AB  - The aim of this study was to assess the effects of l-cysteine (Cys) (7 mg/kg) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) (50 mg/kg) in the rat liver caused by subchronic i.p. application of methionine (Met) (0.8 mmol/kg) during 21 days. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, glutathione content (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activities were determined in the liver tissue and activities of liver enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT) and concentrations of total proteins and albumin were determinated in plasma/serum. Catalase, superoxide dismutase, and acetylcholinesterase activities were increased by Cys and NAC. Met caused periportal mononuclear infiltration and rare focal necrosis of hepatocytes. In Cys- and NAC-supplemented groups, intracellular edema and microvesicular fatty changes without necrosis were noticed. We observed decrease of AST, ALT, and ALP activity in the methionine-treated group. Our results indicate that Cys and NAC application can increase activity of antioxidative enzymes and prevent intensive histological changes in liver in condition of subchronic methionine exposure.

AB  - The effects of γ-rays on the DNA level, i.e. formation of double-strand breaks and
expression of p21 were studied in vitro on the human HTB 140 melanoma cells.
Cells were exposed to the dose range from 2 to 16 Gy. Effects were analyzed 30
min, 2, 6 and 24 h after irradiation. It has been shown that the level of
phosphorylated histone H2AX (γH2AX) is time- and dose-dependent, as well as
the expression of p21.

AB  - In order to increase radio-sensitivity of human lung adenocarcinoma NCI-H1568
cells, targeted therapy drug, erlotinib was used. The impact of radiation and
erlotinib on cell behaviour was analyzed using three biological endpoints.
Irradiations with γ-rays resulted in reduction of cell survival, viability and
proliferation. Erlotinib significantly inhibited cell growth and proliferation
capacity. Combined treatments with radiation and erlotinib showed high level of
reduction of cell viability and proliferation. Preliminary data encourage further
investigations of mechanisms underlying the radiation responses enhanced by
erlotinib.

AB  - The natural radioactivity in zirconium samples used in the ceramics industry has
been measured. One of the most important use of zircon is as opacifier for ceramic
tiles. The measurements were made by gamma spectrometry with a high purity
germanium detector (HPGe). The gamma index, I, the external hazard index, Hex
and the internal hazard index, Hin, were calculated. The investigated samples can
be used as one component in the recipe for the production of ceramics only if 3%
of the samples used.

AB  - Distributions of natural gamma emitting radionuclides 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were determined in two soil profiles rigosol type under the peach-tree field: one from and second out of the peach-tree root zone. Radioisotope activities (Bq/kg) lie in the range of normal terrestrial gamma-radiation in soil [1]. It is found that variation in natural radionuclides activities along a soil depth of 0-80 cm is due to differences in main soil properties: pH-reaction, carbonates, humus, clay and sand contents confirmed by high correlation between them.

AB  - Photoacoustic (PA) heat-transmission measurements were used to study transport in a nearly intrinsic Ge single crystal. A theoretical model was developed which quantitatively describes excess carrier and thermal-wave space distributions, within the semiconductor under monochromatic cw modulated excitation. The PA heat-transmission, reflection, and photothermal-beam-deflection signals can be calculated using this model. It is shown that the frequency characteristic of the measurement system can be eliminated using measurements on different thicknesses of the same sample. It is also shown that both the normalized phase and amplitude spectra, as a function of the modulation frequency, can be used to determine the values of the thermal diffusivity, the excess-carrier lifetime, and the surface recombination velocity.
