AB - Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of plant hormones that play important roles in regulating various physiological and developmental processes in plants. One of the most effective BRs involved in modulating crop growth is 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL). The effects of different concentrations of 24-EBL on various biochemical and biophysical parameters critical to early growth stages and seedling development were investigated using two maize hybrids, ‘ZP 434’ (a new-generation hybrid) and ‘ZP 704’ (an older-generation hybrid). The evaluation of results is based on measurements of germination percentage, morphometric parameters, redox status, comparative analysis of thermodynamic parameters (such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy), and the concentration of specific sugars in different parts of maize seedlings. The results indicate that the germination and initial growth of maize seedlings are influenced by the flow of crucial sugars from the remaining seed (as a source of nutrients) towards the plumule and radicle (as sink organs). Furthermore, alterations in Gibbs free energy play a significant role in these sugar transfers within the maize seedlings. The seed germination was most affected by the highest concentrations of 24-EBL, showing inhibitory effects, whereas lower and moderate concentrations of exogenously added 24-EBL exhibited a beneficial influence on the initial phases of seedling growth. The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.

AB - Taking into account the importance of distribution and transfer of radionuclides in the soil–plant system, especially in agricultural fields, the aim of this research was assessment of radioactivity contribution and transfer characteristics of natural radionuclides in agroecosystem. The measurement of the natural radioactivity distribution was conducted in organic and sustainable farming management systems. Statistical evaluation of the physical and chemical properties of soils subjected to different farming systems, revealed the existence of differences in some parameters. Balanced distribution of natural radionuclides in soil-crop system was observed. Radionuclide 40K was the most accessible to the investigated crops via uptake from the soil, then 232Th and 226Ra. The obtained results are useful for understanding the behavior of the radionuclides and provide an insight into the cumulative deposition of radioactivity in the agroecosystem.

AB - Concerning the particular nutritive value of honeydew honey compared to blossom honey, and small number of studies defining botanical origin of honeydew honey, comprehensive analysis of phenolic profile of 64 honeydew honey samples of specific botanical origin was performed. Two advanced techniques of liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry were used for identification of a total of 52 compounds and quantification of 25 of them. Pattern recognition analysis applied on data on phenolic compounds content confirmed that quercetin, naringenin, caffeoylquinic acid, hydroxyphenylacetic acid, apigenin and genistein, could be considered as potential markers of botanical origin of honeydew honey. Spectroscopic and electrochemical approaches were applied for the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity. Quercus sps. samples, Quercus frainetto and Quercus ilex, showed high biological activity and specific chemical composition. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry profiles were used for characterization and natural clustering of honeydew honey for the first time. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) is plant steroid hormone that can regulate several physiological effects in plants, including promotion of cell growth and induction of heat stress tolerance. The purpose of this work is to investigate the influence of various concentrations of 24-EBL on the dehydration mechanism of seedlings of two maize hybrids (ZP434 and ZP704). Control and treated samples were subjected to isothermal conditions for dehydration processes. The effects of carbohydrates and mineral contents on the possible changes in the dehydration mechanism (from kinetics standpoint) were investigated. Comparing control samples to samples treated with 24-EBL, it was found that different dehydration mechanisms exist. The differences arise from the influence of 24-EBL, that causes a significant increase of phosphorus values for ZP704, whilst the reverse was identified for ZP434. It was assumed that the plumule sensitivity to dehydration stress originates from the interaction of water with primary amino groups as cations in polyamines, for lower concentrations of 24-EBL. It was found that the temperature variation (105–130 °C) leads to situations where trehalose does not arrive fast enough to “replace the water” because its handicap to binds (by hydrogen bonds) to biomolecules instead of water. It was found that 24-EBL cause changes of carbohydrates properties, which are important for the defense mechanism from environmental stresses. © 2018 SAAB

AB - Propolis, as a beneficial natural product, has found application in the food and pharmaceutical industries as a food preservative, active packaging material as well as a main component of propolis containing products. Quality control of propolis has thus gained in importance. We used simple, fast, and low-cost techniques such as UV/Vis spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry applied in combination with principal component analysis to confirm the presence of two botanical sub-types of propolis. Cyclic voltammetry, as a green, sensitive, and convenient technique suitable for investigation of chemical profile, together with multivariate chemometrics technique, was used for the first time for characterization and classification of propolis. UV/Vis spectroscopy was applied in two aspects, absorption at certain wavelength for the quantitative determination of analytes, i.e. determination of quality control parameters, and spectral profiles, for the confirmation of the existence of two botanically different poplar types. All investigated Serbian propolis samples were characterized with specific chemical patterns and were classified in two main botanical varieties, so-called orange and blue. The results confirmed that the applied methods have a potential to be used for the discrimination of complex natural products such as propolis.
