AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298–343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g− 1 at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - The adsorption properties of two zeolite types, faujasite (NaY, ZnY, CoY) and LTA-4A zeolite (NaA, ZnA, CoA), towards technetium were studied in batch static experiments. The Si/Al ratio, acidity, dealumination, chargebalance cations of zeolite, contact time and temperature determined the adsorption efficiency. The maximum removal efficiency of 98.8% and Kdvalue (2.06 × 10−4 cm3 g−1) was achieved using CoY (zeolite type Y). The kinetics of technetium adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model. The TcO2adsorption is mainly due to the hydrogen bonds between protons of the zeolitic structural OH groups (Bronsted acid center) and oxygen from the TcO2−.

AB - Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) has recently drawn attention due to its outstanding multifunctional properties, as well as for being a lead-free ceramic material. In the current study, BiFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by strictly controlled hydrothermal process. High geometric molded particles of a small size and with high degree of purity (99.74 %) were obtained. We used nitrates of bismuth and iron as well as 8M potassium hydroxide as a basis for synthesis. The results of the X-ray diffraction study of the obtained polycrystalline material show single-phase bismuth ferrite that crystallizes with a rhombohedral lattice. Using the Rietveld method it has been determined that the particles of the synthesized powder are in a nanometric range with a particle size of about 30 nm. It was found that all reflec-tions of the obtained bismuth ferrite belong to the rhombohedral α-BiFeO3 phase which crystallizes in the space group R3c (No. 161). In addition, electronic and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 were investigated using combination of experimental and theoretical methods. HRTEM analysis confirmed existence of twin stacking faults, which are responsible for enhanced magnetic properties. EPR measurements suggested existence of electrons trapped by vacancies or defects. It has been pro-posed that Fe3+−OV defect complex could be created at elevated temperatures fol-lowed by formation of trivalent Fe ions, which intensely provide local 3d moments. The magnetic behavior of the synthesized material was studied by means of SQUID device and using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows the antiferomagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition at the temperature of TN = 220K, while below this temperature weak ferro-magnetic behavior has been detected. Theoretical studies were performed using a full potential linearized augmented plane-waves plus local orbital (FP(L)APW+lo) method, based on the density functional theory (DFT). In addition, a structure prediction has been performed and 11 additional BiFeO3 modifications have been pro-posed. In the next stage, an ab initio optimization of predicted structures has been performed and the structure of the γ-phase has been elucidated.

AB - Palladium ion-exchanged zeolite X (PdX) was prepared by zeolite impregnation with palladium acetylacetonate, followed by thermal degradation of the salt. PdX was characterised using SEM-EDS, ICP-OES and XRD. Analysis revealed presence of 7.78 wt.% of Pd in the form of PdO. Subsequently, PdX was tested for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium using linear scan voltammetry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The influence of addition of carbon black on the materials catalytic performance was also investigated. The HER kinetic parameters, including Tafel slope, exchange current density and activation energy, were determined. In order to provide atomic-level insights, experimental results were complemented by density functional theory calculations. It is suggested that favourable hydrogen adsorption energetics on PdO is responsible for efficient HER catalysis by this novel electrocatalyst. (c) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. In the fifth cycle, a substantial sorption loss of 37% was observed. (c) 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

abstract = "Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. (c) 2016 Society of Chemical Industry",

AB - Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is one of the most studied multiferroic system with a large number of published articles. This is mainly because BiFeO3 material possesses both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties observed at room temperature, which opens great possibility for industrial and technological applications. Well crystallized single-crystal BiFeO3 nanopowder has been successfully synthesized with the hydrothermal method. The phase composition of the synthesized samples was determined by the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the results showed that synthesized material crystallizes in the space group R3c as alpha-BiFeO3 phase, which was confirmed by the previous experiments. In addition, a structure prediction has been performed and 11 additional BiFeO3 modifications have been proposed. In the next phase, an ab initio optimization of predicted structures has been performed and the structure of the gamma-form has been elucidated. Furthermore, electronic and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 were investigated using combination of experimental and theoretical methods. Spectroscopic Ellipsometry has been used to study electronic properties of BiFeO3, while magnetic behavior of synthesized material was investigated by SQUID. Finally, theoretical studies were performed using a full potential linearized augmented plane-waves plus local orbital (FP(L)APW+lo) method, based on density functional theory (DFT).

AB - Electrodes based on composites of zeolites with carbonized polyaniline prepared in the presence of 5-sulfosalicylic acid are evaluated for both qualitative and quantitative determination of phenols in aqueous solutions. Zeolites used included NaX and NaY, as well as their transition metal (Mn and Cu) cation-exchanged forms, and they were all characterized usingXRPD, FTIR and SEM. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study composites electrochemical response in the presence of p-nitrophenol, phenol and 5-aminophenol in acidic, neutral and al- kaline media. Linear dependence of current on p-nitrophenol concentration in acidic media was obtained in 0.11 mM concentration range. The comparative evaluation of the electrochemical response of NaX/carbonized polyaniline composite and its individual components revealed significantly lower limit of detection obtained using composite electrode (1.27 mu M) compared to that obtained using pure zeolite (135 mu M) or pure carbonized polyaniline (94.5 mu M) electrode. Composite electrode gave response to p-nitrophenol presence in neutral media as well, but it quickly disappeared with continuous scanning, while no clear response could be seen in highly alkaline media. Thus, this work demonstrates benefits of using novel composite based on zeolites and carbonized polyaniline for sensing of phenols in acidic aqueous solutions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB - In this paper, bismuth ferrite (BFO) particles synthesized by controlled hydrothermal process, where the particles of small sizes and with high purity were obtained. Structural analysis showed that non-annealed powder can be perfectly fitted to rhombohedral space group R3c and contains a very small amount of secondary phase, whereas the final product (annealed at 800 degrees C) represents single-phase perovskite powder with high crystallinity. HRTEM analysis confirmed existence of twin stacking faults, which are responsible for enhanced magnetic properties. EPR measurements suggested existence of electrons trapped by vacancies or defects. It has been proposed that existence of Fe3+ - O-V defect complex could be generated at elevated temperatures followed by formation of trivalent Fe ions, which intensely provide local 3d moments.

AB - Nanosized bismuth ferrite powder has a potential application in the production of lead free piezoelectric materials for actuators as well as magnetoelectric sensors. The simple, low-costing and energy-saving hydrothermal method has advantages over the conventional methods. BiFeO3 powders were made using Bi(NO3)35H2O and Fe(NO3)3 9H2O as starting material and 8 M KOH as mineralizer. The particle size and morphology were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase composition of obtained samples was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. It revealed that synthesized material crystallize in space group R3c with cell parameters a = b = 5.5780(10) Å and c = 13,863(3) Å. IR and Raman spectroscopy have been performed on the synthesized bismuth ferrite (BFO) powders in order to confirm the formation of pure and well-crystallized BFO nanocrystallites. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was performed in order to provide information on Fe cation arrangement in the BiFeO3 phase. The magnetic and optical properties of properties of BFO samples were characterized by SQUID magnetometry, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Temperature dependence of magnetization shows antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition at TN = 220 K, while below this temperature weak ferromagnetic ordering is detected.

The wood was pyrolysed, impregnated with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) sol in repeated cycles and thermally treated at 1800 degrees C in vacuum. Four specimen groups included charcoal and three groups with 1, 3 and 5 cycles of impregnation were analyzed. Flexural and compressional strength of charcoal and woodlike SiC ceramics were measured using three-point and compression testing in different directions. Experimental results showed that mechanical properties of woodceramics were improved by repeating of impregnation cycles. Porosity measurement, dilatometric analysis, XRD and SEM analysis were used to study the macroscopical and microscopical properties of the resulting biomorphic SiC ceramics. studied. The pseudo-second-order (PSO) model provided the best fit for the
kinetic data, while the intraparticle diffusion (IPD) model indicated a
pronounced influence of the porous structure on the sorption rates. The
maximum sorption capacity was found to be 84 mg g-1 and 74 % removal
efficiency was reached after 180 min in citrate buffer at pH 5.0.

AB - dThe possibility of sorption of technetium-99 in the form of pertechnetate anion (TcO(4)(-)) and the sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) from aqueous solution by chelating polymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were investigated. Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME), with different amount of the crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA), were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine (deta). We propose that nonspecific sorption of pertechnetate anion via electrostatic interactions takes place at the protonated amino groups of macroporous crosslinked copolymer. The results of batch experiments per-formed at pH 1-14 showed fast sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) by amino-functionalized PGME-deta in a wide range of pH, that is, from 1.0 to 9.0. Almost complete removal of TcO(4)(-) (91-98%) was reached within 180 min in the stated pH range (1.0-9.0), with the sorption half-times of under 25 min. The partitioning coefficients of linear adsorption isotherms, with 180-min equilibrium time, reach the high values of 2130 mL g(-1) and 1698 mL g(-1) for the two samples of synthesized PGME-deta. AB - Technetium-99 comprises a significant health risk, since edible plants can bioaccumulate and convert it to more lipophilic species that cannot be excreted through urine. Batch kinetics of pertechnetate removal from aqueous solutions by two samples of crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was investigated at the optimum pH value of 3.0, and the initial solution activity of 325 MBq dm(-3). PGME-deta was characterized by elemental analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Five kinetic models (pseudo-first, pseudo-second order, Elovich, Bangham, and intraparticle diffusion) were used to determine the best-fit equation for pertechnetate sorption. After 24 h, PGME-deta samples sorbed more than 98% of pertechnetate present, with maximum sorption capacity of 25.5 MBq g(-1), showing good potential for remediation of slightly contaminated groundwater.

AB - Two porous and one non-porous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [abbreviated PGME] were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine [abbreviated PGME-deta]. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption by PGME-deta were investigated in batch static experiments, in the temperature range 25-70 degrees C. Sorption was rapid, with the uptake capacity higher than 80% after 30 min. Sorption behavior and rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using five kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion and Bangham model). Kinetic studies showed that Cr(VI) adsorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model, with definite influence of pore diffusion. Equilibrium data was tested with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Langmuir model was the most suitable indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption. The maximum adsorption capacity from the Langmuir model, Q(max),at pH 1.8 and 25 degrees C was 143 mg g(-1) for PGME2-deta (sample with the highest amino group concentration) while at 70 degrees C Q(max) reached the high value of 198 mg g(-1). Thermodynamic parameters revealed spontaneous and endothermic nature of Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-deta. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

analyses of zeolites were performed and the FTIR-ATR spectra were recorded. The
results of physicochemical analyses are discussed in terms of unit cell (u.c.) composition.

AB - The active sites of hydrogen-exchanged Y zeolite (HY) and dealuminated (HDY) zeolites are investigated by TPD of carbon monoxide. Only the high temperature TPD spectra of CO (T(M)approximate to620-690degreesC) were observed, meaning that CO molecules interact with very strong acid sites. The amounts of CO bonded on these sites are small (less than 1 molecule per unit cell). The strong influence of dealumination on the coverage degree is found. The calculated values for kinetic parameters indicate chemisorption of CO in the investigated systems (E(des)approximate to240 kJ mol(-1), Aapproximate to10(11) s(-1)).
