nanoparticles in the fluid are non-interacting and superparamagnetic with the blocking temperature T-B similar to 10 K. The Mossbauer spectra analysis proposed the core/shell structure of the nanoparticles consisting of stoichiometric gamma-Fe2O3 core and non-stoichiometric shell. The nanoparticle surface layer has a great influence on their properties which is principally manifested in significant reduction of the magnetization and in a large increase in magnetic anisotropy. Magnetic moments do not saturate in fields up to 5 T, even at the lowest measured temperature, T = 5 K. The average magnetic particle diameter is changed from 1.3 to 1.8 nm with increasing magnetic field from 0 to 5 T which is noticeably smaller than the particle sizes measured by TEM. The estimated effective magnetic anisotropy constant value, K-eff = 2 x 10(5) J/m(3), is two orders of magnitude higher than in the bulk maghemite. Measurements of the longitudinal and transverse NMR relaxivity parameters on water diluted nanoparticle dispersions at 1.5 T gave the values r(1) = 0.028 mmol(-1) s(-1), r(2) = 0.050 mmol(-1) s(-1) and their ratio r(2)/r(1) = 1.8. Continuous increase of the T-1-weighted MRI signal intensity with increasing Fe concentration in the nanoparticle dispersions was observed which makes this ferrofluid to behave as a positive T-1 contrast agent. AB  - Radiolabeled magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with hydrophilic phosphate ligands, i.e., imidodiphosphate (IDP) and inositol hexaphosphate (IHP), were developed as multifunctional agents to localize both radioactivity and magnetic energy at a tumor site. The coating of MNPs with phosphates made them biocompatible, increased their colloidal stability and allowed binding of the radionuclide Y-90 to the available functional groups on the surface of the MNPs. IDP and IHP have not hitherto been used for the coating of MNPs and the results of this study of the functionalized MNPs showed that the phosphate groups influenced the modification of the surface of MNPs. Characterization of the MNPs was performed using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and laser Doppler electrophoresis. The specific power absorption values obtained for MNPs (46.95-80.76 W g(-1)) in different physiological media indicated their possible application in hyperthermia treatment. Both types of coated MNPs were Y-90-labeled in a reproducible high yield ( GT 98%). In vitro studies of Y-90-MNPs in saline and human serum showed their high stability after 72 h. The biodistribution pattern of the MNPs after intravenous administration to healthy Wistar rats was followed by the radiotracer method, revealing that Y-90-Fe3O4-IDP and Y-90-Fe3O4-IHP MNPs were predominantly found in the liver (85.21% ID and 86.22% ID), followed by the spleen (9.23% ID and 8.82% ID) and the lungs (1.53% ID and 1.53% ID). The results of this comprehensive study showed that radiolabeled biocompatible phosphate magnetic complexes hold great promise for therapeutic uses combining magnetic hyperthermia and radiotherapy.

AB  - The paper presents the results of the experimental and theoretical study of 3,3-disulfopropyl-5,5-dichlorothiacyanine sodium salt (TC) adsorption and J-aggregation on the surface of citrate-capped silver nano particles (AgNPs) with an average particle size 10 nm. Various nanospectroscopy techniques such as UV-vis, TEM, AFM, DLS, zeta potential, and fluorescence measurements were carried out in order to characterize the hybrid system. Besides this, a set of simple density functional theory calculations (DFT) was performed and this suggested that TC dye, from the thermodynamical point of view, most likely interacted with AgNPs via oxygen atom from SO3- groups. The methods, which considered AgNPs as the macromolecule with several binding sites and TC dye as the ligand, were applied for the analysis of saturation curves constructed from the fluorescence data to obtain the binding constant (K-a = 1.5 x 10(6) M-1) and the average number of TC dye molecules bonded per AgNP (similar to 330). Moreover, TC fluorescence was quenched in the presence of AgNPs on the concentration dependent manner, yielding the linear Stern-Volmer relation accounting for both static and dynamic quenching with the quenching constant K-sv = 2.5 x 10(8) M-1. Kinetic measurements of J-aggregation as the dependence of AgNPs/TC concentration ratio confirmed that the J-aggregation occurred via a two-step process, the first of them being the initial adsorption of dye on AgNPs surface, followed by dye molecules rearrangement and the consecutive growth of TC aggregate layers.

AB  - Humic acids (HAs), similar to other fractions of humic substances (HSs), have a large number of reactive functional groups enabling them to aggregate in solutions. Regardless of the origin of humic acid (aqueous or soil), this aggregation process is dependent on environmental conditions and strongly influences the mobility of soluble ionic and molecular pollutants. The aim of this work was to monitor the aggregation process of two humic acids isolated from different mineral soils (IHSS Elliot soil HA standard and Rendzic Leptosol HA) in the 2-11 pH range. Changes in aggregate size in HA sols were followed up using dynamic light scattering (DLS), while zeta potential (ZP) measurements in the same pH range were performed applying laser Doppler electrophoresis (LDE) technique. The effect of HA sol concentration and soil source on aggregation was examined as well. Besides, HA samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. By inspecting HA-particle-size dependence on pH, it can be concluded that both HAs in corresponding sols behave as molecular aggregates or supramolecular structures, formed from small individual moieties (sizes LT 10 nm) at higher pH values. The ZP vs. pH curve for both HAs revealed the ZP minimum in the 5-7 pH range, caused most likely by dissociation of acidic functional groups prevailing at lower pH values and deaggregation predominating over dissociation at higher pH values.

Two natural zeolite formulations (NZ and NZ Modified) were applied to wheat at rates of 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 g/kg, while two diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations (DE S-1 and DE S-2) were applied at rates of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 g/kg. A bioassay was conducted under laboratory conditions: temperature of 24 +/- 1 degrees C, relative humidity in the range 50-55%, in tests with natural zeolites, and 60-65%, in tests with DEs, and in all combinations for progeny production. Mortality was assessed after 7, 14, and 21 d of insect contact with treated wheat, and the total mortality after an additional 7-d recovery on untreated broken wheat. Progeny production was also assessed after 8wk for S. oryzae and 12 wk for T. castaneum. The highest mortality for S. oryzae and T. castaneum was found after the longest exposure period and 7 d of recovery, on wheat treated with NZ at the highest rate and DEs at rates of 0.50-1.0 g/kg. Progeny reduction higher than 90% was achieved after 14 and 21 d of contact of both beetle pests with wheat treated with DE S-1 at 0.50-1.0 g/kg and DE S-2 at 0.75-1.0 g/kg, while the same level of reduction was achieved only for T. castaneum after its contact with the highest rate of NZ formulation. NZ Modified, applied even at the highest rate, revealed much lower insecticidal potential.

The highest mortality for S. oryzae and T. castaneum was found after the longest exposure period and 7 d of recovery, on wheat treated with NZ at the highest rate and DEs at rates of 0.50-1.0 g/kg. Progeny reduction higher than 90% was achieved after 14 and 21 d of contact of both beetle pests with wheat treated with DE S-1 at 0.50-1.0 g/kg and DE S-2 at 0.75-1.0 g/kg, while the same level of reduction was achieved only for T. castaneum after its contact with the highest rate of NZ formulation. NZ Modified, applied even at the highest rate, revealed much lower insecticidal potential.",

AB  - This study was aimed to assess the levels of selected heavy metals and pesticides in soil and plant products from an agricultural area of Belgrade, Serbia and to indicate possible sources and risks of contamination. Soil, vegetable, and fruit samples from the most important agricultural city areas were collected from July to November of 2006. Metal contents were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, whereas pesticide residues were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after extraction performed using solid-phase microextraction technique. Soil characterization based on the determination of selected physical and chemical properties revealed heterogeneous soils belonging to different soil groups. The concentrations of lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc in soil samples do not exceed the limits established by national and international regulations. Residues of the herbicide atrazine were detected in three soil samples, with levels lower than the relevant limit. The presence of other herbicides, namely prometryn, chloridazon, acetochlor, flurochloridone, and napropamide, was registered in some soil samples as well. Among the insecticides investigated in the soil, fenitrothion and chlorpyrifos were the only ones detected. In most of the investigated vegetable samples from the Obrenovac area, Pb and Cd contents are higher in comparison with the maximum levels, indicating the emission of coal combustion products from local thermal power plants as a possible source of contamination. Residue levels of some herbicides and insecticides (metribuzin, trifluralin, pendimethalin, bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, and cypermethrin) determined in tomato, pepper, potato, and onion samples from Slanci, Ova, and Obrenovac areas are even several times higher than the maximum residue levels. Inappropriate use of these plant protection products is considered to be the most probable reason of contamination. Because increased levels of heavy metals and pesticide residues found in plant products could pose a risk to consumers health, their continual monitoring before product distribution to city markets is indispensable.

The highest adult mortality was observed after the longest exposure period of 21 days and 7 days of recovery, when all three zeolite dosage rates and the recommended DE dosage caused 97-100% mortality of S. oryzae and 94-100% of T. castaneum. On the other hand, 100% mortality was not achieved in any test variant involving R. dominica; the highest (about 92%) was detected for DE, while 52% and 79% mortality was achieved with the zeolites at the highest rate of 0.75 g/kg. Progeny reduction by GT 90% was achieved after 21 days of contact of all three beetle pests with DE-treated wheat, while the same level of reduction was achieved for S. oryzae and T. castaenum only after contact with the highest rate of the zeolite product, Minazel. Thus the two zeolite formulations are comparable to diatomaceous earth in controlling adult S. oryzae. R. dominica and T. castaneum, but only the Minazel formulation could effectively protect wheat from attack by S. oryzae or T. castaneum, and only with a higher rate of application than for the DE formulation. AB  - Depleted uranium (DU) is a by-product of uranium enrichment process and its use is very dangerous and harmful. We measured uranium concentration in the surface soil (0-5 cm depth) from bomb craters caused by cruise missiles in which DU might have been used as counterweights during NATO attack. Total uranium concentration and isotopic ratio were determined using y-spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma method. Obtained results were in the range 1.7 - 22 mg/kg dry soil that was comparable to the uranium values found in off-side locations of Serbian soils.

Total uranium concentration and isotopic ratio were determined using y-spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma method. Obtained results were in the range 1.7 - 22 mg/kg dry soil that was comparable to the uranium values found in off-side locations of Serbian soils.",

Long-lived gamma-radionuclidic impurities in spent Mo-99/Tc-99m generators

AB  - The long-lived gamma-radionuclidic impurities in the columns of spent Mo-99/Tc-99m generators one year after the calibration date have been determined by v-spectrometry. Three radionuclidic impurities fission products (Ru-103, Ru-106 and Sb-125) were detected. Also in the majority of samples, three radioisotopes of tungsten (W-181, W-185 and W-188) were also present. The contents of the impurities were found to vary,greatly. According to the activity, energy and half-life, the main contribution to the residual activity in the spent generators is due to the presence of Sb-125.
