AB - The essence of this study is synthesis of a newly developed and efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on aluminum oxide support promoted with potassium iodide (KI) as active dopant responsible for pronounced catalyst activity. Modified sol–gel, reflux and hydrothermal method were used for synthesis of aluminum-oxide support using aluminum isopropoxide as a precursor. The γ-Al2O3 support and KI/γ-Al2O3 catalyst samples were examined by various experimental techniques. Effects of several operational parameters were considered and those are: methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, catalyst loadings, reaction time and reaction stirring rate. The obtained results indicated that modified sol–gel method for synthesis of γ-Al2O3 catalyst support is the most favorable for obtaining the catalyst with superior catalytic performances in transesterification of sunflower oil. A maximum conversion (triglycerides to methyl esters) of 99.99% was achieved using the SG-KI/γ-Al2O3-770 catalyst under following optimal process parameters: 15:1 methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, 2.5 wt% catalysts loading, 600 rpm stirring rate and 4 h of the reaction run.

AB - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs–Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR’s indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

AB - The aim of the present study is to investigate the performances of hemp block made of hemp shives and CaO binder (lime). In order to improve the performances of cono block, a selection of particle size from 1 mm to 40 mm of hemp shiv was made. The optimization of the mass ratios of the components was also done. The results show that there is a positive effect of reducing the dimensions of the hemp shiv particles on the mechanical properties of the formed cono block. Also, there is a significant influence of the mass ratio of the components on the mechanical properties of the obtained cono blocks.

AB - Cigarette waste in the form of cigarette butts is one of the most common forms of waste in the world. It contains more than 5,000 toxic ingredients and chemicals that pose a serious risk to the health of wildlife, humans and marine and freshwater organisms. Billions of cigarettes are produced worldwide every year, resulting in the accumulation of tons of toxic waste. Depending on the environmental conditions and weather conditions, cellulose acetate filters can take up to 10 years to completely decompose, during which time heavy metals and toxic chemicals are constantly released into the environment. Although possible methods of disposing of collected cigarette butts include incineration and landfilling, techniques can result in the release of hazardous fumes and can be expensive. Treatment and recycling of cigarette butts and their conversion into different materials could be a potential solution to the resulting environmental pollution. Until the publication of this review, there are several studies and papers on cigarette recycling with encouraging results and a number of them have been studied methods, including recycling cigarette butts in asphalt concrete and baked brick, as a carbon source, sound-absorbing material, corrosion inhibitor, biofilm carrier and many others.

presence of HCA, reaction yield of I3
- was found to increase in following
order p-cumaric < chlorogenic ≤ caffeic acid. This is attributing to their oxyradical
scavenging activity. Results obtained in this study have showed
correlation between antioxidant activities of HCA and their ability to
enhanced I3
- production.

AB - Enhancement of the electrocatalytic effect of Ni electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by co-electrodeposited V and Co at metallic Ni (Ni-V-Co) was studied by using quasi-potentiostatic polarization technique from 1 M KOH at 25 ºC. The obtained exchange current density for HER with Ni-V-Co electrode, (5.5x10-4 Acm-2), is about two orders of magnitude higher than for metallic Ni electrode. The results suggested the existence of the synergetic effect of V and Co deposit on the catalytic activity of Ni electrode for HER. By using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis the presence of Co and V at metallic Ni support was proved.
