AB - Polycrystalline LiInO2 was synthesized by the solid-state method and was characterized using combined experimental and computational methods. The results of experimental measurements were compared with the computational analysis of lattice vibrations based on DFT calculations. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical frequencies of LiInO2 structure vibration mode was obtained. © 2023, Publishing House of the Romanian Academy. All rights reserved.

AB - Resultsof Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) are reported for lithium-niobium-titanium-oxide (LNTO) ceramics synthesized by a solid-state reaction method with two functional additives (MoO3 or ZnO) in the temperature range 323 K - 573 K and frequencies between 10−1 Hz and 107 Hz. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals a textured morphology of rod and plate-like particles that are typical for M-phase LNTO materials, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of an M-phase member compound with an approximate structure of Li7Nb3Ti5O21. Complex impedance analysis indicates that its overall electrical resistivity behavior depends mostly on the grain boundary processes. EIS analysis shows a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior (NTCR) in a defined temperature range in two LNTOs and thermal activation of the conduction mechanisms. The low dielectric constants of 5.5 and 12.1 at 1 MHz were found for the first and second LNTOs, respectively. Complimentary Raman spectroscopic measurements, despite very large crystallographic unit cell of LNTO, reveal only a small number of lines, which is the consequence of a “molecular” nature of materials.

AB - A promising lithium-indium-oxide (LiInO2) wide band-gap semiconductor for scintillating detection, photoluminescence, and photocatalysis [1-3] was prepared by a mechanochemical solid-state synthetic procedure that can be found elsewhere [3]. Its structure and morphology were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. SEM images show agglomerates of relatively uniform size of around 300 nm spherical-shaped particles of LiInO2 powder, while the XRD pattern confirmed the formation of the nanocrystalline tetragonal structure withamdI /41 space group (no. 141) symmetry. Detailed vibration analysis, together with the assignments of the band modes, was performed through the best-fit match of the experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculated Raman spectrum. Geometry optimizations and vibrational frequencies calculations were conducted using B97-1 functional correlation [4] and LanL2DZ was used as a basis set.

AB - This paper describes the processing, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of the nanocrystalline (NC) niobium and zinc doped titanium-tin-oxide (TTO:NZ) based ceramics. Variety of techniques was employed (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive, Raman and impedance spectroscopy) in the characterization of the obtained TTO:NZ, which confirmed the formation of NC solid-solution matrix with Ti0.8Sn0.2O2 composition. A specific highly dense (approximately 97% of the theoretical density was reached) varistor like microstructure (matrix metal-oxide grains surrounded by the grain-boundary regions) and accordingly resembling electrical properties (breakdown electric field of approximately 130 V/mm and nonlinearity coefficient of α ≈ 6.5) were achieved through double cation doping and elected condition of the mechanochemical solid-state synthesis. Impedance response analysis of TTO:NZ ceramics by means of an equivalent electrical circuit based on the brick-layer model for polycrystalline materials revealed the presence of two temperature dependent electrical relaxation phenomena of the non-Debye type as well as the negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior.

AB - This paper reports on novel cobalt oxide nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in an amorphous silica (SiO2) matrix, synthesized using a modified sol-gel method. SEM and TEM images show as-synthesized particles to aggregate in the shape of spheres and less than 5 nm in size, while XRD and SAED analysis both point to well crystallized cubic spinel cobalt oxide phase with an average crystallite size of about 4.6 nm. Raman analysis confirms the formation of cobalt (III) oxide (Co3O4) NPs. As-synthesized Co3O4 single-nanocrystallite has magnetic properties that correlate with finite size effects and uncompensated surface spins. Temperature dependence of ZFC-FC magnetization curves reveals a sharp peak around 10 K which corresponds to the blocking temperature. A Curie-Weiss behavior of magnetization above 25 K shows lower Neel temperature of the sample compared with its bulk counterpart T-N=40 K (possibly due to crystal defects and nano-dimensionality of the particles). The magnetic measurements exhibit high magnetization at low temperatures (M-s=54.3 emu/g) which can be associated with random canting of the particles surface spins and uncompensated spins in the core which tends to interact ferromagnetically at low temperatures. The initial magnetization curve falls out from the hysteresis loop at 5 K, which could be also the effect of surface spins. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - In this research we prepared nanocrystalline YNbO4:Eu3+ phosphor, i.e. nanophosphor, powder using an efficient mechanochemical method followed by annealing. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that YNbO4:Eu3+ crystallizes in monoclinic structure C2/c where, from the point of view of A and B in ABO(4) compounds, cation coordination can be noted as [6+2, 4+2]. Crystallite size of about 40 nm, was estimated using Debye Scherrers equation. Raman spectroscopy with 785 and 532 rim excitation wavelengths is performed to record a majority of materials phonon modes and to provide more in depth understanding of the YNbO4 structure. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicate that the mechanical treatment during synthesis is causing non-uniformity of the powder microstructure. High resolution photoluminescent measurements upon UV excitation showed intense emission coming from f-f transitions of the europium ion with the lifetime of 0.68 ms, suggesting that the obtained YNbO4:Eu3+ is a good potential phosphor. A comparison of emissive properties with microcrystalline YNbO4:Eu3+ was made and it showed higher values of emission intensity and lifetime of the nanocrystalline sample.(C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225 degrees C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - A new diatomic molecule-containing endohedral fullerenes were prepared by ion implantation technique (introducing negatively charged C-70 into a low temperature lithium plasma column by a strong exial magnetic field). The species prepared were Li"C-70 and Li-2"C-70 and ionized by surface ionization. Their existance was demonstrated through high sensitivity, magnetic mass spectrometer. The corresponding endohedral ions undergo the Rice shrinkwrap mechanism: a mass -analyzed ion spectrum demonstrates the loss of a C-2 unit from the cage. The observed ionization energies of endohedral molecules were 5.1 for all 0.1 eV and 5.3 for all 0.1 eV, respectively.
