AB - The silver and gold L-methionine capped nanoparticles (Ag and Au @LM NPs) were analyzed as prospective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors to test their potential in the treatment of cognitive impairment in depression and Alzheimer's disease. The stability of NPs, and their ability to inhibit AChE were studied by UV-Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. At the same time, TEM and SEM measurements, DLS, and zeta potential measurements were employed in the structural characterization of NPs. Nearly spherical, negatively charged Ag and Au @LM NPs, with 17 nm and 31 nm in diameter, respectively, showed moderate inhibitory potential toward AChE in the given frame of investigated concentrations. For both NPs IC50 is not reached. Furthermore, the adsorption of enzyme molecules on the surface of Ag and Au @LM NPs was demonstrated. Hence, our assumption is that inhibition of AChE is caused by blockage of the enzyme‘s active site due to the steric hindrance of NPs.

AB - Titanium alloys are finding increasing use as biomaterials due to their low elastic modulus and high damage tolerance. However, the somewhat inadequate alloy surface performance can impede their biomedical application. Surface modification methods have been therefore developed to improve the alloys' surface bioactivity and osseointegration. Laser treatment allows the alloy surface to be modified, providing it with new functionalized surface chemistry and morphology, without compromising the rest of the material properties. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine the laser-induced alterations generated on the Ti-45Nb alloy surface by an ultrashort pulsed laser. The obtained results reveal that laser beam interaction with the target material led to the formation of significant alterations in surface morphology. Surface craters, microcracks, and surface features in the form of periodic and rippled structures and solidified droplets can be observed in the irradiated area. Also, it was found that the higher damage degree along with the material depth and the higher surface roughness were achieved during the irradiation in the argon atmosphere due to the formation of the more pronounced morphological changes on the alloy surface that are induced by higher laser ablation. Furthermore, obtained results showed that alloy surface modification in air, argon, and nitrogen atmosphere additionally caused changes in the surface chemical composition. Namely, after irradiation, the presence of oxygen was observed in the central irradiated area indicating the formation of bioactive Ti-oxide surface film with content that varies with the irradiation parameters variation. Therefore, laser beam irradiation can be singled out as the surface modification method for efficient inducement of the specific surface characteristics that can provide titanium alloys with enhanced osseointegration properties.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of binary Sr, Mg ion-doping compared to the single-ion doping effects on the phase composition and morphology of hydrothermally obtained calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) powders and on the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the sintered materials. Additionally, the focus of this study was to investigate the possible utilization of the binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP compacts as dentin substitutes in restorative dentistry by evaluating their bonding ability with commercially available restorative materials using the shear bond strength test (SBS). The hydrothermally obtained mono-doped Mg5 and Sr5 showed the monophasic apatite structure, while in all co-doped samples β-TCP phase was formed, resulting in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powders. It was confirmed that co-doping with Sr and Mg ions led to the thermal stabilization of the β-TCP phase by suppressing the phase transition into α-TCP when sintered at 1200 °C. Moreover, the co-presence of Mg ions significantly improved the hardness of Sr-doped HAP from 3.74 to 5.02 GPa. Sr,Mg-HAP dental inserts were found to achieve sufficient bonding (13.53 MPa) through the micromechanical interlocking with Z250 dental composite and Single Bond Universal dental adhesive applied with a total etch approach. The SBS values obtained for the SrMg-HAP insert were similar to the literature data on bonding ability with human dentin, indicating that binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP ceramics present a promising material for application in restorative dentistry as dentin substitutes.

AB - The effects of picosecond Nd:YAG laser irradiation on chemical and morphological surface characteristics of the commercially pure titanium and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy in air and argon atmospheres were studied under different laser output energy values. During the interaction of laser irradiation with the investigated materials, a part of the energy was absorbed on the target surface, influencing surface modifications. Laser beam interaction with the target surface resulted in various morphological alterations, resulting in crater formation and the presence of microcracks and hydrodynamic structures. Moreover, different chemical changes were induced on the target materials' surfaces, resulting in the titanium oxide formation in the irradiation-affected area and consequently increasing the irradiation energy absorption. Given the high energy absorption at the site of interaction, the dimensions of the surface damaged area increased. Consequently, surface roughness increased. The appearance of surface oxides also led to the increased material hardness in the surface-modified area. Observed chemical and morphological changes were pronounced after laser irradiation of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy surface.

AB - In the present study surface alterations of the high pressure torsion (HPT)-deformed Ti[sbnd]45Nb (mass%) alloy induced by laser irradiation treatment are presented. The alloy was irradiated in air, argon, and nitrogen atmosphere using the Nd:YAG laser. Laser-induced surface modifications were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), profilometric analysis, and Vickers microhardness measurements. Alloy irradiation under a low laser output energy and a low number of accumulated pulses resulted in the formation of shallow surface craters. An increase of these irradiation parameters caused the appearance of more pronounced surface craters with microcracks and hydrodynamic effects in the form of wave-like structures, ripples, and solidified droplets and consequently caused an increase in the surface roughness. The highest value of the surface roughness of 3.062 μm was attained during the alloy irradiation in argon atmosphere under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses. Interaction of the laser beam with the alloy surface was accompanied by plasma formation and surface ablation due to the irradiation energy absorption. The maximal ablated target material volumes of 5.5 × 1014 nm3 and 2.6 × 1014 nm3 were observed after the irradiation under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses in argon and air atmosphere, respectively. Moreover, attainment of high temperatures at the alloy surface induced its chemical composition alterations. Formation of mixed Ti- and Nb-oxide surface film and absence of nitride particles at the alloy surface was detected irrespective of the irradiation atmosphere. Irradiation in air resulted in the appearance of the most pronounced surface oxide layer with the highest microhardness value which can in great merit influence an increase of the alloy bio-integration abilities and its tribo-corrosion resistance. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) presents the main mineral component of human bones and teeth, and thus is widely used bioceramic material for thehard tissue repair and regeneration. The biological HAP is never found pure in nature butdoped with multiple therapeutic ions, such as Cu, Mg, Sr, Zn, etc., which are found to play important roles in bone metabolism and growth. Hence, foreign cations have been introduced into the synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite, in order to induce a specific biological response after implementation, such as osteogenesis, angiogenesis, improved cell attachment and proliferation. However, the presence of the cations leads to the lattice distortion of the calcium-hydroxyapatite, resulting in different physico-chemical and mechanical properties. The hydrothermal synthesis of calcium hydroxyapatite leads to nanosized rod-like particles, which were found to possess properties close to those of the biological HAP. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrothermal synthesis parameters on physico-chemical and mechanical properties of mono- and binary cation-doped calcium hydroxyapatite by employing XRD, SEM and Hardness by Vickers tests. The temperature applied during the hydrothermal synthesis (150- 180 °C) was found to influence the hardness of the HAP based compacts sintered at 1200 °C.

AB - Thermo-oxidative degradation of mollusk shells to CaO through intermediate phase of CaCO3 has been investigated using various analytical techniques. Powders of shells species (Dosinia exoleta and Ostrea edulis), with particle size fractions of 0.045 – 0.125 mm, 0.125–0.2 mm, and 0.2–1 mm, were subjected to degradation at the various heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C min−1). Degradation pathway of this carbonate-rich waste material has not yet been analyzed in detail at particulate level. Understanding transformation process in air should lead to control over yield and morphology of final product. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to benchmark transformation steps at different heating rates and final decarbonation temperatures, while scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the effect of temperature on evolution of morphological changes for particles of different fractions. It was found that sintering in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) could be triggered by agglomeration of CaO crystals, enhanced by CO2 adsorption that increases surface energy. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Composite hydrogels capable of controlled drug delivery via ion exchange are an interesting group of materials for the construction of implantable drug reservoirs for electrically charged drugs. In this study, we synthesized composite poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide)/poly(acrylic acid) (PLGA-PAA) hydrogels by sequential application of UV or gamma irradiation and traditional phase inversion. Physicochemical properties of the composite PLGA-PAA hydrogels were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We examined the ion exchange capacity (IEC) and swelling behavior of these materials to determine their potential as drug reservoirs. Composite PLGA-PAA hydrogel synthesized using UV irradiation (UV-PLGA-PAA) exhibited a porous microstructure with submicron-sized hydrogel-rich aggregates and homogeneous chemical composition. Swelling behavior and IEC of this material were highly reproducible. Composite PLGA-PAA hydrogels synthesized using gamma irradiation (G-PLGA-PAAs) had a less uniform microstructure with larger pores and micron-sized hydrogel-rich aggregates while exhibiting rather inhomogeneous chemical composition. These materials showed superior swelling properties, but a more variable IEC, compared to the material fabricated using UV irradiation. Results of DSC analysis showed a dose-dependent decrease in glass transition temperature for G-PLGA-PAAs indicating the effects of PLGA chain scission. Our findings indicate that gamma irradiation is a possible alternative to UV irradiation in the synthesis of composite PLGA-PAA hydrogels which can modify or control important material properties. However, the synthesis protocol using gamma irradiation should be further optimized to improve the IEC reproducibility. In our future research, we will investigate the in vitro release of charged drugs from synthesized composite PLGA-PAA hydrogels under physiological conditions. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - This study focuses on the use of raw fly ash (FA) and modified fly ash – activated by lime (MFA), as effective and low-cost adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals (Zn2+, Pb2+and As(V)), followed by the revalorization of the exhausted adsorbent. The granulometric, elemental analysis, point of zero charge (pHPZC), radiochemical and structural characterization were conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and gamma spectrometry techniques. The optimal conditions and key factors influencing the adsorption process were assessed using the response surface method (RSM). The adsorption capacity of the MFA adsorbent for Zn2+, Pb2+and As(V) removal, calculated by the Langmuir model, was found to be 33.13, 26.06, and 29.71 mg g−1, respectively. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Due to their low desorption potential of the exhausted adsorbents, their effective reuse was established to be feasible. For this reason, the valorization of this material as an additive in construction materials was thereafter studied, where testing its toxicity leaching (TCLP) as well as the mechanical properties of construction material containing exhausted MFA confirmed its safe use. Hence, this study points to a possible “two-in-one” reuse of coal ash, initially as an adsorbent and later as an additive in a construction material.

AB - The agricultural raw industry generates large amounts of annually by-products that create disposal problems. Hitherto, there have been no reported papers about the simultaneous production of cellulase and beta-amylase from these raw materials using Paenibacillus sp. that would reduce the costs. Thus, in this paper simultaneous cellulase (CMC-ase and avicelase) and beta-amylase production using barley bran and the application of the natural isolate Paenibacillus chitinolyticus CKS1 and potential enzymes in the hydrolysis process was studied. Response surface methodology was used to obtain the maximum enzyme activity (CMC-ase 0.405 U mL(-1), avicelase 0.433 U mL(-1) and beta-amylase 1.594U mL(-1)). Scanning electron microscopy showed degradation of the lignocellulosic-starch structure of barley bran after fermentation. The CKS1 bacterial supernatant, which contains cellulases and beta-amylase, could hydrolyze cotton fibres and barley bran, respectively. The main products after enzymatic hydrolysis of cotton fibres and barley bran, glucose (0.117 (-1)(g gmat)) and maltose (0.347 (-1)(g gmat)), were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The produced enzymes could be used for hydrolysis of cotton fabric and barley bran to glucose and maltose, respectively. Application of simultaneous enzymes production using an agricultural by-product is economically and environmentally accepted and moreover, valuable biotechnological products, such as glucose and maltose, were obtained in this investigation.

Application of simultaneous enzymes production using an agricultural by-product is economically and environmentally accepted and moreover, valuable biotechnological products, such as glucose and maltose, were obtained in this investigation.",

AB - Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) based nanocomposites with unmodified and organomodified sepiolites were prepared by solution casting method. The sepiolites were modified with short (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (SEP-SI) by using covalent grafting or with long hexadecylamine (SEP-HDA) by using ionic exchange. In order to reveal the influence of the organomodification on the nanoclay dispersion and the properties of the nano composites XRD, DSC, TG, SEM, TEM, optical microscopy, melt rheology and dynamic-mechanical analyses were performed. A better dispersion was achieved when organomodified sepiolites instead of native ones were used as fillers. As deduced from the melt rheology data, by analysis of the Cole-Cole plots, the best dispersion was obtained for SEP-SI nanoclay. The thermal stability was not improved, however in the initial stages of the thereto-oxidative degradation a delay in the weight loss was observed for nanocomposites with organomodified sepiolites. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were improved in comparison to PCL, particularly for those with modified sepiolites. In terms of mechanical properties the use of sepiolite modified with HDA gave the best results, as a consequence of better interaction between longer alkyl hydrophobic part of the organic modificator and the hydrophobic PCL matrix.

AB - The densification behavior of hydroxyapatite nanorods prepared by chemical precipitation method in open reactor conditions was investigated by application of different heating rates. The non-isothermal processing was performed with 2, 10, and 50 degrees C/min up to 1200 degrees C and yielded fully dense ceramics. The implementation of the higher heating rate provided grain size refinement from micrometer level for the slowest ramp, down to 250 nm in the case of processing with 50 degrees C/min, without any drawbacks regarding final density. The relative amount of retained structural hydroxyl groups in sintered ceramics was gradually increased with the heating rate. Furthermore, the qualitative level of optical translucency was increased with a higher heating rate which can be explained by the beneficial alignment of HAp nanorods during the fast heating rate processing, achieved microstructural refinement, and higher amount of structural hydroxyl groups. AB - The enhancement of commercially pure titanium (cpTi) mechanical properties, which is required for its medical application, can be achieved by grain refinement obtained by severe plastic deformation. In addition to mechanical properties improvement, excellent corrosion resistance of ultrafine-grained (UFG) cpTi in contact with human body fluids is required. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate electrochemical behavior of UFG cpTi obtained by high pressure torsion (HPT) under a pressure of 7,8 GPa at room temperature and up to 5 rotations. Electrochemical measurements were performed in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C in order to simulate oral environment, since development of UFG cpTi is primarily aimed for dental implant applications. Electrochemical behavior of UFG cpTi was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. The obtained results indicate that HPT process, through significant grain size reduction, increases corrosion resistance of cpTi.

AB - This study highlights the potential of cotton fabric as a promising feedstock for the production of bioethanol as renewable biofuel. The effect of corona pre-treatment of non-mercerized and mercerized cotton fabrics on glucose and ethanol yield is discussed. Fermentation kinetics for ethanol production and the basic process parameters were assessed and compared. Corona pre-treatment of cotton fabrics led to an increase in the glucose yield (compared to control sample) during enzymatic hydrolysis, and consequently the ethanol yield during fermentation by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus. The system with mercerized cotton fabric was found to be superior obtaining an ethanol productivity of 0.900 g/Lh and ethanol yield of 0.94 g/g (based on glucose) after 6 h of fermentation time. The similar results were obtained during processing of waste cotton materials performed under the same process conditions. The obtained results showed that cotton fabric could become an alternative feedstock for the bioethanol production. For potential industrial implementation the waste mercerized cotton scraps would be the materials of choice. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - A range of industrial by-products are currently under the consideration as cost-effective alternatives to conventional sorbent materials for environmental clean-up and remediation applications. Bauxite residue (red mud) has demonstrated exceptionally high potential for the immobilization of cationic pollutants. Due to heterogeneity of such material, determination of the role of individual mineral phases in the overall sorption mechanism is a challenging task. To enlighten the mechanism of Co(II) sorption by mineral assemblage of the red mud, sequential extraction analysis of Co-loaded sample was combined with the microscopic and spectroscopic studies performed by Scanning Field Emission Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Sorbed Co(II) ions were found associated with operationally defined Fe,Mn-oxide and carbonate/acid soluble fractions. Binding of Co(II) by the red mud was achieved primarily by means of chemisorption/surface precipitation on Fe- and Ti-oxides. In coexistence with these highly selective surfaces, gibbsite and silica appeared to be low affinity sites for Co(II). Incongruent dissolution of sodalite phase was detected, indicating that its function was not to ensure sorption centers, but to increase the solution pH creating favorable environment for Co(II) binding by Fe- and Ti-oxides. The results demonstrate high stability of sorbed Co(II) and synergistic action of mineral constituents as essentially important property for red mud implementation as a purifying and remediation agent. AB - Significant enhancement of mechanical properties of metallic biomaterials can be achieved by grain refinement obtained by severe plastic deformation. The purpose of this study was to determine metallic ion release from commercially pure titanium (CPTi) and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy processed by high pressure torsion (HPT). The materials microstructures, in the initial state and after HPT deformation, were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The microhardness was determined along the radius of the disc-shaped samples of ultrafine-grained (UFG) CPTi and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy in order to evaluate homogeneity of HPT-processed materials. The quantities of released ions were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrophotometer for samples immersed in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C for 7 days. Also, the effect of artificial saliva pH value on metallic ion release was estimated. Obtained results revealed that the quantities of released ions from UFG CPTi and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy obtained by HPT process were higher than the quantities of released ions from CPTi and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy produced by traditional casting. This behavior can be explained by the fact that metallic ions are easily released from microstructure with smaller grains achieved by HPT process. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - Various particles and materials, including pollutants, deposited on urban surfaces are washed off by stormwater runoff during rain events. The interactions between the solid and dissolved compounds in stormwater runoff are phenomena of importance for the selection and improvement of optimal stormwater management practices aimed at minimizing pollutant input to receiving waters. The objective of this research was to further investigate the mechanisms responsible for the partitioning of heavy metals (HM) between the solid and liquid phases in urban stormwater runoff. The research involved the collection of samples from urban asphalt surfaces, chemical characterization of the bulk liquid samples, solids separation, particle size distribution fractionation and chemical and physicochemical characterization of the solid phase particles. The results revealed that a negligible fraction of HM was present in the liquid phase (less than 3% by weight), while there was a strong correlation between the total content of heavy metals and total suspended solids. Examinations of surface morphology and mineralogy revealed that the solid phase particles consist predominantly of natural macroporous materials: alpha quartz (80%), magnetite (11.4%) and silicon diphosphate (8.9%). These materials have a low surface area and do not have significant adsorptive capacity. These materials have a low surface area and do not have significant adsorptive capacity. The presence of HM on the surface of solid particles was not confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalyses. These findings, along with the results of the liquid phase sample characterization, indicate that the partitioning of HM between the liquid and solid phases in the analyzed samples may be attributed to precipitation processes. AB - This study is focused on the surface modifications of the materials that are used for antimicrobial water treatment. Sorbents of different origin were activated by Ag+-ions. The selection of the most appropriate materials and the most effective activation agents was done according to the results of the sorption and desorption kinetic studies. Sorption capacities of selected sorbents: granulated activated carbon (GAC), zeolite (Z), and titanium dioxide (T), activated by Ag+-ions were following: 42.06, 13.51 and 17.53 mg/g, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/Z, Ag/GAC and Ag/T sorbents were tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans. After 15 min of exposure period, the highest cell removal was obtained using Ag/Z against S. aureus and E. coli, 98.8 and 93.5%, respectively. Yeast cell inactivation was unsatisfactory for all three activated sorbents. The antimicrobial pathway of the activated sorbents has been examined by two separate tests - Ag+-ions desorbed from the activated surface to the aqueous phase and microbial cell removal caused by the Ag+-ions from the solid phase (activated surface sites). The results indicated that disinfection process significantly depended on the microbial-activated sites interactions on the modified surface. The chemical state of the activating agent had crucial impact to the inhibition rate. The characterization of the native and modified sorbents was performed by X-ray diffraction technique, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The concentration of adsorbed and released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial efficiency of activated sorbents was related not only to the concentration of the activating agent, but moreover on the surface characteristics of the material, which affects the distribution and the accessibility of the activating agent. AB - A cordierite/SiC composite was created in situ with reactive sintering at 1250 degrees C and 1300 degrees C. The cordierite precursor was made from commercially available spinel, alumina and quartz and was mixed with the comercial SiC powder to obtain composite materials during the sintering. It was found that cordierite particles bind efficiently with the SiC powder during sintering and that reactive sintering is an effective way to produce ceramics at a relativly low temperature. The goal of this investigation was to check the possibilities of using the silicon carbide-cordierite composite as a material resistant to the erosive wear. The fluid dynamic system of the experimental methodology was used here to produce ultrasonic erosive wear. Two kinds of SiC/cordierite samples were investigated, KS 50 and KS 30, with different mass contents of cordierite (w = 50 % and w = 30 % of cordierite). The mass loss and the level of surface degradation were measured before and during the experiment. The level of surface degradation of the samples was monitored using the Image-Pro Plus program for the image analysis. It was found that after 150 min the mass loss was below 1.3 mg and the surface degradation was below 7 %. The obtained results indicated that both samples exhibited an excellent erosion resistance during the cavitation experiment.

AB - Using Spark Plasma Sintering it is possible to produce polycrystalline ceramics of very fine microstructure and good mechanical properties. This work presents the fabrication of such ceramics using Eu3+-doped (Y0.7Gd0.3)(2)O-3 nanopowder as a starting material. We monitored the changes in the morphology of ceramic samples and their consolidation with additional thermal treatments at 650 degrees C and 1100 degrees C. The ceramics grain size remained in the sub-micron domain, even when elevated temperatures were used for annealing. The best results were obtained for the sample sintered at 1100 degrees C for 20 min, which had the smallest grain size, theoretical density, and the most intensive photoluminescence, along with the maximum hardness and appropriate fracture toughness. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and branching ratios were calculated, taking into account the difference in the effective refractive index for the nanopowder and ceramic samples. AB - Hydroxyapatite is the most suitable biocompatible material for bone implant coatings. However, its brittleness is a major obstacle, and that is why, recently, research focused on creating composites with various biopolymers. In this study, hydroxyapatite coatings were modified with lignin in order to attain corrosion stability and surface porosity that enables osteogenesis. Incorporating silver, well known for its antimicrobial properties, seemed the best strategy for avoiding possible infections. The silver/hydroxyapatite (Ag/HAP) and silver/hydroxyapatite/lignin (Ag/HAP/Lig) coatings were cathaphoretically deposited on titanium from ethanol suspensions, sintered at 900 degrees C in Ar, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion stability of electrodeposited coatings was evaluated in vitro in Kokubos simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Bioactivity was estimated by immersion in SBF to evaluate the formation of hydroxyapatite on the coating surface. A microcrystalline structure of newly formed plate-shaped carbonate-hydroxyapatite was detected after only 7 days, indicating enhanced bioactive behavior. Both coatings had good corrosion stability during a prolonged immersion time. Among the two, the Ag/HAP/Lig coating had a homogeneous surface, less roughness, and low values of contact angle.

AB - This study investigated the effect of shape, size, and surface modification of hydroxyapatite (HAP) fillers on the degree of conversion (DC) and mechanical properties of a model BisGMA/TEGDMA composite initially and after 4 weeks of storage. Ten percent of conventional glass fillers were replaced by HAP spheres (Sph), silicon-doped spheres (Sph(Si)), whiskers (Wh), silicon-doped whiskers (Wh(Si)), and nanosized HAP particles (Nano). Spheres were specifically structured agglomerates consisting of a central void and radially orientated primary particles, whereas whiskers were compact monocrystals. DC, Vickers hardness (HV), flexural strength (Fs), flexural modulus (Ef), compressive strength (Cs), and compressive modulus (Ec) were tested. There were no significant differences in the DC between all tested groups. HV decreased by 5.4-17% with the addition of HAP, while Fs increased by 13.9-29% except in Nano group (decrease by 13%). After storage, Sph and Sph(Si) groups showed similar HV, Ef, Cs and Ec and higher Fs than the control. The fracture mode of HAP spheres was through the central void whereas whiskers showed longitudinal delamination, transverse, and mixed fractures. HAP spheres with or without silicon- doping have a potential to be part of the filler content of dental composites. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. AB - Composite coatings based on lignin, obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on titanium, were investigated. The aim of this work was to produce hydroxyapatite/lignin (HAP/Lig) coatings on titanium and to investigate the effect of the lignin concentration on microstructure, morphology, phase composition, thermal behavior and cytotoxicity of the HAP/Lig coatings. An organosolv lignin was used for the production of the composite coatings studied in this research. The properties of HAP/Lig coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as the MTT test of cytotoxicity. The results showed that higher lignin concentrations protected the HAP lattice during sintering, thereby improving the stability of the HAP/Lig coatings. The cell survival of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) after proliferation indicates that the HAP/Lig coating with 1 wt% Lig electrodeposited on titanium was non-toxic with significant promise as a potential bone-repair material.
