AB - Dy3+-and Nd3+-doped YNbO4 powders were prepared using a mechanochemical method followed by annealing, and their photoluminescent properties were examined to assess the possibility of their use in phosphor thermometry. Luminescence intensity ratio technique was used as a temperature readout scheme for both YNba(4):Dy3+ and YNbO4:Nd3+ samples. The crystalline structure of the samples is confirmed by XRD measurements, while SEM was used for the microstructural and compositional characterization. Sample doped with Dy3+ ions emitting in the blue region has been investigated in the 293-773 K temperature range and exhibits maximal relative sensitivity of 1.97% K-1 at 300 K. YNbO4:Nd3+ sample showed intense NIR emission which fall into the first biological window. When heated from 303 up to 473 K relative temperature sensitivity of 0.28%K-1 at 300 K was achieved. Values of temperature sensitivities show that YNbO4 has a large potential for the development of thermographic phosphors in the blue and NIR spectral ranges when doped with trivalent Dy and Nd, respectively. AB - (Y1-xLnx)2O3 oxides (Ln = Y, Gd, Lu) doped with Eu3+ ions are widely used as commercialized scintillators in medical and industrial scanning applications, with high performance and attractive properties. In this work, effects of high-energy radiation on luminescence properties of (Y1-xGdx)2O3: Eu3+ powders with different particle sizes in the nanometric range are analyzed. Powders were prepared by polymer complex solution route, followed by annealing. Nanoparticles were obtained with an average size between 20 and 120 nm according to annealing conditions (time and temperature). Samples were exposed to gamma-irradiation (doses up to 4 MGy) on a commercial gamma-irradiation plant. The effect of irradiation on different nanoparticle size is followed by XRD, TEM and monitoring their luminescence properties. No change was observed in structure, morphology and steady-state emission. On the opposite after irradiation, excited-state lifetimes and quantum efficiency values are particle size dependent. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - MgTiO3 nanoparticles doped with Mn4+, with homogeneous size ranging about 63.1 ± 9.8 nm, were synthesized by a molten salt assisted sol gel method. These nanoparticles have been investigated as optical thermal sensors. The luminescence of tetravalent manganese ion in octahedral environment within the perovskite host presents drastic variations with temperature. Three different thermometry approaches have been proposed and characterized. Two luminescence intensity ratios are studied. Firstly between the two R-lines of Mn4+ emission at low temperature (-250 °C and -90 °C) with a maximal sensitivity of 0.9% °C-1, but also secondly between 2E → 4A2 (R-line) and the 4T2 → 4A2 transitions. This allows studying the temperature variation within a larger temperature range (-200 °C to 50 °C) with a sensitivity between 0.6% °C-1 and 1.2% °C-1 over this range. The last proposed method is the study of the lifetime variation versus temperature. The effective lifetime value corresponds to a combination of transitions from two excited energy levels of the tetravalent manganese (2E and 4T2) in thermal equilibrium toward the fundamental 4A2 state. Since the more energetic transition (4T2 → 4A2) is spin-allowed, contrary to the 2E → 4A2 one, the lifetime drastically decreases with the increase in temperature leading to an impressive high sensitivity value of 4.1% °C-1 at 4 °C and an exceptional temperature resolution of 0.025 °C. According to their optical features, MgTiO3:Mn4+ nanoparticles are indeed suitable candidates for the luminescence temperature probes at the nanoscale over several temperature ranges.

AB - Herein, the synthesis, structural and crystal field analysis and optical spectroscopy of Mn4+ doped metal titanates ATiO(3) (A = Ca, Mg) are presented. Materials of desired phase were prepared by molten salt assisted sol-gel method in the powder form. Crystallographic data of samples were obtained by refinement of X-ray diffraction measurements. From experimental excitation and emission spectra and structural data, crystal field parameters and energy levels of Mn4+ in CaTiO3 and MgTiO3 were calculated by the exchange charge model of crystal-field theory. It is found that crystalline field strength is lower (Dq = 1831 cm(-1)) in the rhombohedral Ilmenite MgTiO3 structure due to the relatively longer average Mn4+-O2- bond distance (2.059 angstrom), and higher (Dq = 2017 cm(-1)) in orthorhombic CaTiO3 which possess shorter average Mn4+-O2- bond distance (1.956 angstrom). Spectral positions of the Mn(4+2)Eg - GT (4)A(2g) transition maxima is 709 nm in MgTiO3 and 717 nm in CaTiO3 respectively in good agreement with calculated values. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - Dense yttria ceramics were prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering of a nanopowder synthesized using a PEG assisted combustion method. Densification occurs between 800 degrees C and 900 degrees C without any additive. This corresponds to one of the lowest sintering temperature found in the literature for Y2O3. Because of a significant release of organic species, the Y2O3 precursors obtained by this synthesis route contains macropores that have a negative impact on the final microstructure. We show that the emergence of these macropores can be minimized by decreasing the annealing temperature used for the precursor powder (in a temperature range of 300-650 degrees C) as opposed to the usual 800 degrees C. Finally, a precursor annealed at 650 degrees C allows us to obtain fully dense ceramics, with a very fine and homogeneous microstructure (and a grain size around 300 nm). Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness were measured and discussed in relation to the microstructure of the ceramics.

AB - In this paper, a novel route for the synthesis of Y2SiO5 (YSO) nanoparticles doped with Eu3+ ions. based on the use of a hydrothermally prepared silica sol as a chemical precursor and nanostructurign template, is presented. X-ray powder diffraction revealed crystallization of nanoparticles in an X-1 monoclinic structural type (P2(l)/c) with well pronounced diffraction peaks and Without any sign of additional phases. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the particle diameter was around 40 nm and that the particles formed loose aggregates. The synthesized materials exhibited characteristic luminescence emission of the trivalent europium ion, with the strongest emission (D-5(0) - GT F-7(2) transition) at 611.5 nm and a corresponding lifetime of 1.8 ms. Two site occupancy, as expected, were demonstrated. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Yttrium-gadolinium-oxide phosphors are regarded promising host for many important optical applications, for example in medical diagnostic X-ray systems and plasma displays. In this work, we investigated the procedure for (Y0.75Gd0.25)(2)O-3:Eu3+ nanopowder synthesis using polymer complex solution (PCS) method based on polyethylene glycol (PEG) as fuel. Detailed information, on both the structure and luminescence, are obtained using X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy and luminescence spectroscopy. The synthesized powder consists of nanoparticles of about 36 nm in size, and has excellent structural ordering in cubic bixbyte structure (space group Ia3). Unit cell parameter, ionic coordinates, crystal coherence size and microstrains are determined from Rietveld analysis. Luminescence emission measurements show characteristic transition of the trivalent europium ion incorporated into insulating host. Splitting of the Stark components of the F-7(1) manifold is presented. D-5(0), D-5(1) and D-5(2) decay time values are measured to obtain information on different kinetic processes occurring for these three emitting levels.

AB - This study considers effects of pressure of up to 110 kbar on line position and fluorescence lifetime T for T-4(1) - GT (6)A(1) transition in LMA:Mn2+ and LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+. Energy transfer between Mn2+ and Nd3+ in LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+ has also been considered. Results indicate pressure induced line shift towards longer wavelengths, a red-shift in both crystals with the same rate of 0.182 nm kbar(-1). Pressure influences fluorescence lifetime T in the considered crystals differently; whereas for LMA:Mn2+ increasing pressure causes slow linear decrease Of T, and for LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+ T increases linearly as pressure raises. Energy transfer efficiencies decrease with pressure. High pressure induced red-shift can be explained by a simple model. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The fluorescence spectra of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles have been measured under the pressure of up to 78kbar at room temperature. In this pressure range, a red-shift of 0.02(1)nm/kbar-1 is noticed for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition). This shift is explained by the change of negative charge of the surrounding ligands. Compatibility between measured and calculated values for the 0-2 line position was obtained. The luminescence decay curves of the 5D07F2 transition were studied up to 78kbar and were found to behave exponentially for all pressures studied. The fluorescence lifetime for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition) slowly decreased with pressure. The pressure effect on for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition) was explained by a model which considers the pressure effect on the line position, inter-ionic distance, ion volume and polarizability, molecular volume and polarizability, molecular refractive index and the refractive index medium nmed of the surrounding hydrostatic medium. The fluorescence lifetime calculated by the present model is in close correspondence with the experimental values.

One of them is the sol-gel technique for nanopowder synthesis. Applied to a binary system Gd2O3-SiO2 doped with trivalent europiurn ion, very fine powder form samples have been obtained. In that case the emission intensity of D-5(0)- GT F-2 electronic transition of 4f(6) configuration is greatly enhanced compared to the bulk oxide. The lifetime measurements are given too. The size of nanoparticles is of about 10 nm, determined by dynamic light scattering and XRD analysis.

AB - In this paper is given a synthesis of Gd2SiO5 (GSO) host lattice doped with Eu3+ ions using silica sol obtained by hydrothermal method as a main precursor for its nanostructure designing. X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy show that synthesized nanopowder has particle size around 10 nm. These nanosized materials exhibit strong red emission at 614 nm. Lifetime measurements have been performed on two Eu3+ emitting levels, D-5(1), and D-5(0). 1.37 ms is obtained for the D-5(0) emitting level while the D-5(1) emission is fast about (10)mu s. AB - In this paper the luminescent properties of a composite made from isotactic polypropylene and silicate nanopowder doped with trivalent europium ion were investigated. The method for obtaining the investigated composite is presented. Thermochemical properties of the composite were determined by DSC and TG measurements, while the structure was checked by X-ray diffraction measurements. Luminescent properties for two differently crystallized nanocomposites were determined by measuring room temperature excitation and emission spectra, as well as the emission lifetime of the D-5(0)- GT F-7(2) transition. It is established that the synthesized nanocomposites exhibits strong luminescent emission characteristic for a trivalent europium ion. Spectral analysis reveals that the europium ion local environment is inherent to changes of polypropylene crystallinity, suggesting that the efficient encapsulation of rare earth ions into polymers may be achieved using nano-silica. In addition, much stronger luminescence intensity was noticed for the case of polypropylene of higher crystallinity. The same was found for the D-5(0) emission lifetime (1.19 ms), which is a quite high value for this type of materials and may be favorable for future applications.
