AB - Plasmon-longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon interaction in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals was investigated by measuring far-infrared reflectivity spectra in the 100-700 cm(-1) spectral range at room temperature. Analysis of the obtained results revealed that the presence of free charge carriers becomes significant with the particle size decrease to nanometer range and increase of lattice defects. The free charge carriers were found to be responsible for a plasmon mode which coupled strongly with two LO phonon modes of ceria. The presence of more pronounced low-frequency Drude tail and the screening of the phonon modes in Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals implied that the Plasmon-LO phonon interaction increased with doping. Factorized and additive dielectric function models were applied to deduce about the coupled and decoupled LO phonon frequencies and the structure of the decoupled plasmon mode in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals. These models were combined with Bruggeman effective medium approximation in order to properly describe the influence of porosity on the infrared reflectivity spectra. With increasing dopant content, the decoupled plasmon mode exhibited redshift and damping decrease implying that doping induced semiconductor-to-metalic state transition took place.

AB - The influence of La-doping in the range of 0.5-6.0 mol% on structural and morphological properties of TiO2 nanopowders synthesized by sol-gel routine has been investigated by XRPD, AFM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as Raman spectroscopy. The XRPD and Raman measurements have revealed the anatase phase as dominant in all nanopowders, with crystallite size decreasing from similar to 15 nm in pure TiO2 to similar to 12 nm in La-doped samples. The BET data suggest that all samples are fully mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 6-8 nm. The specific surface area and the complexity of pore structure are greater in doped samples than in pure TiO2 sample. The spectroscopic ellipsometry has apparently shown that the band gap has been gradually increased with the increase of La content. The STM and STS techniques have been used successfully to evaluate the surface morphology and electronic properties of La-doped nanopowders. All investigated properties have been related to photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of a metoprolol tartrate salt (0.05 mM), and induced by UV-radiation. All doped samples showed increased photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2, among which the 0.65 mol% La-doped sample appeared to be the most efficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. AB - Among potential replacements for chromates, cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) have been identified as leading candidates, showing a good promise as environmentally compliant corrosion inhibitors on Al alloys. In this work, CeCCs were synthesized on M6060 by electrolytic deposition (ELD), a well-suited method for the fabrication of films with controllable properties, at low processing temperature and cost. The CeCCs were deposited at room temperature from Ce(NO3)(3) solution, applying different cathodic potentials (-1.1, -1.4 and -1.6 V vs. SCE) for different deposition times between 5 and 20 min. Structural, morphological and compositional properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Ceria films were nanostructured, exhibiting a cubic fluorite structure. From corrosion perspective, the quality of CeCCs was evaluated in 0.5 M NaCI solution via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear sweep voltammetry. As shown, the coating corrosion quality is the interplay between deposition potential and deposition time. The highest potential led to highly cracked films of poor adherence, even at the shortest deposition time, which disqualified them from any corrosion protection application. The lowest potential (-1.1 V) produced crack-free coatings, but longer times ( GT = 10 min) were needed to provide the protective layer formation. The best corrosion protection offered CeCCs prepared at -1.4 V. The highest R-p (582 k Omega cm(2)) and the smallest CPE (12.6 . 10(-6) s(n) Omega(-1) cm) were obtained at 20 min deposition time. However, from economical point of view, 10 min deposition is a promising choice. These CeCCs also improved pitting corrosion resistance owing to homogeneous microstructure and sufficient thickness. AB - The structural and morphological properties of mesoporous anatase nanopowders, synthesized by sol-gel method, have been modified by varying the duration of calcination, in order to obtain more efficient photocatalyst than Degussa P25 in the degradation of relatively large pollutant molecules ( GT 1 nm in size). According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystallite size was increased from 13 to 17.5 nm with the increase of calcination time from 1 to 7 h. The analysis of nitrogen sorption experimental data revealed that all samples were mesoporous, with a mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 5-9 nm. The corrugated pore structure model was employed to evaluate pore structure tortuosity. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, selective beta(1)-blocker used in a variety of cardiovascular diseases, with molecular size of 0.610 nm x 1.347 nm. The study has demonstrated that samples calcined for 4 and 5 h have displayed higher photocatalytic performance than Degussa P25, whereas the sample calcined for 3 h has shown comparable activity. AB - Nanocrystalline powders of solid solution CeO2-Bi2O3 were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature reaction (SPRT) procedure with composition (Ce1-xBixO2-delta where the x = 0.1-0.5). X-ray diffraction analyses show that for x LT 0.50 a solid solution with fluorite structure is formed. Rietvelds structure refinement method was applied to characterize prepared powders and its microstructure (size strain). The lattice parameters increase according to Vegards rule with increasing of Bi concentration. The average crystallite size is about 2-3 nm. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples at room temperature. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas increase of Bi content provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria. Specific surface area of obtained powders was measured by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The vacancies cause several important changes in CeO2 involving microstrain, electronic structure, magnetic properties, etc. In this article, we focus our attention to the microstructural changes of nanocrystalline CeO2-x annealed at different temperatures in the range 200500 degrees C. Structural and vibrational properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed that the content of oxygen vacancies changed significantly with increasing annealing temperature, which plays an important role in the observed microstructural changes of the annealed samples. We demonstrate that the observed microstrain changes, because of variable defect content, dominate over the crystallite size effect. This finding is opposite to the conclusions made by several other authors. A new mode, classified as a probable surface mode, was observed in the Raman spectra at similar to 480 cm(1), the appearance of which can be explained by the large defective structure and disorder in the ceria lattice. AB - Ultrafine porous cerium dioxide nanopowders were synthesized by relatively new and cost-effective hydrothermal method varying the main synthesis parameters, temperature of calcination and type of basic solution. Characterization of the as-produced powders was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman scattering and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. This study reveals that difference in synthesis parameters has strong influence on the particle size, surface area, and pore size distribution enabling the more precise control of material properties very important for catalytic and nanosensor applications. Detailed information on nanoparticles microstructure and core crystal structure is reported. The Yb3+ ions occupy preferently C-3i sites for low Yb3+ concentrations, while for 20 at.% Yb3+, a random distribution was found. It was shown that the particle/crystallite size and strain as well as Raman modes positions and widths are influenced by Yb3+ concentration. Crystallographic and Raman spectroscopy results indicate that the particles are core/shell structured with cubic crystalline core and monoclinic-like disordered shell. Most probable particles shell/core volume ratio decreased with annealing at 500 degrees C and the shell disappeared when annealed at 1000 degrees C. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this paper nanometric powders of solid solution of the host compound ceria (CeO(2)) with Pr dopant in the lattice were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) synthesis with composition (Ce(0.9)Pr(0.1)O(2-delta)). Powder properties such as specific surface area crystallite and particle size and lattice parameters have been studied. BET, TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples at room temperature. Obtained solid solution exhibits a fluorite-type crystal structure. The average crystallite size is about 3-4 nm. Williamson-Hall plots were used to separate the effect of the size and strain in the nanocrystals. It is noticed the redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F(2g) mode which is explained with nanocrystalline nature of powders. Color characters of solid solution depending on calcinations temperature and their position in the chromaticity diagram were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry (diffuse reflectance). AB - We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and Fe2+(Fe3+) doped CeO2 nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of CeO2 fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 cm(-1), seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the CeO2 intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 cm(-1), 1320 cm(-1) and 1600 cm(-1), which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) cation deficient structure, to 2 omega(LO) IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

abstract = "We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and Fe2+(Fe3+) doped CeO2 nanopowders at room temperature. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.",

AB - Nanopowdered solid solution Ce(1-x)Fe(x)O(2-delta) samples (0 LT = x LT = 0.1) were synthesized by a self-propagating room temperature synthesis (SPRT). XRD and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature were used to study the vibrational properties of these materials as well as the Fe solubility in ceria lattice. Results show that all obtained powders are solid solutions with a fluorite-type crystal structure and all powders were nanometric in size. The average size of Ce(1-x)Fe(x)O(2-delta) particles lies about 5 nm. The results of electrical properties of the sintered samples investigated by an ac impedance spectroscopy are also presented and discussed. It was confirmed that Fe(3+) doped ceria material has a potential as electrolyte for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - This paper deals with Nd-doped ceria solid solutions: Ce(1-x)Nd(x)O(2-delta) with x ranging from 0 to 0.25. Six different powders were synthesized by applying the method based on self-propagating room temperature reaction (SPRT) between metallic nitrates and sodium hydroxide. The method is known to assure very precise stoichiometry of the final product in comparison with a tailored composition. Rietveld refinement was employed to get structural information on the. synthesized powder. An increase of Nd ion concentration increases the unit cell parameters and average bond distances. We have shown that all obtained powders were solid solutions with a fluorite-type crystal structure and all powder particles were of nanometric size (about 3 nm).

AB - A series of Ce1-xBaxO2-y (5 LT = x LT = 0.20) nanometric powders were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature synthesis. XRD and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples. at room temperature. All the samples are solid solutions with fluorite type structure with an average crystallite size about 5 nm. The redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F g mode can be well explained with combined confinement and strain effects because of the nanocrystalline powders nature. The appearance of the additional peaks at similar to 560 cm(-1) and similar to 600 cm(-1), are attributed to extrinsic and intrinsic O2- vacancies in ceria lattice. Raman spectra of temperature treated Ce0.80Ba0.20O2-delta sample revealed the instability of this system.

AB - One of the methods for powder synthesis that is both cost and time effective is the self-propagating room temperature synthesis. We applied this method to synthesize rare earth doped ceria nanopowders. Since they exhibit very high ionic conductivity at intermediate temperatures these compositions are attractive for a new generation of nanostructured ceramics applicable in solid oxide fuel cells as electrolytes. In this paper we paid our attention to the reaction based on methathetical pathway, whereby solid solution nanopowders of rare earth elements with ceria were obtained at room temperature. Compositions of Ce1-xRexO2-delta (Re = Y, Nd) were synthesized with x ranging from 0 to 0.20. The reaction course is discussed and the properties of the obtained powders are presented.
