AB  - The problem of unity or disunity of the self is discussed from the point of view of various disciplines. The first part of the study concerns the notion of self-fragmentation present in Human sciences (particularly in Psychology and Cognitive sciences) and its relationship to religious views. The focus is on the narrative self and its fragmentation through narrative practices. In the second part, I examine Jacques Derrida’s work on deconstruction and its implications related to the fragmentation of the self. Deconstruction is presented in terms of formalism in Mathematics. The final part concerns the possible splitting of the conscious self of the observer in quantum mechanical (QM) experiments. Specifically, I consider the quantum mechanical interpretations of ‘splitting brain’ suggested by von Neumann and the ‘many-minds’ suggested by Albert and Loewer. © 2022, Ecozone, OAIMDD. Fluorescence microscopy and photodielectric characterization studies of the composite films of polyvinyl alcohol and tryptophan functionalized silver nanoparticles

AB  - Fluorescent nanocomposite films were prepared by solution mixing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tryptophan functionalized silver (AgTrp) nanoparticles. Synchrotron excitation deep-ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging was used to follow the distribution of AgTrp nanoparticles within the polymer matrix. Pronounced growth of dendrite-like structures in the presence of AgTrp nanoparticles was confirmed by bright field and fluorescence imaging as well as with atomic force microscopies. Both tryptophan and AgTrp nanoparticles influence thermal properties of the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that they reduce crystallinity and significantly increase the glass transition temperature of PVA (in the case of PVA-AgTrp film the Tg increases by ~20 °C). Dielectric properties of the films were studied under two different conditions (dark and illumination). The illumination with 250 nm light induces a significant increase in conductance of the PVA-AgTrp nanocomposite. The relative changes, with respect to the conductance measured in the dark, were almost ~200%.

PVDF-HFP/NKBT composite dielectrics: Perovskite particles induce the appearance of an additional dielectric relaxation process in ferroelectric polymer matrix

AB  - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz. © 2021 The Authors

Effect of hydrodynamic cavitation water treatment on Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum-sensing molecules

AB  - Hydrodynamic cavitation treatment was used for the functional inactivation of quorum-sensing lactone molecules of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Hydroxyl radicals formed as well as the shear effects during the cavitation process induced the inactivation of the signal molecules through hydrolysis reaction coupled with bacterial destruction. Concentration of two different types of homoserine lactones (HSL) molecules was tested after the treatment at various rotational speeds. It was found that the strongest effects can be achieved at speeds > 2000 rpm. This value is considered as an onset speed of dominant cavitation, and it is in agreement with literature data. The experimental trends were in agreement with the calculations based on the finite element modelling, which show a significant increase in average shear stress at higher rotational speeds. Overall, the work has demonstrated the possible effects of hydrodynamic cavitation on the quorum-sensing molecules of Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the first time. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - We report on the aerosol generation of ligand-free silver iodobismuthate (Ag-Bi-I) nanoparticles (NPs) and on in situ investigation of their electronic structure using synchrotron radiation soft X-ray aerosol photoelectron spectroscopy (XAPS). The structural and morphological characterizations revealed the aerosol to be composed of spherical rudorffite Ag3BiI6 particles, approximately 100 nm in size. The XAPS showed well-resolved signals from all expected elements (Ag, Bi, and I) and allowed estimation of the NP work function to be about 4.5 eV. The ionization energy of Ag3BiI6 NPs was determined to be 6.1 eV that is in good agreement with our calculations based on a hybrid functional approach. The presented method of production of Ag3BiI6 aerosol can prove beneficial for the future development of Ag-Bi-I-based photovoltaic materials, since it allows the deposition of Ag-Bi-I particles on large surface areas of arbitrary shape and roughness.

The data are reported for polydisperse gold aerosols formed from hydrocolloids of bare and citrate-capped primary nanoparticles. The aerosols were brought to interact with the synchrotron radiation via a high-performance aerodynamic lens system developed for this study. The electronic structure of the aerosols was elucidated by threshold photoemission spectroscopy, which showed excellent agreement with the theoretical density of states. The photoionization cross sections of isolated gold particles were derived in the ∼104 to 106 Mb range between 8 and 12 eV. We introduce a new methodology to extract all of the photoemission observables from the electron images as a function of electron energy, including photoelectron spectrum, anisotropy parameter b2, and asymmetry parameter, α(E), which describes the shadowing asymmetry along the radiation propagation axis. The results show that electron energy distribution depends on the procedure used in the synthesis of the nanoparticles and on the ligand concentration. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter on electron energy along the valence band is rationalized through theoretical modeling in terms of the electric field distribution inside the particle and the losses due to inelastic scattering.

AB  - Flexible and transparent substrate materials were fabricated by using bacterial cellulose (BC), silk fibroin protein (SF) and/or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The BC-SF and BC-SF-PVA films obtained were further modified by impregnation with silver nanocubes (AgNC). The influences of the silver nanocubes and white light illumination on the electric and viscoelastic properties of the films were investigated. Complex conductivity measurements showed that the films with PVA component are more sensitive to light exposure and there is an increase in conductance when the sample is illuminated. The films that contained silver nanocubes showed higher values of specific susceptance than their unmodified counterparts. DMA analyses revealed that the storage shear moduli of the films increase with addition of silver nanocubes. It was also found that the relaxation transition observed at elevated temperatures in the BC-SF-PVA-AgNC films is highly sensitive to the light exposure. Above the glass transition of PVA, both storage- and loss-shear moduli change dramatically if the sample is illuminated during the measurements with respect to the case when it was kept in the dark. © 2018

AB  - The interaction of partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO) and Huh7.5.1 liver cancer cells was investigated by means of DUV fluorescence bioimaging. The prGO sample was obtained by the reduction (to a certain extent) of the initially prepared graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with hydrazine. The fluorescence of the GO nanosheets increases with time of the reduction due to a change in ratio of the sp2 and sp3 carbon sites and the prGO sample was extracted from the dispersion after 6 min, when the intensity of the fluorescence reached its maximum. The reduction process was left to proceed further to saturation until highly reduced graphene oxide (denoted here as rGO) was obtained. GO, prGO and rGO samples were investigated by structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (STEM-EDS)) and spectroscopic (UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), Raman) methods. After that, Huh7.5.1 cells were incubated with GO, prGO and rGO nanosheets and used in bioimaging studies, which were performed on DISCO beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. It was found that the prGO significantly enhanced the fluorescence of the cells and increased the intensity of the signal by ~2.5 times. Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy experiments showed that fluorescence dynamics strongly depends on the type of nanosheets used. The obtained prGO nanostructure can be easily conjugated with aromatic ring containing drugs, which opens a possibility for its applications in fluorescence microscopy monitored drug delivery. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB  - The influence of the mechanical activation of ZnO nanoparticle fillers on the structural and electrical properties of the matrix of poly(vinylidenefluoride)-ZnO (PVDF-ZnO) films was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed that mechanical activation in a high energy planetary ball mill reduces the size of ZnO particles. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that PVDF crystallized predominantly as the γ-phase. Non-activated ZnO filler reduces the degree of the crystallinity of the matrix and promotes crystallization of α-phase of PVDF in the film, while the fillers activated for 5 and 10 min induce crystallization of β-phase, indicating that mechanical activation of the filler can be used as a general method for fabrication of PVDF composites with increased content of piezoelectric β-phase crystals. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements show that polymer composite with the high content of β-phase (with ZnO filler activated for 5 min) exhibits the highest value of dielectric permittivity in 150-400 K range of temperatures. Kinetic analysis shows combined effects of increased surface area and increased concentration of surface defects on the interactions between polymer chains and activated nanoparticles. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Generation of photo charge in poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2-anthocyanin modified papers conditioned at different humidities

AB  - The article describes the influence of humidity on the surface photodielectric properties of papers prepared from poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2 hanoparticles-anthocyanin modified cellulose fibres. The anthocyanins were extracted from purple cabbage, beet-root, plum peel, red wine and red currant juice. The samples were conditioned to various relative humidities (from 9 to 100%) and illuminated with white visible light, lambda GT = 405 nm. The poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2-anthocyanin modified samples showed similar photodielectric behaviour that can be clearly distinguished from the samples modified solely with poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2. Generally, an increase in humidity enhances the conductivity of the samples and induces an increase in the amount of photo-induced charge. Also, at higher humidities (above 80%), the samples with anthocyanin showed significantly higher values of photo-induced charges with respect to anthocyanin free samples. The presented results suggest that the presence of water molecules promotes electron-injection processes from the anthocyanin to the semiconductor surface. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2-anthocyanin modified samples showed similar photodielectric behaviour that can be clearly distinguished from the samples modified solely with poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2. Generally, an increase in humidity enhances the conductivity of the samples and induces an increase in the amount of photo-induced charge. Also, at higher humidities (above 80%), the samples with anthocyanin showed significantly higher values of photo-induced charges with respect to anthocyanin free samples. The presented results suggest that the presence of water molecules promotes electron-injection processes from the anthocyanin to the semiconductor surface. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Interaction of amino acid-functionalized silver nanoparticles and Candida albicans polymorphs: A deep-UV fluorescence imaging study

AB  - The interaction of the tryptophan functionalized Ag nanoparticles and live Candida albicans cells was studied by synchrotron excitation deep-ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging at the DISCO beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL. DUV imaging showed that incubation of the fungus with functionalized nanoparticles results in significant increase in the fluorescence signal. The analysis of the images revealed that the interaction of the nanoparticles with (pseudo)hyphae polymorphs of the diploid fungus was less pronounced than in the case of yeast cells or budding spores. The changes in the intensity of the fluorescence signals of the cells after incubation were followed in [327-353 nm] and [370-410 nm] spectral ranges that correspond to the fluorescence of tryptophan in non-polar and polar environment, respectively. As a consequence of the environmental sensitivity of the silver-tryptophan fluorescent nanoprobe, we were able to determine the possible accumulation sites of the nanoparticles. The analysis of the intensity decay kinetics showed that the photobleaching effects were more pronounced in the case of the functionalized nanoparticle treated cells. The results of time-integrated emission in the mentioned spectral ranges suggested that the nanoparticles penetrate the cells, but that the majority of the nanoparticles attach to the cells surfaces. ATR-FTIR study of the interaction of CO2 with bacterial cellulose-based membranes

AB  - Bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as an active material for fabrication of the membrane for CO2 capture. The BC-membrane is further modified with silk fibroin protein and ZnO nanoparticles in order to increase the number of sites that may bind CO2. The interaction of the CO2 with the membranes was investigated by means of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The argon purged membranes were used as the control samples. After pressurizing the membranes in CO2 at 3 bar, FTIR spectra were recorded and compared to the spectra of the controls. The interaction of the membrane materials with CO2 were studied by examining two regions of the spectra: 740-610 cm (1) (bending vibrations of CO2) and 2400- 2320 cm (1) (asymmetric stretching vibrations of CO2). The envelope of the bending mode peak in 740-610 cm (1) region is resolved into particular peaks and the appearance of the additional line at 654 cm (1) suggested that the absorption bands of CO2 alters because of the Lewis acid- base type of interaction with membranes. The changes in the region of asymmetric stretching vibrations of CO2 were even more pronounced after pressurization. The presence of the number of different sites (active groups) for the CO2 adsorption reflected in the appearance of several additional asymmetric stretching peaks. Also, due to the entrapment of the CO2 in the membrane, a typical C=O asymmetric stretching vibration line at similar to 2340 cm (1) is shifted towards lower frequencies. The analysis of the results suggested that there is a strong interaction of CO2 with BC membrane, which is additionally improved by its modification with silk fibroin and ZnO nanoparticles. From the results of CO2 permeation experiment, the basic BC membrane, silk fibroin- modified BC membrane and ZnO nanoparticles- modified BC membrane exhibited the CO2 permeability of 2.73, 2.69 and 2.66 Barrer, respectively. AB  - Fluorescent nanostructures were prepared by functionalization of gold nanoparticles with riboflavin molecules and used as probes for synchrotron radiation deep ultraviolet (SR-DUV) fluorescence imaging of gluteraldehyde-fixed Candida albicans cells. The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical spectroscopy techniques. The TEM analysis showed that the nanostructures were 6 nm in diameter, while the results of the fluorescence spectroscopies confirmed the photoluminescence of the nanoparticles. The SR-DUV imaging showed that it was possible to distinguish the fluorescence of the nanoparticles from the autofluorescence of the cells, as well as that the local maxima of the signal pertaining to the fluorescence of goldriboflavin nanostructures were mostly positioned on the surfaces of the C. albicans cells of spherical morphology.

AB  - Ethylene-co-vinyl acetate/iron nanocomposite films were fabricated by implantation with multiple charged ions at different fluencies. The films obtained with ion fluency of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2) were used for specific studies. It was found that spherical similar to 1.5 nm diameter nanoparticles were formed upon implantation. They were clustered into a single 80 nm wide strip about 40 nm beneath the film surface. The magnetic measurements of the film showed that the particles exhibit superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature below 5K. A second type of the samples was also prepared with ion fluency of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2), but prior to implantation, the iron was evaporated onto the co-polymer surface. A nanocomposite film of different morphology was obtained upon the implantation and the particles were much smaller (-0.8 nm). AB  - The investigation of the interaction of silver nanoparticles and live bacteria cells is of particular importance for understanding and controlling their bactericidal properties. In this study, the process of internalization of silver nanoparticles in Escherichia coli cells was followed by means of synchrotron excitation deep ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging. Antimicrobial nanostructures that can absorb and emit light in the UV region were prepared by functionalization of silver nanoparticles with tryptophan amino acid and used as environmentally sensitive fluorescent probes. The nanostructures were characterized by morphological (TEM) and spectroscopic methods (UV-vis, FTIR, XPS, and photoluminescence). The TEM images and the analyses of the UV-vis spectra suggested that the addition of tryptophan led to the formation of hybrid nanostructures with pronounced eccentricity and larger sizes with respect to that of the initial silver nanoparticles. The DUV imaging showed that it was possible to distinguish the fluorescent signal pertaining to silver-tryptophan nanostructures from the autofluorescence of the bacteria. The spatial resolution of the fluorescence images was 154 nm which was sufficient to perform analyses of the accumulation of the nanostructures within a single bacterium. The DUV imaging results imply that the tryptophan-functionalized silver nanoparticles interact with cell membranes via insertion of the amino acid into the phospholipid bilayer and enter the cells.

abstract = "The investigation of the interaction of silver nanoparticles and live bacteria cells is of particular importance for understanding and controlling their bactericidal properties. In this study, the process of internalization of silver nanoparticles in Escherichia coli cells was followed by means of synchrotron excitation deep ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging. Antimicrobial nanostructures that can absorb and emit light in the UV region were prepared by functionalization of silver nanoparticles with tryptophan amino acid and used as environmentally sensitive fluorescent probes. The nanostructures were characterized by morphological (TEM) and spectroscopic methods (UV-vis, FTIR, XPS, and photoluminescence). The TEM images and the analyses of the UV-vis spectra suggested that the addition of tryptophan led to the formation of hybrid nanostructures with pronounced eccentricity and larger sizes with respect to that of the initial silver nanoparticles. The DUV imaging showed that it was possible to distinguish the fluorescent signal pertaining to silver-tryptophan nanostructures from the autofluorescence of the bacteria. The spatial resolution of the fluorescence images was 154 nm which was sufficient to perform analyses of the accumulation of the nanostructures within a single bacterium. The DUV imaging results imply that the tryptophan-functionalized silver nanoparticles interact with cell membranes via insertion of the amino acid into the phospholipid bilayer and enter the cells.",

AB  - Biocompatible fluorescent nanostructures were prepared by a functionalization of gold nanoparticles with the amino acid tryptophan. The gold-tryptophan bioconjugates were investigated by TEM and HRTEM and various spectroscopy methods (XPS, FTIR, UV-vis and photoluminescence). AB  - Poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2-anthocyanin modified cellulose fiber sheets were prepared as a support material for dye-sensitized solar cells. The study is focused on the effects of different anthocyanins on the photo-induced changes and contact relaxation of the surface AC-conductivity of the papers. The anthocyanins were extracted from purple cabbage, beet-root, plum peel, red vine and red currant juice. The results showed that there were pronounced contact relaxation effects at the interfaces between alumina electrode and the papers, which were further affected by the presence of anthocyanins. The electrode effects are mainly manifested by a decrease in conductance, which falls by about 30 % from its initial value about 400 min after the beginning of the experiment carried out in the dark. The illumination of the samples induces an increase in the magnitude of the observed changes in conductance but does not affect the nature of the relaxation processes. By estimating the temperature coefficients of conductivity of the papers and the changes in temperature during the illumination of the samples, we succeeded to separate the effects of heating from the total effects of illumination on the conductance and susceptance of the papers.

AB  - Nanocomposites of polyvinylidene fluoride/polymethyl methacrylate (PVDF/PMMA) blend and mechanically activated barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles were prepared by melt mixing. Modification of filler by means of mechanical activation has a profound effect on the crystallization of PVDF in the blend matrix. Raman analysis showed that the modified BaTiO3 particles, due to higher specific surfaces, induce, predominantly, the crystallization of the electrically active beta-phase of PVDF, while the initial micron size particles induce the formation of the most common but non-polar alpha-crystal form. The introduction of activated particles reduces the overall crystallinity but slightly affects the crystallization and melting temperatures of the matrix. Dielectric spectroscopy revealed that at fixed filler content the dielectric constant of the blend increases with decreasing of the particle size (increasing of the activation time). A similar trend was observed for the storage moduli in dynamic mechanical analysis; the stiffness of the composite was higher when mechanically activated particles were used. AB  - Cellulose fiber sheets impregnated with saccharide capped-ZnO nanoparticles were used as bioactive materials for antibody immobilization. First, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized in the presence of glucose (monosaccharide), sucrose (disaccharide) as well as alginic acid and starch (polysaccharides). The pine cellulose fibers were then modified by the obtained saccharide capped nanoparticles and further incorporated into the sheets. The presence of ZnO significantly improved the immobilization of the antibodies on the surface of the sheets. After rewetting the alginic acid-ZnO modified sheets with saline solution, the retention of antibodies was about 95%. A high degree of the immobilization of biomolecules is an important feature for possible fabrications of bioactive- or biosensing-papers and we successfully tested the sheets on the detection of blood types using (A, B, and D blood antibodies). The ZnO nanopartides affected also the other properties of the sheets. The ZnO-modified fiber sheets showed higher values of tensile index (strength), smoothness and opacity, while the value of porosity was substantially lower than that of the unmodified sheet. The presence of ZnO nanoparticles provided also the antimicrobial activity to the sheets. They showed a strong activity against bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and strong resistance to the attack of cellulase producing fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum. AB  - A procedure for the preparation of ZnO nanocubes in an alginate biopolymer was introduced. The obtained nanocubes were used for the preparation of ZnO/Ag heterostructures. High resolution scanning electron microscopy showed that reduction of silver salts in the presence of nanocubes results in the formation of spherical silver nanoparticles at their edges and vertices. UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that alginate-ZnO/Ag nanostructures exhibit different optical properties compared to the starting alginate-ZnO system. The surface plasmon resonance peak of the silver nanoparticles dominates the absorption spectra of the ZnO/Ag hybrid particles, while at the same time the Ag nanoparticles quench the ZnO emission. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/Ag heterostructure was faster than that of the pure ZnO and further improved with increasing the concentration of silver. Both the alginate-ZnO and alginate-ZnO/Ag nanocomposites showed strong antimicrobial activities against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. abstract = "A procedure for the preparation of ZnO nanocubes in an alginate biopolymer was introduced. The obtained nanocubes were used for the preparation of ZnO/Ag heterostructures. High resolution scanning electron microscopy showed that reduction of silver salts in the presence of nanocubes results in the formation of spherical silver nanoparticles at their edges and vertices. UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that alginate-ZnO/Ag nanostructures exhibit different optical properties compared to the starting alginate-ZnO system. The surface plasmon resonance peak of the silver nanoparticles dominates the absorption spectra of the ZnO/Ag hybrid particles, while at the same time the Ag nanoparticles quench the ZnO emission. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/Ag heterostructure was faster than that of the pure ZnO and further improved with increasing the concentration of silver. Both the alginate-ZnO and alginate-ZnO/Ag nanocomposites showed strong antimicrobial activities against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. AB  - Nanocomposites of electroactive ceramics and ferroelectric polymers exploit favorable features of the matrix polymer and the nanostructured filler to produce new functional materials for pressure and IR sensors. In this study, the influence of mechanical activation of barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles on the structural properties of BaTiO3/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites was investigated. Nanocomposite films were prepared by the solution casting method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that mechanically activated fillers promote the formation of a ferroelectric beta-phase during crystallization of PVDF.

Glycogen and gold nanoparticle bioconjugates: controlled plasmon resonance via glycogen-induced nanoparticle aggregation

AB  - Hybrid nanosystems composed of glycogen biopolymers and gold nanoparticles were prepared by an in situ non-toxic synthetic procedure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and various spectroscopic methods (optical absorption, X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence spectroscopy) were used for the characterization of the obtained bioconjugates. The gold nanoparticles formed in the presence of glycogen were spherical in shape and approximately 15 nm in diameter. The TEM micrographs show that the nanoparticles aggregated on the surface of the glycogen biomolecules. This effect induced a shift of the surface plasmon resonance band towards higher wavelengths on an increase in gold ion concentration. Effective medium theory calculations were carried out in order to explain the observed redshift of the plasmon band in the absorption spectra of the Au-glycogen colloids. The interactions of the gold nanoparticles with glycogen strongly affected the photoluminescence of the glycogenin protein incorporated into its structure. The Au-glycogen hydrocolloids exhibited good chemical stability in the presence of saline, phosphate buffered saline, alanine, histidine and D-glucose.

AB  - Nanostructured cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead sulfide (PbS) semiconductors were prepared in a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) matrix. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by using optical and structural methods. Co-polymers were synthesized in two different molar ratios of pDMAEMA: acrylic acid monomer units (1 : 2, 1 : 1). Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed the presence of nano-sized CdSe and PbS particles. In the case of CdSe, a shift of the onset of the optical absorption toward lower wavelengths was observed. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that both CdSe and PbS nanoparticles have cubic crystal structure.

AB  - Nanostructured lanthanum (III)-oxide (La2O3) particles were prepared by a polymer complex solution method and further used for the preparation of lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) nanoparticles. The La(OH)3 nanopowder was mixed with glycerol-plasticized maize starch and the effect of the filler on the thermal, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of the matrix was investigated. It was expected that this nanofiller, which shows an affinity toward OH groups, would strongly affect the physical properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS). The pure TPS and the TPS-La(OH)3 nanocomposite films (with 1, 2, and 3 wt % filler) were conditioned at various relative humidities (RHs) (35, 57, 75, and 99% RH). After conditioning at 99% RH, the pure TPS films exhibited higher affinity toward water than the nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetric measurements showed that, due to retrogradation effects, the melting enthalpies of the films increased with increasing RH. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the mechanical properties in the linear range strongly depend on both the humidity conditions and the concentration of the filler.
