AB  - The interaction of ultrashort laser beam with metal surfaces may induce the generation of periodic structures (LIPSS) with period less than the incoming wavelength, opening wide area of application [1, 2]. The presence of the underneath layer influences the quality of the LIPSS [3] . We have exposed multilayer thin films Ni/Ti, Ni/Pd, W/Ti, Ti/Ta to femtosecond beams of various wavelengths and powers. The interactions have been performed by Mira900 fs laser of Coherent. Detailed surface morphology after irradiation was examined firstly by optical microscopy, and then by scanning electron microscopy (JEOL JSM-7500F, Tokyo, Japan). Two types of structures have been noticed. Their appearance differ in the direction against the polarization direction, in pronounced ablation and in the spatial period, enabling their grouping into LIPSS of higher and lower spatial frequencies. Surface plasmon polariton is seen as the most probable cause of periodic distribution of energy at the surface and consequently to LIPSS.

AB  - In the last decade, an immense progress has been made in white LEDs, mainly due to the development of red-emitting phosphors. In this paper, we report on the synthesis of Eu3+ activated Y2MoO6 by a self-initiated and self-sustained method. The obtained powder was calcined at various temperatures in the 600–1400 °C range and examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The results revealed that all powders are single phase Y2MoO6:Eu3+, with particle size in the nanorange at lower treatment temperatures (600 and 800 °C) and in the microrange at higher calcination temperatures (1000–1400 °C). The obtained powders are promising materials for white light-emitting diodes as they can efficiently absorb energy in 324–425 nm region (near-UV to blue light region) and emit at 611 nm in the red region of the spectrum, while exhibiting high thermal and chemical stability.

Luminescence Properties Of Eu3+ Doped Mayenite Under High Pressure

AB  - Europium doped mayenite (C12A7) powders of different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 at.%) have been synthesized by a modified glycine/nitrate procedure - MGNP). Obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE- SEM), and steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. The effect of doping concentration on photoluminescence properties of Eu3+ doped mayenite was studied and discussed. With the increasing of Eu3+ doping concentration, the red-emitting intensity exhibited behavior that increased firstly and then decreased. The optimal Eu3+ ion concentration is found to be 1.5%. High-pressure luminescence was measured in a Betsa high-pressure membrane diamond anvil cell up to 23 GPa.

AB  - The occurrence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been known for a while. Multilayer thin films, like Al/Ti, are suitable for LIPSS formation and attractive for applications—due to their wearing behavior and corrosion resistance; LIPSS generation may improve their properties as well. LIPSS properties depend not only on the material but also on the beam characteristics, like wavelength, polarization and scanning directions, etc. After exposing with NIR femtosecond pulses from Coherent Mira 900 laser system in several beam exposures, we have analyzed the samples of thin metal film systems with Tescan Mira3 SEM and NTegra AFM. The formation of LIPSS is most probably due to the generation of surface plasmon polariton, through the periodic distribution of energy in the interaction zone which lead to thermal processes in layers and interfaces. Two types of LIPSS were generated, which differ in shape, orientation and in ablation pronounced or not. For consecutive interactions in the same direction, LIPSS maintained its orientation, while for orthogonal passes LIPSS with mutually orthogonal orientation were generated. LIPSS period fluctuated between 320 and 380 nm and structures with pronounced ablation have significantly smaller width. Probable mechanism is that for greater accumulated energy pronounced ablation takes place giving LIPSS in the form of trenches or grooves, while for less accumulated energy the buildup of the material—probably due to pronounced oxidation—lead to LIPSS in the form of hills or ridges.

AB  - Rare earth ions (RE3+) are highly sensitive to local symmetry so changing the symmetry is reflected in their luminescence spectra. In this work we investigated the high pressure photoluminescence properties of cubic and monoclinic Y2O3, as well as, monoclinic Y2MoO6, doped either with Eu3+ or Sm3+ ions. Photoluminescence emission of cubic Y2O3 :Sm3+ and Y2O3 :Eu3+ phases were recorded up to the pressure of 20 GPa and 15 GPa, respectively. With varying pressure, the intensity ratio of 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 and 4F3/2 → 6H7/2 Sm3+ emission shows three distinct regions. Furthermore, the intensity ratio of 5D0 → 7F1 and 5D0 → 7F2 Eu3+ emission of the cubic matrix has similar pressure dependence as Sm3+ doped phase. A steep pressure dependence evident in the range of 9.2-13.1 GPa could be used for detecting a pressure induced cubic to monoclinic phase transition of Y2O3 matrix. It matches well the behavior of the pressure sensitive Sm3+ spectra in the range of 9.1-11.6 GPa, which is proven to appear due to a phase transition at ~ 11 GPa. The monoclinic Y2O3 :Eu3+ also has a pressure-sensitive intensity ratio of 5D0→7F1 and 5D0→7F2 emission lines. Measurements for the monoclinic Y2O3 :Eu3+ matrix were recorded up to 8 GPa. The dependence is unambiguous, without any phase transitions in the measured region. The nature and high sensitivity suggests that this dependence can be used as an efficient high pressure sensor. Photoluminescence emission measurements of Y2MoO6:Sm3+ and Y2MoO6:Eu3+ phases were recorded up to 12 and 11.5 GPa, respectivelly. Intensity ratio variation of 4G5/2→6H5/2 and 4G5/2→6H7/2 Sm3+ emission lines, as well as of 5D0 → 7F1 and 5D0 → 7F2 Eu3+ emission lines as a function of pressure can be also used for detection of the Y2MoO6 phase transition. The accomplished results demonstrate the properties of Y2MoO6:Sm3+ and Y2MoO6:Eu3+ inorganic phosphors, with emmision linear dependance of the intensity ratio on the pressure up to 8 GPa, could be used as an efficient high pressure sensor.

AB  - Nanostructuring of surfaces by femtosecond (fs) laser beam interaction is the topic of research for some time [1]. The emergence of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on metal-dielectric surfaces is of interest from fundamental and application points of view. The interaction of fs beam with thin films can also generate LIPSS, with the arrangement of thin films in multi-layer structure being important for the quality of the LIPSS [2]. Excellent properties of titanium (Ti) and tantalum (Ta), like corrosion resistance, heat transfer properties and workability, recommend them as useful materials for a wide range of applications - heat exchangers, reactors, and others exposed to extremely corrosive fluids. Combining Ti and Ta could be attractive for applications, but challenging, as they have great difference in melting point and density, therefore, TiTa alloys are still not widely adopted in applications [3]. We have performed the interaction of fs laser beam with multilayer Ti/Ta samples in order to investigate the effects of interaction with ultra-short pulses to surface morphology and to both surface and bulk chemistry of newly generated compounds. Each layer of the sample was 17 nm thick. The interactions were in two regimes: dynamic and static, depending whether the beam scanned over the sample surface or not. SEM and PIXE RBS analyses have shown the LIPSS formed with or without ablation depending on the beam fluence. The LIPSS orientation is dependent on the input beam polarization. Both types of LIPSS were formed, low- and highspatial frequency LIPSS, with periods being as low as 120 nm.

The occurrence of surface plasmon polariton most probably induces the LIPSS arrangement. The spatial period of LIPSS increases with the change of scanning directions in respect to the polarization direction due to the phase difference increase between the incoming and induced oscillations. AB  - Formation of periodic nanostructures on the Ti/5x(Al/Ti)/Si multilayers induced by picosecond laser pulses is studied in order to better understand the formation of a laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). At fluence slightly below the ablation threshold, the formation of low spatial frequency-LIPSS (LSFL) oriented perpendicular to the direction of the laser polarization is observed on the irradiated area. Prolonged irradiation while scanning results in the formation of a high spatial frequency-LIPSS (HSFL), on top of the LSFLs, creating a co-existence parallel periodic structure. HSFL was oriented parallel to the incident laser polarization. Intermixing between the Al and Ti layers with the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds was achieved during the irradiation. The intermetallic region was formed mostly within the heat affected zone of the sample. Surface segregation of aluminium with partial ablation of the top layer of titanium was followed by the formation of an ultra-thin Al2O3 film on the surface of the multi-layered structure. The treatment was done by immersion of the spider silkmesh into aqueous solutions of cerium nitrate (Ce(NO3)(3)) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH). Depending on the relationship between Ce3+ ion and ammonium hydroxide concentration, coated fibers exhibited a different thickness. Obtained materials were studied by means of FESEM. It was found that ceria nanoparticles of average size of 3 nm were coated along spider thread. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed crystal nature of nanoparticle coating of spider silk. By using Williamson-Hall plots, crystallite size and strain were estimated. EDS measurement confirmed the presence of Eu in spider-Eu-doped ceria composite, and according to FTIR analysis, the interaction between CeO2 and spider silk was proposed. The morphology of obtained composite was observed by TEM. The photoluminescence emission spectra of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria were measured with two different excitations of 385 and 466 nm. The two-photon excited auto-fluorescence of spider silk coated with Eu-doped ceria was detected using a nonlinear laser scanning microscope. AB  - Nanocrystalline hexagonal boron nitride powders (h-BN) were synthesized from urea and boric acid followed by pirolysis and subsequent heat treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. Materials have been analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, Photoluminescence and Field emission electron microscopy methods. Obtained results show that starting h-BN powder, synthesized at 750 degrees C, is composed of similar to 11 layer crystallites with average crystallite thickness and crystallite lateral size of 3.94 and 10.4 nm, respectively. A broad emission and intense luminescence intensity were observed due to the large atomic disorder. AB  - In this work we investigated the photoluminescence properties of Y2O3: Er3+, Eu3+ as a function of temperature and the possibility to use this material as a temperature sensor. Photoluminescence emission measurements with 532 nm laser excitation were recorded in the temperature range from 303 up to 573 K. The measured intensity ratio of erbium S-4(3/2) - GT I-4(15/ 2) and europium D-5(0) - GT F-7(2) emission lines was used for determination of the temperature calibration curve. These emission lines are intense, narrow and well defined. The distance between the lines, being 47 nm, can be easily measured even with a low-resolution spectrometer. The calculated relative sensitivity of the temperature sensor was 1.4% K-1 at 303 K, in the physiological temperature range, meaning that it could be successfully applied in biological studies.

AB  - The surface morphology of the ablation craters created in the multilayer 10x(Al/Ti)/Si system by nanosecond laser pulses at single- and dual wavelength has been studied experimentally and numerically. A complex multilayer thin film including ten (Al/Ti) bilayers deposited by ion sputtering on Si(1 0 0) substrate to a total thickness of 260 nm were illuminated at different laser irradiance in the range 0.25-3.5 x 10(9)W cm(-2). Single pulse laser irradiation was done at normal incidence in air, with the single wavelength, either at 532 nm or 1064 nm or with both laser light simultaneously in the ratio of 1: 10 for energy per pulse between second harmonic and 1064 nm. Most of the absorbed laser energy was rapidly transformed into heat, producing intensive modifications of composition and morphology on the sample surface. The results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of specific nanostructures, appearance of hydrodynamic features and ablation of surface material with crater formation. Applying a small fraction (10%) of the second harmonic in dual-wavelength pulses, a modification of the 10x(Al/Ti)/Si system by a single laser pulse was reflected in the formation of wider and/or deeper craters. Numerical calculations show that the main physical mechanism in ablation process is normal evaporation without phase explosion. The calculated and experimental results agree relatively well for the whole irradiance range, what makes the model applicable to complex Al/Ti multilayer systems. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The results obtained show that laser irradiation induced mixing between Ni and Ti layers which creates conditions for the formation of intermetallic compounds. A numerical model was used to predict ablation depths and temperatures inside the material during the time. The model prediction shows a close agreement with experimental data.

AB  - Metallic copper Cu and bimetallic copper-silver CuAg nanoparticles (NPs) are generated by the ablation of copper bulk target in water and aqueous Ag colloidal solution, respectively. The experiments were performed using nanosecond Nd: YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. The generated NPs are characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. The conducted investigations can be summarized as follows: (i) CuAg NPs colloidal solution possess the absorption in UV-vis spectral region, which can be attributed to the Cu-component; (ii) the primary bimetallic CuAg NPs have near uniform dimensions with diameter of about 15 nm, and as a rule, they are grouped into larger agglomerates without defined morphology; (iii) the obtained Cu NPs have mainly spherical form with average diameters up to 20 nm. Both types of NPs show a tendency towards the formation of large agglomerates with different morphology. Bimetallic NPs show the plasmon resonance in the vicinity of 640 nm with a good coincidence with formation of the colloidal solution of pure Cu NPs. The results also demonstrate that the core-shell structure (Ag-rich core/Cu-rich shell) is important for the formation of the bimetallic NPs, also agreeing very well with theory.

AB  - Bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were formed by laser ablation of Ni target immersed in the colloidal gold solution. Effect of laser parameters (pulse duration, fluences and ablation times) on size and composition of nanoparticles was investigated by ablating the target with two Nd:YAG lasers at 1064 nm, operating with different pulse durations, 150 ps and 20 ns. Stronger ablation of the Ni target and subsequient synthesis of nanoparticles is achieved with picosecond pulses, compared to the nanoparticles production with nanosecond pulses, because the former ablation induces activation of different reactions between species in the colloidal solution. Shape, size and composition of the synthesized nanopraticles were found to correlate with the concentration of Ni species in the colloidal solution. Higher Ni concentration leads to formation of larger NiAu nanoparticles in form of solid solution. Smaller nanoparticles with lower Ni concentration in the colloidal solution were achieved by their synthesis during nanosecond pulses, when the obtained distribution of composition corresponds to the NiO matrix with incorporated golden nanoparticles. The results also demonstrate that the formation of bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were possible by means of laser ablation in liquids. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were formed by laser ablation of Ni target immersed in the colloidal gold solution. Effect of laser parameters (pulse duration, fluences and ablation times) on size and composition of nanoparticles was investigated by ablating the target with two Nd:YAG lasers at 1064 nm, operating with different pulse durations, 150 ps and 20 ns. Stronger ablation of the Ni target and subsequient synthesis of nanoparticles is achieved with picosecond pulses, compared to the nanoparticles production with nanosecond pulses, because the former ablation induces activation of different reactions between species in the colloidal solution. Shape, size and composition of the synthesized nanopraticles were found to correlate with the concentration of Ni species in the colloidal solution. Higher Ni concentration leads to formation of larger NiAu nanoparticles in form of solid solution. Smaller nanoparticles with lower Ni concentration in the colloidal solution were achieved by their synthesis during nanosecond pulses, when the obtained distribution of composition corresponds to the NiO matrix with incorporated golden nanoparticles. The results also demonstrate that the formation of bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were possible by means of laser ablation in liquids. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.",

The surface modification of the target was done by low fluences and different irradiation times, not exceeding similar to 300s. We achieved high-quality highly-controllable fabrication of periodic structures on the surface of nanosized multilayer films with high-repetition-rate low-fluence femtosecond laser pulses. Compared to the Al single layer, the presence of the Ti underlayer in the Al/Ti multilayer thin film enabled more efficient heat transmittance through the Al/Ti interface away from the interaction zone which caused the reduction of the ablation effects leading to the formation of more regular LIPSS. The different outcomes of interactions with multi and single layer thin films lead to the conclusion that the behavior of the LIPSS is due to thin film structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. AB  - A single-step process for rapid fabrication of large-area concave microlens
arrays using a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser operating at 473 nm is
developed. Using tartrazine sensitized gelatin layer treated with tot’hema -
mixture of iron (II)-, manganese (II)- and copper(II)gluconate- (denoted
short as tSTG) and a direct laser writing device developed in our laboratory,
we could produce 10 000 uniform microlens arrays within 30 min. Uniform
microlenses with different diameters and depth can be produced by varying
the laser power, exposure time and dye concentration.

AB  - In this work we reported low and high repetition frequency femtosecond laser- induced modifications of tungsten-based thin film. The tungsten-titanium (WTi) thin film, thickness of 190 nm, was deposited by sputtering on single crystal Si (100) wafer. Irradiations were performed in air by linearly polarized and focused femtosecond laser beams with following parameters: (1) pulse duration 160 fs, wavelength 800 nm, laser repetition frequency (LRF) 75 MHz - high LRF, and (2) duration 40 fs, wavelength 800 nm, LRF of 1 kHz - low LRF. The results of femtosecond lasers processing of the WTi thin film revealed laser induced periodical surface structures (LIPSS) in the case of low LRF regime. LIPSSs were formed with different periodicity and different orientation to the laser polarization at the surface: micro-scale LIPSSs with orientation perpendicular to the laser polarization and nano-scale LIPSSs parallel and perpendicular to the laser polarization. After processing of the WTi/Si system in high LRF regime ablation and nanoparticles formation were registered.

AB  - The conditions of ultra-thin oxide films synthesized as the Al/Fe multilayer structures after the surface treatment with femtosecond laser radiation were studied. Thin films composed of three (Al/Fe) bilayers were deposited by DC ion sputtering on (100) Si wafers to the total thickness of 410 nm. Laser irradiations were performed by 40-fs pulses of a Ti:Sapphire laser operating at 800 nm, at fluences slightly higher than the ablation threshold. The samples were characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Progressed intermixing of components was achieved for the irradiation with fluence of 0.43 J cm(-2), when intermetallic phase was formed and all components were almost uniformly distributed through the entire multilayer structure. Exception is the subsurface region, to the thickness of 20 nm, where the distribution of constructive components and their oxide is changing with the distance from the surface, and this distribution depends on the applied laser fluences. An ultra-thin oxide layer was formed at the surface, with the specific combination of the oxide phases, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, depending on the applied fluences. Laser-induced modification was accompanied with the ablation of the material and the creation of parallel periodic structures. These effects of laser-induced morphological features are increased with increasing laser fluences, caused by the pronounced mobility of the materials. The special morphology of the laser-assisted synthesis of mixture of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 in the form of an ultra-thin oxide layer can improve their characteristics for functional applications, as catalysts and sensors.

AB  - Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) and chemical composition changes of Ti-based nanolayered thin films (Al/Ti, Ni/Ti) after femtosecond (fs) laser pulses action were studied. Irradiation is performed using linearly polarized Ti:Sapphire fs laser pulses of 40 fs pulse duration and 800 nm wavelength. The low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL), oriented perpendicular to the laser polarization with periods slightly lower than the irradiation wavelength, was typically formed at elevated laser fluences. On the contrary, high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL) with uniform period of 155 nm, parallel to the laser light polarization, appeared at low laser fluences, as well as in the wings of the Gaussian laser beam distribution for higher used fluence. LSFL formation was associated with the material ablation process and accompanied by the intense formation of nanoparticles, especially in the Ni/Ti system. The composition changes at the surface of both multilayer systems in the LSFL area indicated the intermixing between layers and the substrate. Concentration and distribution of all constitutive elements in the irradiated area with formed HSFLs were almost unchanged. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL), oriented perpendicular to the laser polarization with periods slightly lower than the irradiation wavelength, was typically formed at elevated laser fluences. On the contrary, high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL) with uniform period of 155 nm, parallel to the laser light polarization, appeared at low laser fluences, as well as in the wings of the Gaussian laser beam distribution for higher used fluence. LSFL formation was associated with the material ablation process and accompanied by the intense formation of nanoparticles, especially in the Ni/Ti system. The composition changes at the surface of both multilayer systems in the LSFL area indicated the intermixing between layers and the substrate. Concentration and distribution of all constitutive elements in the irradiated area with formed HSFLs were almost unchanged. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.",

AB  - The interaction of an Er, Yb, Cr-glass laser, operating at 1540 nm wavelength and a pulse duration of 40 ns, with Ni/Ti multilayer thin films has been studied. Five (Ni/Ti) bilayers deposited by DC ion sputtering on Si(100) wafers to a total thickness of about 180 nm were treated with laser fluences of about 6.4 and 8.8 J cm(-2). Single and multi-pulse laser irradiation was done at normal incidence in air, water and ethanol ambients. The composition and surface morphology were monitored by particle-induced x-ray emission, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), scanning electron microscopy and profilometry. Most of the absorbed laser energy was rapidly transformed into heat, producing intensive modifications of composition and morphology on the target surface. The results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of parallel periodic surface structures, appearance of hydrodynamic features and ablation of surface material. RBS analysis revealed that laser modification induced inter-mixing between the components of individual Ni and Ti layers, with indications of the formation of NiTi intermetallic compounds. An interesting finding is the morphological changes dominant in the Si substrate, whereas the Ni/Ti multilayer structure has mainly undergone changes in the chemical composition.

AB  - A study of morphological and composition changes of the (8(Al/Ti)/Si) system induced by laser pulses in different ambient conditions is presented. Irradiation of 8(Al/Ti)/Si was carried out at intensities of 5.9 and 9.5 x 10(11) W m(-2) in air, water and ethanol. The laser-induced morphological and composition modifications have shown dependence on applied intensities, number of laser pulses and ambient conditions. The following morphological changes were observed: (i) intense surface melting of the thin film and Si-substrate; (ii) ablation/exfoliation of the 8(Al/Ti) multilayer thin film from Si, (iii) appearance of hydrodynamic features such as resolidified material, and (iv) formation of crater at multi-pulse action. The formation of parallel periodic surface structure was only occurring in single pulse air-assisted modification. Analysis of the composition revealed that laser modification induced intermixing between the components of individual Al and Ti layers with potential formation of AlTi intermetallic compounds. AB  - A study of the effects of laser irradiation on the morphology and structure of Al/Ti and Ni/Ti multilayers is reported in this paper. Multilayers of Al/Ti and Ni/Ti were deposited by dc ion sputtering on Si(100) substrates in a single vacuum run. Laser processing was done by a focused Er, Yb, Cr glass laser beam at a wavelength of 1540 nm, a pulse duration of 40 ns and fluence in the range 8.5-23.8 J cm(-2). Surface changes can be summarized as follows: (i) the intensive removal of surface material with crater-like characteristics, (ii) the appearance of hydrodynamic features (such as resolidified droplets) and (iii) the sporadic appearance of cracking. Changes in the (Ni/Ti)/Si system included modification of the Si substrate with the formation of polygonal-mosaic structures and the appearance of hydrodynamic features in the form of nano-globules. The rate of ablation increased with energy density, whereas the rate of ablation for the (Ni/Ti)/Si system (similar to 11 x 10(3) mu m(3) per pulse) was higher than that for the (Al/Ti)/Si system (similar to 7 x 10(3) mu m(3) per pulse).
