AB - Poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene (PVA/Gr) nanocomposite was synthesized with the aim of developing a novel improved material. The PVA/Gr nanocomposite was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, and the interaction of PVA molecules with graphene was examined. Introduction of Gr led to improved mechanical and thermal properties of the PVA/Gr nanocomposite compared to pure PVA, as well as strong antibacterial activity against the bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus. The PVA/Gr nanocomposite was non-cytotoxic against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells by MTT assay, indicating its high potential for biomedical applications. AB - The hydroxyapatite/graphene (HAP/Gr) composite was electrodeposited on Ti using the electrophoretic deposition process to obtain uniform bioactive coating with improved mechanical strength and favorable corrosion stability in simulated body fluid (SBF). Incorporation of Gr was verified by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron analysis. The HAP/Gr composite coating exhibited reduced surface cracks, nearly double the hardness, and elastic modulus increased by almost 50% compared to pure HAP coating, as estimated by a nanoindentation test. The bioactive HAP/Gr composite coating provided a newly formed apatite layer in SBF with enhanced corrosion stability, as evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the HAP/Gr coating was improved in comparison to the pure HAP coating, and the Ca/P ratio was closer to the stoichiometric value. No antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli could be verified. The HAP/Gr composite coating was classified as non-cytotoxic when tested against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Silver/poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Ag/PVP) nanocomposites containing Ag nanoparticles at different concentrations were synthesized using gamma-irradiation. Cytotoxicity of the obtained nanocomposites was determined by MU assay in monolayer cultures of normal human immunocompetent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) that were either non-stimulated or stimulated to proliferate by mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA), as well as in human cervix adenocarcinoma cell (HeLa) cultures. Silver release kinetics and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were investigated under bioreactor conditions in the simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C. The release of silver was monitored under static conditions, and in two types of bioreactors: perfusion bioreactors and a bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion simulating in vivo conditions in articular cartilage. Ag/PVP nanocomposites exhibited slight cytotoxic effects against PBMC at the estimated concentration of 0.4 mu mol dm(-3), with negligible variations observed amongst different cell cultures investigated. Studies of the silver release kinetics indicated internal diffusion as the rate limiting step, determined by statistically comparable results obtained at all investigated conditions. However, silver release rate was slightly higher in the bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion as compared to the other two systems indicating the influence of dynamic compression. Modelling of silver release kinetics revealed potentials for optimization of Ag/PVP nanocomposites for particular applications as wound dressings or soft tissue implants. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. AB - Composite coatings based on lignin, obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on titanium, were investigated. The aim of this work was to produce hydroxyapatite/lignin (HAP/Lig) coatings on titanium and to investigate the effect of the lignin concentration on microstructure, morphology, phase composition, thermal behavior and cytotoxicity of the HAP/Lig coatings. An organosolv lignin was used for the production of the composite coatings studied in this research. The properties of HAP/Lig coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as the MTT test of cytotoxicity. The results showed that higher lignin concentrations protected the HAP lattice during sintering, thereby improving the stability of the HAP/Lig coatings. The cell survival of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) after proliferation indicates that the HAP/Lig coating with 1 wt% Lig electrodeposited on titanium was non-toxic with significant promise as a potential bone-repair material.
