AB - This study compared the performance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) based on fly ash addition and limestone filler. A SCC prepared with Portland cement, river sand, and limestone filler was used as a reference sample. Additional experimental self-compacting concretes with different types of fine aggregates, fillers, and special additives for increasing freeze-thaw resistance were prepared and optimized. The correlation between mix design, i.e., percentage of barite sand and additives, and properties of fresh SCC (slump-flow test, V-funnel test, and L-box test), as well as properties of hardened SCC (compressive strengths), were investigated and discussed.

AB - This paper presents a comparison performed between two calibration laboratories in several radiation qualities, using dosimeters of varying quality as transfer instruments. The goal of this work was to investigate the viability of using field-class dosimeters for official comparisons and to determine if the calibration factors for field-class dosimeters are comparable between calibration laboratories within the stated measurement uncertainties. The results of the comparison were acceptable for high-quality electronic personal dosimeters in all radiation qualities, and such dosimeters could be used as transfer instruments. On the other hand, comparison results for low-quality dosimeters were often not acceptable, either due to pronounced energy dependence, low stability, or both. Such instruments are unreliable even under well-defined laboratory conditions, and their use in routine measurements may cause doubt in official data or influence public opinion. This problem is often hidden because many dosimeters are calibrated or verified only in 137Cs beams, where the deviations are the smallest. The largest differences are found for low-energy X-ray radiation qualities, where many dosimeters have significant overresponse.

AB - The possibility of using commercial p-channel power vertical double-diffused metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (VDMOSFETs) as X-ray sensors is investigated in this case study. In this aspect, the dependence of sensitivity on both the gate voltage and the mean energy for three X-ray beams is examined. The eight gate voltages from 0 to 21 V are applied, and the dependence of the sensitivity on the gate voltage is well fitted using the proposed equation. Regarding X-ray energy, the sensitivity first increases and then decreases as a consequence of the behavior of the mass energy-absorption coefficients and is the largest for RQR8 beam. As the mass energy-absorption coefficients of SiO2 are not found in the literature, the mass energy-absorption coefficients of silicon are used. The behavior of irradiated transistors during annealing at room temperature without gate polarization is also considered.

AB - A Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) ionizing radiation detector architecture which senses trapped charge in the dielectric due to incident ionizing radiation is presented. The detector architecture increases output voltage signal as a function of trapped charge in the sensing dielectric in comparison with state of the art MOSFET (RADFET) technology. Numerical simulations were employed to help develop the device concept. It is shown that an improved voltage sensitivity is possible due to a reduction in the sensing capacitance which, unlike RADFET technology, is decoupled from the dielectric capacitance. An initial prototype of the detector has been fabricated in the silicon fabrication facility of Tyndall National Institute and irradiation experiments have been performed which confirm the improved voltage sensitivity versus commercial RADFET detectors. It is envisaged that further sensitivity increases may be possible by integrating dielectrics other than silicon dioxide.

AB - Introduction. The approach to increase the sensitivity of semiconductor radiation dosimeter with a stacked design was presented for the thick oxide pMOS transistors, also known as RadFETs (A. Kelleher et al., IEEE transactions on nuclear science 42, 1995). The sensitivity is increasing with the number of RadFETs in stacked structure, but there were limitations because of the diode reverse breakdown voltage during readout current (B. O’Connell et al., In Proceedings of the Third European Conference on Radiation and its Effects on Components and Systems, 1995). Further improvement of the stacked RadFETs device enables detecting a minimum absorbed dose of less than 50 Gy for a 20 V power supply (B. O’Connell et al., Fifth European Conference on Radiation and Its Effects on Components and Systems, 1999). Floating gate MOSFET is a modified structure of MOSFET with another polysilicon gate surrounded by oxide. The advantages of the floating gate MOSFET as a radiation dosimeter are that it does not require thick oxide fabrication and the highest sensitivity is for the zero-bias at the control gate during irradiation (S. Ilić et al., Sensors 20 (11), 2020). Experimental setup. Commercial floating gate MOSFETs designed by Advanced Linear Devices Inc. were used in this paper. Four transistors were connected in the stacked structure (drain and control gate are shorted and connected to the source of the next stacked transistor), and their threshold voltage drift values were measured before and after each irradiation portion with the same conditions. The experiment was performed at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences “Vinča”, Belgrade, Serbia. Radiation source Co-60 was used for irradiation of the components, with the following portions of the absorbed dose (Si): 10 Gy, 10 Gy, 10 Gy, 20 Gy, 50 Gy, 400 Gy, 500 Gy, 4 mGy, 45 mGy, 50 mGy, respectively (absorbed dose was 100 mGy in total). All measurements were performed in a test fixture with triax cables by Keithley 2636A Source Measure Unit. During irradiation, all stacked transistors were zero-biased. Results. Observing the threshold voltage drift of the four stacked floating gate MOS transistors, we noticed that the stack of two transistors has the most stable reading values over time (smallest drift). Considering this, we analyzed only two stacked floating gate MOS transistors as a passive dosimeter for the low doses. The results show that it is possible to detect the first portion of 10 Gy at which the sensitivity of the two stacked transistors is 23 V/Gy. For the next same portion, the sensitivity is 17 V/Gy, while for the third, the value is 7 V/Gy. However, for the next 20 Gy, there is a tiny shift, and the sensitivity is only 1 V/Gy. Decreased sensitivity with absorbed dose is a feature of the floating gate MOSFET that has been observed before for much higher doses (S. Ilić et al., Sensors 20 (11), 2020). There is a large overlap in the threshold voltage drift values for the next four radiation portions. However, for the last two largest portions, 45 and 50 mGy, there is a significant threshold voltage shift with no overlapping, and thus it is possible to determine the sensitivity of 0.0226 and 0.0214 V/Gy, respectively. Conclusions. Using a floating gate MOSFET as a low-dose passive dosimeter is possible, but recharging the floating gate and reusing this device for higher total ionizing doses should be investigated.

Using a floating gate MOSFET as a low-dose passive dosimeter is possible, but recharging the floating gate and reusing this device for higher total ionizing doses should be investigated.",

AB - Active electronic dosimeters are usually calibrated in Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories in reference photon fields, with the uncertainty which is typically around 5 % (k=2). Reference fields are established in accordance with relevant international standards – usually ISO 4037 for photon radiation. Some differences in spectra between different laboratories are unavoidable, but the effect on reference dose rates is well studied and within the above mentioned measurement uncertainty, and this is confirmed by existing interlaboratory comparisons. However, many field class dosimeters have poor energy dependence, especially in the energy range below 100 keV, which could cause large differences in calibration factors determined in different calibration laboratories under nominally the same conditions. This may also have implications for dosimeter testing or verification. In this paper, preliminary results obtained in two different calibration laboratories are presented.

AB - High-k dielectric stacks are regarded as a promising information storage media in the Charge Trapping Non-Volatile Memories, which are the most viable alternative to the standard floating gate memory technology. The implementation of high-k materials in real devices requires (among the other investigations) estimation of their radiation hardness. Here we report the effect of gamma radiation (60Co source, doses of 10 and 10 kGy) on dielectric properties, memory windows, leakage currents and retention characteristics of nanolaminated HfO2/Al2O3 stacks obtained by atomic layer deposition and its relationship with post-deposition annealing in oxygen and nitrogen ambient. The results reveal that depending on the dose, either increase or reduction of all kinds of electrically active defects (i.e., initial oxide charge, fast and slow interface states) can be observed. Radiation generates oxide charges with a different sign in O2 and N2 annealed stacks. The results clearly demonstrate a substantial increase in memory windows of the as-grown and oxygen treated stacks resulting from enhancement of the electron trapping. The leakage currents and the retention times of O2 annealed stacks are not deteriorated by irradiation, hence these stacks have high radiation tolerance.

Gamma irradiation destroys dangerous contaminants in foods such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, pesticides, and toxins. In this study, we used gamma radiation to reduce the amount of aflatoxins in milk. The results showed a 9 % - 35.26 % reduction of aflatoxin in milk compared to the control sample. Reductions in aflatoxin concentrations in milk are not proportional to the applied dose of grams of radiation due to milk coagulation.",

AB - In this paper, the feasibility of using commercial power Silicon Carbide (SiC) Schottky diodes as a current mode γ-radiation detector have been examined. Diodes with almost identical electric characteristics are purchased from two different manufacturers, On Semiconductor and RoHM. They have been tested under gamma radiation exposure from a Co-60 source. The current response during irradiation has been measured for various dose rates with reversed diode bias. Investigated range of dose rates was from 0.258 Gy/h to 26.312 Gy/h, and reverse diode bias values were 10 V, 20 V, 50 V, 100 V and 200 V. Tested Schottky diodes produce stable current response for the investigated dose rates. Although the manufacturers are different, the results show that the dosimetric characteristics of these diodes have an excellent match. Sensitivity was proportional to the applied reverse bias voltage. A simple power-law can very well describe the dependence of measured radiation-induced current on dose rate.

AB - The effect of X-rays on the p-channel power vertical double diffused metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (VDMOSFETs) was investigated. The VDMOSFETs were irradiated without gate polarization using three different Xray beams. Due to the polyenergetic nature of X-rays, their effect is much more complex than the effect of gamma radiation on transistors. The influence of X-rays on threshold voltage shift $(\Delta V_T)$ and on the creation of fixed traps (FTs) in gate oxide and on switching traps (STs) near and at oxide/semiconductor interface was analyzed. The effect of STs on T is more significant than in the case of y-radiation. The obtained results showed that the sensitivity to radiation depends on the radiation energy, and they are in accordance with the theoretical predictions.

AB - We investigated the recharging process of commercial floating gate device (EPAD) during the six different dose rates and ten irradiation cycles with the highest dose rate. Dose rate dependence of the floating gate dosimeter was observed from 1 Gy/h to 26 Gy/h (H2O). There is no change of the dosimetric characteristic with a constant dose rate of 26 Gy/h for ten cycles. The absorbed dose does not affect the drift of the threshold voltage readings after the irradiation steps. The reprogramming characteristic is not degrading with the absorbed dose for the ten irradiation cycles, giving the promising potential in the application for dosimetric purposes.

AB - Besides the evident harmful impact to human health, black carbon (BC) is considered as second important contributor to climate change due to its sunlight absorption and warming effects. It is a major component of fine atmospheric particulate matter emitted during the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass burning emissions from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Atmospheric carbon was recognized in forms of soot, black carbon, elemental carbon, inorganic carbon, organic carbon, brown carbon, etc, depending on the origin and absorption characteristics. Measurement methodologies for BC analysis in aerosol samples are mostly based on optical and thermal properties of carbon species. Here are presented results of the application of the optical analytical technique which relies on the multi-wavelenght light attenuation by black carbon component of fine particulate matter deposited on filter media. For that purpose, standard polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), quartz and carbon nanotube filters with different qualitative features and pore diameters were exposed to fine aerosol fraction at urban background monitoring site in heating and non heating seasons, using low-volume air samplers with 2.3 m3/h air flow. A multi wavelength absorption black carbon instrument (MABI) with 405 nm, 465 nm, 525 nm, 639 nm, 870 nm, 940 nm and 1050 nm LEDs was used for blank and exposed filters analysis and black carbon evaluation. Differences in obtained BC values are discussed in relation to various absorption potential of different filter media, taking into account absorption coefficients dependence on the wavelength and density. Main advantage of this method is simplicity and complementarity with nondestructive nuclear analytical techniques (EDXRF, PIXE) for elemental analysis of fine aerosol fraction on specific filter media. Differentiation between black carbon coming from fossil fuels combustion and from biomass burning sources would be additional information valuable for source apportionment analysis using positive matrix factorization and reliable discussion of air pollution observed at selected receptor site.

AB - This paper describes the possibility of using an Electrically Programmable Analog Device (EPAD) as a gamma radiation sensor. Zero-biased EPAD has the lowest fading and the highest sensitivity in the 300 Gy dose range. Dynamic bias of the control gate during irradiation was presented for the first time; this method achieved higher sensitivity compared to static-biased EPADs and better linear dependence. Due to the degradation of the transfer characteristics of EPAD during irradiation, a function of the safe operation area has been found that determines the maximum voltage at the control gate for the desired dose, which will not lead to degradation of the transistor. Using an energy band diagram, it was explained why the zero-biased EPAD has higher sensitivity than the static-biased EPAD.

AB - Cementation is the baseline technology for conditioning of low to intermediate level radioactive waste. Geopolymers, a class of alkali activated binders, are a promising new material for radioactive waste treatment. Coal fly-ash based geopolymers are a low-cost, low greenhouse gas footprint alternative to metakaolin based materials. Both the grouting of sludge/powders/liquids and encapsulation of solids/compacted waste rely on the grout maintaining optimal flow (rheological properties) during the mixing and pouring operations, and achieving a set leading to proper long term solidification (mechanical properties). The initial and final setting time for fly-ash geopolymer paste, based on the SRPS EN 196-3 standard, has been measured upon irradiation by gamma rays in a 60Co reference field positioned with a kerma air rate of 3.42 mGys–1. The binder paste was prepared using fly-ash from the TENT B power plant's electrostatic filters without further sieving, activated by water glass with module 1.5 and mixed with distilled water until a satisfactory flow was obtained, and poured into the sample and control molds. The initial and final setting times for the irradiated sample and non-irradiated control were determined by the Vicat apparatus. The irradiated sample demonstrated an 11 % shorter initial setting time, and 16 % shorter final setting time, compared to the control.

The irradiated sample demonstrated an 11 % shorter initial setting time, and 16 % shorter final setting time, compared to the control.",

AB - Adverse health effects of ionizing radiation raise a concern related to the inhalable radionuclides in the ambient air, but the additional risk comes from the coarse, fine and ultrafine atmospheric particulate matter with complex predominantly non-radioactive trace elements. Assessment of these two pollutant categories usually includes different approaches and research methodologies although both obey to similar processes and influences in the atmospheric environment. Physical-chemical characteristics and correlations of Pb-210, Be-7 and Cs-137 activity concentrations in total suspended particles and selected trace elements concentrations in the fine fraction (PM2.5) of atmospheric particulate matter, observed at the suburban monitoring station have been a subject of this study. Radionuclides data, reported in the national annual radioactivity monitoring reports, had been obtained by gamma spectrometry analysis (HPGe) of monthly composite samples, collected on daily basis, using cellulose filters and high-volume sampler (air flow about 50m3/h). Fine particulate aerosol fraction within our research had been sampled by European reference low-volume sampler (2.3 m3/h) with nozzles passing the particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm onto preconditioned PTFE filters. In this case daily aerosol samples were analyzed by non-destructive nuclear analytical technique to obtain simultaneously concentrations of trace elements. The statistics of radionuclides and trace elements concentrations was done and correlations and mid-term trends have been analyzed and discussed based on the knowledge on the radionuclides origin in the atmosphere, nuclear data, meteorological and precipitation data at the sampling site. Results have shown various correlations between the cosmogenic Be-7 and naturally occurring Pb-210 (Rn-222 descendant, from U-238 radioactive series) with Al, Si, Fe, Pb, Ca, elements pointed as tracers of soil-related factor in source apportionment receptor analysis (EPA PMF). Although the observed correlations and meteorological parameters have shown a dominantly natural origin of these elements, the industrial emissions might still contribute in some extent. Differences between elemental lead and radionuclide Pb-210 concentration allow us to distinguish shares coming from local soil and from the antropogenic activities in the investigated environments. This study has shown a capacity of naturally occurring radionuclides to be the tracers of processes in lower layers of atmosphere or the indicators of pollution origin, especially in boundary urban areas.

AB - The paper presents the application of a numerical method for the determination of the absorbed dose rate of gamma and X radiation in the dielectric thin layer of hafnium dioxide (RfO2) or SiO2, which is located in the structure of the MOS capacitor. Considering the radiation characteristics of the selected dielectrics, it can be concluded that there are advantages of RfO2 over SiO2 in the radiation field with high-energy X-rays. Similar radiation effects should be expected for the interaction of dielectric material with gamma ray photons originating from a Co-60 source, both in the dielectric layer with SiO2 and in that with RfO2. It can be concluded that for the same radiation absorbed dose into the MOS capacitor with RfO2, there are a greater number of generated electron-hole pairs, in which case the value of effective trapping efficiency is smaller than if SiO2 was used. © 2019 IEEE.

A basic case was considered for the determination of the buildup factor depending on the characteristics of the homogeneous material environment through which the transport of photons X and gamma radiation is carried out, then from the energy of photons from the radiation source, from the distance between the photon source and the point in the material environment in which the dosimetric size. After the discussion of the results of the calculation of the buildup factors for lead, iron, ordinary concrete and water, the conclusions about the efficiency of the application of individual calculation methods in a homogeneous material environment were carried out, taking into account that each of the methods presented has its advantages, as well as the limitations, depending on the focus of its application.

AB - Quality control in radiotherapy is of great importance in order to improve accuracy and reliability of radiotherapy procedures in hospitals. Minimization of the possible negative consequences of these procedures is achieved by reducing the probability of any random or systematic errors appearing, by determining the existing problems in the standard hospital procedures. One of the important methods for the radiotherapy facilities quality control is the postal thermoluminiscent dosimetry programme, co-organized by International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Health Organization, in which approximately 1700 hospitals throughout the world are participating. Radiotherapy centers in Serbia also participate in this programme, which has been executed during 2017, 2018 and 2019. During this period the number of participating radiotherapy centers in Serbia has increased from six to eight. Radiophotoluminiscent dosimeters have been irradiated in the high-energy X-ray fields generated by using linear accelerators.

AB - Chlorpyrifos (CPS) is a toxic pesticide present in several pesticide formulations, with low degradability by natural processes. The degradation leads to the toxic metabolite chlorpyrifos-oxon (CPO). The analytical techniques used for the CPS and CPO analysis, like UPLC-PDA and GC-MS, are accurate but also expensive and time consuming, and they need sample pretreatment. In the search of a more rapid and simple analytical procedure, atmospheric solids analysis probe with mass spectrometry (ASAP-MS) was optimized for the determination of CPS and CPO in apples (Malus domestica „Idared”). The identification of the analytes was based on protonated ion and isotopic pattern, while the quantification was based on peak intensities. The obtained results were confirmed by re-validated UPLC-PDA and GC-MS techniques. CPS and CPO concentrations determined by ASAP-MS and UPLC-PDA showed moderate discrepancies (on average by 10–20%), thus demonstrating that ASAP-MS can be a semiquantitative tool for the quantification of these compounds. As additional goal of this work, the efficiency of a gamma irradiation treatment to remove CPS and CPO from apples was tested by analyzing their content before and after the irradiation: 89–99% of CPS and CPO were degraded with doses of 3.5–3.8 kGy and 66–72 h of irradiation per sample. Identical degradation results were obtained by UPLC-PDA and ASAP-MS, indicating that the latter technique is well suitable to rapidly check pesticide degradation in apples. © 2019 Slovensko Kemijsko Drustvo. AB - In this paper we investigated the feasibility of using a commercial programmable floating-gate MOS transistor (EPAD) as a radiation dosimeter. The results show that EPAD with zero bias have the sensitivity of 9.2 mV/Gy and low fading. EPADs with a higher initial threshold voltage show very good linearity with the radiation dose. After its annealing at 70 °C there is a visible recovery of transfer characteristics due to a parasitic parallel resistive path that occurs during irradiation. Apart from that, the threshold voltage is slightly recovered. The programming time of an EPAD increases with the absorbed dose and depends on gate biasing during irradiation. © 2019 IEEE.

AB - The effect of γ radiation on the charge trapping and oxide properties of MIS capacitors with nanolaminated RfO2/Ah03 dielectrics are presented. The irradiation with dose of 1 and 10 Mrad generates electron traps thereby substantially enhancing the memory windows of stacks. γ radiation increases the positive oxide charge of the structures, but the effect depends also on the thermal treatment of the stacks. The used doses do not deteriorate the density of interface states, leakage currents and retention characteristics. © 2019 IEEE.
