AB - Nanomaterials based on metal–doped fluorapatite (FAP) have attracted considerable interest as potential next–generation antimicrobial agents. In this study, Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by a neutralization method at room temperature. Their structural, optical, antimicrobial, and hemcompatible properties have been investigated. XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption studies indicate the formation of single–phase FAP mesoporous nanopowders, composed of rod–like particles. TEM images confirmed the formation of nanorodes with a length of 60 nm and a width of about 18 nm. Rietveld analysis shows that the Cu2+ ions preferentially substitute Ca2 (6 h) sites in the hexagonal fluorapatite crystal structure. Fluorescence spectroscopy accompanied by MCR–ALS method confirms substitution of Cu2+ ions in FAP crystal lattice with extracting additional d–d band transition at green color from FAP broadband self–activated luminescence in violet–blue color. Antimicrobial studies conducted on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus lysodeikticus showed that FAP nanopowder with the highest Cu2+ content have strong bacteriostatic action on Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain in mediums containing nutrition matters. In addition, this sample in comparison to pure FAP achieved a high percentage of relative reduction of bacterial population for all three species, being >90% in most cases. Fungistatic action is noticed too, throwgh the slowing down mycelium growth of fungus Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium roqueforti and reduction of sporulation of Aspergillus niger species. Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals shows a synergistic antimicrobial effect with Cu2+ and F− ions. Concerning the potential biomedical applications, the hemolysis ratios of the Cu2+–doped FAP samples were below 5%. The obtained results pointed out the possible use of the synthesized nanocrystals as broad–spectrum antimicrobial agents for various biomedical and health care preparations.

AB - The textile industry is one of the major pollutants of waterbodies with effluents high in biochemical and chemical oxygen demand values, high values of total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and low dissolved oxygen values along with strong color. The existence of a successful method for its decontamination would be beneficial. In this work, we synthesized sponge-like europium oxide (Eu2O3) using a template-directed route from carbon hollow spheres, obtained from glucose as a carbon source. The material synthesis method was done in an aqueous environment, without using any organic solvents. Electrochemical properties of the synthesized material were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrical impedance spectroscopy, while morphological characterization was done using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Eu2O3 were successfully immobilized at the surface of a screen-printed carbon electrode (Eu2O3/SPCE) using the drop-casting method. Finally, the prepared electrodes were tested toward the removal of Reactive Blue 52 (RB52) using electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). Important parameters, that is, the supporting electrolyte, its concentration, pH value, and the applied voltage, were optimized for RB52 degradation. The rate of removal was monitored spectrophotometrically and by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). It was found that the proposed approach reaches complete decolorization of the RB52 solution after a 60-min treatment, at pH 5.6 of KCl supporting electrolyte at a concentration of 0.05 M. Under optimal parameters, after 3 h of treatment, total organic carbon (TOC) was lowered by ~40%. The obtained results indicate that the proposed method may find potential application in EAOPs, considering electrode stability, durability, and efficiency and simplicity of the method.

AB - The toxicity of hybrid nanoparticles, consisting of non-toxic components, zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs), and caffeic acid (CA), was examined against four different cell lines (HTR-8 SV/Neo, JEG-3, JAR, and HeLa). Stable aqueous ZrO2 sol, synthesized by forced hydrolysis, consists of 3–4 nm in size primary particles organized in 30–60 nm in size snowflake-like particles, as determined by transmission electron microscopy and direct light scattering measurements. The surface modification of ZrO2 NPs with CA leads to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex followed by the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral range. The spectroscopic observations are complemented with the density functional theory calculations using a cluster model. The ZrO2 NPs and CA are non-toxic against four different cell lines in investigated concentration range. Also, ZrO2 NPs promote the proliferation of HTR-8 SV/Neo, JAR, and HeLa cells. On the other hand, hybrid ZrO2/CA NPs induced a significant reduction of the viability of the JEG-3 cells (39 %) for the high concentration of components (1.6 mM ZrO2 and 0.4 mM CA).

AB - In this study, carbon cryogel was used as solid-phase extraction sorbent for the extraction of estrogenic hormones (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol) from water solution.
The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized by choosing an appropriate mass of the sorbent, volume, and initial pH of estrogenic hormone water solution, as well as by choosing an appropriate organic solvent. The concentration of tested hormones after extraction was measured by liquid
chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Based on the obtained hormone recoveries, the following optimal conditions of the SPE procedure were chosen: 100 cm3
of hormone water
solution at initial pH adjusted to 7, 20 mg of the sorbent, the methanol-dichloromethane mixture was
used for hormone elution. Recoveries obtained under the optimal conditions ranged from 77 % for
estrone, to 86 % for 17β-estradiol, with relative standard deviation from 7,4 to 18 %.

AB - This paper outlines the production of an inorganic polymer/geopolymer using a metakaolin by an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean technology to conserve natural environment and resources. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of geopolymerization of metakaolin is investigated. Also, process of aging time of geopolymer is followed by several analytical methods. The structure of metakaolin and metakaolin based geopolymers and their physicochemical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and after 28 days scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was applied for the surface characterization of the samples. A shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X (X=Al, Si, Na...) bands as the molarity of activator increasing during geopolymerization process was observed by FTIR. Mass spectra of geopolymers were characterized by MALDI TOF mass spectrometer. Structural reorganization of geopolymer samples occurs during the curing/aging in accordance with a geopolymerization mechanism.

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB - Natural filtration material tuff (T) was modified by coating with nano-sized magnetite. The grain fraction of 0.6–1.9 mm was submitted to hydrothermal synthesis of magnetite. Thus formed magnetite modified tuff (MMT) was characterized in terms of Fe-content, N2 adsorption- desorption isotherm, SEM, zeta potential-pH analyses and adsorption behavior towards phosphates/arsenates in batch and column conditions. Elemental analysis showed that 36.54 mg g−1 of magnetite was attached to the porous tuff grains. This modification changed pore structure and specific surface area. An increase of cca 35% in Sp value was obtained. Batch experiments proved that MMT was 4-5 times more efficient in removal of phosphates/arsenates than non-modified T. The maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation were 0.45 and 1.91 mg g−1, while those for arsenate were 0.551 m g−1 and 2.36 mg g−1 for T and MMT, respectively. The intra-particle diffusion model was the most suited for describing the adsorption process of phosphate and arsenate onto MMT. Fixed-bed column data corroborated batch results, i.e. MMT was 6 times superior in contaminant adsorption than T. Modification with magnetite improved T potential for usage in water treatment applications: its filtration ability remained unchanged, while adsorption capacity for phosphates/arsenates removal was improved. © 2019 The Society of Powder Technology Japan

AB - Natural and acid-activated sepiolites, functionalized by covalent grafting of [3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl]trimethoxy-silane were used as adsorbents for the removal of an anionic Reactive Orange 16 dye from aqueous solutions. The influence of initial pH (pHi) on the adsorption was first investigated in comparison with the adsorption onto unmodified sepiolites; then the dye removal process by modified samples was subjected to kinetic and equilibrium studies at pHi = 2.0 or 5.0, at different temperatures. Results showed that the adsorption of dye was favorable at lower pHi and at higher temperatures, in terms of adsorption capacity and rate of adsorption. The binding sites on the adsorbents surfaces were considered to be protonated amine groups, which play a role in the electrostatic interactions with the dye anions at pHi = 2.0. Formation of hydrogen bonds between hydrogen from amine groups and oxygen from the dye and van der Waals forces were proposed as the mechanisms of adsorption at pHi = 5.0. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted to the pseudo-second- order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were well correlated with the Sips isotherm. The adsorption capacity of both modified sepiolites was much higher than of the parent samples, whereas the capacity of the functionalized acid-activated sepiolite was higher (~172 mg/g) than of the functionalized natural sepiolite (~158 mg/g) at 298 K, pHi 5.0.

AB - TiO2/carbon composite (TiO2/HTC), synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization, was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction. The possibility of using TiO2/HTC as photocatalysts for UV and visible light assisted degradation of methylene blue inaqueous solution was examined. It was found that carbon presence in TiO2/HTC leads to the higher porosity and increase in the share of photocatalytically active anatase phase. Compared to the hydrothermally synthesized TiO2, TiO2/HTC showed the superior photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation. In addition, TiO2/HTC show high recycling ability with degradation ratio of methylene blue higher than 81% after five cycles. Also, TiO2/HTC is expected to be a promising candidate for photocatalytic processes using visible light.

AB - Geopolymeric binders (GB) were produced using fly ash (FA) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The slag has been added in the range of 0-40%. The effects of slag content on the strength, microstructure and thermal resistance were evaluated. It was found that the amount of EAFS up to 30% positively affects the strength evolution of GB. The main reaction product of FA/EAFS blends was amorphous N-(C)-A-S-H gel along with geopolymer-type gel (N-A-S-H). Thermal resistance of GB was considered from the standpoint of their mechanical and dimensional stability after heating in the temperature interval of 600800 C. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of GB after heating are attributed to the changes in their structure. The results have shown that EAFS negatively affects the thermal resistance of GB above 600 degrees C due to the phase transition and morphological transformation of the amorphous gel phase. AB - The influences of temperature and time on sintering behaviour of nanosized HAP powder were investigate in this paper. The calcium hydroxyapatite powder, with the average crystallite size of 34 +/- 1 nm, was uniaxially pressed at a pressure of 500 MPa. Obtained green compacts were sintered at temperature ranging from 1000 degrees C to 1200 degrees C in air atmosphere at various times. According to the results of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray and FTIR analyses, it is shown that HAP compacts with dense microstructure and average grain size below 250 nm is obtained.

AB - The aim of this work is the investigation of alpha-tricalcium-phosphate (alpha-TCP) formation from calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHAP), synthesized by hydrothermal method from CaCl2, EDTA, NaH2PO4 center dot 2H(2)O and urea as precursors at 160 degrees C. Further, the influence of Ca/P ratios in the starting solution on alpha-TCP formation and the settings of obtained cements in simulated body fluid (SBF) were investigated. According to the results of X-ray, FTIR and SEM analyses, it is shown that CDHAP is transformed to beta-TCP at 800 degrees C, and to alpha-TCP at 1200 degrees C. Almost complete transformation of CDHAP into alpha-TCP occur after heating at 1500 degrees C in the case when Ca/P ratio in starting solution was 1,42. Cement powder mixed with the cement liquid (2.5 wt.% solution of Na2HPO4) completely hydrolyzes after 7 days in SBF, forming only CDHAP phase.
