AB  - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multi-pulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 $$\upmu $$J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences—but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences $$({F}_{\mathrm{th}})$$and the incubation factor $$(\zeta )$$were also determined.

AB  - Among numerous existing and developing techniques for the detection of air pollution, laser-based optical methods (LBM) are possibly the most promising ones. Unique sensing capabilities of LBM include high speed of analysis, high selectivity, sensitivity and accuracy, low detection limits, and remote detection. This paper gives a brief review of several laser-based systems for optical sensing of gas-phase chemical agents: laser intra-cavity, photoacoustic and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and remote sensing based on differential absorption. For each method, a brief description of the principles of operation is given, and its analytical capabilities are outlined.

Femtosecond laser processing of NiPd single and 5x(Ni/Pd) multilayer thin films

AB  - Modification of single and complex nickel-palladium samples by laser processing in the femtosecond time domain was studied. The samples were processed by focused Ti:Sapphire laser beam (Clark CPA-2101) with 775 nm laser wavelength, 2 kHz repetition rate, 200 fs pulse duration. The laser-induced morphological modifications have shown dependence on the applied fluences and number of laser pulses. The formed surface nanostructures on the single NiPd/Si and multilayer 5x(Ni/Pd)/Si systems are compared with individual Ni and Pd thin films. The results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of parallel periodic surface structures, appearance of hydrodynamic features and ablation of surface material. At low number of pulses (less than 10 pulses) and low pulse energies range (not over 1.7 mu J), the two types of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) can be observed: low and high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL and LSFL). For all samples, the measured LSFL periods were 720 nm for the ripples created solely on thin film surfaces during the single pulse action. In the case of the multi-pulse irradiation, the periodicities of created LSFLs on the all investigated thin films have shown tendency to reduction with increasing of pulse energies. Kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolysis on a Ni cathode in the presence of Ni-Co-Mo based ionic activators

AB  - This paper presents investigations on the influence of in-situ ionic activation using combination of three D-metals: Ni, Co and Moon the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism and kinetics. Polarization measurements were performed to obtain kinetic parameters for the HER and the results are presented to show Tafel slopes, exchange current densities and apparent energy of activation. The values of the kinetic parameters confirm the existence of two Tafel slopes, in the case of NiCoMo based ionic activators (i.a.) in the investigated temperature range, with very high values of the exchange current density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were employed to further investigate the origin of the obtained electrocatalytic effect on the HER. The measurements were performed at several overpotentials and temperatures. It was found that co-deposition of Ni, Co and Mo species on the Ni cathode results in a large number of active sites for hydrogen adsorption, and a synergetic effect giving electronic structure suitable for the HER, are the main factors contributing to the enhanced HER kinetics. It was shown that EIS measurements had a crucial role in determining the HER mechanism, especially with the complex in-situ activation of the alkaline electrolysis. Laser-induced surface oxidation of (Ni/Ti)/Si system with picosecond laser pulses

AB  - The surface oxidation of Ni/Ti bilayer, deposited on silicon substrate, affected by picosecond Nd: YAG laser radiation has been investigated. Fluence close to the target ablation threshold and multi-pulse laser irradiation regime were applied. Changes in the chemical composition of the formed surface oxide layer were studied by Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Morphological features analysis, at the oxide surface layer, was monitored, too. Laser modification as-deposited (Ni/Ti)/Si sample with 10 pulses induces a progressed interaction between Ni and Ti layers with the initial surface oxidation and formation of NiTi alloy phase. Progressed intermixing of components was achieved for the irradiation with 50 and more pulses, when all components were quite uniformly distributed to a depth of about 80 nm. An oxide layer was formed at the surface, with the specific combination of the oxide phases depending on the number of accumulated pulses. Changes in the morphological characteristics are reflected in the increase of the mean surface roughness and the generation of a certain number of cavities. abstract = "The surface oxidation of Ni/Ti bilayer, deposited on silicon substrate, affected by picosecond Nd: YAG laser radiation has been investigated. Fluence close to the target ablation threshold and multi-pulse laser irradiation regime were applied. Changes in the chemical composition of the formed surface oxide layer were studied by Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Morphological features analysis, at the oxide surface layer, was monitored, too. Laser modification as-deposited (Ni/Ti)/Si sample with 10 pulses induces a progressed interaction between Ni and Ti layers with the initial surface oxidation and formation of NiTi alloy phase. Progressed intermixing of components was achieved for the irradiation with 50 and more pulses, when all components were quite uniformly distributed to a depth of about 80 nm. An oxide layer was formed at the surface, with the specific combination of the oxide phases depending on the number of accumulated pulses. Changes in the morphological characteristics are reflected in the increase of the mean surface roughness and the generation of a certain number of cavities. AB  - In this manuscript we have presented the results of the use of ternary ionic activator in the alkaline water electrolysis. Novel Ni-Co-Mo based ionic activator was added in-situ to standard electrolyte. Energy consumption of the alkaline electrolyzer was determined at different current densities and elevated temperatures. Energy saving was higher at higher temperatures and higher operating current densities. Results showed that the reduction in energy consumption using Ni-Co-Mo based ionic activator was about 17%, compared to standard 6 M KOH. SEM morphology investigation proved the deposition of nickel, cobalt and molybdenum species on the cathode, greatly increasing the active surface area. UV/VIS spectroscopy was used to monitor changes in the electrolyte composition during the electrolytic process, and results show the decrease in the ionic activator concentration in the 6 M KOH. Our experiments point out a strong possibility of the usage of these ternary ionic activators in industrial alkaline electrolyzers. Copyright (C) 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. AB  - The main effects of the interaction of UV emitting KrCl (at 222 nm) and XeCl (at 308 nm) excimer lasers with titanium alloy Ti6Al4V are presented. AB  - Laser-induced alloying effects on the composition and structure of different Ni/Ti multilayer structures were studied. Thin films composed of one, five, and ten (Ni/Ti) bilayers were deposited by DC ion sputtering on (1 0 0) Si wafers. Laser irradiations were performed by 150 ps pulses of a Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. The samples were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At a laser fluence of 0.9 J cm(-2), interaction between Ni and Ti layers was initiated, and NiTi alloy formed in 5- and 10-bilayered samples. Progressed alloying was achieved at a laser fluence of 1.2 J cm(-2). The alloy was formed mostly within the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the sample. Surface segregation of titanium was followed by formation of a 25 nm thin TiO2 film on the surface of the multilayered structures. In addition, parallel periodic surface structures on the surfaces of the 5- and 10-bilayered samples were clearly recorded. Their period in the case of the 5-bilayered system (0.77 mu m) agrees very well with the predictions of the common theory, whereas, in the case of the 10-bilayered system, two periods of such structures are observed (1.43 mu m and 0.4 mu m), and none of them coincides with the prediction. AB  - Interaction of a Nd:YAG laser, operating at 1064 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 150 ps, with Ni/Ti multilayer thin films was studied. Nanocomposite structure of five (Ni/Ti) bilayers deposited by DC ion sputtering on Si(100) wafers to a total thickness of ca. 180 nm was treated with a laser pulse energy of about 55 mJ without focusing (fluence 1 J cm(-2)), Multi-pulse laser irradiation was done at an incidence angle of 22 degrees in air. The composition and surface morphology were monitored by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The main part of the absorbed laser energy was rapidly transformed into heat, producing intensive modifications of composition and morphology on the target surface. Besides surface oxidation, the results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of a regularly rippled surface topography and microcracking. Depth profile AES analysis revealed that laser annealing induced intermixing between the components of individual Ni and Ti layers with indications of possible formation of NiTi intermetallic compounds. An interesting finding is the surface segregation of Ti, although the top layer was Ni, prior to laser irradiation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - RATIONALE: Theoretical calculations have shown that the first ionization energy of clusters of the type LinCl (n GT = 2), with more than eight valent electrons, is lower than that of alkali metal atoms; hence they are named superalkali. Superalkali clusters can mimic the chemical behavior of alkali metals and may be used as building blocks of new cluster-assembled materials. There is currently no reliable experimental proof of this kind of clusters and such proof is required. METHODS: The LinCl (n = 2-6) clusters were produced by a thermal ionization source of modified design, and mass selected by a magnetic-sector mass spectrometer. The modification pertains to the replacement of the side filaments by a cylinder in the triple-filament thermal ionization source. The sample, which is LiCl salt, was pressed into a ring and placed on the inner wall of the cylinder. RESULTS: It was observed that the ions of clusters with an even number of lithium atoms (Li2Cl+, Li4Cl+, Li6Cl+) are more stable than the odd-numbered ones (Li5Cl+, Li3Cl+). The ionization energies were determined to be 3.98 +/- 0.25 eV for Li2Cl, 4.10 +/- 0.25 eV for Li3Cl, 3.90 +/- 0.25 eV for Li4Cl, 4.01 +/- 0.25 eV for Li5Cl, and 4.09 +/- 0.25 eV for Li6Cl. The presence of a halogen atom reduces the ionization energy of the metal clusters. CONCLUSIONS: The thermal ionization source of modified design presents a suitable simple way to obtaining and measuring the ionization energies of very small lithium monochloride clusters. AB  - We studied surface modification of a double layer protective coating on steel induced by single fs laser pulse irradiation in ambient air. The outer alumina (Al2O3) layer, which protects against aggressive environments, was 1.7 mu m thick and the titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) layer in contact with the steel surface had a thickness of 1.9 mu m. The pulses (lambda=775 nm, tau=200 fs) were generated by a Ti:sapphire laser source. The pulse energy was varied from 0.32 mu J to 50 mu J, corresponding to an incident laser fluence of 0.11 J cm(-2) to 16.47 J cm(-2). The surface damage threshold was found to be 0.20 J cm(-2) and the alumina layer removal was initiated at 0.56 J cm(-2). This selective ablation of alumina was possible in a wide range of fluences, up to the maximum applied, without ablating the TiAlN layer beneath. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - The manuscript presents a report on the improved efficiency of alkaline electrolytic production of hydrogen by in situ adding directly into the electrolyte during the electrolytic process, cobalt and chrome based ionic activators. During electrolysis process the ionic activators deposit on the surface of the Ni cathode electrode and form an active, porous structure of high surface area. This simple process of adding in situ activating compounds directly into electrolyser is reducing the energy requirements per mass unit of hydrogen produced for about 15%, compared to non-activated system, for a number of current densities in a wide temperature range. Energy saving is higher at higher temperatures and on higher current densities. Structural and morphological characteristic of deposit formed on the cathode during the electrolytic process after in situ addition of activators, reveal interesting electrode surface pattern with highly developed surface area and uniform distribution of the pores. AB  - The electronic structure and properties of dipotassiummonohalides are important for understanding the unique physical and chemical behavior of MnX systems. In the present study, K2X (here X=F, Cl, Br, I) clusters were generated in the vapor over salts of the corresponding potassium halide, using a magnetic sector thermal ionization mass spectrometer. The ionization energies obtained for K2F, K2Cl, K2Br, and K2I molecules were 3.82 +/- 0.1eV, 3.68 +/- 0.1eV, 3.95 +/- 0.1eV, and 3.92 +/- 0.1, respectively. These experimental values of ionization energies for K2X (X=F, Br, and I) are presented for the first time. The ionization energy of K2Cl determined by thermal ionization corresponds to previous results obtained by photoionization mass spectrometry, and it agrees with the theoretical ionization energy calculated by the ab initio method. The presently obtained results support previous theoretical predictions that the excess electron in dipotassiummonohalide clusters is delocalized over two potassium atoms, which is characteristic for F-center clusters. AB  - Interaction of pulsed transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO(2)-laser radiation at 10.6 mu m with nanoporous activated carbon cloth was investigated. Activated carbon cloth of different adsorption characteristics was used. Activated carbon cloth modifications were initiated by laser pulse intensities from 0.5 to 28 MW/cm(2), depending on the cloth adsorption characteristics. CO(2) laser radiation was effectively absorbed by the used activated carbon cloth and largely converted into thermal energy. The type of modification depended on laser power density, number of pulses, but mostly on material characteristics such as specific surface area. The higher the surface area of activated carbon cloth, the higher the damage threshold.

AB  - A target of multilayered TiAlN/TiN coating deposited on steel was irradiated by 200 fs pulses of a Ti:Sapphire laser, operating at 775 nm. Laser fluences of 1.16 J cm(-2) to 116 J cm(-2) produced a range of modifications, from well defined parallel surface structures on the coating, to deep craters in the substrate. Parameters for coating ablation were determined in terms of laser fluence and pulse count. A single-pulse damage threshold was found to be 0.66 J cm(-2) and the damage incubation factor 0.642. At lower laser fluences formation of laser induced parallel surface structures was evident, beginning from the first pulse, with a periodicity of about 580 nm. These structures remained and were pronounced at the rim of the damage spot even when the coating was completely ablated in the centre. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Surface modification of titanium based implant Ti6Al4V induced by an Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 266 nm, with pulses of 40 ps, is presented. It is shown that the laser beam at fluences 0.96J cm(-2) and 0.29J cm(-2) significantly modifies the alloy surface. The damage threshold is estimated at 0.12 J cm(-2). The irradiations at 0.96J cm-2 were accompanied by the occurrence of plasma. The characteristics of the damage are: (a) smoothed center of the damage area, (b) 20 nm cracks, (c) 200 nm parallel periodic surface structures (PSS). The periodicity of the PSS corresponds to the laser wavelength. Such modifications of the Ti6Al4V implant surface are applicable to medical practice. Surface morphology of the implant was monitored by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyzer. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. AB  - Picosecond (40 ps) pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation of a WTi thin film on silicon with a wavelength of 532 nm and a fluence 2.1 J/cm(2) was performed in air. This led to significant changes of the chemical composition and morphology on the surface of the WTi thin film. The results show an increase in surface roughness, due to formation of conical structures, about 50 nm wide in the base, and a very thin oxide layer composed of WO(3) and TiO(2), with a dominant TiO(2) phase at the top, within the depth of about 20 nm. The thickness of the oxide layer was dependent on the number of laser pulses. The samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Micro- and nanosecond laser TiN coating/steel modification: Morphology studies

AB  - Morphology effects induced during interaction of mu s- (Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO(2) laser) or ns- (HF laser) pulses with titanium nitride (TiN) coating, deposited on austenitic stainless steel AISI 316, were studied. Experiments were carried out in regime of focused laser beam in air at atmospheric pressure. The used laser fluences were found to be sufficient for inducing intensive surface modifications of the target. The energy absorbed from the CO(2) as well as HF laser beam is mainly converted into thermal energy, causing different effects like ablation, appearance of hydrodynamic features, etc. Morphology characteristics obtained during ns-pulses irradiation (HF laser) were different to those initiated by mu s-pulses (TEA CO(2) laser). The changes on the target surface in form of massive resolidifed droplets and crown-like structures were observed only for ns- (HF laser) pulses. It was found that these effects are a consequence of higher temperature and better coupling of the HF laser radiation with the target. Recent investigations of ps-Nd:YAG laser interaction with the same TiN coating showed that morphology picture is quite different including the reduction of thermal effect.

AB  - Interaction of pulsed femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser (160 fs), operating at high repetition rate (75 MHz) at 800 nm, with nickel-based superalloy Inconel 600 and tungsten-titanium (WTi) target was studied. The WTi target was in form of thin film deposited on silicon substrate. Low laser fluence of maximum 50 mJ/cm(2) had modified the target surface during irradiation/exposure time of seconds or minutes. The radiation absorbed from the laser beam generates at the surface a series of effects, such as direct material vaporization, formation of clusters, etc. Morphological features of the targets can be summarized as: (a) intensive removal of material and crater appearance; (b) creation of nanostructures; (c) microcracking, etc. Ablation of Inconel 600 surface is effective, resulting in formation of holes with small diameter ( LT = 10 mu m) and relatively large depth ( LT = 50 mu m). In case of WTi target/thin film, the surrounding rim is not so expressed, and crater depths are lower. It can be concluded that the average laser power of the order of watts, pulse energies of the order of nanojoules and high repetition rates (MHz range) can successfully modify metallic materials.

AB  - Interaction of a Nd:YAG laser, operating at wavelengths of 1064 nm (23.6 J cm(-2) fluence) or 532 nm (25.9 J cm(-2) fluence), and pulse duration of 40 ps, with a titanium-based medical implant Ti6A14V alloy was studied. Surface at laser wavelengths 1064 nm and 532 rim, damage thresholds were estimated to be 0.9 J cm(-2) and 0.25 J cm(-2) respectively. At both laser wavelengths, the energy absorbed was mostly converted into thermal energy, forming craters, albeit about 50 times deeper at 1064 run than at 532 run. Periodic surface structures (PSS) were also formed with both laser wavelengths, concentric, and radial at micrometer scale (3 mu m to 15 mu m period), parallel at nanometer scale (800 nm period with the 1064 nm laser, 400 nm with The 532 nm laser). In the case of the 532 nm laser, the concentric Structures enlarge their period with accumulating laser pulse count. These features can help roughening of the implant surface and improve bio-compatibility.

AB  - Although there are tendencies to develop a single common index which would describe an overall air quality status within an area, constructed from a choice of measurements of individual pollutants, indices describing individual pollutants themselves have several potentials which can be used in ways which are not possible with pollutant concentrations. On the case of Belgrade, Serbia, we investigated possibilities of using such indices for comparisons between pollutants, characterization of monitoring sites, and extending their use to include elements of population exposure. A methodology of adjusting the results obtained at monitoring stations located in severe pollution conditions, like street canyons, is proposed and used.
