AB - We use the Galerkin approach and the finite-element method to numerically solve the effective-mass Schrodinger equation. The accuracy of the solution is explored as it varies with the range of the numerical domain. The model potentials are those of interdiffused semiconductor quantum wells and axially symmetric quantum wires. Also, the model of a linear harmonic oscillator is considered for comparison reasons. It is demonstrated that the absolute error of the electron ground state energy level exhibits a minimum at a certain domain range, which is thus considered to be optimal. This range is found to depend on the number of mesh nodes N approximately as alpha(0) log(e)(alpha 1) (alpha N-2), where the values of the constants alpha(0), alpha(1), and alpha(2) are determined by fitting the numerical data. And the optimal range is found to be a weak function of the diffusion length. Moreover, it was demonstrated that a domain range adaptation to the optimal value leads to substantial improvement of accuracy of the solution of the Schrodinger equation.

AB - Research activities of Vinca Institite have been based on two heavy water research reactors: a 10 MW one, RA, and zero power, RB. Reactor RA was operational from 1962 to 1982. In 2010, spent fuel has been sent to the country of origin, and the reactor now is in decommissioning. During the operational phase of the reactor there were no recorded accidental releases into the environment, only operational ones. Results of the environmental impact assessment of the assumed emission of radionuclides from the ventilation of nuclear reactor RA in Vinca to the atmospheric boundary layer are presented in this paper. Evaluation was done by using the Gaussian straight-line diffusion model and taking into account characteristics of the reactor ventilation system, the assumed emission release of radioactivity (from the literature), site-specific meteorological data for six-year period and local topography around nuclear reactor, and corresponding dose factors for inventory of radionuclides. Based on the described approach, and assuming that the range of appropriate meteorological data for six year period for the application of described mathematical model is enough for this kind of analysis, it can be concluded that the nuclear reactor RA, in the course of its work from 1962 to 1982, had no influence on the surrounding environment through the air above regulatory limits.

AB - In this study, we point to loss of accuracy in representing a field of air pollution concentration due to reduction of number of monitoring points or changes in their location. Using a Gaussian-type diffusion model, a high resolution concentration field was generated from 17 points representing the actual distribution of possible pollution sources. The starting grid consisted of 90 601 points. Then we reduced number of points by two orders of magnitude, forming the grid of 961 points. After that, the second reduction to 36 points was performed, still forming a regular grid. Finally, we had 16 points whose positions are in a qualitative agreement with the actual distribution of sampling stations in the area.

AB - Our aim was to assess clinical utility of Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy for evaluation of lung lesions in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the thorax and whole body scintigraphy were performed in 34 patients using Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC. Visual assessment was complemented by semiquantitative evaluation based on tumor to non-tumor (TINT) ratio. Clinical, laboratory, and histological findings served as the standard for comparison. Enhanced tracer uptake was observed on both SPECT and whole body scintigraphy in 29 of 34 patients (88% sensitivity). TINT ratios were significantly higher on SPECT than whole body images (2.96 +/- 1.07 vs. 1.70 +/- 0.43, p LT 0.01) and did not correlate with NET proliferation index Ki-67 (r= - 0.36, p=0.27). Conclusion: Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy is useful for evaluation of NET tissue in the lungs. SPECT provides better visualization of lung lesions than whole body scintigraphy. The intensity of tracer uptake, however, does not relate to the proliferation rate of NETs. Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy may be helpful for selecting and monitoring treatment options, particularly when radiolabeled somatostatin analogue therapy becomes available.

AB - The time differential perturbed angular correlation technique was used to observe the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole interactions of (181)Ta probe in the Ni-5 at.% Hf alloy from 78 to 1131 K. The presence of the Larmor precession frequency of (181)Ta in the Ni(Hf) solid solution phase confirms the Ni dominant concentration for the onset of ferromagnetism in the Ni-Hf alloys. A very weak quadrupole interaction originates from imperfections in the HfNi(5) phase formed during melting procedure. The third observed quadrupole interaction corresponds to the Ta probe in the HfO(2) contamination due to internal oxidation of the sample.

AB - The hyperfine interactions of Ta-181 probe in the nickel-2 at.% hafnium alloy have been studied by the perturbed angular correlation method in the temperature range 78-1131K. The magnitude of the magnetic dipole interaction of Hf-181/Ta-181 substituting in ferromagnetic Ni(Hf) solid solution decreases with increasing temperature. As a result of the restricted solid solubility of Hf in Ni, a second phase (HfNi5) in the Ni-Hf sample was detected. Hf-181/Ta-181 which resides in HfNi5 senses weak electric quadrupole interaction. The observed anomalous temperature behavior was ascribed to distortions in the HfNi5 cubic phase. The third measured hyperfine interaction corresponds to the quadrupole interaction of Hf-181/Ta-181 positioned in HfO2 contamination originating from an annealing procedure above 900 K.
