Correlation Between Morphology and Structure of Galvanostatically Electrodeposited Tin Dendrites

AB  - Tin dendrites found wide application in various industries.1 They can be obtained by both non-electrochemical and electrochemical methods of synthesis. In this study, they were produced by a galvanostatic regime of electrolysis from alkaline hydroxide solution at a current density of –3 mA cm–2 , 1.5 times larger than the limiting diffusion current density, with an amount of the electricity of 200 and 400 mC. In the dependence of an amount of the passed electricity, Sn dendrites of various morphology and crystal orientation were obtained: the fern-like dendrites predominantly oriented in (220), (440) crystal planes are obtained with 200 mC and the spear-like and the dendrites with prismatic branches showing the strong (200),(400) preferred orientationwere obtained with 400 mC. The strong correlation between morphology and structure of Sn dendrites is established and it can be explained by analysis of chronopotentiometry response obtained at the given current density and by morphological and structural analyses of Sn dendrites obtained by a potentiostatic regime at cathodic potentials corresponding to values attained after the passed amount of the electricity of 200 and 400 mC. The chronopotentiometry response after spent 200 mC was dominantly in the (–1600 – 1740) mV vs. Ag/AgCl range, and the fern-like dendrites with the strong (220), (440) preferred orientation were obtained in this potential range. After spent 400 mC, the chronopotentiometry response was about –1200 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, and the spear-like and the dendrites with prismatic branches with the strong (200),(400) preferred orientationwere obtained at this cathodic potential.

AB  - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedraloligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films aremade with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybridfilms, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparingto pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for compositewith POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the compositefilms indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcingof the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

Real-Time AFM and Impedance Corrosion Monitoring of Environmentally Friendly Ceria Films on AA7075

AB  - Cerium-based conversion coatings have emerged as promising green alternatives to the harmful chromium-based ones, but the mechanism of corrosive protection still remains a subject of academic and industrial research. This study focuses at small scale phenomena of corrosion inhibition imparted by ceria (CeO2) to AA7075. Ceria nanoparticles were deposited from diluted and concentrated CeO2 sols by immersion. A multi-Analytical approach, combining Atomic Force microscopy (AFM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed. Deposition of ceria films led to deactivation of cathodic sites, i.e. decreased Volta potential difference, resulting in increased corrosion inhibition. In situ AFM real-Time monitoring revealed that during exposure to NaCl electrolyte, the changes in size of deposited ceria aggregates occurred: nanoparticles disintegrated/desorbed and re-deposited at the coating surface. The process was found to be dynamic in nature. Small particles size and inherent reactivity are believed to accelerate this phenomenon. Due to the greater CeO2 reservoir, this phenomenon was more pronounced with a thicker film, imparting longer term protection.
