AB - Calcium ruthenate (CaRuO3) is widely believed to be located close to a quantum critical point due to the strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior expressed in the temperature dependence of electronic transport, specific heat, optical conductivity, etc. However, the corresponding anomalous behavior, marking crossover temperature regimes in the magnetic response of CaRuO3, is still lacking. Here we report detailed AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements of CaRuO3 and CaR u0.97 Ti 0.03 O3. The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of CaRuO3 show a slight dependence on the frequency of AC magnetic field below ∼40K, and an additional subtle change of curvature around 12 K. We interpret these results as a critical slowing down of spin fluctuations towards T = 0 K. We confirm these observations by magnetic measurements of CaRu0.97 Ti 0.03 O3, which show a pronounced magnetic response corresponding to the above temperatures.

AB - Perovskite oxides with the composition LaFe1-xCrxO3 (x = 0.5 and 0.75) have been studied. The samples have been prepared using the mechanochemical treatment. A mixture of crystalline La(OH)3, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 powders in stoichiometric ratio was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill up to 40 h of milling. The mechanochemical formation of the LaFe1-xCrxO3 perovskite phase was followed by X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The Rietveld refinement of the XRD data shows that the compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic perovskite structure with a random distribution of the Fe and Cr cations at the B sublattice. All structural and microstructural parameters were analyzed. In addition, magnetic measurements for LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 show clear antiferromagnetic ordering bellow 250 K, which supports above conclusion of random distribution of Fe and Cr cations.

AB - Thermodynamic and transport properties of the CaRu1xTixO3 system with x?=?0, 0.03, 0.07, 0.10, and 0.15 in magnetic field up to 9?T have been studied. The unconventional temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity observed for CaRuO3 are typical for non-Fermi liquids and they support the assumption about the proximity of the system to the quantum critical point. The analysis of the experimental results suggests the electronic phase separation in CaRuO3 into ferromagnetic itinerant regions coexisting with strongly correlated ones. Substitution by titanium seems to push the system towards ferromagnetism, and drives it away from the quantum criticality.

AB - We propose a model for the charge transfer mechanism in Y0.8(Ca)0.2Ba2Cu3O6+x to count the hole doping of CuO2 planes and the x dependence of the critical transition temperature Tc. It is assumed that the total number of doped holes in the planes is the sum of the numbers of holes that are introduced through two separate channels: substitution of Y3+ by Ca2+ and from CuO chains that are longer than a minimal (critical) length lmin needed for charge transfer to take place. The Tc(x) dependence is obtained by combining the calculated x dependence of doping, p(x), and the universal Tc versus p relation. Although calculated Tc(x) dependences for lmin = 3 and 4 both correlate remarkably well with the experimental Tc(x), we argue that the value lmin = 3 gives a reasonable overall agreement.

AB - We peruse various anomalous physical responses of the cubic (ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and paramagnetic CaRuO3) ruthenates, such as fractional power-law conductivity, anomalous Raman line shapes, and Hall currents. We show how these exciting power-law observations are naturally described within a new, local (orbital) non-Fermi-liquid state arising from strong, multiorbital Coulomb interactions. Introducing a multiorbital, correlated model treated within the dynamical mean-field theory, we also find two distinct relaxation rates for relaxation of transport in complete agreement with experiment.

AB - Electrical resistance, transversal magnetoresistance and the Hall effect were studied on polycrystalline CaTixRu1-xO3 (x = 0, 0.07) samples using a conventional Quantum Design PPMS-9 equipment in the temperature range 2-300 K and magnetic field up to 9 T. Substantial differences were found between the two samples: (i) opposite to the metallic character of CaRuO3, the substituted sample has insulating-like electrical resistance; (ii) the magnetoresistance of the substituted sample changes the sign from negative to positive values with increasing temperature. The magnetoresistance of CaRuO3 is negative, the sign reversal is induced by magnetic field and only at temperatures below 15 K, such a behaviour is predicted for clustered systems; (iii) the Hall voltage in pure CaRuO3 also changes sign from negative to positive values above 35 K. This temperature coincides with the observed magnetic transition temperature, indicating that the magnetic state and the carrier character interrelate.

AB - The influence of Ti substitution on the specific heat of the CaTixRu1-xO3 system at low concentrations x = 0, 0.005, and 0.03 was studied in the temperature range of 2-300 K at magnetic fields tip to 9 T. Small peak was revealed in the C/T vs. T-2 dependence at around 3 K, which are field sensitive (the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma linearly decreases with the increase in magnetic field), and might be connected to some kind of magnetic ordering. The coefficient gamma is suppressed also by Ti substitution.

AB - The specific heat in the temperature region from 100 mK to 360 K and in magnetic fields of 0 and 9 T and the susceptibility from 2 to 360 K and in a magnetic field of I T are measured in the layered NaxCoO2 (x=0.65, 0.70, and 0.75) oxides. Analysis of the data revealed non-Fermi-liquid behavior. The character of the observed anomalies seems to be connected to the mesoscopic phase separation, underlining the impact of disorder on the low-lying excitations in cobaltates. AB - In order to shed more light on the character of magnetic correlations at low temperatures in CaRuO3, the delicate effect of substituting nonmagnetic Ti4+ for Ru4+ in low concentrations (0.5-15%) has been investigated by magnetization, AC-susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Despite the clear features in magnetic measurement data at 34K no specific heat anomaly has been observed, nevertheless, two temperature regions with different magnetic characters have been identified. . In pure CaRuO3 sisignificant low-temperature upturn of C/T is visible below 15 K. This feature is suppressed by Ti substitution. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The analysis of data, assuming the combined effect of interlayer superexchange and the phase separation into mesoscopic magnetic domains with localized spins embedded in a matrix with an itinerant electronic character, suggests that the dominant contribution to the specific heat in the region of short-range ordering is mediated by quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic clusters, perpendicular to the CoO2 layers.

AB - Physics of ruthenates presents very attractive research field, recently. However, the nature of the ground state of CaRuO3 is not fully explored. Motivation for this study was to explore the influence of small concentrations of nonmagnetic substitutions for Ru4+ (Ti4+, Zr4+, Hf4+) on magnetic properties of material. Magnetic measurements (DC and AC method) show spin glass like magnetic ordering at T < 35 K for Ti4+ doped material, independently of concentration. On the other hand Zr4+ and Hf4+ doped materials show enhanced paramagnetism below 100 K. These results are completely unexpected, since Zr and Hf ions have larger ionic radii than Ti, and consequently produce larger frustration of the crystal lattice. Possible scenario of magnetic ordering of Ti4+ doped material is discussed.

AB - Nuclear magnetic resonace (NMR), EPR and magnetization measurements in NaxCoO2 for 0.65less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.75 are presented. While the EPR signal arises from Co4+ magnetic moments ordering at T(c)similar or equal to26 K, Co-59 NMR signal originates from cobalt nuclei in metallic regions with no long range magnetic order and characterized by a generalized susceptibility typical of strongly correlated metallic systems. This phase separation in metallic and magnetic insulating regions is argued to occur below T-*(x) (220-270 K). Above T-* an anomalous decrease in the intensity of the EPR signal is observed and associated with the delocalization of the electrons which for T LT T-* were localized on Co4+ d(z)(2) orbitals. It is pointed out that the in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling JT(*) cannot be the driving force for the phase separation.

AB - Specific heat of the layered Na0.65CoO2 powder sample over the temperature region of 3-360 K has been studied. Features hinting at charge ordering below room-temperature were observed. Magnetic phase transition at 28 K as well as signs of short-range ordering confirm the 2D character of magnetism with weak inter-planar coupling in the system. Comparison to different 2D antiferromagnetic models suggests that the magnetic lattice is more square- than triangular-like, what could be favoured by the charge ordering.

AB - CaRuO3 is a perovskite with an orthorhombic distortion, and is believed to be close to magnetic ordering. Magnetic studies of single-crystal and polycrystalline CaRu1-xCuxO3 (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to15 at. %Cu) reveal that a spin-glass-like transition develops for xless than or equal to7 at. % Cu. The obtained value for the effective magnetic moment p(eff) =3.55 mu(B) for an x=5 at. % Cu single crystal, indicates the presence of Ru5+. At higher Cu concentrations more complex magnetic behaviors are observed. Electrical resistivity measured on polycrystalline samples shows a metal-to-insulator transition at 51 K for only 2-at. % Cu. Charge compensation, which is assumed to be present upon Cu2+/3+ substitution, induces the appearance of Ru5+ and/or the creation of oxygen vacancies in a crystal structure. Since the observed changes in physical properties are completely attributable to the charge compensation, they cannot be related to behaviors of a pure compound where no such mechanism is present. This study provides the criterion for good chemical probes for studying Ru-based perovskites.

AB - The present study summarizes magnetic and Mossbauer measurements on ceramic Li2MO3 M = Mn. Ru and Ir and the mixed Li-2(Mn1-xRux)O-3 materials which show many of the features reflecting to antiferromagnetic ordering or to the existence of paramagnetic states. Li2ArO3 and Li2RuO3 are paramagnetic down to 5K. Li-2(Mn1-xRux)O-3 compounds are antiferromagnetically ordered at T-N = 48 K for x = 0. T-N decreases as the Ru content increases and, for x = 0.8, T-N = 34 K. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - CaRuO3 is a perovskite with an orthorhombic distortion and shows the characteristics of spin-glass behavior below T-C=87 K. Magnetic studies of polycrystalline CaRu1-xTixO3 (0 LT x LT 0.1) reveal that a ferromagnetic transition at T-C=34 K appears regardless of the nonmagnetic Ti concentration. On the other hand, magnetic and Mossbauer effect studies show that T-C of CaRu1-xFexO3 (up to x=0.15) is similar to that of pure CaRuO3: however, the Fe induces a ferromagnetic structure. Charge compensation, which is assumed to be present upon Fe3+ substitution, induces the appearance of low-spin Ru5+ ions, which reduce the paramagnetic moment. Huge magnetic hysteresis loops are observed at 5 K, with coercive fields up to 30 kOe. A second magnetic transition around 250 K is observed for Fe concentrations of x=0.25 and 0.35, which is probably caused by Fe-rich clusters. This behavior is consistent with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism found in other perovskite systems.

AB - Magnetic studies of ceramic and single crystal CaRuO3 samples demonstrate that irreversibility appears in the zero-field-cooled field-cooled curves only when measured at low applied magnetic fields. A small hysteresis loop opens at low temperatures, and the remanent magnetization decreases with temperature and disappears at similar to 90 and 71 K for the ceramic and crystal samples, respectively. The easy axis for the magnetization is in the [001]. Mossbauer studies of 1% Fe-57 doped in CaRuO3 show a magnetic sextet at 4.1 K which disappears at 90 K. It is proposed that CaRuO3 is not paramagnetic, but rather shows the characteristics of short range magnetic interactions, possibly as spin-glass-like behavior. Fe-57 ions experience an exchange field from their magnetic Ru neighbors and also become magnetically ordered.
