AB - This study presents the characterization of waste vitreous enamel generated during the production process of heating devices in a factory in Southeast Europe. The sample was analyzed for chemical composition and concentrations of heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while the mineralogical composition was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The functional groups were recorded using DRIFT spectroscopy, and the morphological and microstructural properties were investigated using FESEM measurements. The results showed that the sample waste vitreous enamel contains high levels of heavy metals and must be classified as hazardous waste. Quartz was found to be the most represented mineral in the sample, while oxides of metals Sb, Fe, Ti, and Cu appeared in the form of supporting minerals. The DRIFT spectra showed the presence of silicates, organic materials, and OH groups in Ti(IV)-OH crystal structure. The FESEM analysis revealed different sizes of particles mainly with polygonal forms and pronounced edges corresponding mostly to the silica and the alumina. These findings can contribute to the development of strategies for the safe and sustainable management of waste vitreous enamel.

AB - In this study, a novel porous carbonaceous material, which has been synthesized from almond pits as precursors, has been characterized for the purpose of application as electrodes in electrochemical sensors. The powdery sample of activated carbonized almond pits was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Spectroscopy (DRIFT). Besides, the electrochemical properties of the sample were investigated in a three-electrode system using a CHI potentiostat. Obtained XRD diffractogram confirmed the amorphous phase of the sample, while DRIFT showed the presence of different functional groups. According to the results, synthesized carbonaceous material was found to possess great potential as a low-cost and eco-friendly material for electrochemical applications.

AB - In the present paper, possible application of novel ceramic adhesives with implementation of waste sludge for bonding of heating devices constructions was studied. For a comparison, five different samples with increasing waste addition percentage were prepared and their performance as heat-resistant adhesives were evaluated in terms of chemical and thermostability as well as ecological safety. Based on ICP-OES analysis it was observed that only sample GC20 is not ecologically-safe due to high level of Cu+ concentration. By withstanding thermal treatment in the range of 200-800˚C for over 100h, all adhesive samples showed satisfactory thermostability. This research confirms the great potential of the studied materials for application as uncostly and eco-friendly adhesives for industrial purpose.

AB - Xanthates are considered to be the most widely used reagents in the flotation processing of sulphide ores, and therefore are largely present in flotation tailings as residuals. Since xanthates posses a certain toxicity and numerous negative effects from an ecological point of view, it is very important to find a suitable solution for their removal from aqueous solutions. In this study, the removal of xanthate from aqueous solutions was investigated using modified waste slag as promising adsorbent. For that purpose, two different starting concentrations of xanthates were selected, -20, and 90 mg/l. The obtained results showed that over 90% of residual xanthate from the aqueous solution can be removed in a period of 24 hours by using modified waste slag when its initial concentration is 20 mg/dm3 .

AB - Because of their widespread use as reagents in the flotation processing of sulphide ores, xanthates are largely found in tailings as residues. Regrettably, it is known that xanthates are not stable compounds and their decomposition generates carbon disulfide (CS2), a substance that is considered toxic. In this study, the chemical stability of xanthate was evaluated by UV/Vis spectroscopy, as a function of pH and time. The zero charge point of modified waste slag was also determined. The obtained results showed that the lowest degree of xanthate degradation is for the pH=10 and was 24.72%. For different concentrations of the KNO3 (0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 mol/dm3 ) the point of zero charge of the modified waste slag was 7.28, respectively

AB - This scientific study investigated the use of activated carbon obtained from black alder cone-like flowers for the adsorption of cyanobacteria cells and cyanotoxins from raw water collected from Aleksandrovac Lake. The material was prepared by carbonization and activation, and the water sample was analysed for microcystin and cylindrospermopsin using LC-MS. The results showed that the lake had a high level of Cyanobacteria, making it unsafe for recreational activities. After treatment with the activated carbon, the removal efficiency was 99,8 %, and with no cyanotoxins remaining. The dominant cyanobacteria species was Raphidiopsis raciborskii, which is a producer of cylindrospermopsin. The study demonstrated the potential of activated carbon for removing harmful cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins from water sources.

AB - A comprehensive investigation of tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib (ERL) electrochemical behavior and interaction with DNA was performed with the aim to clarify its redox mechanism and to determine the mode of binding. Irreversible oxidation and reduction processes of ERL on glassy carbon electrode were investigated using three voltammetric techniques CV, DPV, SWV in pH range between 2.0 and 9.0. Oxidation was established as an adsorption-controlled process, while the reduction manifested diffusion-adsorption mixed controlled process in acidic medium and adsorption became predominant in the neutral solutions. According to the determined number of transferred electrons and protons, oxidation and reduction mechanism of ERL are proposed. To follow the interaction between ERL and DNA, the multilayer ct-DNA electrochemical biosensor was incubated in ERL solutions concentrations ranged from 2 × 10–7 M to 5 × 10–5 M (pH 4.6) for 30 min. SWV measurements have shown the decrease in deoxyadenosine peak current as a consequence of ERL increased concentration and binding to ct-DNA. The calculated value of binding constant was K = 8.25 × 104 M−1. Molecular docking showed that ERL forms hydrophobic interactions when docked into minor groove, as well as when intercalated, and molecular dynamics analysis predicted the stability of obtained complexes. These results together with voltammetric studies imply that the intercalation could be more dominant way ERL binding to DNA compared to minor groove binding. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Gallic acid (GA) is one of the most important and present natural phenolic compounds due to its well-known biological properties, and its detection and monitoring is of great importance. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most studied metallic nanomaterials used in various fields, from biomedical applications to electrochemical sensing devices. In this work, we used the pulsed laser ablation technique in liquid for the one-step preparation of nanoparticles of silver from a pure silver plate base in N,N-dimethylformamide. Obtained nanomaterial was characterized using morphological and electrochemical methods and used for modification of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). Successful immobilization at the surface is confirmed using the surface profiling method. A newly obtained sensor was used for the detection of GA. After parameters optimization, a differential pulse voltammetric protocol was developed, using two approaches - concentration vs. current (GA determination) and peak area vs. current (estimation of the antioxidant capacity). For the first approach sensor linearity was found to be in the range from 0.50 µM to 10 µM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 µM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.50 µM. In the second system operating linear range was the same, while LOD and LOQ were 0.11 µM and 0.34 µM, respectively. Practical application of the method was tested using two approaches: direct measurement of gallic acid in biological fluids and estimation of the antioxidant capacity and food quality purpose.

AB - Adsorption is one of the well-known methods in the removal of various pollutants from water bodies. The activated carbon material has great potential in water purification as an adsorbent. In process of adsorption various pollutants from water, such as different type of pathogens and toxins that can be potential risk for human health, can be effectively removed by activated carbon. The aim of this study is detail characterization of newly synthesized activated carbon materials from biowaste. Dried date palm leaf stalk (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and black alder cone-like flowers (Alnus glutinosa L.) have been chosen as bio-waste precursors. The activated carbon materials were firstly carbonized in atmosphere of N2 and then activated in atmosphere of CO2. Both processes are performed at 750 °C during 1 h. The yields of materials were 36.5 % and 24.7 % made of datepalm leaf stalk (P_AC) and black alder cone-like (A_AC) flowers, respectively. The commercial activated carbon has been characterized in order to compare with synthesized materials. For structural and chemical properties of materials was characterized in detail by: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), low temperature N2 physisorption and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). According to those results, materials obtained from date palm leaf stalk and black alder fruits show that newly synthesized materials have properties of an adsorbent with good potential for usage in water purification from different types of pollutants.

AB - In order to avoid environmental issues considering disposal of great volumes of waste generated from the mining industry processes there is a tendency among researchers to find potential use of these harmful by-products. Waste slag is one such waste product since the content of different undesirable elements like cadmium, arsenic, zinc and other heavy metals may be at a level that can potentially endanger the environment and cause public health issues. On the other hand, tailings generated in the flotation facilities are also considered to be environmentally harmful because of different residual organic reagents that are applied in the process. As it is well-known, xanthates are the most widely used reagents in flotation processing of the sulfide ores, and, therefore largely present in tailings. Besides, xanthates are reported to pose toxicity and numerous negative impacts from the ecological point of view. That explains why it is of great importance to find efficient and low-cost routes for minimizing their remaining levels in tailings, therefore exposure to environment. In this study, xanthate absorption by using of the waste slag as adsorbent was investigated. For that purpose, three different starting concentrations of xanthates were selected, -20, 50 and 90 mg/l. The mass of the absorbent i.e. waste slag put into 50 ml of xanthate solution amounted to 0.01 g. Experiment was conducted on room temperature while pH value was set to be 10. The percentage of the total xanthates content absorbed was evaluated after the period of 24 h. Obtained results indicated that potential reuse of the waste slag for the removal of xanthates, may be justified and after 24 h, 98 %, 58 % and 62 % of the xanthates were adsorbed, respectively. However, further examination is needed in terms of better understanding of xanthate absorption mechanisms and improvement of waste slag absorption efficiency.

AB - In the present paper, possible application of novel concept synthesis method of ceramic composite sealants (CCS) with implementation of alumosilicate-based waste material in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) was investigated. Besides two different basic variants of alumina matrix nanocomposites stabilized by rare earths and carbon materials (CCS-RE and CCS-C), for this purpose two additional sealant compositions with 5 wt.% addition of waste material (CCS-RE5 and CCS-C5) were designated for a comparative study. The aim of this research was to characterize the waste material, as well as the starting components used for developing ceramic composites through various characterization techniques. Analytical procedures for determining chemical composition with focus on heavy metal content in waste was performed in order to ensure the waste is ecologically acceptable to be used as an additive. Besides, the crystalline phase composition of the raw materials as well as of the sealant compositions was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Finally, obtained results revealed that this research may provide the possible solution of forming a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and high-efficient ceramic sealants for application in IT-SOFC by incorporating waste materials in its composition, without significant negative effects on its performance and main properties.

AB - Morphine (MORPH) is natural alkaloid and mainly used as a pain reliever. Its monitoring in human body fluids is crucial for modern medicine. In this paper, we have developed an electrochemical sensor for submicromolar detection of MORPH. The sensor is based on modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) by investigating the FexW1-xO4 ratio in iron tungstate (FeWO4), as well as the ratio of this material in CPE. For the first time, the effect of the iron–tungsten ratio in terms of achieving the best possible electrochemical characteristics for the detection of an important molecule for humans was examined. Morphological and electrochemical characteristics of materials were studied. The best results were obtained using Fe1W3 and 7.5% of modifier in CPE. For MORPH detection, square wave voltammetry (SWV) was optimized. Under the optimized conditions, Fe1W3@CPE resulted in limit of detection (LOD) of the method of 0.58 µM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.94 µM. The linear operating range between 5 and 85 µM of MORPH in the Britton–Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) at pH 8 as supporting electrolyte was obtained. The Fe1W3@CPE sensor resulted in good selectivity and excellent repeatability with relative standard deviation (RSD) and was applied in real-world samples of human urine. Application for direct MORPH detection, without tedious sample pretreatment procedures, suggests that developed electrochemical sensor has appeared to be a suitable competitor for efficient, precise, and accurate monitoring of the MORPH in biological fluids.

abstract = "Morphine (MORPH) is natural alkaloid and mainly used as a pain reliever. AB - Based on the finding that a central antihypertensive agent with high affinity for I1-type imidazoline receptors – rilmenidine, shows cytotoxic effects on cultured cancer cell lines, it has been suggested that imidazoline receptors agonists might have a therapeutic potential in the cancer therapy. Nevertheless, potential rilmenidine side effects caused by activation of α-adrenoceptors, or other associated receptors and enzymes, might hinder its therapeutic benefits. Considering that human α-adrenoceptors belong to the rhodopsin-like class A of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) it is reasonable to assume that imidazolines might have the affinity for other receptors from the same class. Therefore, to investigate possible off-target effects of imidazoline ligands we have prepared a reverse docking protocol on class A GPCRs, using imidazoline ligands and their decoys. To verify our in silico results, three ligands with high scores and three ligands with low scores were tested for antagonistic activity on α2- adrenoceptors.

AB - Due to the lack of approved vaccines against human leishmaniasis and the limitations of the current chemotherapy inducing side effects and drug resistance, development of new, effective chemotherapeutic agents is essential. This study describes the synthesis of a series of novel oxadiazoles and indolizine-containing compounds. The compounds were screened in silico using an EIIP/AQVN filter followed by ligand-based virtual screening and molecular docking to parasite arginase. Top hits were further screened versus human arginase and finally against an anti-target battery to tag their possible interactions with proteins essential for the metabolism and clearance of many substances. Eight candidate compounds were selected for further experimental testing. The results show measurable in vitro anti-leishmanial activity for three compounds. One compound with an IC50 value of 2.18 µM on Leishmania donovani intramacrophage amastigotes is clearly better positioned than the others as an interesting molecular template for further development of new anti-leishmanial agents.

AB - Imidazoline I1 receptor signaling is associated with pathways that regulate cell viability leading to varied cell-type specific phenotypes. We demonstrated that the antihypertensive drug rilmenidine, a selective imidazoline I1 receptor agonist, modulates proliferation and stimulates the proapoptotic protein Bax thus inducing the perturbation of the mitochondrial pathway and apoptosis in human leukemic K562 cells. Rilmenidine acts through a mechanism which involves deactivation of Ras/MAP kinases ERK, p38 and JNK. Moreover, rilmenidine renders K562 cells, which are particularly resistant to chemotherapeutic agents, susceptible to the DNA damaging drug doxorubicin. The rilmenidine co-treatment with doxorubicin reverses G2/M arrest and triggers apoptotic response to DNA damage. Our data offer new insights into the pathways associated with imidazoline I1 receptor activation in K562 cells suggesting rilmenidine as a valuable tool to deepen our understanding of imidazoline I1 receptor signaling in hematologic malignancies and to search for medicinally active agents. AB - The clonidine-like central antihypertensive agent rilmenidine, which has high affinity for I-1-type imidazoline receptors (I-1-IR) was recently found to have cytotoxic effects on cultured cancer cell lines. However, due to its pharmacological effects resulting also from alpha(2)-adrenoceptor activation, rilmenidine cannot be considered a suitable anticancer drug candidate. Here, we report the identification of novel rilmenidine- derived compounds with anticancer potential and devoid of alpha(2)-adrenoceptor effects by means of ligand-and structure-based drug design approaches. Starting from a large virtual library, eleven compounds were selected, synthesized and submitted to biological evaluation. The most active compound 5 exhibited a cytotoxic profile similar to that of rilmenidine, but without appreciable affinity to alpha(2)-adrenoceptors. In addition, compound 5 significantly enhanced the apoptotic response to doxorubicin, and may thus represent an important tool for the development of better adjuvant chemotherapeutic strategies for doxorubicin-insensitive cancers. AB - The group of imidazoline-1 receptors (I-1-IR) agonists encompasses drugs are currently used in treatment of high blood pressure and hyperglycemia. The I-1-IR protein structures have not been determined yet, but Nischarin protein that binds numerous imidazoline ligands inducing initiation of various cell-signaling cascades, including apoptosis, is identified as strong I-1-IR candidate. In this study we examined apoptotic activity of rilmenidine (potent I-1-IR agonist), moxonidine (moderate I-1-IR agonist), and efaroxan (I-1-IR partial agonist) on cancer cell line (K562) expressing Nischarin. The Nischarine domains mapping was performed by use of the Informational Spectrum Method (ISM). The 3D-Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (3D-QSAR) and virtual docking studies of 29 I-1-IR ligands (agonists, partial agonists, and antagonists) were carried out on I-1-IR receptors binding affinities. The 3D-QSAR study defined 3D-pharmacophore models for I-1-IR agonistic and I-1-IR antagonistic activity and created regression model for prediction of I-1-IR activity of novel compounds. The 3D-QSAR models were applied for design and evaluation of novel I-1-IR agonists and I-1-IR antagonists. The most promising I-1-IR ligands with enhanced activities than parent compounds were proposed for synthesis. The results of 3D-QSAR, ISM, and virtual docking studies were in perfect agreement and allowed precise definition of binding mode of I-1-IR agonists (Arg 758, Arg 866, Val 981, and Glu 1057) and significantly different binding modes of I-1-IR antagonists or partial I-1-IR agonists. The performed theoretical study provides reliable system for evaluation of I-1-IR agonistic and I-1-IR antagonistic activity of novel I-1-IR ligands, as drug candidates with anticancer activities.

The performed theoretical study provides reliable system for evaluation of I-1-IR agonistic and I-1-IR antagonistic activity of novel I-1-IR ligands, as drug candidates with anticancer activities.",
