AB - In this paper, NiZnCo ferrite was produced by solid state synthesis, calcination at 1000 °C and sintering at 1250 °C in air atmosphere. The microstructure and phases of the sintered sample were analysed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The magnetic properties of the ferrite were evaluated by magnetization and magnetostriction measurements. The complex magnetic permeability and complex permittivity were also measured between 1 MHz-12 GHz and the reflection loss (RL) was calculated in the 100 MHz-12 GHz frequency range. The results show that the ferrite sample presents magnetostrictive behaviour and a saturation magnetization of 71 Am2/kg. Complex permittivity measurements indicate that the material has dielectric behaviour in the whole frequency range studied, with ε′ varying between 7-40, and magnetic behaviour in frequencies between 1 MHz-5 GHz. The minimum RL was found at frequencies between 2.4-3.3 GHz and the calculated RL value for a thickness of 3 mm was lower than −10 dB in frequencies between 2.3-7.3 GHz. These results indicate potential application as microwave absorber in the S band.

AB - A visible-light-responsive hybrid material was prepared by surface-modification of γ-Al2O3, an insulator with a bandgap of about 8.7 eV, with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), leading to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex. The microstructural characterization of pristine γ-Al2O3 includes X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The pristine γ-Al2O3 powder consists of agglomerated rod-like nanoparticles ((2-3) × (15-20) nm, diameter × length) with the large specific surface area (~420 m2/g). An enormous absorption red-shift is observed upon the formation of the ICT complex. The absorption onset of the inorganic-organic hybrid was found to be at 730 nm by diffuse reflection spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of prepared samples was thoroughly tested using the decolorization of the organic dye crystal violet (CV) under illumination in different spectral regions and different light intensities. Excitation with UV light leads to complete decolorization of CV, while the degradation kinetics are impeded when a visible light source is used. Also, the increase of UV light intensity induced significantly faster degradation kinetics of CV, while the degradation rates of CV are quite insensitive to the increase of visible light intensity.

AB - Boron carbide (B4C) has attracted great attention as a semiconducting material with excellent properties and has found various technological applications. High hardness value makes it a potentially superhard material as well as a low density, high degree of chemical inertness, high melting temperature, thermal stability, abrasion resistance, and excellent neutron absorption, contributed to the use of boron carbide as an abrasive material for extreme conditions, wear resistance components, body armors and as a nuclear absorber or solid-state neutron detector. However, B4C is known for its unusual structure, bonding, and substitutional disordering whose nature is not yet fully understood, and exhibits brittle impact behavior. In this study we investigated the chain-model structure with an arrangement of 12-boron atom icosahedra and linear 3-carbon atom chains, using available experimental data. We employed the DFT method with LDA and GGA- PBE functional, as implemented in the CRYSTAL17 software package. Electronic properties of boron carbide have been investigated by calculating the density of states (DOS) and band structure. Calculated mechanical properties have been investigated: bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young modulus, Poisson’s ratio, hardness, and elastic tensor constants, and compared with available experimental data.

AB - A glassy carbon electrode was functionalized by MoO2 nanoparticle–decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and examined as a working electrode in oxyfluorfen (OXY) detection by differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPSV). Measurement parameters were as follows: initial potential − 0.1 V, end potential + 0.5 V, accumulation potential − 0.15 V, accumulation time 80 s, and scan rate 50 mV s−1. A stripping potential of + 0.315 V vs. Ag/AgCl was employed. The pPesticide oxyfluorfen was determined in model samples by DPSV with good reproducibility (RSD <2.4%) in the concentration range 2.5 to 34.5 ng mL−1, with r = 0.99 and a limit of detection of 1.5 ng mL−1. These results are in the same range as those of HPLC/DAD, which is used as the comparative method. Recovery for OXY determination in a real river water sample was 102%. Analyses in Briton-Robinson buffer has shown to be pH dependent with the best response at pH 6.0. Structural characterization of MoO2-MWCNT by Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray crystallography revealed a preserved MWCNT structure decorated with firmly attached clusters of MoO2 nanoparticles.

AB - The synthesis route by solution combustion, a glycine nitrate procedure (GNP) of CoMoO4 nanopowders by a glycine as a fuel and as a complexant was examined concerning the photocatalytic aspects and powder characteristics. The synthesized samples were investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Ultraviolet-Visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption method. In this work, we presented a simple and effective method for controlling the composition and morphology of CoMoO4. A single-phase a and 13 crystalline form of CoMoO4 compound was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalytic activity of CoMoO4 nanopowders was estimated by the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet in aqueous solution. In addition, the obtained specific CoMoO4 nanopowder demonstrated acceptable specific surface area, which can be of particular importance for the photocatalytic processes.

AB - Spider silk fibers, collected from Pholcus Phalangioides spider were used as a template for obtaining magnesium oxide (MgO, periclase) as well as magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2, brucite) fibers. Magnesium oxide fibers were obtained in a simple manner by heat induced decomposition of magnesium salt (MgCl2) in the presence of the spider silk fibers, while magnesium hydroxidefibers were synthesized by hydration of MgO fibers at 50 °C, 70°C and 90 °C, for 48 and 96 h. According to Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dimensions of spider silk fibers determined the dimension of synthesized MgO fibers, while for Mg(OH)2 fibers, the average diameter was increased with prolonging the hydration period. The surface of Mg(OH)2 fibers was noticed to be covered with brucite in a form of plates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that MgO fibers were single-phased (the pure magnesium oxide fibers were obtained), while Mg(OH)2 fibers were two- or single-phased brucite depending on incubation period, and/or incubation temperature.

abstract = "Spider silk fibers, collected from Pholcus Phalangioides spider were used as a template for obtaining magnesium oxide (MgO, periclase) as well as magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2, brucite) fibers. AB - Three types of functional ceramic composites were designed, synthesized and probed for effective sulfide removal from aqueous solutions. The main goal was to examine complex influence of graphite, surpluses of Fe (similar to 4%) and micro-additions of Cu (similar to 0.2%) on the functional features of the composites. The structural, textural, morphological and surface characteristics of the composites were examined in detail by XRD, nitrogen sorption, SEM and FTIR. It has been shown that all composites are solid heterogeneous systems containing amorphous and crystalline phases (graphite, hematite, montmorillonite, quartz, etc.) with pronounced redox activity in contact with sulfide aqueous solutions. Great enhancment of sulfide consumption was detected for composites which contained graphite and it was established that reaction kinetics is fitted to irreversible second-order batch reaction with two reactants. After the treatment of 1 mM S2- solution, using composite dossage of 1 g/dm(3), concentration dropped down to 0.02 mM. In addition, cyclic voltammetry at 50 mV/s revealed the key role of dopants in electrochemical aspect of the process. Obvious boost of S2- uptake is ascribed to numerous electrochemical, chemical and sorption processes on the composite's developed surface.

AB - Spider dragline silk was coated with pure as well as Eu-doped ceria nanopowders at the room temperature. The treatment was done by immersion of the spider silkmesh into aqueous solutions of cerium nitrate (Ce(NO3)(3)) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH). Depending on the relationship between Ce3+ ion and ammonium hydroxide concentration, coated fibers exhibited a different thickness. Obtained materials were studied by means of FESEM. It was found that ceria nanoparticles of average size of 3 nm were coated along spider thread. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed crystal nature of nanoparticle coating of spider silk. By using Williamson-Hall plots, crystallite size and strain were estimated. EDS measurement confirmed the presence of Eu in spider-Eu-doped ceria composite, and according to FTIR analysis, the interaction between CeO2 and spider silk was proposed. The morphology of obtained composite was observed by TEM. The photoluminescence emission spectra of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria were measured with two different excitations of 385 and 466 nm. The two-photon excited auto-fluorescence of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria was detected using a nonlinear laser scanning microscope. Obtained composite has a potential as a fluorescent labeling material in diverse applications.

AB - Titania based catalyst and TiO2 doped with zirconia were prepared by modified sol-gel method. The synthesized catalysts samples were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM and FTIR techniques. Photocatalytic activity was tested in the reaction of crystal violet (CV) dye decolorization/decomposition under UV light irradiation. The effect of several operational parameters, such as catalyst dosage, initial dye concentrations, duration of UV irradiation treatment and number of reaction cycles were also considered. The obtained results indicated faster dye decolorization with the increase of the catalyst amount and a decrease of initial CV concentrations. An influence of doping with zirconia on the physico-chemical properties of bare titania was studied. The doping procedure had affected photocatalytic properties of the final catalytic material, and had improved photocatalytic performances of doped catalyst on crystal violet decolorization/degradation in comparison to bare titania.

AB - Nanosized Mg-doped ceria powders were obtained by self-propagating room temperature reaction without using surfactants or templates. X-ray diffraction analysis and field emission scanning microscopy results showed that the doped samples are solid solutions with fluorite-type structure and spherical morphology. Raman spectra revealed an increase in the amount of oxygen vacancies with the increase of Mg concentration. This increasing results in a narrowing of the bandgap of CeO2. The photocatalytic performances of the Mg-doped ceria solid solutions were evaluated by decomposing an organic dye, crystal violet under UV irradiation. The Mg-doped ceria solid solutions exhibit significantly better photocatalytic activity than the pure CeO2 and commercial TiO2. The higher first rate constant of the Mg-doped samples demonstrated that they are much more efficient than TiO2 and CeO2 under UV light. Mg2+ dopant ions and oxygen vacancies play a significant role in the enhancement of photocatalytic performances of the Mg-doped ceria.

AB - Simple route was used for synthesis of nanostructured titania samples doped with 3 and 6 mol% of Cr3+ Titanium(IV)-isopropoxide and water were used as starting materials and as an agents for controlling hydrolysis and condensation reactions. The phase evolution of titania (TiO2) was followed by calcination at 400, 600 and 800 degrees C. The synthesized powders were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Single-phase anatase was obtained at low temperature (400 degrees C) in all cases. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 doped nanopowders was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet in aqueous solution. The present study indicates that this simple synthesis method can be an effective route to produce efficient photoactive doped anatase nanopowders. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Samples of natural peat (NP) were hydrothermally treated at different temperatures in oxidative and acidic aqueous medium to tailor their acid-base, adsorption, morphological and other properties. The obtained materials were thoroughly characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques, followed by determination of pH(pzc), examination of adsorption characteristics and the extent of organic matter leaching in water. Acid-base characteristics of these materials were examined by potentiometric and conductometric titration of corresponding aqueous suspensions. Experimental potentiometric data were interpreted using ProtoFit software (NEM, non-electrostatic model) which provided pKa values and concentrations of surface sites which are compared with corresponding values obtained by conductometric titration method. There are two main types of surface groups (carboxylic and phenolic) that are dominant in the materials and determine their acid-base behavior in the aqueous medium. Temperature during oxidative hydrothermal treatment has no significant effect on the total number of surface groups, but influences the ratio of carboxylic and phenol-type groups. Hence, acid-base properties of peat can be tailored, which is useful in designing and improving adsorptive characteristics of peat for the preferential removal of certain pollutants from water.

AB - Magnesium-orthotitanate (Mg2TiO4) nano-powder was synthesized using a Pechini-type polymerized complex route. Microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms indicated that well-crystallized Mg2TiO4 nanoparticles are small in size (about 10 nm) with large specific surface area (72 m(2) g(-1)). The surface modification of Mg2TiO4 nano-powders with 5-amino salicylic acid and catechol induced a significant shift of absorption to the visible spectral region due to charge transfer complex formation. It should be emphasized that tunable optical properties of Mg2TiO4 nano-powders have never been reported in the literature. Degradation reactions of an organic dye (crystal violet) were used to test the photocatalytic ability of pristine and surface-modified Mg2TiO4 nano-powders under illumination in different spectral regions. Excitation with UV light indicated, for the first time, photocatalytic ability of Mg2TiO4. Also, improved photocatalytic performance of surface-modified Mg2TiO4 nano-powders was found in comparison to unmodified ones.

AB - In this study, modified sol-gel method was employed to synthesize the pure and Zr-doped titania catalysts. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was applied to determine porosity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to study crystal structure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate morphology and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to examine surface properties/total acidity of the obtained catalysts samples. Photocatalytic activity was tested in the reaction of crystal violet (CV) dye decolourization/degradation under UV light irradiation. The effects of several photocatalysis operational parameters were considered, such as catalyst dosage, initial dye concentrations, duration of UV irradiation treatment, as well as catalysts calcination temperatures and dopant amounts. The obtained results indicated faster dye decolourization/degradation with the increase of the catalyst dosage and the decrease of initial CV concentrations. The Zr-doping affects photocatalytic properties, i.e. CV decolourization/degradation of the prepared catalytic materials. Thus, addition of 5 wt.% of ZrO2 to titania increases photocatalytic effect for similar to 15% and addition of 10 wt.% of ZrO2 improves the photocatalytic efficiency of titania for nearly 30%.

The synthesized mesoporous TiO2 films were characterized using SEM/TEM, BET and XRD techniques. Degradation reactions of methylene blue and crystal violet dyes were used to test the photocatalytic capability of mesoporous TiO2 films. The degradation kinetics of methylene blue and crystal violet were investigated over a broad range of initial concentrations of the organic dyes. The kinetic data were correlated with the specific surface area and thickness of mesoporous TiO2 films, as well as number of reaction cycles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - We have performed a crystal structure prediction study of CaMnO3 focusing on structures generated by octahedral tilting according to group-subgroup relations from the ideal perovskite type (Pm (3) over barm), which is the aristotype of the experimentally known CaMnO3 compound in the Pnma space group. Furthermore, additional structure candidates have been obtained using data mining. For each of the structure candidates, a local optimization on the ab initio level using density-functional theory (LDA, hybrid B3LYP) and the Hartree--Fock (HF) method was performed, and we find that several of the modifications may be experimentally accessible. In the high-pressure regime, we identify a post-perovskite phase in the CaIrO3 type, not previously observed in CaMnO3. Similarly, calculations at effective negative pressure predict a phase transition from the orthorhombic perovskite to an ilmenite-type (FeTiO3) modification of CaMnO3.

AB - Nanocrystalline TiO2 films were prepared on glass slides by the dip coating technique using colloidal solutions consisting of 4.5 nm particles as a precursor. Photoirradiation of nanocrystalline TiO2 film modified with alanine that covalently binds to the surface of TiO2 and at the same time chelate silver ions induced formation of metallic silver film. Optical and morphological properties of thin silver films on nanocrystalline TiO2 support were studied by absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Improvement of photocatalytic performance of nanocrystalline TiO2 films after deposition of silver was observed in degradation reaction of crystal violet. Antimicrobial ability of deposited silver films on nanocrystalline TiO2 support was tested in dark as a function of time against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The silver films ensured maximum cells reduction of both bacteria, while the fungi reduction reached satisfactory 98.45% after 24 h of contact. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - A resorcinol-formaldehyde carbon cryogel was prepared, characterized and used for the removal of the commonly used herbicide clopyralid from aqueous solutions under varying experimental conditions. The carbon exhibited a relatively high specific surface area, significant mesoporosity and an amorphous structure. The following isotherm models were used to interpret the equilibrium data: the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Jovanovic, Hurkins-Jura and the Helsey Model. Several models fitted the data well although the calculated values for q(max) poorly correlated with the experimentally obtained data. The pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, the models of Elovich, Bangham and the intraparticle diffusion model were employed for fitting the kinetic data. The rate of the process was fast at the beginning, although the adsorption equilibrium was not attained before 24 h. The adsorption was found to be pH dependent and favored in acidic solutions.

AB - Nanostructured compounds with general formula Ca1-xYxMnO3 (0 LT = x LT = 1) were synthesized by modified glycine nitrate procedure. In the next step, we have investigated crystal structure and microstructure of the synthesized samples using X-ray methods and Rietveld analysis. Focus of this research was the structural stability of the yttrium-doped CaMnO3 perovskite phases, which crystallize in orthorhombic space group Pnma. We observed that the unit cell volumes of the investigated compounds increase proportionally with yttrium amount. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of yttrium amount on Mn-O bond angles and distances, tilting of MnO6 octahedra and deformation due to the presence of Jahn-Teller distortion around Mn3+ cation. In order to estimate effective coordination of A and B sites, bond valence calculations (BVC) were performed for A and B site cations. Finally, the photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) method was applied in order to follow yttrium concentration in the perovskite phases.

AB - An application of coatings composed of mixed (hydr)oxides over bentonite particles in aqueous suspension, in narrow range of pH, has been proven as a useful method for obtaining bentonite based composite with a developed, specific surface area and pronounced adsorption features toward cationic pollutants. This paper deals with detailed characterization of structure as well as textural and adsorption properties of bentonite based composite. The structure of the composite was examined by using XRD technique providing results that confirm changes in orientation of layered quasi-crystalline particles of montmorillonite, which is the most common component of bentonite clay. Surface area and pore volumes were determined by N-2 adsorption at -196 degrees C using BET, t-plot, alpha(s)-plot, Dubinin Radushkevich and Dolli-more Heal method. The results have revealed that the specific surface area for composite is about two times higher than for starting bentonite. Moreover, modification of bentonite leads to significant changes in the meso- and microporosity. Adsorption properties of the composite were studied by analyzing the adsorption of dye methylene blue which was used in this study as a model of cationic pollutant in water. The most prominent role in the mechanism of dye molecules retention on the surface, interlayers and in the pores of the adsorbent is ascribed to establishing of electrostatic, van der Waals and hydrogen bonds. The shape of adsorption isotherm indicates that methylene blue can be adsorbed onto composite in more than one layer. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

AB - Zirconia-based catalysts were promoted by acid functions (sulfate and phosphate anions) and tested in order to establish catalyst efficiency in test reaction of n-hexane isomerization. The impact of surface and structural properties on the final catalytic performance is also investigated. It is proven that well-established balance between total catalyst acidity, acidic surface density and crystal phase nano-structure determines the catalytic activity in the reaction towards isomerized products. Type of acidic promoter strongly affects the resulted catalytic act. This stands for pyrosylfate groups in sulfated zirconia catalysts and orthophosphate groups in phosphated zirconia catalysts both essential in the favorable reaction run.
