Nonlinear gap modes and compactons in a lattice model for spin-orbit coupled exciton-polaritons in zigzag chains

AB  - We consider a system of generalized coupled Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations, derived as a tight-binding model from the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equations describing a zigzag chain of weakly coupled condensates of exciton-polaritons with spin-orbit (TE-TM) coupling. We focus on the simplest case when the angles for the links in the zigzag chain are ±π/4 with respect to the chain axis, and the basis (Wannier) functions are cylindrically symmetric (zero orbital angular momenta). We analyze the properties of the fundamental nonlinear localized solutions, with particular interest in the discrete gap solitons appearing due to the simultaneous presence of spin–orbit coupling and zigzag geometry, opening a gap in the linear dispersion relation. In particular, their linear stability is analyzed. We also find that the linear dispersion relation becomes exactly flat at particular parameter values, and obtain corresponding compact solutions localized on two neighboring sites, with spin-up and spin-down parts π/2 out of phase at each site. The continuation of these compact modes into exponentially decaying gap modes for generic parameter values is studied numerically, and regions of stability are found to exist in the lower or upper half of the gap, depending on the type of gap modes. © 2019 The Author(s).

Numerical parametric study of chiral effects and group delays in Ω element based terahertz metamaterial

AB  - In this work, we have systematically studied the impact of geometric parameters on chiral effects which occur in metamaterial made of Ω elements. The analysis of group delays and electric field enhancements indicate stronger interaction between the structure and right circularly polarized waves. Calculations of optical activity and circular dichroism for different values of geometric parameters, allow us to deduce that the thickness of the wire and the gap size have large influence on these effects. On the other hand, the radius of the wire affects mainly the resonant frequency position which enables frequency tunability. The results indicate that multi-functional design of this chiral metamaterial offers great flexibility for various devices: enantiomeric sensors, circular polarizers and light modulators. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Terahertz chiral metamaterial based on twisted closed ring resonators`

AB  - We present a chiral metamaterial (CMM) made of periodically distributed compact elements in a form of twisted closed ring resonators designed to be operational in terahertz (THz) frequency range. We analyze the three observed resonances in the absorption spectra and electric field distribution of linearly polarized incident electromagnetic waves. It has been shown that they arise due to excitation of symmetric and antisymmetric modes and are dependent on the geometry of resonant elements as well as the periodicity of the system. For the case of incident circularly polarized waves, a phenomenon of circular dichroism was observed, and its origin and dependency on the geometrical parameters and metal and dielectric losses was examined. This study indicates that the proposed CMM has a high potential for applications in the design of different THz components.

Light propagation in binary kagome ribbons with evolving disorder

AB  - By introducing evolving disorder in the binary kagome ribbons, we study the establishment of diffusive spreading of flat band states characterized by diffractionless propagation in regular periodic ribbons. Our numerical analysis relies on controlling strength and rate of change of disorder during light propagation while tailoring binarism of the kagome ribbons in order to isolate the flat band with the gap from the rest of the ribbons eigenvalue spectrum and study systematically its influence on diffusion. We show that the flat band plays a dominant role in the establishment of the diffusion for a given strength and rate of change of disorder, whereas the rest of the ribbons eigenvalue spectrum induces only quantitative differences in the light spreading regimes. Due to the universality of studied phenomena, our findings may be of interest in various disordered physical systems with flat spectral bands, ranging from photonics to ultracold matter systems and plasmonics.

Localized gap modes in nonlinear dimerized Lieb lattices

AB  - Compact localized modes of ring type exist in many two-dimensional lattices with a flat linear band, such as the Lieb lattice. The uniform Lieb lattice is gapless, but gaps surrounding the flat band can be induced by various types of bond alternations (dimerizations) without destroying the compact linear eigenmodes. Here, we investigate the conditions under which such diffractionless modes can be formed and propagated also in the presence of a cubic on-site (Kerr) nonlinearity. For the simplest type of dimerization with a three-site unit cell, nonlinearity destroys the exact compactness, but strongly localized modes with frequencies inside the gap are still found to propagate stably for certain regimes of system parameters. By contrast, introducing a dimerization with a 12-site unit cell, compact (diffractionless) gap modes are found to exist as exact nonlinear solutions in continuation of flat band linear eigenmodes. These modes appear to be generally weakly unstable, but dynamical simulations show parameter regimes where localization would persist for propagation lengths much larger than the size of typical experimental waveguide array configurations. Our findings represent an attempt to realize conditions for full control of light propagation in photonic environments.

abstract = "Compact localized modes of ring type exist in many two-dimensional lattices with a flat linear band, such as the Lieb lattice. The uniform Lieb lattice is gapless, but gaps surrounding the flat band can be induced by various types of bond alternations (dimerizations) without destroying the compact linear eigenmodes. Here, we investigate the conditions under which such diffractionless modes can be formed and propagated also in the presence of a cubic on-site (Kerr) nonlinearity. For the simplest type of dimerization with a three-site unit cell, nonlinearity destroys the exact compactness, but strongly localized modes with frequencies inside the gap are still found to propagate stably for certain regimes of system parameters. By contrast, introducing a dimerization with a 12-site unit cell, compact (diffractionless) gap modes are found to exist as exact nonlinear solutions in continuation of flat band linear eigenmodes. These modes appear to be generally weakly unstable, but dynamical simulations show parameter regimes where localization would persist for propagation lengths much larger than the size of typical experimental waveguide array configurations. Our findings represent an attempt to realize conditions for full control of light propagation in photonic environments.",

AB  - We introduce a discrete model for binary spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a deep one-dimensional optical lattice. Two different types of the couplings are considered, with spatial derivatives acting inside each species, or between the species. The discrete system with inter-site couplings dominated by the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), while the usual hopping is negligible, emulates condensates composed of extremely heavy atoms, as well as those with opposite signs of the effective atomic masses in the two components. Stable localized composite states of miscible and immiscible types are constructed. The effect of the SOC on the immiscibility-miscibility transition in the localized complexes, which emulates the phase transition between insulating and conducting states in semiconductors, is studied.

AB  - The localized mode propagation in binary nonlinear kagome ribbons is investigated with the premise to ensure controlled light propagation through photonic lattice media. Particularity of the linear system characterized by the dispersionless flat band in the spectrum is the opening of new minigaps due to the binarism. Together with the presence of nonlinearity, this determines the guiding mode types and properties. Nonlinearity destabilizes the staggered rings found to be nondiffracting in the linear system, but can give rise to dynamically stable ringlike solutions of several types: unstaggered rings, low-power staggered rings, hour-glass-like solutions, and vortex rings with high power. The type of solutions, i.e., the energy and angular momentum circulation through the nonlinear lattice, can be controlled by suitable initial excitation of the ribbon. In addition, by controlling the system binarism various localized modes can be generated and guided through the system, owing to the opening of the minigaps in the spectrum. All these findings offer diverse technical possibilities, especially with respect to the high-speed optical communications and high-power lasers.

AB  - The aspects of light propagation through a semiconductor metamaterial (SMM) which consists of two alternating differently doped In0.53Ga0.47As layers are studied analytically and numerically. A general analytical expression for the effective index of refraction of the Poynting vector is derived for periodic structure composed of two alternating layers of absorptive and dispersive semiconductors and light propagation is simulated by finite-difference-time-domain method. Negative values of the effective refractive index with low absorption are observed in the mid-infrared frequency range. The main advantage of this design is the possibility to control the frequency region with negative effective refractive index by changing the doping densities of the layers.

AB  - U ovoj disertaciji teorijski i eksperimentalno su analizirani linearni i nelinearni efektikoji prate prostiranje vidljive laserske svetlosti kroz različite jednodimenzionalne (1D) fotonskerešetke napravljene od materijala sa zasićujućom (saturacionom) nelinearnošću, kao što je, naprimer, litijum niobat (LiNbO3). Zbog nelinearnog odziva kakvim se odlikuju ovakvi materijali,moguće je formiranje stabilnih prostornih lokalizovanih struktura na granicama između dveuniformne rešetke istih, odnosno različitih perioda, kao i unutar binarnih superrešetki, kako unelinearnom režimu, tako i u linearnom kada do lokalizacije dolazi u okolini defekta. Udoktorskoj tezi razvijeni su odgovarajući matematički modeli i primenjene različite numeričkemetode za dobijanje odgovarajućih rezultata, dok su neki od rezultata potvrđeni ieksperimentalno u nelinearnim 1D fotonskim rešetkama proizvedenim u LiNbO3. Korišćenimatematički modeli zasnovani su na sistemima spregnutih diferencno-diferencijalnih jednačina,tačnije 1D diskretnim nelinearnim Šredingerovim (Schrödinger) jednačinama sa nelinearnostimaKerovog (Kerr) i zasićujućeg tipa, dok je stabilnost dobijenih rešenja ispitivana primenommetoda linearne analize stabilnosti. Za rešavanje stacionarnih i dinamičkih jednačina izloženih utezi, korišćene su numeričke metode pod nazivom Gaus-Njutnova metoda (Gauss-Newton) iRunge-Kuta (Runge-Kutta) metoda, respektivno. Dobijeni numerički i eksperimentalni rezultatipokazuju da prisustvo defekta utiče na formiranje lokalizovanih modova kako u nelinearnom,tako i u linearnom režimu, tj. pri malim upadnim snagama nedovoljnim za ispoljavanjenelinearnog odziva sredine. Rezultati pokazuju da pored pojave linearnih lokalizovanih stanja, unelinearnom režimu dolazi do narušavanja simetrije lokalizovanih rešenja kada su ispunjeniodgovarajući uslovi. U slučaju prostiranja svetlosti kroz binarne superrešetke, rezultati ukazuju napostojanje novih tipova lokalizovanih rešenja, kao i otvaranje dodatnog procepa u zonskojstrukturi posmatrane rešetke. Pored ovoga, prikazani su i numerički rezultati dobijeni analizommeđusobnih interakcija solitonskih rešenja, kao i ispitivanjem osobina modova lokalizovanih napovršini rešetke.
AB  - In this dissertation the linear and nonlinear effects accompanying the propagationof visible laser light through a different one-dimensional (1D) photonic lattices made of materialwith a saturable nonlinearity, such as, for example, lithium niobate (LiNbO3) are bothinvestigated, theoretically and experimentally. Due to the nonlinear response of these materialsto the intensity of incident radiation, the light passing through the photonic lattice causes localchange in the refractive index, providing necessary conditions for the formation of stablelocalized spatial structures at the interfaces between two uniform lattices of the same or differentperiods, and also within the binary superlattices, in the nonlinear regime, as well as in the linearregime when the localization occurs in the vicinity of the defect. In this dissertation, appropriatemathematical models are developed and various numerical methods for obtaining the relevantresults are applied. Some of the results have been confirmed experimentally in 1D nonlinearphotonic lattices fabricated in LiNbO3. Mathematical models are based on systems of coupleddifference- differential equations, namely the 1D discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation withthe nonlinear term of Kerr and saturable type, while the stability of the obtained solutions wasinvestigated using the method of linear stability analysis. To solve stationary and dynamicequations presented in this dissertation, numerical methods such as the Gauss-Newton andRunge-Kutta methods are performed, respectively. The obtained numerical and experimentalresults show that the presence of the defect affects the formation of localized modes in thenonlinear, as well as in the linear regime, i.e. for intensities insufficient for the manifestation ofthe nonlinear response of the medium. Furthermore, the results indicate to the possibleappearance of the symmetry breaking of the mode profiles of certain nonlinear localizedsolutions when appropriate conditions are met. In the case of light propagation through binarysuperlattices, results show the emergence of new types of localized solutions and the opening ofan additional gap in the observed energy spectrum of the lattice. Additionally, numerical resultsobtained by analyzing the mutual interaction of soliton solutions, as well as examining theproperties of localized modes at the surface of the lattice, are presented as well.

Udoktorskoj tezi razvijeni su odgovarajući matematički modeli i primenjene različite numeričkemetode za dobijanje odgovarajućih rezultata, dok su neki od rezultata potvrđeni ieksperimentalno u nelinearnim 1D fotonskim rešetkama proizvedenim u LiNbO3. Korišćenimatematički modeli zasnovani su na sistemima spregnutih diferencno-diferencijalnih jednačina,tačnije 1D diskretnim nelinearnim Šredingerovim (Schrödinger) jednačinama sa nelinearnostimaKerovog (Kerr) i zasićujućeg tipa, dok je stabilnost dobijenih rešenja ispitivana primenommetoda linearne analize stabilnosti. Za rešavanje stacionarnih i dinamičkih jednačina izloženih utezi, korišćene su numeričke metode pod nazivom Gaus-Njutnova metoda (Gauss-Newton) iRunge-Kuta (Runge-Kutta) metoda, respektivno. Dobijeni numerički i eksperimentalni rezultatipokazuju da prisustvo defekta utiče na formiranje lokalizovanih modova kako u nelinearnom,tako i u linearnom režimu, tj. pri malim upadnim snagama nedovoljnim za ispoljavanjenelinearnog odziva sredine. Rezultati pokazuju da pored pojave linearnih lokalizovanih stanja, unelinearnom režimu dolazi do narušavanja simetrije lokalizovanih rešenja kada su ispunjeniodgovarajući uslovi. U slučaju prostiranja svetlosti kroz binarne superrešetke, rezultati ukazuju napostojanje novih tipova lokalizovanih rešenja, kao i otvaranje dodatnog procepa u zonskojstrukturi posmatrane rešetke. AB  - We present a comparative analysis of the tunneling times of electromagnetic (EM) waves propagating in isotropic and anisotropic media. First, suitable expressions for the tunneling times in a layered periodic material, with anisotropic properties originating from its structure, are derived, followed by numerical calculations performed for a new type of anisotropic semiconductor metamaterial. In the first case, we have considered a layered structure which contains two differently doped In0.53Ga0.47As semiconductor layers. The second structure under investigation is made of alternately placed layers of doped In0.53Ga0.47As and undoped Al0.48Ga0.52As. The investigation of the dwell time as a function of incident wave frequency has revealed the existence of two peaks, one of which may be interpreted as a consequence of anisotropy, while the other one corresponds to the peak related to the absorption and the group delay. Both of these two peaks are affected by variations of layers doping densities. Furthermore, at increased incident angles of incoming EM waves, the dwell time peak occurs at the upper boundary of the frequency interval, for which the structure exhibits negative refractive index.

AB  - The existence and stability of spatial solitons in one-dimensional binary photonic lattices with alternating spacing and a saturable defocusing type of nonlinearity are investigated. Five types of nonlinear localized structures are found to exist: two in the mini-gap in the energy spectrum and others in the regular gap. It is proved that some of them are stable in certain ranges of the system parameters. Interactions between two identical localized structures propagating parallel to each other are investigated, too. It is shown that this interaction leads to formation of different localized patterns, such as solitons, breather-like modes, and breather complexes. The interaction output depends on the power and type of interacting identical solitons, the separation between them, the width of the mini-gap, and the phase relation between the tails of interacting solitons.

AB  - We present an analysis of the influence of the Goos-Hanchen effect on tunneling times, group delay and dwell time, of electromagnetic waves propagating through an obstacle made of left-handed metamaterial embedded in a dielectric which exhibits saturable type of nonlinearity. Tunneling times in dispersive and third-order nonlinear optical metamaterials

AB  - Investigating the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in linear and nonlinear materials (with third-order nonlinearity), we derived a general expression for the dwell time valid for all linear media, as well as its relation with the group delay. The obtained results indicate that, for a nonmagnetic lossless material, the group delay reduces to the sum of the dwell time and the self-interference time. Calculations confirmed the occurrence of the Hartman effect in negative-refractive-index metamaterials (the dwell time saturates with increasing obstacle length), as well as the negative group delay in a certain spectral regime. For such structure, analytical expressions for the tunneling times and relation between the group delay and the dwell time are obtained. The electric-field distribution inside the barrier is numerically evaluated and a detailed study of the influence of nonlinearity on the spectral structures of the tunneling times is performed. It is demonstrated that intensity variation in the incident field may change the wave propagation direction, the sign of the barriers refractive index, and group delay.

AB  - Time delays for an intense transverse electric wave propagating through a slab with saturable nonlinearity are investigated. The nonlinearity is assumed in a form of the Vinetskii-Kukhtarev model, which is relevant for the slabs made of nonlinear photorefractive crystals, such as GaAs and LiNbO(3), which feature a saturable nonlinearity. The expressions for the group delay and the dwell time are derived and the relation between them is studied. It is shown that the difference between them has three different contributions. The first one corresponds to the self-interference associated with the dispersion of the medium surrounding the slab. The other two appear due to the nonlinearity of the slab and oblique incidence of the transverse electric wave. All the results are compared with the case of dielectric slabs with cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity.

Modeling of dwell time and group delay in dispersive and absorptive media

AB  - In this paper, a more general expression that describes the relationship between dwell time and group delay is derived. This expression is valid for all kinds of materials, including negative-index metamaterials (NIMs). An obstacle made of double-negative NIMs (DN-NIMs) and surrounded by a double-positive waveguide was used as a model. In the cases where the obstacle was made of left-handed materials and the surroundings were air, it has been shown that the dwell time and absorption have similar dependences on the incident wave frequency. On the other hand, group delay becomes negative in some cases. Numerical results show that an increase in the length of the obstacle leads to saturation of the dwell time and absorption, which is in accordance with the phenomenon known as the Hartman effect. Similar results were obtained for terahertz range of frequencies and for the dispersive waveguide. In this case, it is shown that there is a certain range of frequencies where group velocity is positive, whereas the phase velocity remains negative, i.e. the peak of the output pulse appears before the peak of the input pulse. Finally, the use of a model that considers an obstacle made of a lossless, non-magnetic metamaterial, with background permittivity equal to 1 and a dispersive waveguide, leads to the appearance of a new delay, called self-interference time.
