Photoluminescent properties of spider silk coated with Eu-doped nanoceria

AB  - Spider dragline silk was coated with pure as well as Eu-doped ceria nanopowders at the room temperature. The treatment was done by immersion of the spider silkmesh into aqueous solutions of cerium nitrate (Ce(NO3)(3)) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH). Depending on the relationship between Ce3+ ion and ammonium hydroxide concentration, coated fibers exhibited a different thickness. Obtained materials were studied by means of FESEM. It was found that ceria nanoparticles of average size of 3 nm were coated along spider thread. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed crystal nature of nanoparticle coating of spider silk. By using Williamson-Hall plots, crystallite size and strain were estimated. EDS measurement confirmed the presence of Eu in spider-Eu-doped ceria composite, and according to FTIR analysis, the interaction between CeO2 and spider silk was proposed. The morphology of obtained composite was observed by TEM. The photoluminescence emission spectra of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria were measured with two different excitations of 385 and 466 nm. The two-photon excited auto-fluorescence of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria was detected using a nonlinear laser scanning microscope. Obtained composite has a potential as a fluorescent labeling material in diverse applications.

AB  - WO3/TiO2 and TiO2 coatings were prepared on titania substrates using facile and cost-effective plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, UV vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With increasing duration of PEO process, the monoclinic WO3 phase became dominant and new monoclinic WO2.95 phase appeared. The optical absorption edge in the WO3/TiO2 samples, enriched with WO3/WO2.96 phase, was shifted to the visible region. The photocatalytic efficiency of WO3/TiO2 and pure TiO2 samples was evaluated by performing the photodegradation experiments in an aqueous solution of Rhodamine 6G and Mordant Blue 9 under the visible and UV light. The WO3/TiO2 catalysts are much more efficient than pure TiO2 under visible light and slightly better under UV light. The improvement of photocatalytic activity in the visible region is attributed to better light absorption, higher adsorption affinity and increased charge separation efficiency. AB  - In this work we investigated the photoluminescence properties of Y2O3: Er3+, Eu3+ as a function of temperature and the possibility to use this material as a temperature sensor. Photoluminescence emission measurements with 532 nm laser excitation were recorded in the temperature range from 303 up to 573 K. The measured intensity ratio of erbium S-4(3/2) - GT I-4(15/ 2) and europium D-5(0) - GT F-7(2) emission lines was used for determination of the temperature calibration curve. These emission lines are intense, narrow and well defined. The distance between the lines, being 47 nm, can be easily measured even with a low-resolution spectrometer. The calculated relative sensitivity of the temperature sensor was 1.4% K-1 at 303 K, in the physiological temperature range, meaning that it could be successfully applied in biological studies.

Comparative structural and photoluminescent study of Eu3+-doped La2O3 and La(OH)(3) nanocrystalline powders

AB  - Eu3+-doped La2O3 nanocrystalline powder was prepared by polymer complex solution method and further used for preparation of Eu3+-doped La(OH)(3). Structural and optical characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffraction and photoluminescent spectroscopy. XRD measurements confirmed the formation of hexagonal La2O3 and its recrystallization into La(OH)3 in a humid atmosphere. Excitation spectra show redshift of host lattice and charge transfer emission bands in La(OH)3 while bands that correspond to Eu3+- f-f transitions are placed at same wavelengths in both samples. Photoluminescence spectra recorded over the temperature range from 10 K to 300 K show that intensities of emission lines in Eu3+-doped La2O3 do not depend on temperature as much as in La(OH)3 sample. Observed dominant D-5(0) - GT :F-7(2) and markedly visible D-5(0)- GT F-7(0) emissions in doped La2O3 indicate that Eu3+ ion is located in a structural site without an inversion center. On the other hand, in Eu3+-doped La(OH)3 D-5(0)- GT F-7(0) transition is barely visible while D-5(0)- GT F-7(2) is not prominent, and with temperature drop three D-5(0)- GT F-7(j) (J=1, 2, 4) transitions become almost of the same intensity. In both La2O3 and La(OH)3 structures Eu3 ion replaces La3+ in non-centrosymmetric C-3v and C-3h crystallographic sites, respectively, and difference in symmetry of the crystal field around europium ion is explained by comparing shape and volume of these sites. Decay times of the 5D0- level recorded over the temperature range 10-300 K revealed that emission lifetime values in La2O3 (-0.7 ms) are almost two times higher than in La(OH)3 (-0.4 ms), and unlike in La2O3, lifetime in La(OH)(3) is temperature dependent. AB  - Luminescence temperature sensing with Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles was tested over a temperature range of 307-533K. Anatase Eu3+:TiO2 nanoparticles of 10-20 nm in diameter are prepared using the hydrolytic sol-gel route. In photoluminescence emission spectra of Eu3+:TiO2 nanoparticles two distinct spectral regions are observed: the high energy spectral region associated with the trap emission of the TiO2 host, and the low energy spectral region with well resolved emission peaks of the Eu3+ ions. The ratio between Eu3+ emission and TiO2 trap emission, and the Eu3+ emission decay shows strong temperature dependence, and are tested for temperature sensing. It is found that relative sensor sensitivity ranges from 0.17 to 2.43%K-1 and is among the highest recorded for inorganic nanosensors. Temperature resolution is better than 1 K over a wide temperature range and reaches 0.33 K for decay measurements and 0.46K for the fluorescence intensity ratio measurements at about 400 K. In photoluminescence emission spectra of Eu3+:TiO2 nanoparticles two distinct spectral regions are observed: the high energy spectral region associated with the trap emission of the TiO2 host, and the low energy spectral region with well resolved emission peaks of the Eu3+ ions. The ratio between Eu3+ emission and TiO2 trap emission, and the Eu3+ emission decay shows strong temperature dependence, and are tested for temperature sensing. It is found that relative sensor sensitivity ranges from 0.17 to 2.43%K-1 and is among the highest recorded for inorganic nanosensors. Temperature resolution is better than 1 K over a wide temperature range and reaches 0.33 K for decay measurements and 0.46K for the fluorescence intensity ratio measurements at about 400 K. AB  - In this paper we demonstrate visible up-conversion emission of Er3+ doped (Lu0.5Y0.5)(2)O-3 nanophosphor and discuss possible mechanisms for pumping the upper energy levels of Er3+ ions. Polymer complex solution synthesis yields well crystalline, pure-phase cubic nanopowder with particle size in the 20-50 nm range. Red, green and blue up-conversion emission is measured under near-infrared excitation (1 540 nm), over the temperature range 10-300 K. The red/green intensity ratio indicates that the mechanism responsible for populating red up-conversion is temperature dependent. Decay times are found to be around 0.25 ms for red and green, and around 70 mu s for blue emission.

AB  - New red sesquioxide phosphor, Eu(3+)doped (Y0.5La0.5)(2)O-3, was synthesized in the form of nanocrystalline powder with excellent structural ordering in cubic bixbyite-type, and with nanoparticle sizes ranging between 10 and 20 nm. Photoluminescence measurements show strong, Eu3+ characteristic, red emission (x = 0.66 and y = 0.34 CIE color coordinates) with an average D-5(0) emission lifetime of about 1.3 ms. Maximum splitting of the F-7(1) manifold of the Eu3+ ion emission behaves in a way directly proportional to the crystal field strength parameter, and experimental results show perfect agreement with theoretical values for pure cubic sesquioxides. This could be used as an indicator of complete dissolution of Y2O3 and La2O3, showing that (Y0.5La0.5)(2)O-3:Eu3+ behaves as a new bixbyite structure oxide, M2O3, where M acts as an ion having average ionic radius of constituting Y3+ and La3+. Emission properties of this new phosphor were documented with detailed assignments of Eu3+ energy levels at 10 K and at room temperature. Second order crystal field parameters were found to be B-20 = -66 cm(-1) and B-22 = -665 cm(-1) at 10 K and B-20 = -78 cm(-1) and B-22 = -602 cm(-1) at room temperature, while for the crystal field strength the value of 1495 cm(-1) was calculated at 10 K and 1355 cm(-1) at room temperature.

AB  - The surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with salicylate-type ligands consisting of an extended aromatic ring system, specifically 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, 3,5-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 3,7-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, was found to alter the optical properties of nanoparticles in a similar way to salicylic acid. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer (CT) complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and a reduction in the band gap upon the increase in the electron delocalization when including an additional ring. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of a salicylate-type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring the six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From both absorption measurements in methanol/water = 90/10 solutions and steady-state quenching measurements of modifier fluorescence upon binding to TiO2 in aqueous solutions, stability constants in the order of 10(3) M-1 have been determined at pH 2 and pH 3. Fluorescence lifetime measurements, in the presence and absence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles, indicated that the fluorescence quenching process is primarily static quenching, thus proving the formation of a nonfluorescent CT complex. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were then compared with the experimental data.

Band gap energies change slightly with rare earth incorporation, from 3.32 eV for undoped TiO2 to 3.15 eV, 3.25 eV and 3.29 eV for Tb3+, Sm3+ and Eu3+ doped TiO2. Photoluminescence of Eu3+ and Sm3+ originated from three different sites in TiO2 nanocrystals have been identified with the laser-excited site-selective spectroscopy measurements at 10 K. One site exhibits broad emission peaks, which are ascribed to the distorted lattice site near the surface. Other two sites, associated with the inner lattice, show significantly sharper fluorescence lines as a consequence of an ordered crystalline environment. The emission decays of Eu3+ and Sm3+ have similar values for inner-lattice sites and longer lifetimes for near-surface sites. The luminescence of Tb3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals was immeasurably weak. AB  - Samples of Lu2O3:Eu3+ (3 at. % Eu) and Lu2O3:Sm3+ (1 at. % Sm), were prepared via the polymer complex solution method using poly(ethylene glycol) as the fuel and as nucleation agent for crystallization process. Knowing that lutetium oxide has high chemical stability and temperature resistance, in this study, the possibility for its application in high-temperature phosphor thermometry was investigated. This non-contact technique uses the thermal dependence of phosphor fluorescence to measure temperature remotely. The structural and morphological properties were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained results confirmed that this synthesis yields the desired crystalline structure with particle sizes in the range from 30 to 50 nm. Photoluminescence emission measurements were recorded in the temperature range from ambient up to 873 K. The obtained results demonstrated the performance of Eu3+- and Sm3+-doped Lu2O3 as high temperature thermographic phosphors of very good sensitivity.

AB  - Herein we presented polymer complex solution method for production of well crystalline europium doped Y2O3 nanopowders. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) of five different molecular weights is used both as a fuel and as a nucleation agent for the crystallization. Powders were cold-pressed and sintered to obtain ceramics. SEM images taken from ceramic pellets indicate formation of a dense structure, with a pronounced grain growth and low pore concentration. Luminescence emission spectra of powders and ceramics are similar, and in good agreement with theoretical data. Lifetimes of Eu3+5D0 level in nanocrystalline powders are higher compared to one observed in bulk, confirming in this case theory of lifetime lengthening in nanophosphors due to the change of effective refraction index. As expected, lifetime values in ceramic samples decrease toward the value in bulk Y2O3. The optical filling factor is calculated from observed decay times, providing a measure of discrepancy between powder and bulk state regarding their luminescent properties. Low-cost, portable photoacoustic setup for solid samples

AB  - We have developed a low-cost, portable photoacoustic instrument. The device consists of a detection unit comprising a photoacoustic cell with an embedded laser diode or a light-emitting diode, a photodiode, an electret microphone (60 x 40 x 40 mm(3)), and a signal processing and power supply unit in a box containing batteries and electronics (160 x 140 x 60 mm(3)). A PC or portable computer is required to operate the device and for data processing. The weight of the instrument without the computer is 1.70 kg. The computer, or more precisely, its sound card is the essential part of the apparatus because it generates the signal for the laser diode or light-emitting diode modulation and processes signals from the microphone and photodiode. The computer sound card is used as a dual-phase lock-in amplifier. The software used for the control of the setup was also developed in course of this work. The photoacoustic instrument presented here allows measurements and quantitative analysis of numerous solid-state samples. It is simple in design and use, having a reasonable weight and portability.
