AB - Coupled oxide ceramic materials possess attractive properties, such as high surface areas, tunable pore size and shapes, various crystal structures, and a multitude of compositions, which endow them with potential applications in various areas of science and technology. Among these, porous zirconia-based ceramic materials, which can be considered as semiconductors with high band gap energy of ~5eV, have been the subject of intense research because of the potential new extensive use in photocatalytical degradation of organic pollutants. In the scope of this study mesoporous coupled alumina/zirconia composites were synthesized via the sol-gel method, followed by heat treatment at 500°C, for 5h. The XRD pattern of composites has shown that the addition of zirconia disrupts the crystallinity of alumina. The composites with higher zirconia content are characterized by peaks of the tetragonal zirconia phase. On the basis of the calculated flat band potentials from Mott-Schottky plots and optical band gaps, the conduction and valence band potentials were estimated for the composite semiconductors. Photocatalytic activity of synthesized samples in the process of degradation of trichlorophenol was obtained and correlated with band potentials and optical properties.

AB - This work presents the investigation of electrochemical properties of three alumina samples with different structure and crystal water content. The samples were characterized by XRD and FTIR-ATR analysis, confirming the presence of trihydrate, monohydrate and anhydrous alumina. The samples were used as modifiers of carbon paste electrodes. Their electrochemical behavior toward ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox probe was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical behavior toward ruthenium hexamine redox probe was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The response toward quinone/hydroquinone redox probe was evaluated in buffered and unbuffered solution by cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the surface chemistry of investigated samples influenced their electrochemical properties.

AB - Porous cobalt-doped alumina catalysts were synthetized using the sol-gel method. The synthesized materials were calcined at 500 °C, 1000 °C and 1100 °C and denoted as CoA-500, CoA-1000 and CoA-1100, respectively. Catalysts were characterized using XRPD, H2-TPR and low temperature N2 physisorption techniques. Applied techniques showed that the annealing temperature affects the structural and textural properties of the catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were investigated in the degradation of tartrazine in the presence of Oxone®. The influence of the mass of catalyst, reaction time, reaction temperature and initial pH were investigated. The temperature increase was beneficial for the dye degradation rate. CoA-500 was proved to be the most efficient among the investigated catalysts. The reaction followed the pseudo-first order kinetics for all investigated temperatures for all three catalysts. All cobalt-doped alumina catalysts were found to be efficient in the Oxone® induced catalytic degradation of tartrazine with CoA-500 showing the best performance.

AB - Pure and a series of Fe3+ doped zirconia nanopowders were synthesized combining colloidal chemistry and solvothermal method from organometallic precursors in order to correlate doping and properties of zirconia matrix. After annealing of washed nanopowders at 600 °C, detailed characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis absorption and luminescence, infrared and electron paramagnetic spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and BET measurements. Zirconia samples had mixed monoclinic and tetragonal crystalline phase; increasing Fe3+ ions concentration was followed by increasing of tetragonal phase share. In the sample with highest Fe3+ concentration, hematite can be detected. Also, UV/Vis spectrophotometry showed that Fe3+ doping lowers effective band gap of zirconia matrix from 4.5 eV (bulk value) to 2.1 eV for doped/nanocomposite samples. EPR measurements proved presence of dopant and showed that isolated Fe3+ ions in zirconia matrix exist in both crystalline phases; monoclinic and tetragonal (g 4.8 and g 4.27–4.2, respectively) surroundings. Zirconia samples were also successfully used as photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of 2, 4, 6, trichlorophenol. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - Alumina powders, pure and doped with nickel, were synthetized by sol-gel method and calcined at 500, 900 and 1100oC in order to obtain mesoporous structures with a high specific surface area, well adapTab. to catalytic application. The characterization of samples was performed by XRD, EPR spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). XRD analysis showed that the addition of Ni2+, as well as the annealing temperature, affects the structural properties of the obtained composites. EPR analysis revealed the traces of Fe3+ impurities, the presence of oxy defects in alumina and Ni2+ in tetrahedral position for samples calcined at 1100oC. The impedance of the Nafion/alumina modified GCE depended on combined effect of porous structure and surface properties of alumina samples. The electrochemical behavior of a glassy carbon electrode modified with Ni (II)-doped aluminas was studied in 0.5 M NaOH solution, with and without methanol. The electrochemical activity of nickel-doped alumina composites was dictated by the amount of present NiO impurity.

AB - Solvothermal synthesis of ZrO2-TiO2 binary oxides and pure counterparts at 150 degrees C in water/isopropanol media is presented. Titanium (IV) isopropoxide and zirconium (IV) propoxide were used as precursors. XRD and TEM techniques were used for structural and morphological characterization of obtained samples. XPS spectra of mixed oxide samples were compared in order to correlate composition of samples with surface properties and presence of defects. Relative positions of defect states within band-gaps of semiconductors were estimated from UCPL spectra. UV-Vis DRS spectra revealed that both pure oxides experienced red shift of absorption thresholds compared to reference data. Photocatalytic activities of all samples were probed under simulated Solar light on three model compounds: phenol, 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 2, 4, 6-trichlorphenol (TCP). Pure TiO2 showed the highest photocatalytic activity in the case of phenol. However, pure ZrO2 and binary oxides showed higher photoactivity in degradation of 4-CP and TCP. The activity of wide band-gap semiconductors under simulated Solar light in photodegradation of phenol and its derivatives is most probably the consequence of formation of charge transfer complexes between pollutant molecules and semiconductors surface.

The activity of wide band-gap semiconductors under simulated Solar light in photodegradation of phenol and its derivatives is most probably the consequence of formation of charge transfer complexes between pollutant molecules and semiconductors surface.",

AB - A simple bottom-up method for the preparation of novel and very efficient photocatalytic nanocomposite system based on carbonized form of polyaniline (PANI) and colloidal TiO2 nanocrystals has been developed. The carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized in a two-step procedure. Firstly, non-carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized by the chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline (ANI) with ammonium peroxydisulfate, in the presence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) (d 4.5 nm). Initial [TiO2 NANI] mole ratios were 20, 50, and 80. In the second step, following the polymerization process, the carbonization of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was performed by thermal treatment in an inert atmosphere at 650 degrees C. The morphological and structural properties of the carbonized nanocomposites were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The accomplishment of complete carbonization of PANI in PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The appearance of anatase and rutile crystal forms in TiO2 NPs upon carbonization, with mass ratio depending on the initial molar ratio of ANI and TiO2 NPs was revealed by XRD measurements, TEM, SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were evaluated following the photocatalytic degradation processes of Rhodamine B and Methylene blue. Carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites showed higher photocatalytic efficacy compared to bare TiO2 NPs and non-carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites. The porosity and surface structure of carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites, as well as crystalline structure of TiO2, affect photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - We report the successful, low temperature synthesis of pure and Fe-doped titania nanoparticle (NP) powders, using organic Ti- and Fe-precursors. The properties of the synthesized titania based materials were obtained using XRD, UV/vis and EPR spectroscopy and BET measurements. The doping of TiO2 induced a shift in the absorption threshold towards the visible spectral range, compared to pure titania. The process of annealing induced an increase in crystallinity and particle sizes in the obtained materials. The photocatalytic activity, using simulated Solar light (Vitalux lamp), of our samples was checked by following the photodegradation reaction of Rhodamine B and trichlorophenole as model compounds. AB - We present a hydrothermal method for synthesis of zirconia nanopowders: pure and with incorporated Si4+ ions. Zirconyl chloride and tetraethyl orthosilicate were used as precursors. As prepared powders were annealed at 600 degrees C and characterized using structural (XRD), morphological (SEM and TEM) and optical techniques (UV/vis DR, FTIR and photoluminescence spectroscopy). Their textural properties (BET method) and photocatalytic activity toward degradation of model compounds (tricholophenol and Rhodamine B) using simmulated solar light were obtained. We showed that by using hydrothermal synthesis method pure monoclinic ZrO2 highly crystalline powder can be obtained. Incorporation of Si4+ ions induced stabilization of tetragonal crystalline phase at room temperature and decreasing of particle sizes. Incorporation of Si4+ ions in zirconia matrix also resulted in increase of specific area of nanopowders. FTIR measurements were used as proof for existence of Zr-O-Si bond. Effective band gap of zirconia powders was reduced from 5 (pure ZrO2) to 3.8 eV for samples with Si4+ ions. All zirconia powders showed significant photocatalytic activity regarding degradation of triclorophenol and no activity regarding RB (Rhodamine B dye). Photocatalytic activity of zirconia was increased by incorporation of Si ions in the host matrix. The source of this observation is discussed correlating all obtained properties of pure and Si-incorporated nanopowders. Optimization of synthesis parameters and composition of zirconia samples obviously can lead to their photocatalytic activity comparable to Degussa TiO2 powder, famous and commercial photocatalyst. AB - A statistical design was used to investigate the effect of various processing conditions on the structure of sol-gel derived Mg(II) doped alumina. Six process variables were selected based on the Plackett-Burman design: concentration of magnesium nitrate, time and temperature of alcohol evaporation, temperature and time of annealing and heating rate were changed at two levels. For every set of conditions, samples with different specific surface area and degree of crystallinity were obtained. Analysis of the results showed that the annealing temperature, heating rate and concentration of magnesium nitrate were the main factors affecting the average crystallite size of the predominant alumina phase. In the case of the specific surface area, two of selected six variables had pronounced effects; however, the temperature of annealing was more effective than others. The present results showed that the proposed model that uses crystallite size as a response variable is preferable to other research.

AB - ZnO/ZnWO4 composite rod-like nanoparticles were synthesized by low-temperature soft solution method at 95 A degrees C with different reaction times (1-120 h), in the presence of non-ionic copolymer surfactant Pluronic F68. Obtained nanoparticles had diameters in the range around 10 nm and length of 30 nm. Optical properties such as reflection and room temperature photoluminescence of obtained samples showed strong dependence on their crystallinity and composition. Photocatalytic activity of ZnO/ZnWO4 nanopowders was checked using photodegradation of selected dyes as model system. Obtained results were correlated with specific surface area, particle sizes, crystallinity and ZnO/ZnWO4 ratio of the samples. As crystallinity of ZnWO4 component in the ZnO/ZnWO4 increase, photocatalytic activity also increases. The main findings can be explained by charge transfer reactions that follow light absorption by ZnO and ZnWO4 in nanocomposite.

AB - Electrochemical behavior of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW)/acid-activated bentonite (AAB) powders with various loadings of HPW was investigated. The physicochemical properties of the prepared powders were examined by X-ray powder diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, atomic force microscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The results indicated that the prepared powders are composed mainly of oriented domains of large rock blocks, probably resulting from a preferable deposition of bentonite particles having a face-to-face interaction. The particles had a mainly disordered mesoporous structure with a pore volume that varied according to the pore size in the range of 2-50 nm. In addition, the particles had crystallite size between 4.9 and 9.0 nm. The electrocatalytic activities of prepared HPW/AAB electrodes were studied in the oxidation of NO2- and the results revealed that the electrodes possessed relatively higher nitrite oxidation currents than AAB electrode. The best electroactivity was observed for HPW3/AAB electrode (AAB + + 20 wt % HPW) and the limit of detection (3 sigma) was determined as 8 mu M.

AB - Active porous alumina coatings were obtained by deposition of boehmite sol on stainless steel (SS) substrate by spray pyrolysis method. The temperature and the doping of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and La(3+) in the boehmite sol effects on the textural and structural properties and surface morphology of alumina coatings on stainless steel samples are presented. It was found that the addition of polyethylene glycol combined with La3+ to the boehmite sol before spraying improves the thermal stability of porous alumina coatings. X-ray diffraction patterns of a doped sample, even after 5 h at 1000 degrees C, point out to the presence only of delta-Al(2)O(3), with a S(BET) of 74 m(2)/g. XPS data and SEM photographs of coated samples show that alumina were well deposited on the metallic supports. The absence of any lanthanum compounds indicates very well homogeneous dispersion of La(3+)-ions on the surface of alumina crystallites. AFM images show sphere like alumina grains and agglomerates with surface roughness from 60 to 180 nm, depending on temperature and doping. Surface roughness of doped alumina samples was higher than that of non-doped. It was pointed out that spray pyrolysis method enables preparation of alumina layers with relatively high specific surface area, suitable for applications as catalysts supports. AB - Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), with different porosity parameters were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with ethylene diamine (EDA). The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The sorption rate of the modified copolymer, poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en for Cu(II) ions determined under non-competitive conditions was relatively rapid, i.e. the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. Batch sorption capacities for Cu(II), Fe(II), Mn(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cr(III) and Pt(IV) ions were determined under non-competitive conditions in the pH range 1.25-5.5 at room temperature. The maximum sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en under non-competitive conditions were 1.30 mmol/g for Pt(IV) at pH 5.5, 1.10 mmol/g for Cu(II) at pH 5.5, 1.06 mmol/g for Pb(II) at pH 1.25 and 0.67 mmol/g for Cd(II) ions at pH 5.5. The selectivity of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en towards Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Pt(IV) ions was investigated under competitive conditions. Poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en showed high selectivity for Pt(IV) over Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions at pH 2.1. At pH 5.5, the metal sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en decreased in the order: Cu(II) GT Co(II) GT Pt(IV) approximate to Ni(II) GT Pb(II). Regeneration of the Cu(II), Ni(H) and Pb(II) loaded poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en with 2 M HIS04 showed that the polymer can be reused in several sorption/desorption cycles. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
