Antimicrobial effects of carbonaceous material functionalized with silver

AB  - Carbonaceous materials as well as its form functionalized with metallic silver have been prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of fructose. Results are presented to show that nanostructured silver was obtained through the functionalization process. The carbonaceous materials were characterized by: nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement, XRD, SEM/EDS and FTIR. Samples functionalized with silver were analyzed by: XRD and SEM/EDS. The XRD analysis showed that the carbonaceous materials functionalized with silver by hydrothermal carbonization process were successfully performed. Size of silver particles was found to be approximately 32 nm, indicating formation of nanostructure. All samples were tested as an antimicrobial agent for water disinfection. Presence of nanostructured silver in the sample containing 1 mg/mL carbonaceous materials significantly decreased the number of CFU (dCFU = 97.33 %) if compared to the same sample containing the same amount of carbonaceous materials but without of silver (dCFU 65.33 %).

AB  - In presented paper, influence of temperature, precursor concentration and different hydroxides on properties of activated carbon obtained from saccharose were investigated. The samples were prepared by hydrothermal treatment and activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH. Two saccharose concentrations (0.5, 1.0 mol/dm3) and three temperatures (160, 200, 240 ºC) were changed in hydrothermal treatment. Activation processes were performed at 750 ºC under N2 atmosphere. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry, elemental analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The obtained samples were tested for potential application in dyes removal from water solutions.
AB  - У представљеном раду испитани су утицај температуре, концентрације полазног материјала и различитих хидроксида на својства активираних угљеничних материјала добијених из сахарозе. Узорци су припремљени хидротермалним третманом и активирани помоћу KOH, NaOH и LiOH. Две различите концентрације воденог раствора сахарозе (0,5 1,0 mol/dm3) и три температуре (160, 200, 240 ºC) су примењене у хидротермалном третману. Процеси активације су изведени на 750 ºC у атмосфери азота. Узорци су карактерисани рендгендском дифрактометријском анализом, елементарном анализом, адсорпционо-десорпционим мерењем азота, инфрацрвеном спектрометријом са Фуријеовом трансформацијом, скенирајућом електронском микроскопијом и термијском анализом. AB  - In the presented paper, activated carbons were prepared from fructose and glucose, and activating agents (KOH, NaOH, LiOH) by hydrothermal treatment (HTC) treatment. After preparation, samples were characterized in details. Different techniques were used: x-ray powder diffraction analysis, Raman spectral analysis, elemental analysis, and determination of textural and morphological properties. Obtained results showed dependence of investigated properties and the nature of precursors (glucose or fructose) as well as the type of hydroxides used as activating agents. After characterization, samples were tested as materials for heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+and Zn2+) and methylene blue removal. Also, adsorption experiments were performed on wastewaters taken from tailings of the lead and zinc mine and kinetic of the methylene blue removal was studied. The factors which distinguished the KOH activated samples were high yield (~14%), content of organic carbon (63–74%), porosity and specific surface area (SBET~700–1360 m2/g), a low degree of the crystal phase, indications that potassium ions may be included in heavy metals removal, good removal of the heavy metal ions (~47–59 mg/g for Pb2+, ~21–27 mg/g for Cd2+and ~6–10 mg/g for Zn2+) and fast (~10–30 min) and good methylene blue (~60–200 mg/g) removal.

AB  - Activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared using plane tree seed (PTS) as a cheap and renewable raw material. The plane tree seeds were firstly treated combining magnetic (MM) and ultrasonic mixing (USM) during 0.5, 1 and 3 h in 1 M, 3 M and 6 M of H3PO4 solutions, and then activated at 260 degrees C during 20 h (low temperature hydrothermal carbonization-low HTC) in above mentioned solutions of the same molarity. The influence of combined mixing and activation processes on physical, structural and morphological properties, and their optimization was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

AB  - The carbon fiber based composites: carbon fiber reinforced plastic and 3D carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites were exposed to the Nd3+: YAG laser beams (1064 nm). Experimental parameters for the interaction of the laser beam with 1.5 Hz pulse frequency and with pulse duration 0.7 ms varied: energy density between 128 and 1915 J cm(-2), pulse energy from 1 to 3 J and mean power in the range between 0.4 and 6.5 kW. Apparently, the energy absorbed by the composite samples was mainly converted into thermal energy, causing a range of damages, from instantaneous evaporation to cracking and melting, which resulted in a crater-like damage. Program ImageJ was executed for quantitative analysis of generated damages based on micrographs obtained by SEM and light microscopes. Obtaied results enable identification of the laser induced changes in the material. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB  - Activated carbon was prepared using plane tree seed as a cheap and renewable raw material. The samples were prepared by carbonization under N-2 atmosphere up to 850 degrees C, and activation in CO2 atmosphere at different both temperatures (750 and 850 degrees C) and times of activation (0.3,1 and 2 h). The influence of activation parameters on physicochemical properties was studied by XRPD, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, N-2 physisorption, SEM and electrochemical methods. The pore structure was correlated to the specific capacitance and the amount of hydrogen stored, in alkaline, neutral and acidic electrolyte solution. The relationship of asymmetrical shape of CV curves with the porosity of samples has served to better understand some unclear issues related to the complex mechanism of charge storage. The sample activated at 850 degrees C for 2 h displayed the best behavior. At a high scan rate of 300 mV s(-1), its capacitance, amounted to similar to 26.8 mu F cm(-2) 19.69 mu F cm(-2) and 25.8 mu Fcm(-2) in KOH, Na2SO4, and H2SO4 solutions, respectively. AB  - Laser beam interaction with carbon based material (glassy carbon) is analyzed in this paper. A Nd3+:YAG laser beam (1.06 mu m, i.e., near infrared range (NIR)) in ms regime with various energy densities is used. In all experiments, provided in applied working regimes, surface damages have occurred. The results of laser damages are analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Image J software is used for quantitative analysis of generated damages based on micrographs obtained by light and SEM microscopes. Temperature distribution in the exposed samples is evaluated by numerical simulations based on COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5 software in a limited energy range.

AB  - Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present the results of interaction occurring during the exposition of some specific carbon textile materials obtained in laboratory conditions to beams of various laser types. Design/methodology/approach - Carbon fabric materials - fiber, felt and cloth - obtained from different precursor materials and prepared at various process conditions (oxidized, partially carbonized, carbonized, graphitized), were exposed to pulses of various lasers (Nd3+:YAG, alexandrite, ruby). Findings - Depending on the laser power, plasma and destructive phenomena occurred. In the case of an interaction between a Nd3+: YAG laser beam and specimens of thickness in millimeter range, the authors have estimated the threshold of the energy density for drilling and discussed the possible models of the interaction. Research limitations/implications - The results have implications in the estimations of quality as well as in the improvement of material processing, giving some new light to the changes of mechanical and optical constants of the material, as well as to the changes of carbon groups of the material, which would be useful for different types of modeling. Future research will be in the interaction of laser beams with various textile materials, where the investigation would cover the microstructure changes and the implications on cloth cutting and welding, concerning the damages as well as relief structures, specially renew for fs laser regimes. Originality/value - The area of laser applications in the textile industry is supported by scientific and applicative exploration. However, fewer results are concerned with deep introspection into the microstructure of the damages considering the laser interaction with carbon fiber and other carbon-based textiles.

AB  - An ultrasonic irradiation was applied for the impregnation by chemical agents in the chemical activation process of new type of active carbon precursor. Plane tree seed, due to the unique fibrous structure and low cost is a promising eco-friendly raw material for the preparation of activated carbon materials. Ultrasonic irradiation was used for the impregnation step allowing the chemical activation by different agents: potassium or sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide and pyrogallol. The porous structures were examined by nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms at 77 K and electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry. The textures of these materials were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The application of ultrasonic irradiation in the impregnation step increased surface area of the final material more than two times in comparison to the material which impregnation in the activation process was by conventional stirring. Ultrasonic irradiation enhances the chemical activation process and the activated carbon fibrous materials with nanoporous structure were obtained by impregnation of seeds with alkaline hydroxides. Total surface areas of these samples were 976 m(2) g(-1), and 1130 m(2) g(-1). These fibers have total specific capacitance as high as 125 F g(-1) and 53 F g(-1) which major fraction in both cases originate from internal micropores structure. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The effect of partially carbonized fibers on the mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composites

Stabilized PAN fibers were partially carbonized at temperatures ranging from 400 to 1000 degrees C and reinforced with phenolic resin, resole type. Cured composite were carbonized up to 1000 degrees C in an inert atmosphere. Monofilament tensile test strength, Youngs modulus and tensile strength of partially carbonized fibers were determined. Mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composites (flexural strength and flexural modulus) determined by using three-point bending test. The effect of partially carbonized fibers on the mechanical properties of C/C composites was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) through analysis of the fracture surface. The C/C composite reinforced with partially carbonized fibers at 600 degrees C showed quite satisfactory flexural strength. AB  - Interaction of pulsed transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO(2)-laser radiation at 10.6 mu m with nanoporous activated carbon cloth was investigated. Activated carbon cloth of different adsorption characteristics was used. Activated carbon cloth modifications were initiated by laser pulse intensities from 0.5 to 28 MW/cm(2), depending on the cloth adsorption characteristics. CO(2) laser radiation was effectively absorbed by the used activated carbon cloth and largely converted into thermal energy. The type of modification depended on laser power density, number of pulses, but mostly on material characteristics such as specific surface area. The higher the surface area of activated carbon cloth, the higher the damage threshold.

AB  - Active carbon hollow fibers were prepared from regenerated polysulfone hollow fibers by chemical activation using: disodium hydrogen phosphate 2-hydrate, disodium tetraborate 10-hydrate, hydrogen peroxide, and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. After chemical activation fibers were carbonized in an inert atmosphere. The specific surface area and porosity of obtained carbons were studied by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K, while the structures were examined with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The activation process increases these adsorption properties of fibers being more pronounced for active carbon fibers obtained with disodium tetraborate 10-hydrate and hydrogen peroxide as activator. The obtained active hollow carbons are microporous with different pore size distribution. Chemical activation with phosphates produces active carbon material with small surface area but with both mesopores and micropores. X-ray diffraction shows that besides turbostratic structure typical for carbon materials, there are some peaks which indicate some intermediate reaction products when sodium salts were used as activating agent. Based on data from the electrochemical measurements the activity and porosity of the active fibers depend strongly on the oxidizing agent applied.

Chemical reduction of nanocrystalline CeO2

AB  - The reduction of commercial and mechanochemically processed CeO2 powders was studied. Nanostructured CeO2, with the crystallite size of 21 nm and the lattice distortion of 0.37%, was obtained during 60 min of milling in a high-energetic vibratory mill. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method were applied to characterize the milled powders. During the thermal treatment at 1200 and 1400 degrees C in an argon atmosphere the nonstoichiometric CeO2-x oxides with the defect fluorite structure were formed. Compositions of CeO2-x oxides were determined according to its lattice parameter. The results showed that the release of oxygen, as well as the rate of reduction, was more effective in nanocrystalline then in the microcrystalline CeO2, producing at 1200 degrees C Ce-1.80 and CeO1.85 oxides, while at 1400 degrees C were obtained similarly, CeO1.77 and CeO1.78, compositions. AB  - Activated carbon cloth dressing is an appropriate wound healing material due to its biocompatibility and adsorption characteristics. The influence of gamma radiation as a sterilization process on the adsorption and mechanical properties of activated carbon cloth was investigated. The specific surface area, micropore volume, pore size distribution, surface chemistry as well as the breaking load of activated carbon cloth before and after gamma radiation were examined. Characterization by nitrogen adsorption showed that the activated carbon cloth was a microporous material with a high specific surface area and micropores smaller than 1 nm. Gamma radiation decreased the specific surface area and micropore volume but increased the pore width. The sterilization process changed the surface chemistry quantitatively, but not qualitatively. In addition, the breaking load decreased but without any influence considering the further application of this material.

AB  - Platinum supported on high surface area carbon material is one of the most intensively studied catalysts. However, physicochemical characteristics and surface chemistry of carbon influence properties of the support itself as well as of a catalyst. In our studies we deposited platinum on hollow fibers with or without carbon cryogel. Carbon materials were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms measurements, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and scanning electron microscope, Deposition of platinum was performed chemically and electrochemically. The electrochemical deposition was performed on the grinded samples at the same conditions for all substrates with the aim to study the activity of the catalyst. It was noticed that the nature of carbon support affected structure of platinum deposits and thus their activity.

AB  - A qualitative study of the damages on a carbon cloth induced by various shapes of CO2 laser pulses is presented. Three pulse shapes were used: short (100 ns, 84 MW/cm(2)), tailed (similar to 100-ns spike of 70 MW/cm(2), 2-mu s tail), and extralong (45 mu s, 0.5 MW/cm(2)). Apparently, the energy absorbed by the cloth was mainly converted into thermal energy, causing a range of damages, from instantaneous evaporation to cracking and melting, all of which resulted in the cutting of individual fibers in the yarns of the cloth. The two longer types of pulses allowed sufficient time for the stabilization of the affected zone temperature, thus producing melting and a crater-like burning through of the cloth.

Three pulse shapes were used: short (100 ns, 84 MW/cm(2)), tailed (similar to 100-ns spike of 70 MW/cm(2), 2-mu s tail), and extralong (45 mu s, 0.5 MW/cm(2)). Apparently, the energy absorbed by the cloth was mainly converted into thermal energy, causing a range of damages, from instantaneous evaporation to cracking and melting, all of which resulted in the cutting of individual fibers in the yarns of the cloth. The two longer types of pulses allowed sufficient time for the stabilization of the affected zone temperature, thus producing melting and a crater-like burning through of the cloth.",

Carbon fibrous materials with different textile shapes, during different stages of processing, were exposed to laser radiation. A ruby laser (lambda=694.3 nm) was used to modify the material. The structural changes were examined by scanning electron microscopy and Xray diffraction. It way established that the radiation of this laser induces structural changes leading to a better arrangement of the turbostratic carbon fiber structure.

AB  - A carbon cryogel, synthesized by carbonization of a resorcinol/formaldehyde cryogel and oxidized in nitric acid, was used as catalyst Support for Pt nanoparticles. The Pt/C catalyst was prepared by a modified polyol synthesis method in an ethylene glycol (EG) solution. Characterization by nitrogen adsorption showed that the carbon cryogel support and the Pt/C catalyst were mesoporous materials with high specific surface areas (S-BET GT 400 m(2) g(-1)) and large mesoporous Volumes. X-Ray diffraction of the catalyst demonstrated the successful reduction of the Pt precursor to metallic form. TEM Images of the Pt/C catalyst and Pt particle size distribution showed that the mean Pt particle size was about 3.3 nm. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments at various scan rates (from 2 to 200 mV s(-1)) were pet-formed in 0.5 mol dm(-3) HCIO4 solution. The large capacitance of the oxidized carbon cryogel electrode, which arises from a combination of the double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance, associated with the participation of surface redox-type reactions was demonstrated. For the oxidized carbon cryogel, the total specific capacitance determined by I1/C vs. v(0.5) extrapolation method was found to be 386 F g-l. The hydrogen oxidation reaction at the investigated Pt/C catalyst proceeded as an electrochemically reversible, two-electron direct discharge reaction.

Pt/C catalysts were prepared by a modified ethylene glycol method (EG). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the dispersion of the catalyst is very uniform with a mean particle size of about 2.65 nm. Hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) was studied on Pt/C catalyst in 0.5 mol dm(-3) HClO4 acid solution. It has been found that HOR appears as a reversible two-electron direct discharged reaction (Tafel slope for this reaction is approximate to 30mV dec(-1)) and that Pt/C catalyst exhibits a very high catalytic activity. However, the corresponding value of the exchange current density obtained by dividing the exchange current by the active surface area of Pt particles has the same order of magnitude as those for the HOR in acidic solution at single crystal and polycrystalline Pt.

AB  - The interaction of a Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser (pulse duration less than 2 mus) with carbon and activated carbon cloth was investigated. The investigations have shown that carbon cloth had been physically modified by the TEA CO2 laser. The type of modification strongly depends on laser working regime, such as energy density of the laser beam, etc. The morphology transformations induced by interaction with TEA CO2 laser beams resulted in different specific surface area of activated carbon cloth. Also, laser interaction induced minor changes in crystallographic structure parameters.

abstract = "Resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) cryogels were synthesized by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde and freeze-drying was carried out with t-butanol. Carbon cryogels were obtained by pyrolyzing RF cryogels in an inert atmosphere. Characterization by nitrogen adsorption showed that carbon cryogels were micro and mesoporous materials with high surface areas (500 m(2)/g LT S-BET LT 750 m(2)/g). Cyclic voltammetry experiments at various scan rates (2-200 mV s(-1)) have been performed to study the electrical double-layer charging of carbon cryogel electrodes in 0.5 mol dm(-3) HClO4 solution. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to divide further total specific capacitance into mesoporous and microporous specific capacitance by analyzing the linear dependence of the specific capacitance (C) on the reciprocal of the square root of the potential scan rate (v(-1/2)), and linear dependence of the reciprocal specific charge (1/C) on the square root of the potential scan rate (v(1/2)).
