AB - This paper presents an exact analytical solution of 2D transient temperature, caused by a non-periodical pulse heating of a cylindrical two-layer slab. The corresponding partial differential equations are solved step-by-step, using the separation of variables technique. Analytical/computational procedure for eigenvalue derivation is considered separately. General initial assumptions, such as existence of thermal contact resistance, thermal conduction and diffusion anisotropy, radiative heat losses, non-uniform heating, and finite absorption depth are accounted in the solution. Numerical simulations of temperature distribution throughout the sample are given at the end of the paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The paper presents a description of the two-dimensional flash method for measuring the thermal diffusivity of deposited thin solid films and coatings, including the possibility of determination of the thermal contact resistance and the thermal anisotropy of the film or coating. Giving an analytical solution of the transient temperature as the consequence of transient two-dimensional heat conduction through the sample, the paper describes the estimation possibilities for the thermal diffusivity and thermal contact resistance, as well as for other typically unknown parameters of the model. Particular attention was given to the influence of known parameters on the estimation possibilities of unknown parameters. With such a study, essential information for the modeling of the experiment is provided. The experimental setups and demonstration of the proposed data reduction procedure are presented at the end of the paper. Having different estimation possibilities for measuring different locations of the sample, the results suggest using the data of several transient temperatures for more reliable and accurate simultaneous estimation of the thermal diffusivity and thermal contact resistance of deposited thin films and coatings.

AB - This paper proposes a technique for estimation of thermal contact resistance between two opaque solids. The laser flash method combined with an inverse approach based on the Gauss parameter estimation procedure is used. The analytical solution of the model of double-layer sample is given and the data reduction procedure is briefly described. Estimation possibilities of thermal contact resistance and other parameters of the model are analyzed. Particular attention is given to the influence of known parameter uncertainties. The estimation procedure is tested using simulated experimental data. New types of diagram are used to present and analyze the results. Results and discussion are given at the end of the paper.
