AB - Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing clove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40 °C). Aiming to maximize CO loading in the films with acceptable morphological, structural and thermal properties, CO2 pressure, impregnation time and G:Ch mass ratio were varied. Gelatin fraction in the films of 25-50 wt.%, scCO2 pressures of 10-20 MPa and impregnation time of 2-6 h impregnation favoured the CO loading. Processing of the film with equal gelatin to chitosan mass ratio (G/Ch50:50) at 10 MPa for 2 h yielded sufficiently high loading (56 mg CO/gfilm) without an adverse effect on morphological properties. The G/Ch50:50 film was therefore chosen for structural and thermal analyses. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed successful CO incorporation into the G/Ch50:50 and its interaction with the film. Plasticizing effect of scCO2 and CO on the film was evidenced by DSC. Incorporation of 56 mg CO/gfilm into the G/Ch50:50 didn't affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110 °C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications. © 2019, CI and CEQ. AB - Plasmon-longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon interaction in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals was investigated by measuring far-infrared reflectivity spectra in the 100-700 cm(-1) spectral range at room temperature. Analysis of the obtained results revealed that the presence of free charge carriers becomes significant with the particle size decrease to nanometer range and increase of lattice defects. The free charge carriers were found to be responsible for a plasmon mode which coupled strongly with two LO phonon modes of ceria. The presence of more pronounced low-frequency Drude tail and the screening of the phonon modes in Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals implied that the Plasmon-LO phonon interaction increased with doping. Factorized and additive dielectric function models were applied to deduce about the coupled and decoupled LO phonon frequencies and the structure of the decoupled plasmon mode in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals. These models were combined with Bruggeman effective medium approximation in order to properly describe the influence of porosity on the infrared reflectivity spectra. With increasing dopant content, the decoupled plasmon mode exhibited redshift and damping decrease implying that doping induced semiconductor-to-metalic state transition took place.

AB - Y-doped HfO2 nanopowders, produced by metathesis synthesis, exhibit ferromagnetism at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements have shown that HfO2 nanopowders undergo phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal and cubic phase with increasing of Y content. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analysis gave evidence that Y-doped HfO2 nanopowders are oxygen deficient. The ferromagnetic properties of Y-doped HfO2 nanocrystals are dependent on crystal structure changes. The structural transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal phase with Y doping is followed by increased ferromagnetic ordering because of the increased concentration of oxygen vacancies (V-O) in different charge states. Higher Y content favors the formation of cubic phase and the ferromagnetism significantly weakens. In cubic hafnia phase, yttrium can form (V-O-Y-Hf) defect complexes in different charge states. The appearance of these complexes can be responsible for the degradation of ferromagnetic ordering. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Nanocrystalline powders of solid solution CeO2-Bi2O3 were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature reaction (SPRT) procedure with composition (Ce1-xBixO2-delta where the x = 0.1-0.5). X-ray diffraction analyses show that for x LT 0.50 a solid solution with fluorite structure is formed. Rietvelds structure refinement method was applied to characterize prepared powders and its microstructure (size strain). The lattice parameters increase according to Vegards rule with increasing of Bi concentration. The average crystallite size is about 2-3 nm. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples at room temperature. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas increase of Bi content provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria. Specific surface area of obtained powders was measured by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Room-temperature ferromagnetism was observed in undoped and Fe(2+(3+))-doped CeO(2) nanocrystals. In Fe-doped samples the enhancement of ferromagnetic ordering occurs by changing the valence state of Fe ions, whereas Raman spectra demonstrated strong electron-molecular vibrational coupling and increase in oxygen vacancy concentration. Air annealing showed degradation of ferromagnetic ordering and appearance of hematite phase in Fe(3+)-doped sample. The observed ferromagnetic coupling in Fe-doped samples, associated with the presence of magnetic ions mediated by single charged O(2-) vacancies, demonstrated that valence state of dopant has a strong influence on magnetic properties of CeO(2) nanoparticles. AB - In this paper nanometric powders of solid solution of the host compound ceria (CeO(2)) with Pr dopant in the lattice were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) synthesis with composition (Ce(0.9)Pr(0.1)O(2-delta)). Powder properties such as specific surface area crystallite and particle size and lattice parameters have been studied. BET, TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples at room temperature. Obtained solid solution exhibits a fluorite-type crystal structure. The average crystallite size is about 3-4 nm. Williamson-Hall plots were used to separate the effect of the size and strain in the nanocrystals. It is noticed the redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F(2g) mode which is explained with nanocrystalline nature of powders. Color characters of solid solution depending on calcinations temperature and their position in the chromaticity diagram were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry (diffuse reflectance). AB - We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and Fe2+(Fe3+) doped CeO2 nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of CeO2 fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 cm(-1), seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the CeO2 intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 cm(-1), 1320 cm(-1) and 1600 cm(-1), which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) cation deficient structure, to 2 omega(LO) IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

AB - Pure and 10 mol% Fe3+ doped CeO2 nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrothermal method using two different basic solutions (NH4OH and NaOH). All the samples were calcinated at 140 degrees C and 200 degrees C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.

AB - Nanopowdered solid solution Ce(1-x)Fe(x)O(2-delta) samples (0 LT = x LT = 0.1) were synthesized by a self-propagating room temperature synthesis (SPRT). XRD and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature were used to study the vibrational properties of these materials as well as the Fe solubility in ceria lattice. Results show that all obtained powders are solid solutions with a fluorite-type crystal structure and all powders were nanometric in size. The average size of Ce(1-x)Fe(x)O(2-delta) particles lies about 5 nm. The results of electrical properties of the sintered samples investigated by an ac impedance spectroscopy are also presented and discussed. It was confirmed that Fe(3+) doped ceria material has a potential as electrolyte for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Nichrome coatings have been deposited using the d.c. sputtering of the target (80% Ni-20% Cr wt.) by Ar+ ions at a working pressure of 10(-1) Pa and at room temperature. After the air exposure of samples at room temperature, their phase composition and structure was studied by X-ray diffraction, while the surface elemental composition was determined by low energy ion scattering (LEIS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). AES has been also used for the bulk composition analysis. There is a significant difference between the compositions of the surface and of the bulk. Surface segregation of chromium was observed using both LEIS and AES, and it was found that the chromium concentration increases with that of oxygen adsorbed at the surface during the air exposure. The nichrome surface composition is qualitatively the same as in the case of its exposure to O-2 at room temperature, but significantly different from that of the thermally annealed nichrome to 400 degrees C in air. AB - The W-Ti thin films are deposited by the dc Ar+ sputtering of W(70%)-Ti(30%) a.t. target on silicon substrates. The surface composition and structure of the thin film, previously exposed to air, was carded out. The surface structure was undertaken using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and compared to that of the thin film interior. The surface morphology was determined by the Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). The surface composition and chemical bonding of elements on the Ti-W film were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS). The measurements show that the overlayer of metallic oxides TiO2, and WO3 is formed. The first atomic layer is occupied by TiO2 only, and its thickness is estimated to about 3.2 +/- 0.4 nm. The strong surface segregation of Ti is triggered by the surface oxidation, which is confirmed by the thermodynamical considerations. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

AB - Raman spectra of Nd doped ceria nanocrystals were measured by gradual heating and cooling over the temperature range of 293-1073 K and analyzed using the phonon confinement model that incorporates inhomogeneous strain and anharmonic effects. We have demonstrated that in nanograins, four-phonon anharmonic processes are more dominant at higher temperatures than size effects. After the heat treatment, Nd doped ceria nanocrystals remain of nanometric range (similar to 20 nm) while the concentration of oxygen vacancies is still high in ceria lattice, making this material convenient for solid oxide fuel cells application. AB - A series of Ce1-xBaxO2-y (5 LT = x LT = 0.20) nanometric powders were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature synthesis. XRD and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples. at room temperature. All the samples are solid solutions with fluorite type structure with an average crystallite size about 5 nm. The redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F g mode can be well explained with combined confinement and strain effects because of the nanocrystalline powders nature. The appearance of the additional peaks at similar to 560 cm(-1) and similar to 600 cm(-1), are attributed to extrinsic and intrinsic O2- vacancies in ceria lattice. Raman spectra of temperature treated Ce0.80Ba0.20O2-delta sample revealed the instability of this system.

AB - Thin films of nichrome were deposited by d.c. sputtering of a target (80%Ni - 20%Cr w.t.) by Ar+ ions at a working pressure of 10(-1) Pa and at room temperature. The phase composition and grain size were studied by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), while the surface chemical composition was determined by Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS). Analysis of phase composition showed that the NiCr thin films were a solid solution of chromium in a nickel matrix with increased nickel lattice parameters. LEIS analysis showed the presence of Ni, Cr and O in the first atomic layer. There is a strong suspicion that surface passivation occurred by forming Cr2O3 oxide at the surface.
