AB - A few years ago, Serbian RP Regulatory authrities have been met with unusual situation of alerting of radiation monitors at borders by import of significant amounts of zirconium silicate, as raw material in ceramic industry. Through further investigations, a situation that huge amount of imported zirconium silicate hadn’t been stored in a proper way to prevent possible harmfull influences on surroundings had been found. It was necessary to investigate further all possible influences that could be caused by significant amount of zirconium silicate stored in the workplaces neighborhood. In this paper we present the complete activities that Radiation Protection Department of Vinca Institute, coordinated by nacional regulatory comission has been made to performe complete monitoring and radiological topography in the places that has been exposed to significant amount of zirconium silicate. Also we present the complete activities that we have taken to achive complete protection of workers, in ceramic industry, who have been exposed to influence of zirconium silicate during the work time. The conclusions that we made after monitoring has been performed on working places where zirconium silicate is present, and the resultates have been presented in this paper as enacted criteria for protection of workers and the evironement.

AB - We have measured hyperfine interactions of 181Ta probe in the polycrystalline 0.2at.%Hf-Ni, 2at.%Hf-Ni and 5at.%Hf-Ni alloys, by the time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) method at room temperature (RT). The hyperfine magnetic field (Hhf) in 0.2at.%Hf-Ni alloy at the 181Ta probe is 8.66(1)T, where the small atomic concentrations of Hf atoms mainly substitute on Ni host lattice sites. Three hyperfine interactions were detected in two other alloys. In the 2at.%Hf-Ni alloy, we found existence of Larmor precession frequency ωL (1)=536(2)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe surrounded by Ni atoms and the second electric quadrupole interaction (EQI) ωQ (2)=2.20(2)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe in new formed HfNi5 intermetallic phase. The third EQI ωQ (3)=137.4(1)Mrad/s corresponds to the small amount of monoclinic HfO2 phase contamination at T<900K. In the 5at%Hf-Ni alloy, magnetic dipole interaction (MDI) at the 181Ta probe is ωL (1)=536(6)Mrad/s, while the second EQI at the site of the same probe in HfNi5 is ωQ (2)=2.24(2)Mrad/s. The presence of ωQ (3)=128(1)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe originating from HfO2 contamination is in good accordance with earlier published results for this phase.

AB - According with establishing of radiation safety regulatory system of Republic of Serbia, Goverment of Republic of Serbia in cooperation with international community (IAEA, DOE), has developed a national orphan sources recovery program. The role, possibilities the results of Vinca Institute in that program has been presented in this paper. The main goal of the program is to put all orphan sources found in Serbia in storage in Vinca Institute, and restore regulatory control. In this paper existing state of orphan sources programe, goals of the system development, programmes for seaching of sources, plans, stuff education and training are given. Special concern was given to planning process for seaching of sources. It includes decission on location to be treated, quantity and types of expected source estimation and resources wich will be used. Plan of training includes radiation protection and quality assurance aspects.

AB - It is assessed that there are some 10 g of unused 226Ra sources on several locations in Serbia [1,6,7]. The majority of those sources are in Vinca Institute, in several different storage locations. Another place, with a significant amount of radium, was Institute for the Oncology and Radiology of Serbia (IOR) in Belgrade. Having in mind the amount and condition of those sources as well as the location of the IOR, the whole operation of collection, repackaging, transportation and conditioning of the sources needed to be carefully preplanned and conducted with all radiation safety and security measures needed being implemented and in place. Repackaging and conditioning of the sources have been done under IAEA project by the Hungarian „Izotop“ firm, and radiation safety and security measures have been obligation of national countepart, Vinca Institute, with full supervision and support of all relevant national state agencies. The overall radiation safety assessment of the operation and safety and security measures taken during those activities are presented in this paper.
