AB - N-doped TiO2/carbon composites (TiO2/CN) with different nitrogen content, were obtained starting from titanium isopropoxide and glucose, and by varying the amount of melamine, added to starting reaction mixture. For comparison, an undoped sample (TiO2/C) was also prepared. Structural and surface characteristics were determined through scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CN composites was examined via photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and multiclass pharmaceuticals from water solution. It was found that N doping of TiO2/carbon composites induced changes in structural and surface characteristics of TiO2/CN composites, improving their adsorption, but decreasing photocatalytic efficiency. Nevertheless, TiO2/CN0.05 composite obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of glucose and 0.05 g melamine showed the highest efficiency for removing selected pharmaceuticals and methylene blue from aqueous solutions through the combined processes of adsorption in the dark, and photocatalytic degradation under UV and visible irradiation.

AB - An efficient pTSA-mediated cyclization cascade reaction of Pfitzinger's ester and benzoyl hydrazines has been developed providing a simple procedure for synthesis of pyrrolo [3,4-c]quinoline-1,3-dione derivatives. Unlike traditional synthetic protocol, this method avoids an additional step of conversion of quinoline-3,4-dicarboxylic acids to an anhydride, allowing direct reaction of ester derivative with hydrazine nucleophiles. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Hybrid compounds that combine the 1,3,4-thiadiazole-containing catechol moiety with a chalcone motif were synthesized and examined for their antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, and DNA-binding activity. A series of thirteen compounds showed strong antioxidant and cytotoxic effects on human acute promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. Several compounds exerted good cytotoxic activities on cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells. The treatment of HeLa cells with IC50 and double IC50 concentrations of the compounds 5a, 5c, 5f, and 5m induced a statistically significant increase in the percentage of cells within a subG1 cell cycle phase. The examined compounds caused G2/M cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells. Each of these compounds triggered apoptosis in HeLa cells through activation of caspase-3, the main effector caspase, caspase-8, which is involved in the extrinsic apoptotic pathway, and caspase-9, which is involved in the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. All of the examined compounds decreased the expression levels of MMP2 in HeLa cells and levels of protumorigenic miR-133b. Compounds 5a and 5m lowered the expression level of oncogenic miR-21 in HeLa cells. In addition, compounds 5a, 5f, and 5m decreased the expression levels of oncogenic miR-155 while the treatment of HeLa cells with compounds 5a, 5c, and 5f increased expression of tumor-suppressive miR-206. Observed effects of these compounds on expression levels of four examined miRNAs suggest their prominent cancer-suppressive activity. An investigation by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy showed more efficient calf thymus DNA binding activity of the compound 5m in comparison to other tested compounds. Results of a pUC19 plasmid cleavage study and comet assay showed DNA damaging activities of compounds 5a and 5c.

AB - Activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared using plane tree seed (PTS) as a cheap and renewable raw material. The plane tree seeds were firstly treated combining magnetic (MM) and ultrasonic mixing (USM) during 0.5, 1 and 3 h in 1 M, 3 M and 6 M of H3PO4 solutions, and then activated at 260 degrees C during 20 h (low temperature hydrothermal carbonization-low HTC) in above mentioned solutions of the same molarity. The influence of combined mixing and activation processes on physical, structural and morphological properties, and their optimization was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

AB - dThe possibility of sorption of technetium-99 in the form of pertechnetate anion (TcO(4)(-)) and the sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) from aqueous solution by chelating polymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were investigated. Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME), with different amount of the crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA), were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine (deta). We propose that nonspecific sorption of pertechnetate anion via electrostatic interactions takes place at the protonated amino groups of macroporous crosslinked copolymer. The results of batch experiments per-formed at pH 1-14 showed fast sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) by amino-functionalized PGME-deta in a wide range of pH, that is, from 1.0 to 9.0. Almost complete removal of TcO(4)(-) (91-98%) was reached within 180 min in the stated pH range (1.0-9.0), with the sorption half-times of under 25 min. The partitioning coefficients of linear adsorption isotherms, with 180-min equilibrium time, reach the high values of 2130 mL g(-1) and 1698 mL g(-1) for the two samples of synthesized PGME-deta. AB - Complexes based on amidated pectin (AP) and poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) were prepared by casting films from solutions of AP and PIA in different ratios with the pectin amount ranging from 10% to 90% by mass. The complexes were investigated by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetry (TG). In all investigated ratios of AP/PIA glassy transparent films with a uniform structure were obtained. The results of elemental analysis confirmed the composition of the complexes, and FTIR spectroscopy has shown carboxylic and amide peak shifting, indicating complex formation between AP and PIA. Comparison of thermograms of AP/PIA films with different ratios of AP indicated that the increase of the amount of AP increases the thermal stability of the films by retarding the onset of the main degradation processes. AB - This paper reports synthesis of a new diaminodioxime ligand, derivative of
hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO). The 99mTc(V)-d,l-HM-PAO
complex is well-known radiopharmaceutical for regional blood flow imaging. The
structure of the new ligand was investigated by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 13C
NMR. Complexation studies with 99mTc were carried out using stannous chloride as
the reducing agent. The complex was characterized by paper chromatography and
thin-layer chromatography. It was obtained in high yield when the reactions were
carried out at pH=9. Also, it was found that the complex was stable up to 4 h.

AB - Semi-IPNs based on polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) were prepared by two different techniques, polymerizing itaconic acid in the presence of polyacrylamide gel (Samples I) and by makiug the polyacrylamide gel in the presence of poly(itaconic acid) (Samples 11), with different PAAm/PIA ratios. The swelling behavior of the semi-IPNs reveals that gels with low PIA content swell more, while those with high PIA content swell less than a pure PAAm gel, probably due to the formation of intermacromolecular gel-polymer complexes on the basis of hydrogen bonds. The results of thermal analysis indicate an improved therinal stability of the hydrogels and complexes compared with PIA and PAAm.
