AB - Recognized as a significant health hazard, radon (Rn) has been given increasing attention for years. Surveys of different kinds have been performed in many countries to assess the intensity and the geographical extent of possible Rn problems. Common surveys cover mainly dwellings, the indoor place with highest occupancy, and schools, where people spend a large fraction of their lifetime and which can also be considered exemplary for Rn exposure at workplaces; it has however been observed that relating them is difficult. It was unclear whether residential Rn at a location, or in a region, can be predicted by Rn at a school of that location, or vice versa. To current knowledge, no general rule seems applicable, as few models to describe the relationship between Rn in dwellings and in schools have been developed. In Southern Serbia, a Rn survey in a predominantly rural region was based on measurements in primary schools. The question arose whether or to which degree the results can be considered as indicative or even representative for residential Rn concentrations. To answer the question an additional survey of indoor Rn concentrations in dwellings was initiated, designed and performed in Sokobanja district in 2010-2012 in a manner to be able to detect a relationship if it exists. In the study region, 108 dwellings in 12 villages and towns were selected, with one primary school each. In this paper, we investigate how a relation between Rn in schools and dwellings could be identified and quantified, by developing a model and using experimental data from both the above main and additional surveys. The key criterion is the hypothesis that the relation dwellings schools, if it exists, is stronger for dwellings closer to a school than for those dwellings further away. We propose methods to test the hypothesis. As result, the hypothesis is corroborated at 95% significance level. More specifically, on town level (typical size about 1 km), the Rn concentration ratio dwelling/school is about 0.8 (geometrical mean), with geometrical standard deviation (GSD) about 1.9. For dwelling and school hypothetically in the same location, the ratio is estimated about 0.7 with GSD about 1.5. We think that the methodology can be applied to structurally similar problems. The results could be used to create conditional maps of Rn concentration in dwellings, i.e., for example a map of probabilities that indoor Rn concentrations in dwellings exceed 100 Bq/m(3), as function of Rn concentration in the local school. AB - A method for approximate analytical solution of transport equation for particles in plane geometry is developed by solving Fredholm integral equations. Kernels of these equations are the Greens functions for infinite media treated approximately. Analytical approximation of Greens function is based on decomposition of the functions into terms that are exactly analytically solved and those which are approximately obtained by usual low order DPN approximation. Transport of particles in half-space is treated, and reflection coefficient is determined in the form of an analytical function. Comparison with the exact numerical solution and other approximate methods justified the proposed analytical technique.

AB - In order to address concern about radon exhalation in building material, radon exhalation rate was determined for different granites available on Serbian market. Radon exhalation rate, along with mass exhalation rate and effective radium content were determined by closed chamber method and active continuous radon measurement technique. For this research, special chambers were made and tested for back diffusion and leakage, and the radon concentrations measured were included in the calculation of radon exhalation. The radon exhalation rate ranged from 0.161 Bq/m(2)h to 0.576 Bq/m(2)h, the mass exhalation rate from 0.167 Bq/kgh to 0.678 Bq/kgh, while the effective radium content was found to be from 12.37 Bq/kg to 50.23 Bq/kg. The results indicate that the granites used in Serbia have a low level of radon exhalation.

AB - Between 2008 and 2011 a survey of radon (Rn-222) was performed in schools of several districts of Southern Serbia. Some results have been published previously (Zunic et al., 2010; Carpentieri et al., 2011; Zunic et al., 2013). This article concentrates on the geographical distribution of the measured Rn concentrations. Applying geostatistical methods we generate school radon maps of expected concentrations and of estimated probabilities that a concentration threshold is exceeded. The resulting maps show a clearly structured spatial pattern which appears related to the geological background. In particular in areas with vulcanite and granitoid rocks, elevated radon (Rn) concentrations can be expected. The school radon map can therefore be considered as proxy to a map of the geogenic radon potential, and allows identification of radon-prone areas, i.e. areas in which higher Rn radon concentrations can be expected for natural reasons. It must be stressed that the radon hazard, or potential risk, estimated this way, has to be distinguished from the actual radon risk, which is a function of exposure. This in turn may require (depending on the target variable which is supposed to measure risk) considering demographic and sociological reality, i.e. population density, distribution of building styles and living habits. AB - In this paper, the reflection of low-energy light ions from solids is considered within an analytic transport theory. The anisotropy of the collision integral of the ion transport equation is taken into account by means of an appropriate polynomial approximation of the third order in the angular variable. The Laplace transformed transport equation over the path length is treated by the double Legendre polynomial approximation and solved in the lowest order. For power potentials V(R) proportional to R(-1/m), the universal path length and energy distributions, as well as the particle and energy reflection coefficients, are obtained in the form of series expansions. For the special case of the inverse-square law (m = 1/2), reflection functions are derived in a closed analytic form. These results, based on the anisotropic approximation of the collision integral compared with computer simulations and experimental data, appear to be superior to previous theoretical results. AB - The particle reflection coefficient of light keV ions backscattered from heavy solids as a function of the ion incidence angle has been determined by a suitable interpolation formula. The formula has two fitting parameters which are obtained by using results from two limiting analytic approaches: by the single collision model - in case of nearly perpendicular incidence; and by the small-angle multiple scattering theory - in case of glancing angles of incidence. The obtained interpolation formula is a universal function of the scaled transport cross section and the angle of incidence. Comparison of our calculations with Monte Carlo simulation data and the experimental results of other authors gives good agreement for particle reflection coefficient. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. AB - This paper deals with the analysis of natural radionuclide content in 23 water samples collected in the vicinity of the Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant, Serbia. All samples were analyzed for (226)Ra and uranium isotopes ((238)U, (234)U) activity using radiochemical methods and alpha spectrometry. Obtained results show that the activity concentrations for uranium and radium in the water around the thermal power plant are low when compared to those from areas across Serbia with their enhanced natural uranium and radium content. No important radiological hazard related to uranium and radium activity stored in heap was found.

AB - The possibility of expressing the total particle and energy reflection coefficients of low-energy photons in the form of universal functions valid for different shielding materials is investigated in this paper. The analysis is based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations of photon reflection by using MCNP, FOTELP, and PENELOPE codes. The normal incidence of the narrow monoenergetic photon beam of the unit intensity and of initial energies from 20 keV up to 100 keV is considered, and particle and energy reflection coefficients from the plane homogenous targets of water, aluminum, and iron are determined and compared. The representations of albedo coefficients on the initial photon energy, on the probability of large-angle photon scattering, and on the mean number of photon scatterings are examined. It is found out that only the rescaled albedo coefficients dependent on the mean number of photon scatterings have the form of universal functions and these functions are determined by applying the least square method.

AB - A systematic indoor radon survey in elementary schools of Serbia is underway since 2008. Its current first phase covers all elementary schools in predominantly rural communities of Southern Serbia. The design of the survey, its implementation and the current state of its realization is shortly described. Part of this paper is devoted to discussion of the question if this survey could produce results representative also of the radon concentration in dwellings and of radon exposure of the general population, discussing some statistical aspects of representativity which arose during the work, namely, if the implementation leads to an unbiased estimate of the targeted quantities.

AB - Indoor radon retrospective concentrations were obtained and compared using two radon measurement methods. Both methods rely on the measurement of the long-lived radon progeny (210)Pb, collected either on the surfaces (surface trap technique), most frequently glass, or in a volume trap, usually sponge from furniture (volume trap technique). These techniques have been used to retrospectively estimate radon gas concentrations that have existed in dwellings in the past. The work presented here compares the results provided by the surface trap technique devised at the University College of Dublin, Ireland, and the volume trap technique devised at the Scientific Research Center, Mol, Belgium. The field campaign was carried out by the research team of the ECE Laboratory of the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences at the spa of Niska Banja, identified as a region of Serbia with a high indoor radon and ground water radium and radon content.

AB - The particle reflection coefficient of fight keV ions backscattered from heavy targets has been determined by two different analytical approaches: by the single collision model in the case of nearly perpendicular incidence and by the small-angle multiple scattering theory in the case of glancing angles of incidence. The obtained analytical formulae are approximately universal functions of the scaled transport cross-section describing the reflection of all light ions from heavy targets. Going from perpendicular to grazing incidence, the transition from pure single to pure multiple scattering type of reflection is observed. For larger values of the scaling parameter the results of these theories cover the whole region of ion incident angles and the present estimates of the particle reflection coefficient are in good agreement with the results obtained from the empirical formula of Tabata et al.

AB - The linear Boltzmann transport equation for diffusion and slowing down of low-energy light ions in solids is Laplace transformed in relative path-length and solved by applying the DP0 technique. The ion-target atom interaction potential is assumed to have a form of the inverse-square law and furthermore, the collision integral of the transport equation is replaced by the P-3 approximation in angular variable. The approximative Laplace transformed solution for the reflection function is found and inverted leading to the distribution of backscattered particles in the relative path-length. Analytic expression for the particle reflection coefficient was derived and our result is compared with computer simulation data.

AB - Introduction

In X-ray diagnostics, a quantitative assessment of medical staff exposure is essential for radiation protection measures. A good knowledge of the space-energy distribution of scattered radiation around a patient is a necessary condition for this evaluation. Starting from the Compton single scattering model, the expressions for the space-energy distribution of scattered radiation have been derived and the ANGIO program developed (Marković, 1993). The calculated values are compared with detailed dosimetric measurements of the scattered radiation field around a patient (i.e., the water phantom) and with the results of Monte Carlo simulation.

AB - Light ion reflection from solids in the keV energy region has been studied within the single collision model. Particle and energy reflection coefficients as functions of the scaled transport cross section have been calculated numerically by utilizing the exact scattering function for the Kr-C potential and analytically with an effective power approximation for the same potential. The obtained analytical formulae approximate very accurately to the numerical results. Comparison of the calculated reflection coefficients with the experimental data and computer simulations for different light ion-heavy target combinations shows that the scaled transport cross section remains a convenient scaling parameter in the single collision domain, as adopted previously in multiple collision theory. AB - The linear Boltzmann transport equation for diffusion and slowing down of low-energy light ions in solids is Laplace-transformed in relative path-length and solved by applying the DP0 technique. The ion-target atom interaction potential is assumed to have a form of the inverse-square law and furthermore, the collision integral of the transport equation is replaced by the P-3 approximation in angular variable. The approximative Laplace-transformed solution for the reflection function is found and inverted leading to the distribution of backscattered particles in the relative pathlength. Analytic expressions for the particle and energy reflection coefficients were derived and our results are compared with a large number of computer simulation data. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. AB - The energy dependent albedo problem of low-energy light ions from heavy targets is considered in a multiple-collision model. The ion transport equation is treated with the assumptions that (i) the distribution function is almost isotropic and (ii) the transport cross section depends only on initial ion energy. The transport equation is Laplace transformed in relative path length and solved by applying the DP0 flux approximation in angle, Reflected energy spectra, particle and energy reflection coefficients are analytically derived. A comparison of DP0 results with age theory, computer simulation data and experimental results is made.

AB - Reflection of light ions from solids have been calculated in the low-energy region where large-angle multiple collisions dominate. Backscattering parameters are obtained as a solution of the Boltzmann equation in the transport approximation. The Laplace transformed equation, which has the form of a one-group transport equation for isotropic scattering, has been solved by using an accurate analytical approximation of Chandrasekhars H-function. Universal curves as well as analytical results are presented for reflected energy spectra integrated over all ejection angles, particle and energy reflection coefficients, and total angular distribution of backscattered ions. Calculations have been done for different angles of incidence. For normal ion incidence and primary energies higher than 100 eV, the agreement between analytical theory and computer simulation data is satisfactory.
