AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have exceptional physical-chemical properties that make them suitable for a wide range of uses, such as the photocatalytic removal of organic contaminants from water. Here, we provide a one-step, ecologically friendly, and economical method for creating iron/nitrogen co-doped (Fe/N-CQD) and nitrogen-doped (N-CQD) quantum dot nanomaterials. The characteristics of the developed nanomaterials were investigated with regard to how surface chemistry impacts their capacity for adsorption and photoactivity in a case study of a specific water pollutant reduction. The influence of the two irradiation sources-operating in the UV and visible ranges-on the photoactivity of materials was highlighted. Finally, their eco-friendliness was examined on four different human tumor cell lines.

AB - In this study, eco-friendly microwave-assisted esterification reactions of chenodeoxycholic acid with medium-chain diols (1,2-ethanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,8-octanediol, and 1,10-decanediol) or tetraethylene glycol were accomplished. The synthesized bile acid esters were obtained with high yields (up to 81 %) and purity in a short reaction time (15 min). It is shown that the microwave technique is a suitable method for the preparation of chenodeoxycholic acid esters. In order to obtain de-tailed insight into the lipophilic behavior of the studied chenodeoxycholic acid esters, a comparative study of chromatographic behavior and lipophilicity was performed. Also, the present study deals with the estimation of pH - logD profiles in order to get an overview of the changes in lipophilicity related to the pH value changes. The obtained results indicate that studied compounds have logD values in the range acceptable for potential drug candidates. Chromatographic lipophilicity of synthesized chenodeox-ycholic acid esters successfully correlate with in silico lipophilicity descriptors.

AB - The area of radiation protection has gained significant relevance due to the fast advancement of radiation technology and its utilization in scientific research. In order to meet the low doses of nuclear radiation, such as gamma (γ)-rays, development of great fineness, stable, and reliable sensors are required. The heterocyclic compounds known as metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) won considerable research interest owing to their exceptional thermal, chemical and photo-stability, and long wavelength absorption compatible with biological window, spreading their potential applications in technology and medicine. As a result, finding the ideal method for creating such molecules is always in the spotlight. In this work, we designed a novel and efficient microwave-assisted synthetic method for preparation of innovative sensor materials base on MPcs (M = Zn, Mn or Fe). A zinc phthalocyanine has been evaluated as model compound in preparing ZnPc/PVA composites as a new, effective chemical-based dosimeter for low-dose measurement of γrays within the dose range from 1-25 kGy. A microwave-enhanced synthetic approach has been evaluated as an impressive chemical-based dosimeter designer. A modest decrease in absorbance intensity, followed by color bleaching in the dose range of 1-25 kGy, enabled the preparation of ZnPc/PVA composites as fine, glossy surface films with impressive application in gamma-ray dosimetry

AB - In this study, zinc phthalocyanine was evaluated as a possible chemical dosimeter for gamma rays at low-medium dose ranges in solution form and PVA film. The zinc phthalocyanine was successfully synthesized with a high yield under microwave irradiation at 200 °C. The calibration curves of absorbance versus dose of gamma irradiation show excellent linearity over a wider dose range (1 - 25kGy). After being irradiated, the samples' color changed from blue to yellow.

AB - The modern age science is still searching for an effective photocatalytic material for the treatment of colored discharges from different industries which cause severe environmental issues. The excellent properties of nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQD) enable their successful application as photocatalytic material in organic dye removal triggered under light absorption. With this in mind we first present a successfully performed microwave-assisted synthesis method, a green, simple and economically affordable method for N-CQD synthesis with high nitrogen percentage incorporated in the form of pyrrolic, pyridinic/NH2 and graphitic/NH3+ groups. The pro-oxidant and antioxidant features of the synthesized N-CQD were further presented, with high removal efficiency of synthesized N-CQD towards the methylene blue (MB) organic dye, as one of the leading water pollutants with a major risk to aquatic and human life.

AB - Removal of heavy metals is important because of their toxic effects on living organisms and unwanted anthropogenic effects. Biochar is suitable as an adsorbent of heavy metals due to its advantages such as various sources of biomass, a large number of microporous channels and surface functional groups, as well as due to its economic viability. There is no data about the plum pomace biochar usage as adsorbent for lead removal. In this study, the plum pomace biochar modified with gamma irradiation (IrPP) is used for the removal of Pb2+ ions from the aqueous solution. The SEM micrographs revealed that surface morphology of plum pomace is suitable for metal adsorption. The results of adsorption kinetics demonstrated that the removal process of Pb2+ ions onto IrPP follows a pseudo-second kinetic model, which is confirmed by a better agreement between qe,cal=227 mg g–1 and qe,exp=224 mg g–1. Therefore, based on preliminary research, it can be concluded that IrPP originating from biowaste is a promising, eco-friendly sorbent of heavy metal from wastewater.

abstract = "Removal of heavy metals is important because of their toxic effects on living organisms and unwanted anthropogenic effects. Therefore, based on preliminary research, it can be concluded that IrPP originating from biowaste is a promising, eco-friendly sorbent of heavy metal from wastewater.",

AB - A carbon-rich product, hydrochar, was synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of spent mushroom substrate (SMS), at temperature of 260 °C. The thermal kinetic analysis has shown that hydrothermally treatment improve the combustion behavior of hydrochar. The kinetic parameters were determined by Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The SMS-260 had a significantly lower activation energy compared to the SMS, which means that this hydrochar needs a smaller amount of energy to start combustion. Generally, the preliminary results show that HTC is an effective way to transform SMS into alternative solid biofuel.
