AB - This paper describes the structural and optical properties of Cu-Se thin films. The surface morphology of thin films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Formation of Cu-Se thin films is concluded to proceed unevenly, in the form of islands which later grew into agglomerates. The structural characterization of Cu-Se thin film was investigated using X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD). The presence of two-phase system is observed. One is the solid solution of Cu in Se and the other is low-pressure modification of CuSe2. The Raman spectroscopy was used to identify and quantify the individual phases present in the Cu-Se films. Red shift and asymmetry of Raman mode characteristic for CuSe2 enable us to estimate nanocrystal dimension. In the analysis of the far infrared reflection spectra, numerical model for calculating the reflectivity coefficient of layered system, which includes film with nanocrystalite inclusions (modeled by Maxwell -Garnett approximation) and substrate, has been applied. AB - Dysprosium (Dy3+ ions) doped YAG nanopowders were prepared by the solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method and undoped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) single crystal was grown by the Czochralski technique. The structure of the prepared materials has been confirmed and characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. PL spectra were acquired using Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) excitation tuned at 350 nm. Several emission bands in Dy3+ emission spectrum were observed in the blue (470-500 nm), yellow (560-600 nm), red (660-685 nm) and infra-red (750-780 nm) regions, corresponding to F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2), F-4(9/2)-H-6(13/2), F-4(9/2)-H-6(11/2), F-4(9/2)-(H-6(9/2) + H-6(11/2)) transitions in the 4f levels of Dy3+ ions, respectively. By using the Commission Internationale de lEclairage (CIE) chromaticity diagram of emission spectra it has been shown that this material can be used as a source of a white light. The result of lifetime analysis of the F-4(9/2) level in dysprosium ion has been reported, as well. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of calcium hydroxyapatite particles, stabilized with poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) / poly(ethylene-vinyl versatate) (PEVA/PEVV) are presented. The particles were synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method using PEVA/PEVV as a surface-active substance. The structure and crystallinity of the obtained powder were investigated by X-ray diffraction, TEM and HRTEM. The phase identification of hydroxyapatite stabilized with PEVA/PEVV was done by FTIR, while the surface morphology, as well as the size and shape of particles were studied by TEM and AFM. Finally, using MTT and LDH release assays to assess mitochondrial activity and cell membrane integrity, it was confirmed that so synthesized hydroxyapatite powder was not toxic to L929 cells.

AB - The role of the process of designing a scaffold in bone tissue engineering is to provide optimal conditions for new bone tissue growth. The primary concern of such engineering is to create an adequate nanotopology of the scaffold inner walls, which can initiate the growth and activity of bone cells. Here, we present a completely new scaffold designing process based on a biomimetic approach in order to improve the nanostructure of pore walls of previously-made calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA) porous scaffolds. CHA porous scaffolds were covered with different polymer thin films (alginate, cellulose and PLGA) and exposed to simulated body fluid (SBF) for 42 days. SBF induced in situ formation of bone-like apatite phases on the surface of CHA/polymer composites. Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the biomimetically-assembled phase is CHA of slightly shifted stoichiometry. X-ray diffraction confirmed that CHA is self-assembled on the surface of all investigated thin films. The calculation of crystallite sizes showed small differences in the degree of crystallinity between different samples. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a dominant blow-ball morphology of CHA particles (size 1 - 5 mu m) with nano-sized branches on their surfaces.

AB - Titanium alloys have found numerous applications in space research, and nuclear industry and research. Since X-rays constitute an important part of the space radiation environment, numerical simulations of radiation absorption characteristics of titanium alloys were studied in this paper. The photon transport Monte Carlo software was used for determining the energy deposited in titanium samples. The numerical results show the pronounced dependence of radiation absorption properties of different combinations of components in alloy. The results obtained are encouraging in respect of optimization of structure of alloys regarding their required features in radiation shielding.

AB - A key role of hsp90 in the activity of various oncogenic proteins and pathways is currently of intense interest. To clarify the molecular basis of biological behaviour of colorectal cancers we analysed the expression characteristics of hsp90 in cytosolic, nuclear and plasma membranous fractions of cancer cells. As determined by Western blot assay all hsp90 isoforms studied, a (84 kDa), 8 (86 kDa) and hsp90N (75 kDa), were up-regulated and differentially expressed in various stages of colorectal carcinoma. The inducible hsp90 alpha isoform is a component of invasive phenotype of cancer cells thus pointing to the importance of hsp90 alpha for metastasis generation. The expression of hsp90 beta is definitely higher in poorly-differentiated carcinomas than in well-differentiated cancers, suggesting an involvement of hsp90 beta in the inhibition of cancer cell differentiation. Especially, the expression of cytosolic hsp90N isoform in malignant cells points to the possibility that induction or overexpression of hsp90N might be causally related to tumour formation. Hsp90N is the plasma-membrane-associated protein in poorly-differentiated colorectal cancers with metastasis. This suggests that the expression of hsp90N is elevated with progressive dedifferentiation often associated with advanced cancer stages. Hsp90 was exclusively localized in the invasive front in a majority of metastatic cancers as visualized by immunohistochemical study. Consistent with these facts, the frequent expression of hsp90 alpha and hsp90N on the surface of colorectal cancer cells may enable hsp90 to act as a mediator of metastasis generation. The above results indicate more complex roles for hsp90 in colorectal tumourigenesis. In this way, the hsp90 would be at the crossroads of both signalling and cell migration events.

abstract = "A key role of hsp90 in the activity of various oncogenic proteins and pathways is currently of intense interest. AB - CdZnTe detectors have been employed in diagnostic X-ray spectroscopy. This paper presents the Monte Carlo calculation of X-ray deposited energy in a CdZnTe detector for different energies of photon beam. In incident photon direction, the distribution of absorbed dose as deposited energy in detector is determined, Based on the dependence of the detector response on the thickness and different Zn fractions, some conclusions about changes of the material characteristics could be drawn. Results of numerical simulation suggest that the CdZnTe detector could be suitable for X-ray low energy.

AB - The use of semiconductor materials in radiation processing, radiation therapy and diagnostics, and detection of cosmic radiation motivated development of numerical methods for its radiological characterization. This paper presents the application of the Monte Carlo method using the FOTELP-2K4 code for radiological characterization of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) dosimeter. The advantages of MOSFET dosimeters include small size, immediate readout, and ease of use for a wide photon energy range. In order to determine the dosimeter response accurately, distribution of the absorbed dose in the MOSFET structure has been investigated. Our results show that the absorbed dose distribution calculated by the presented simulation model compares well with the published data.
