AB - Ensuring the radiation hardness of PbWO4 crystals was one of the main priorities during the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN. The production on an industrial scale of radiation hard crystals and their certification over a period of several years represented a difficult challenge both for CMS and for the crystal suppliers. The present article reviews the related scientific and technological problems encountered.

AB - The response of the CMS barrel calorimeter (electromagnetic plus hadronic) to hadrons, electrons and muons over a wide momentum range from 2 to 350 GeV/c has been measured. To our knowledge, this is the widest range of momenta in which any calorimeter system has been studied. These tests, carried out at the H2 beam-line at CERN, provide a wealth of information, especially at low energies. The analysis of the differences in calorimeter response to charged pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons and a detailed discussion of the underlying phenomena are presented. We also show techniques that apply corrections to the signals from the considerably different electromagnetic (EB) and hadronic (HB) barrel calorimeters in reconstructing the energies of hadrons. Above 5 GeV/c, these corrections improve the energy resolution of the combined system where the stochastic term equals 84.7 +/- 1.6% and the constant term is 7.4 +/- 0.8%. The corrected mean response remains constant within 1.3% rms.

AB - The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 10(34)cm(-2)s(-1) (10(27)cm(-2)s(-1)). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4 pi solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudo-rapidity coverage to high values (vertical bar eta vertical bar LT = 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

AB - Calibration of the relative response of the individual channels of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector was accomplished, before installation, with cosmic ray muons and test beams. One fourth of the calorimeter was exposed to a beam of high energy electrons and the relative calibration of the channels, the intercalibration, was found to be reproducible to a precision of about 0.3%. Additionally, data were collected with cosmic rays for the entire ECAL barrel during the commissioning phase. By comparing the intercalibration constants obtained with the electron beam data with those from the cosmic ray data, it is demonstrated that the latter provide an intercalibration precision of 1.5% over most of the barrel ECAL. The best intercalibration precision is expected to come from the analysis of events collected in situ during the LHC operation. Using data collected with both electrons and pion beams, several aspects of the intercalibration procedures based on electrons or neutral pions were investigated.

AB - It is well known that medical linear accelerators generate activation products when operated above certain electron (photon) energies. The aim of the present work is to assess the activation behavior of a medium-energy radiotherapy linear accelerator by applying in situ gamma-ray spectrometry and dose measurements, and to estimate the additional dose to radiotherapy staff on the basis of these results. Spectral analysis was performed parallel to dose rate measurements in the isocenter of the linear accelerator, immediately after the termination of irradiation. The following radioisotopes were detected by spectral analysis: (28)Al, (62)Cu, (56)Mn, (64)Cu, (187)W, and (57)Ni. The short-lived isotopes such as (28)Al and (62)Cu are the most important factors of the clinical routine, while the contribution to the radiation dose of medium-lived isotopes such as (56)Mn, (57)Ni, (64)Cu, and (187)W increases during the working day. Measured dose rates at the isocenter ranged from 2.2 mu Sv/h to 10 mu Sv/h in various measuring points of interest for the members of the radiotherapy staff. Within the period of 10 minutes, the dose rate decreased to values of 0.8 mu Sv/h. According to actual workloads in radiotherapy departments, a realistic exposure scenario was set, resulting in a maximal additional annual whole body dose to the radiotherapy staff of about 3.5 mSv.

AB - The energy resolution of the barrel part of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter has been studied using electrons of 20 to 250 GeV in a test beam. The incident electrons energy was reconstructed by summing the energy measured in arrays of 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 channels. There was no significant amount of correlated noise observed within these arrays. For electrons incident at the centre of the studied 3 x 3 arrays of crystals, the mean stochastic term was measured to be 2.8% and the mean constant term to be 0.3%. The amount of the incident electrons energy which is contained within the array depends on its position of incidence. The variation of the containment with position is corrected for using the distribution of the measured energy within the array. For uniform illumination of a crystal with 120 GeV electrons a resolution of 0.5% was achieved. The energy resolution meets the design goal for the detector.

AB - Performance tests of some aspects of the CMS ECAL were carried out on modules of the barrel sub-system in 2002 and 2003. A brief test with high energy electron beams was made in late 2003 to validate prototypes of the new Very Front End electronics. The final versions of the monitoring and cooling systems, and of the high and low voltage regulation were used in these tests. The results are consistent with the performance targets including those for noise and overall energy resolution, required to fulfil the physics programme of CMS at the LHC.

AB - An artificial neural network (ANN) model for the prediction of measuring uncertainties in gamma-ray spectrometry was developed and optimized. A three-layer feed-forward ANN with back-propagation learning algorithm was used to model uncertainties of measurement of activity levels of eight radionuclides (Ra-226, U-238, U-235, K-40, Th-232, Cs-134, Cs-137 and Be-7) in soil samples as a function of measurement time. It was shown that the neural network provides useful data even from small experimental databases. The performance of the optimized neural network was found to be very good, with correlation coefficients (R-2) between measured and predicted uncertainties ranging from 0.9050 to 0.9915. The correlation coefficients did not significantly deteriorate when the network was tested on samples with greatly different uranium-to-thorium (U-238/Th-232) ratios. The differences between measured and predicted uncertainties were not influenced by the absolute values of uncertainties of measured radionuclide activities. Once the ANN is trained, it could be employed in analyzing soil samples regardless of the U-238/Th-232 ratio. It was concluded that a considerable saving in time could be obtained using the trained neural network model for predicting the measurement times needed to attain the desired statistical accuracy. AB - Radon measurements were provided during the different stages of building of a low-level laboratory in Belgrade. The depth of the laboratory is 12 m, equivalent to 30 m of water with an area of 45 m(2). The whole of the laboratory is hermetically lined with 1 mm Al foil and is ventilated with filtered air. Radon concentrations were measured with the CR-39 detector as well as via the gamma-ray spectroscopic measurements. The radon concentrations in the air were achieved to 20 Bqm(-3) and reduction of secondary and tertiary cosmic-ray fluxes is five times when ventilation, filtering and sealing was applied.

AB - The results of a detailed study of the low-level performance of a NaI(Tl) shield added to an iron shielded HPGe spectrometer are presented. Both the slow and the fast anticoincidence gating modes were tested, the slow mode being found better suited for general low-level spectroscopy applications. In long runs the stability of the system in this mode is satisfactory. The anticoincidence action of the NaI(Tl) shield lowers the integral background of the iron shielded HPGe detector in the energy range from 30 keV to 2 MeV by a factor of 6.5, and suppresses the continuum above 150 keV by a factor larger than 10. AB - We show that for cylindrical voluminous sources in gamma-ray spectroscopy the relative error of the spectral intensity of a low-energy spectral line, as the height of the source increases, saturates faster than the spectral intensity itself. This significantly reduces the quantity of the required sample material as compared to that based on the usual considerations of the spectral intensity only. We also demonstrate that there exists a weakly pronounced height of the source (the sourer size) which minimizes the relative error of the intensity of a given low-energy spectral line, Due to the smallness of the effect the benefit of introducing the concept of the truly optimum size of the source is more on a psychological side, one should feel easier using an optimum quantity of the source material than merely a sufficient one, as is otherwise the case. AB - A method to reduce the dead time of multichannel analyzers which uses multiple sample-and-hold circuits in the input circuitry of the analyzers analog-digital converter is proposed. Due to the exponential distribution of time intervals between successive pulses, the dead time is greatly reduced with even a small number of sample-and-hold circuits. The effects of the method are analyzed and discussed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0034-6748(99)04206-9].

AB - We discuss the possible implications of the peculiar recurrence relation which we demonstrate to hold for the series of empirical magic numbers. These include thc space-wise shell structure of the nucleus in both the proton and neutron distributions which in beta-stable nuclei overlap completely, predictions of nuclear halos and skins, the new equation of the line of beta-stability. predictions for the beta-stable superheavy nuclei, the effects on the concept of nuclear matter, and a variation of the liquid drop model which partly conforms to such a view of the nucleus.

AB - The Monte Carlo program has been developed which generates the spectral responses of gamma-ray spectrometers (NaI, Ge, etc.) for radiations of arbitrarily complex composition and for easily definable disposition of sources, passive absorbers and/or scatterers and detectors, all of which can be of prismoidal, cylindrical and toroidal shapes as well as of arbitrary chemical composition. Any spectrum may be collected either as a single one or in coincidence with any other spectrum. The program is comfortably run on any PC of modest configuration. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. AB - The gamma spectrum of Cs-137 was measured by means of a low-level shielded and Compton-suppressed HpGe spectrometer. The gamma line with the energy 283.4 keV and absolute intensity of 5.3(14)X10(-6) was found. It was concluded that the 283.4 keV intermediate level in Ba-137 [seen earlier in (n,ngamma) measurements] is populated in the beta decay of Cs-137 with the comparative half-life of log ft=15.3(3).
