AB - In addition to providing a sustainable route to green alternative energy and chemical supplies from a cheap and abundant carbon source, recycling CO2 offers an excellent way to reduce net anthropogenic global CO2 emissions. This can be achieved via catalysis on 2D materials. These materials are atomically thin and have unique electrical and catalytic properties compared to bigger nanoparticles and conventional bulk catalysts, opening a new arena in catalysis. This paper examines the efficacy of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) lattices with vacancy defects for CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR). We conducted in-depth investigations on different CO2RR electrocatalytic reaction pathways on various h-BN vacancy sites using a computational hydrogen model (CHE). It was shown that CO binds to h-BN vacancies sufficiently to ensure additional electron transfer processes, leading to higher-order reduction products. For mono-atomic defects VN (removed nitrogen), the electrochemical path of (H+ + e−) pair transfers that would lead to the formation of methanol is most favorable with a limiting potential of 1.21 V. In contrast, the reaction pathways via VB (removed boron) imposes much higher thermodynamic barriers for the formation of all relevant species. With a divacancy VBN, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) would be the most probable process due to the low rate-determining barrier of 0.69 eV. On the tetravacancy defects VB3N the pathways toward the formation of both CH4 and CH3OH impose a limiting potential of 0.85 V. At the same time, the HER is suppressed by requiring much higher energy (2.15 eV). Modeling the edges of h-BN reveals that N-terminated zigzag conformation would impose the same limiting potential for the formation of methanol and methane (1.73 V), simultaneously suppressing the HER (3.47 V). At variance, the armchair conformation favors the HER, with a rate-determining barrier of 1.70 eV. Hence, according to our calculations, VB3N and VN are the most appropriate vacancy defects for catalyzing CO2 electroreduction reactions.

AB - Interest in developing micro/nano motors (MNMs) increased rapidly in the last couple of years. These advanced systems can address critical challenges in manipulation of objects at small-scales. Micro/nano motors are capable to move controllably in fluids under the influence of various stimuli (thermal, magnetic, light, etc.) and perform specific operations, including propelling micromachines. Here we synthesized two types of hybrid Janus particles, Au-TiO2 and AgAg2S-TiO2, and tested them as possible light-driven micromotors. Light, as a versatile power source, allows non-invasive control of the motion of the motors with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Illumination induce asymmetric reactions on the two sides of the Janus particles, which can create the propulsion. To optimize the properties of the MNMs, we performed synchrotron radiation gas-phase photoemission spectroscopy (SR PES) of the free standing hybrid particles at synchrotron SOLEIL, France. SR PES provided an information about the valence level alignment of the components, possible hybrid states and dominant scattering processes.

AB - This article reports on photodielectric properties of hydrocolloids of TiO2 particles and Au/TiO2 hybrid particles of lateral dimension of ∼200 nm. Illumination of the colloids with visible light did not cause measurable changes in their electrical conductivity, while the application of UV (365 nm) light led to photoinduced increase in conductivity of up to 2%. The photogeneration of ions in water, regardless of the presence of the particles, makes a dominant contribution to the photoinduced increase in conductivity of the colloids

AB - Graphene quantum dots, zero-dimensional form of graphene, have a band gap that can be controlled by changing their size, shape, edge morphology, number of layers etc. Moreover, they have various edge terminations that can be physically/chemically functionalized for numerous applications in nano electronics, biosensors, supercapacitors, and nanomedicine. In the present study, we hydrothermally synthesized nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQD), using simple, fast synthetic route and eco-friendly chemicals, such as citric acid and urea (amine group-rich). The obtained NGQD were physically functionalized by L-phenylalanine, aromatic amino acid with interesting fluorescent properties. The hybrid NGQD-LPhe samples were characterized with UV/Vis, Raman, ATR Fourier transformed infra-red and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies, while their morphologies were studied by using atomic force microscopy. This work created a base for future investigations on graphene/biomolecules hybrids and their applications in fields of bioimaging and drug delivery. In addition, the experimental results were supported by DFT calculations of non-covalent stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions between NGQD and biomolecules.

AB - Anthocyanins are water-soluble, non-toxic flavonoid pigments, which produce the blue, red and purple color of many plants. Color change of anthocyanin extracts is a direct consequence of the transformation of their chemical structure when exposed to different pH conditions. Optical properties investigated in UV-Vis absorption and PL spectra show a clear difference between anthocyanins in acidic and in alkaline environments. Chitosan, a natural-based, non-toxic and biodegradable polysaccharide, is chosen as an ideal matrix for nanocomposites. It is proven to be a good carrier for anthocyanins, because of its ability to entrap the indicator dyes and at the same time the ability to release anthocyanins when in contact with an acidic environment. In this research, we have developed anthocyanin-enhanced biopolymer indicator systems, which provide fast colorimetric response to alterations in pH levels of the environment. Transmittance spectra of nanocomposites show excellent light-blocking properties of the films. This opens up possibilities for advancement in future technology of smart biodegradable food packaging biomaterials. The availability of innovative and healthy materials reduces the need for using synthetic plastic in the modern food industry.

AB - We report on hydrothermal synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) hexagonal microrods and microtubes. Zinc oxide seeds were deposited onto glass slides by dip coating and used as templates for hydrothermal growth of ZnO microcrystals. The process was carried out in an alkaline reaction medium with acetate and nitrate zinc precursors, using hexamethylene tetramine (HMT) as surfactant. The obtained ZnO microrods were successfully decorated with silver particles via dipping ZnO-containing glass slides in silver nitrate solution and subsequent UV irradiation (5 min). Zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO microparticles were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD. The presented results are part of the larger concept of developing of anisotropic Ag/ZnO microrods for conversion of chemical to mechanical energy.

Zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO microparticles were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD. The presented results are part of the larger concept of developing of anisotropic Ag/ZnO microrods for conversion of chemical to mechanical energy.",

AB - Nitrogen-functionalized graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal transformation of glycine precursors in glycerol. Functionalization of GQDs with nitrogen was confirmed with FTIR spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the thickness of the quantum dots is around similar to 1 nm while the lateral dimensions are in the range from 20 to 80 nm. N-GQDs exhibit strong fluorescence in the blue (420 nm) region and they are suitable for bioimaging applications.

AB - In this work, we present the magnetic and structural properties of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis method. XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the samples consist of single-phase α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. A microstructural analysis by TEM and SEM shows: (i) irregular nanoparticles (∼50 nm), (ii) plate-like nanoparticles (with thickness t∼10 nm and diameter d∼50–80 nm) and (iii) microsized ellipsoid 3D superstructures (with length l∼3.5 and diameter d∼1.5 μm) composed of nanosized building blocks (∼50 nm). We used circularity, elongation and convexity measures to quantitatively analyze the shape of the particles. Irregular hematite nanoparticles were synthesized using a water solution of ferric precursor and sodium acetate during the hydrothermal reaction (reaction conditions: T = 180 °C, t = 12 h). The same hydrothermal reaction temperature, reaction duration and ferric precursor (without sodium acetate) were used for synthesizing hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructures. Addition of urea and glycine surfactants in hydrothermal reaction resulted in the formation of nanoplate hematite particles. The role of these surfactants on the structure and morphology of the particles was also investigated. Magnetic measurements at the room temperature displayed a wide range of coercivities, from H C = 73 Oe for irregular nanoparticles, H C = 689 Oe for nanoplates to H C = 2688 Oe for hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructures. The measured coercivity for the ellipsoid superstructure was about 35 times higher than in the case of irregular hematite nanoparticles and about 4 times than the coercivity of hematite nanoplates. Magnetic properties of synthesized samples were related to their structure and morphology. We conclude that shape anisotropy influenced enhancement of the coercivity in hematite nanoplates whereas hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructure (nanoparticle clusters) induced the formation of multidomain magnetic structure and highest coercivity revealing its superior structure for enhanced magnetic properties. The synthesized hematite nanoparticle structures exhibit low cytotoxicity levels on the human lung fibroblasts (MRC5) cell line demonstrating a safe use of these nanoparticles for practical applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - We report on glycine-free and glycine-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of microsized superstructures composed of self-assembled hematite nanoparticles. An X-ray powder diffraction measurements of the samples confirm good crystallization of the hematite nanoparticles with hydrothermal reaction time-dependent crystallite sizes in a range from ∼15 nm (45 h) to ∼26 nm (90 h). The FTIR and Raman spectroscopy confirm hematite structure, whereas TEM measurements reveal nanoparticle sub-units (subparticles). The computational analyses of particle shape show that the addition of glycine surfactant in hydrothermal reaction leads to more spherical shape of hematite hierarchical structures and smaller sizes. We found strong coercivity increases (up to ∼3 times) in the samples synthesized in the presence of glycine. The coercivity values from HC = 1305 Oe (mushroom-like shape synthesized by glycine-free hydrothermal reaction) to HC = 3725 Oe (sphere-like shape synthesized by glycine-assisted hydrothermal reaction) were obtained at 300 K. These results and their comparison with other described in the literature (e.g. bulk, wires, urchin-like, rods, tubes, plates, star-like, dendrites, platelets, irregular, nanocolumns, spindles, disks hematites, etc.) reveal that the hematite superstructures possess good magnetic properties. We propose that the glycine, oriented subparticles, exchange and dipole-dipole interactions may play an important role in the development of magnetic properties.

AB - The aim of this study is to evaluate the size and stability of radiolytically produced silver clusters. The clusters obtained by the gamma irradiation of a mixture of a silver salt and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were studied both theoretically and by mass spectrometry. MALDI TOF mass spectrometry of the Ag-n clusters showed the presence of clusters containing between 5 and 29 atoms. Both the theoretical and experimental results of this paper show that the most stable clusters are small clusters with an odd number of atoms. The stability of these clusters is correlated with the clusters electronic configuration. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - A primer is a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for DNA
synthesis. DNA, as a large molecule, is very difficult for analysis by means of mass
spectrometry. However, primer, as a short sequence of nucleic acid, is much more
convinient for e.g. MALDI TOF MS analysis. Mass spectrometric experiment
resulted in quality MALDI TOF spectra of 3 primers. Compound 3-HPA (3-
hydroxypicolinic acid) showed the best results as matrix. AFM studies were also
conducted, for both pure primer samples and hybrids of primer molecule with
single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT). Thus, obtained functionalisation of SWNT
with DNA primers was confirmed by AFM imaging. AFM images clearly showed
wrapping of DNA structures around nanotube „template“. Functionalisation of
SWNT is very important for potential applications of nanotubes in biomedical
field. MALDI TOF mass spectrometry, in combination with AFM imaging, proved
its great potential in analysis of short DNA sequences, and indicated the possibility
of investigating more complex DNA structures.

abstract = "A primer is a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for DNA
Functionalisation of
SWNT is very important for potential applications of nanotubes in biomedical
field. MALDI TOF mass spectrometry, in combination with AFM imaging, proved
its great potential in analysis of short DNA sequences, and indicated the possibility
of investigating more complex DNA structures.",

AB - Collagens, one of the most abundant on the Earth, are family of proteins which constitute the basis of connective tissue (extracellular matrix) in multicellular organisms. We used collagen type II from bovine Achilles tendon. In further work, collagen has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Using TEM we successfully obtained images of collagen and whole collagen fibrils. Using AFM we captured images of whole collagen as well as images of fragments from collagenase-treated collagen (it was digested with collagenase from Clostridium histolycium). AFM images of collagenase-treated collagen showed many fibrils grouping into large bundles – collagen fiber. Based on obtained images we studied surface morphology, shape and length of fragments from collagenase-treated collagen.

AB - Collagen is the most frequently occuring fibrillar protein in mammals, which can be found in cartilage, tendon, bone, ligament, skin, etc. The structure of collagen is based on a complicated helix structure of single chains of amino acids (most abundant is glicine-Gly, proline-Pro and hydroxyproline-Hyp) which are connected by hydrogen bonds. We tried to establish MALDI method to get better resolution of collagen’s mass spectra. Digested collagen (type II from bovine Achilles tendon which was digested with collagenase from Clostridium histolycium) has been analysed on MALDI-TOF MS in order to find peptide’s fragments that are characteristic for collagen. In mass spetra we found peaks of peptides, which is highly indicative for collagen (GlyPro-Hyp, Gly-Pro-Asp, Gly-Pro-Glu ect.) We hope that it should be possible to obtain MS analysis and structure characterization of collagen by MALDI-TOF/TOF in future.

AB - Bone is composed of two phases. The organic phase is made of collagen fibrils assembled in broad fibers acting as a template for mineralization. The mineral phase comprises hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals grown between and inside the collagen fibers. We have developed a material using functionalized carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers and glasy carbon as scaffold to initiate in vitro mineralization. Mentioned carbon materials are functionalized with carboxylic groups prior to decorating. All samples were dispersed in ultra-pure water and incubated for 2 weeks in a synthetic body fluid with dispersed HAP, in order to induce the calcification of the functionalized carbon materials. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmision electron microscopy (TEM) showed that Ca2+ and PO4 3- ions were deposited as round-shaped nodules. Raman spectroscopic studies confirmed the HAP formation, and image analysis made on TEM pictures showed that HAP were packed around and inside the carbon materials together. All three types of investigated carbon materials leading to successful calcification of collagen. This suggests that it takes the presence of carbon materials to prevent it from calcification of collagen, independent of the structures of the material.

AB - In this study we performed the dynamic and static scintigraphy of the domestic dog, using the newly synthesized radiopharmaceutical, [Tc-99m(CO)(3)(H2O)(3)]-C-60(OH)(22-24). In the current study, an advanced one-step method for the functionalization of fullerenol by Tc-99m is described. Optical properties of as-prepared samples and the mechanism responsible for the functionalization were investigated using UV-VIS and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. Also, the presence of the Tc complex on fullerenol was confirmed by using the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, HPLC and MALDI TOF techniques. This simple and effective method of producing a new radiopharmaceutical is of interest not only for its application in various areas of technology and biology, but also for investigating its potential use in radiation technology for nanoengineering of materials. With dynamic scintigraphy, performed during 30 minutes (120 frames, 15 sec per frame), we obtained ratios of heart, liver and spleen counts: 222/249/168; 178/320/217; 120/348/239 respectively. By static scintigraphy after 1 hour, we detected the activity in heart, liver, spleen and intestines. After 4 hours, the radiopharmaceutical activity was detected in salivary glands. The detection after 21 hours showed the activity in kidneys and urinary bladder, while the activity in intestines was absent. After 24 hours, we detected the activity in liver, spleen, kidneys and urinary bladder. Pharmacokinetic investigations performed in this study are of key interest for the further fullerenol in vivo research.

AB - In this study, we analysed pellets from long-eared owls (Asio otus) collected from four localities in Belgrade (Serbia). The pellets contained the remains of prey, namely voles (Arvicola terrestris) and field mice (Apodemus agrarius). The concentrations of 14 elements (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Zn, Sr, Ba, Mn, Ti, Cu, Si, B) were evaluated in whole pellets and in samples containing only bone tissue, which were dissected from the whole pellet. The increased levels of certain elements, including Mn, Zn, Ba, Cu and radioactive K-40, indicate contamination of the soil by various sources, such as industrial plants and agricultural practices. From the results presented in this article, we suggest that the analysis of owl pellets may indicate the quality of the local environment.

AB - In this paper, an advanced method of one-step functionalization of single and multi walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs) using gamma-irradiation was described. Two synthesis procedures, related with different reduction species, were employed. For the first time, poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA is successfully utilized as a source to reduce silver (Ag) metal ions without having any additional reducing agents to obtain Ag nanoparticles on CNTs. The decoration of carbon nanotubes with Ag nanoparticles takes place through anchoring of (PVA) on nanotubes surface. Optical properties of as-prepared samples and mechanism responsible for the functionalization of carbon nanotubes were investigated using UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. Decorated carbon nanotubes were visualized using microscopic techniques: transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Also, the presence of Ag on the nanotubes was confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. This simple and effective method of making a carbon nanotube type of composites is of interest not only for an application in various areas of technology and biology, but for investigation of the potential of radiation technology for nanoengineering of materials. AB - Silver clusters were produced by two different synthesis procedures, related with
different reduction species. PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) was successfully utilized as a
source to reduce silver (Ag) metal ions without using any additional reducing
agents to obtain Ag clusters. Silver clusters with atoms numbering 5-29 are
registered through mass spectrometry using MALDI TOF and MALDI TOF/TOF
techniques. Analysis showed that clusters with magic numbers are the largest,
while those with an odd number of atoms are larger than clusters with an even
number of atoms. Stability of these molecules, magic number actually, is in
relation with their electronic configuration.
