AB - The ultrafine spinel NiFe1.9M0.1O4 powders (M=Al, Y, Cr, Fe) were synthesized by thermal decomposition of appropriate mixtures of complex compounds with acetylacetone - (2,4 pentadione) ligands ([M(AA)(x)]) at 500 degreesC. Samples were annealed in the temperature range 600-1000 degreesC and the crystallization process was followed by XRD. The largest crystallite size and the highest crystallization rate are observed for NiFe1.9Al0.1O4, while the opposite was found for NiFe1.9Y0.1O4. Strain value in NiFe1.9Y0.1O4 changes sign at temperatures between 700-800 degreesC, while for NiFe1.9M0.1O4 (M=Al, Cr) it has a positive sign and reaches the maximum value at 700 degreesC. The crystal structure of the Samples annealed at 1000 degreesC was refined using the Rietveld profile method. Cation substitution in Ni-ferrite changes its structural and microstructural parameters, and can also significantly influence other physical properties.

AB - The interaction of a Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser (pulse duration less than 2 mus) with carbon and activated carbon cloth was investigated. The investigations have shown that carbon cloth had been physically modified by the TEA CO2 laser. The type of modification strongly depends on laser working regime, such as energy density of the laser beam, etc. The morphology transformations induced by interaction with TEA CO2 laser beams resulted in different specific surface area of activated carbon cloth. Also, laser interaction induced minor changes in crystallographic structure parameters.

AB - Sound velocity was measured in Hg1-xMnxSe semimagnetic semiconductor and Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 spinel ferrite, calculated for HgSe and HgTe, and related to existing data for ZnS structure-type materials. Useful systematics are established, and some of the unknown parameters of Hg1-xMnxSe anticipated. In addition, Hg1-xMnxSe and Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 were exposed to laser radiation in an attempt to relate sound velocity, Brillouin shift, and laser-beam-induced material breakdown. Interesting features were pointed out, as well as capabilities of opto-acoustic measurements to relate chemistry and elastic and magnetic properties of materials or help in the evaluation of infrared absorption spectra. Applicability and limitations of some conventional theories and empirical formulas are deduced.

Some of the samples were treated by nuclear gamma radiation and LY particles and then exposed to laser beams in different working conditions. The sample and damage quality was evaluated on the basis of X-ray, optical and SEM microscopy and micro-hardness experiments. The characteristic brittleness after nuclear gamma irradiation of ferrites and other materials was confirmed in the cases of interactions with laser beams. Characteristic cases of material cracks with CO2 laser were found. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
