AB - In this paper, we describe synthesis and characterization of YVO 4 and Eu 3+ -doped YVO 4 nanopowders. Two methods of preparation were used—solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and classical ceramic method (CCM)—and compared. Morphology and structure of all samples were characterized with atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy was used to discuss the isotope-like effect. It is confirmed that doping with Eu ions results in a change of Raman spectra of doped samples—new modes arise, and intensity of existing ones change. Influence of different preparation methods on isotope-like effect is presented with detailed calculations of shifted modes. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB - Visible-light active mesoporous N,S-doped and co-doped anatase TiO2 powders were synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route, starting from TiCl4 and Ti((OPr)-Pr-i)(4) dissolved in cyclohexane or dimethyl sulfoxide, later used as a S-doping agent. After drying in an inert atmosphere, the gels were annealed at 500 degrees C for 3 h, in air or ammonia flow, later used for N-doping. The undoped titania powder, obtained by annealing in air of the cyclohexane-based gel, was also annealed in ammonia to deduce which method is more efficient for N-doping: gel or powder annealing. The post-annealing in air after annealing in ammonia was optimized to attain the best photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under simulated visible light. The size of anatase nanocrystals decreased by doping and the specific surface area of the powders increased. The XPS analysis confirmed a successful substitution of Ti4+ by S(4+) and/or S(6+), which caused a very small band-gap narrowing. The gel annealing in ammonia was much more efficient for interstitial nitrogen incorporation in TiO2 lattice than the powder annealing. The annealing in ammonia of the gel synthesized with dimethyl sulfoxide provided the highest visible-light activity owing to high specific surface area, appropriate mesoporosity and high photoabsorption due to efficient N,S co-doping. AB - Ordered titania nanotubes (pore diameter approximate to 90 nm and wall thickness approximate to 10 nm) were obtained by the anodization technique and used for the ex-situ deposition of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) via simple immersion of titania substrates in the CdS colloid. The colloidal dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in water was obtained in the presence of the bifunctional ligand, mercapto silane, which binds to the surface of CdS providing stability to the colloid and preventing further growth of the synthesized nanoparticles. The blue-shift of the optical absorption indicated that the CdS nanoparticles were of quantum dot size. Using the effective mass model, the average particle size was calculated to be 5.4 nm. Transmission electron microscopy provided the verification for the estimated size of the nanoparticles, which was followed by performing selected area electron diffraction to determine the mixed phase (cubic and hexagonal) of the synthesized CdS QDs. Scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanostructures consisting of TiO2 nanotubes with different loadings of CdS QDs (after 24 h and 72 h immersion). It was demonstrated that mercapto silane efficiently binds CdS QDs onto TiO2 nanotubes enabling Visible-light response of the obtained nanocomposites. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - BaCe(0.9)Ee(0.1)O(2.95) (BCE) nanopowder was synthesized by citric-nitric autocombustion method. Rietveld refinement analysis showed that unit cell volume was slightly larger compared with the most known BaCe0.9Y0.1O2.95, which might contribute to higher proton mobility. Sinterability of BaCeO3 is also enhanced by doping with Eu, since dense single-phased BCE electrolyte microstructure comprising of 1-2mm grains was obtained after sintering at 1450 degrees C for 5 h. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed separate bulk and grain boundary contributions to the total electrolyte conductivity below 200 degrees C. The grain boundary conductivity was one to two orders of magnitude lower than the bulk conductivity, indicating blocking effect of the grain boundaries to the mobility of charge carriers. This effect diminished completely above 500 degrees C and only total conductivities were determined between 500 and 700 degrees C. Conductivity of BCE in a wet hydrogen atmosphere at 600 degrees C reached 1.2 x 10(-2) S/cm, which can be considered as one of the highest conductivities among BaCeO3 based proton conductors.
