AB - This paper presents a study and comparison of surface effects induced by picosecond and nanosecond laser modification of a Ti6Al4V alloy surface under different ambient conditions: air and argon- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres. Detailed surface characterization was performed for all experimental conditions. Damage threshold fluences for picosecond and nanosecond laser irradiation in all three ambient conditions were determined. The observed surface features were a resolidified pool of molten material, craters, hydrodynamic effects and parallel periodic surface structures. Laser-induced periodic surface structures are formed by multi-mode-beam nanosecond laser action and picosecond laser action. Crown-like structures at crater rims are specific features for picosecond Nd:YAG laser action in argon-rich ambient conditions. Elemental analysis of the surfaces indicated nitride compound formation only in the nitrogen-rich ambient conditions. The constituents of the formed plasma were also investigated. Exploring the impact of process control parameters on output responses has been undertaken within the context of laser modification under different environmental conditions. Parametric optimization of the nanosecond laser modification was carried out by implementing an advanced method based on Taguchi’s parametric design and multivariate statistical techniques, and optimal settings are proposed for each atmosphere.

AB - In this experimental study, picosecond laser treatment was performed on a nickel-based superalloy Nimonic 263, aiming to investigate the surface effects induced by irradiation in different atmospheric conditions and, concerning changes in surface composition, regarding the possibility for improvement of its functionality. Besides the varying laser parameters, such as a number of pulses and pulse energy, environmental conditions are also varied. All surface modifications were carried out in standard laboratory conditions and a nitrogen- and argon-rich atmosphere. The resulting topography effects depend on the specific laser treatment and could be categorized as increased roughness, crater formation, and formation of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Changes in the chemical surface composition are distinguished as the potential formation of the protective oxides/nitrides on the sample surface. Numerous characterization techniques analyse the resulting effects on the topography and surface parameters. The multi-response parametric optimization of the picosecond laser process was performed using an advanced statistical method based on Taguchi’s robust parameter design. Finally, the optimal parameter conditions for Nimonic 263 modification are suggested.

AB - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multi-pulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 $$\upmu $$J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences—but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences $$({F}_{\mathrm{th}})$$and the incubation factor $$(\zeta )$$were also determined.

AB - Diffuse reflection as a feature of dyed coatings is important characteristic regarding camouflage protection analysis. In our laboratory practice, the need for diffuse reflection analysis of textile materials has appeared, recently. Therefore, astm e903-12 [1] method has been modified in order to be applicable for this type of materials. The measurements of diffuse reflection were conducted, in the military technical institute laboratory for textile, leather and shoes examination in belgrade, serbia, using the uv/vis/nir spectrophotometer uv 3600 from a japanese manufacturer shimadzu with an integrating sphere within wavelength area from 650 nm to 1000 nm. For the purpose of results analyses, uv probe programme package [2] was used. 10 measurements of spectralon (manufactured by labsphere®), which is used as a certified reflectance standard, were performed and obtained standard deviation was 0.07 %. Then control sample, a piece of a standard military cloth of serbian army, which has five color shades (light green, beige green, dark green, brown and black) was tested. Standard deviations were in range from 0.09% for black tone on 650 nm wavelength to 2.0% for light green tone on 1000 nm. The combine uncertainty for the method was ±2.0 %, which coincides with the above mentioned astm standard. In the end, comparative measurements of the same control sample for all five shades were performed in the “vinca” institute for nuclear sciences, department for physical chemistry, university of belgrade on lambda 35 perkin-elmer uv/vis/nir spectrophotometer. Moreover, the z score was calculated as well, and its values ranged from -0.71 to +0.71, which was satisfying regarding interlaboratory measurements rules. Overall results showed that this method is applicable for diffuse reflection measurements of textile materials.

AB - Abstract: In the present paper, ionization energies of LinCln – 1 (n = 3, 4, and 5) clusters were studied by means of the modified Knudsen cell mass spectrometry method, for the first time. The temperature dependence of the intensities of Li3Cl2 +, Li4Cl3 + and Li5Cl4 + ions were measured in the interval 1128–1616, 1126–1435, and 1947–2278 K, respectively. The following ionization energies were obtained: IE(Li3Cl2) = 4.51 ± 0.2 eV, IE(Li4Cl3) = 4.18 ± 0.2 eV, and IE(Li4Cl3) = 5.05 ± 0.2 eV. A good correlation of the experimental results with the theoretical adiabatic ionization energy is recognized. Results are confirmation that these clusters can be classified as “superalkalis.”. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Merenje odnosa stabilnih izotopa hlora (n(37Cl)/n(35Cl)), kao i molske frakcije 36Cl (n(36Cl)/n(Cl)) pruža korisne informacije o poreklu hlorata i perhlorata u okruženju [2, 3]. Pored navedenih tehnika u površinske metode jonizacije spada i masenospektrometrijska metoda laserske desorpcije i jonizacije (LDI).

Merenje odnosa stabilnih izotopa hlora (n(37Cl)/n(35Cl)), kao i molske frakcije 36Cl (n(36Cl)/n(Cl)) pruža korisne informacije o poreklu hlorata i perhlorata u okruženju [2, 3]. AB - In this work, a simple way for study the possibility of formation a vapor cluster species of tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4), using the laser ablation in the absence of a buffer or reactive atmosphere, and without a postablation supersonic expansion on a commercial matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer, is reported. Tetrachloroauric acid is known as precursor for the synthesis of gold nanostructures and the complex salts; therefore it is an important task to discover and quantify the species arising from HAuCl4, in order to understand their role in the gold assisted reactions. Mass spectrum of HAuCl4in a reflector negative-ion mode contains the hydrated mono- and dinuclear gold clusters in the m/z range 286–436, and gold chloride clusters in the m/z range 447–795. In the first part of spectrum, m/z range 286–436, the hydrated gold cluster species of type Aun−(H2O)m(n = 1–2; m = 1, 2, 5, 7, 8) and [Aun(OH)k]−(H2O)m(n = 1–2; k = 1–2; m = 1, 4–8) were found. Besides that, there are gold chloride clusters with general formula [AuHr(HCl)2]−(H2O)m(m = 1–5; 8–9; r = 0–2) in this part of spectrum. In the second part of spectrum, the m/z range 447–795, only gold chloride clusters were obtained. Their general formulae can be written as [AuClt(HCl)v]−(H2O)m(t = 1–4; v = 5–8; m = 2–4, 6–8) and [Aun(HCl)v]−(H2O)m(n = 1–2, v = 4–5, m = 1–2, 5, 7). The analysis of concentration effects on the LDI mass spectra of gold clusters reveals that the relative intensities of signals for the mono- and dinuclear Au clusters increase with decreasing the concentration of water HAuCl4solutions.

AB - This paper presents optimization of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer (MS) instrumental parameters for the analysis of chloro(2,2 , 2 -terpyridine) palladium(II) chloride dihydrate complex applying design of experiments methodology (DoE). This complex is of interest for potential use in the cancer therapy. DoE methodology was proved to succeed in optimization of many complex analytical problems. However, it has been poorly used for MALDI-TOF-MS optimization up to now. The theoretical mathematical relationships which explain the influence of important experimental factors (laser energy, grid voltage and number of laser shots) on the selected responses (signal to noise - S/N ratio and the resolution - R of the leading peak) is established. The optimal instrumental settings providing maximal S/N and R are identified and experimentally verified.

AB - In this work it has been shown that both the laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) and the matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) are the simple and quick methods for determination of relative natural isotopic distribution of lead. The analysis of metal salts with these approaches does not require any time-consuming preparation of samples: a single run can take only a minute, and numerous information can be obtained. Results obtained in this work show that chosen matrix has no negative effect on quantitative determination of lead isotopes and support once more the applicability of MALDI TOF MS for lead isotope distribution determination in the sample and accurate data are obtained. Additionally, the generation of PbnOn and PbnOn-1 (n: 2-6) clusters have been successfully achieved in the positive mode, using the both LDI and MALDI methods. All stoichiometries were confirmed using isotopic pattern modelling.

The Au2Cl5-and Au2Cl7-clusters are detected for the first time in this work. This research showed that LDI MS, thanks to its easy experimental procedure, a soft ionization technique which may be a useful characterization tool in the chemistry of heterogeneous gold clusters.
