Beam-spread determination for luminosity measurement at CEPC

AB  - Any asymmetry in energy of the colliding beams will lead to a longitudinal boost of the center-of-mass frame of colliding particles w.r.t. the laboratory frame and consequently to the counting loss in luminometer due to the loss of colinearity of Bhabha final states. At CEPC running at the Z0 pole, asymmetry in energy of the colliding beams should be known as well as 12.5% of the beam-spread, in order to control the uncertainty of Bhabha count at the level of 10-4. Here we discuss the method, initially proposed for FCCee, to determine variation of the beam-spread from the measurement of the effective center-of-mass energy in e+e-→μ+μ- collisions.

AB  - A prototype of a luminometer, designed for a future e(+)e(-) collider detector, and consisting at present of a four-plane module, was tested in the CERN PS accelerator T9 beam. The objective of this beam test was to demonstrate a multi-plane tungsten/silicon operation, to study the development of the electromagnetic shower and to compare it with MC simulations. The Moliere radius has been determined to be 24.0 +/- 0.6 (stat.) +/- 1.5 (syst.) mm using a parametrization of the shower shape. Very good agreement was found between data and a detailed Geant4 simulation.

abstract = "A prototype of a luminometer, designed for a future e(+)e(-) collider detector, and consisting at present of a four-plane module, was tested in the CERN PS accelerator T9 beam. The objective of this beam test was to demonstrate a multi-plane tungsten/silicon operation, to study the development of the electromagnetic shower and to compare it with MC simulations. The Moliere radius has been determined to be 24.0 +/- 0.6 (stat.) +/- 1.5 (syst.) mm using a parametrization of the shower shape. Very good agreement was found between data and a detailed Geant4 simulation.",

AB  - The measurement of the Higgs production cross-section times the branching ratios for its decays into mu(+)mu(-) and ZZ* pairs at a 1.4 TeV CLIC collider is investigated in this paper. The Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 126 GeV is dominantly produced via WW fusion in e(+)e(-) collisions at 1.4 TeV centre-of-mass energy. Analyses of both decay channels are based on a full simulation of the CLIC_ ILD detector. All relevant physics and beam-induced background processes are taken into account. An integrated luminosity of 1.5 ab(-1) and unpolarised beams are assumed. For the H - GT ZZ* decay, the purely hadronic final state (ZZ* - GT q (q) over barq (q) over bar) is considered as well as ZZ* decays into two jets and two leptons (ZZ* - GT qql(+)l(-)). It is shown that the branching ratio for the Higgs decay into a muon pair times the Higgs production cross-section can be measured with 38% statistical uncertainty. It is also shown that the statistical uncertainty of the Higgs branching ratio for decay into a Z boson pair times the Higgs production crosssection can be measured with a precision of 18.3% and 5.6% for the hadronic and semi-leptonic ZZ* decays, respectively.

AB  - The instrumentation of the very forward region of a detector at a future linear collider (ILC, CLIC) is briefly reviewed. The status of the FCAL R and D activity is given with emphasis on physics and technological challenges. The current status of studies on absolute luminosity measurement, luminosity spectrum reconstruction and high-energy electron identification with the forward calorimeters is given. The impact of FCAL measurements on physics studies is illustrated with an example of the sigma(HWW).BR(H - GT mu(+)mu(-)) measurement at 1.4 TeV CLIC.

AB  - The future compact linear collider (CLIC) offers a possibility for a rich precision physics programme, in particular in the Higgs sector through the energy staging. This is the first paper addressing the measurement of the standard model Higgs boson decay into two muons at 1.4 TeV CLIC. With respect to similar studies at future linear colliders, this paper includes several novel contributions to the statistical uncertainty of the measurement. The latter includes the equivalent photon approximation employed to describe e(+) e(-) and e gamma interactions whenever the virtuality of the mediated photon is smaller than 4 GeV and realistic forward electron tagging based on energy deposition maps in the forward calorimeters, as well as several processes with the Beam-strahlung photons that results in irreducible contribution to the signal. In addition, coincidence of the Bhabha scattering with the signal and background processes is considered, altering the signal selection efficiency. The study is performed using a fully simulated CLIC_ILD detector model. It is shown that the branching ratio for the Higgs decay into a pair of muons BR(H - GT mu(+) mu(-)) times the Higgs production cross-section in WW-fusion sigma(H nu(nu) over bar) can be measured with 38% statistical accuracy at root s = 1.4 TeV, assuming an integrated luminosity of 1.5 ab(-1) with unpolarised beams. If 80 % electron beam polarisation is considered, the statistical uncertainty of the measurement is reduced to 25 %. Systematic uncertainties are negligible in comparison to the statistical uncertainty.

AB  - Detector-plane prototypes of the very forward calorimetry of a future detector at an e(+)e(-) collider have been built and their performance was measured in an electron beam. The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sensor are presented. A deconvolution method is successfully applied, and a comparison of the measured shower shape as a function of the absorber depth with a Monte-Carlo simulation is given.

abstract = "Detector-plane prototypes of the very forward calorimetry of a future detector at an e(+)e(-) collider have been built and their performance was measured in an electron beam. The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sensor are presented. AB  - In this paper we describe a method of luminosity measurement at the future linear collider ILC that estimates and corrects for the impact of the dominant sources of systematic uncertainty originating from the beam-induced effects and the background from physics processes. Based on the relativistic kinematics of the collision frame of the Bhabha process, the beam-beam related uncertainty is reduced to a permille independently of the precision with which the beam parameters are known. With the specific event selection, different from the isolation cuts based on topology of the signal used at LEP, combined with the corrective methods we introduce, the overall systematic uncertainty in the peak region above 80% of the nominal center-of-mass energy meets the physics requirements to be at the few permille level at all ILC energies.

Correction of beam-beam effects in luminosity measurement in the forward region at CLIC

AB  - Procedures for correcting the beam-beam effects in luminosity measurements at CLIC at 3 TeV center-of-mass energy are described and tested using Monte Carlo simulations. The angular counting loss due to the combined Beamstrahlung and initial-state radiation effects is corrected based on the reconstructed velocity of the collision frame of the Bhabha scattering. The distortion of the luminosity spectrum due to the initial-state radiation is corrected by deconvolution. At the end, the counting bias due to the finite calorimeter energy resolution is numerically corrected. To test the procedures, BHLUMI Bhabha event generator, and Guinea-Pig beam-beam simulation were used to generate the outgoing momenta of Bhabha particles in the bunch collisions at CLIC. The systematic effects of the beam-beam interaction on the luminosity measurement are corrected with precision of 1.4 permille in the upper 5% of the energy, and 2.7 permille in the range between 80 and 90% of the nominal center-of-mass energy.

AB  - Deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering events at low photon virtuality, Q(2), with a forward jet, produced at small angles with respect to the proton beam, are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. A subsample of events with an additional jet in the central region is also studied. For both samples, differential cross sections and normalised distributions are measured as a function of the azimuthal angle difference, Delta phi, between the forward jet and the scattered positron in bins of the rapidity distance, Y, between them. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo generators based on different evolution approaches as well as to next-to-leading order calculations in order to test the sensitivity to QCD evolution mechanisms.

AB  - The inclusive photoproduction of D* mesons and of D*-tagged dijets is investigated with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The kinematic region covers small photon virtualities Q(2) LT 2 GeV2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies of 100 LT W-gamma p LT 285 GeV. Inclusive D* meson differential cross sections are measured for central rapidities vertical bar eta(D*)vertical bar LT 1.5 and transverse momenta p(T) (D*) GT 1.8 GeV. The heavy quark production process is further investigated in events with at least two jets with transverse momentum p(T) (jet) GT 3.5 GeV each, one containing the D* meson. Differential cross sections for D*-tagged dijet production and for correlations between the jets are measured in the range vertical bar eta(D*)vertical bar LT 1.5 and p(T) (D*) GT 2.1 GeV. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The heavy quark production process is further investigated in events with at least two jets with transverse momentum p(T) (jet) GT 3.5 GeV each, one containing the D* meson. Differential cross sections for D*-tagged dijet production and for correlations between the jets are measured in the range vertical bar eta(D*)vertical bar LT 1.5 and p(T) (D*) GT 2.1 GeV. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.",

The ratio of the diffractive to the inclusive ep cross section is studied as a function of Q(2), beta and x(P).

AB  - A search for squarks in R-parity violating super-symmetry is performed in e(+/-)p collisions at HERA using the H1 detector. The full data sample taken at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 319 GeV is used for the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 255 pb(-1) of e(+)p and 183 pb(-1) of e(-)p collision data. The resonant production of squarks via a Yukawa coupling. lambda is considered, taking into account direct and indirect R-parity violating decay modes. Final states with jets and leptons are investigated. No evidence for squark production is found and mass dependent limits on lambda are obtained in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and in the Minimal Super-gravity Model. In the considered part of the parameter space, for a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength lambda = 0.3, squarks of all flavours are excluded up to masses of 275 GeV at 95% confidence level, with down-type squarks further excluded up to masses of 290 GeV.

AB  - Measurements of cross sections for events with charm and beauty jets in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented. Events with jets of transverse energy E-T(jet) GT 6 GeV and pseudorapidity - 1.0 LT eta(jet) LT 1.5 in the laboratory frame are selected in the kinematic region of photon virtuality Q(2) GT 6 GeV2 and inelasticity variable 0.07 LT y LT 0.625. Measurements are also made requiring a jet in the Breit frame with E-T(*jet) GT 6 GeV. The data were collected with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 189 pb(-1). The numbers of charm and beauty jets are determined using variables reconstructed using the H1 vertex detector with which the impact parameters of the tracks to the primary vertex and the position of secondary vertices are measured. The measurements are compared with QCD predictions and with previous measurements where heavy flavours are identified using muons.

The structure function F-L is measured by combining the new results with previously published H1 data at E-p = 920 GeV and E-p = 820 GeV. The new measurements are used to test several phenomenological and QCD models applicable in this low Q(2) and low x kinematic domain.

AB  - Inclusive production of D* mesons in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is studied in the range 5 LT Q(2) LT 100 GeV2 of the photon virtuality and 0.02 LT y LT 0.7 of the inelasticity of the scattering process. The observed phase space for the D* meson is (pT) (D*) GT 1.25 GeV and |eta( D*)| LT 1.8. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 348 pb(-1) collected with the H1 detector. Single and double differential cross sections are measured and the charm contribution F-2(c (c) over bar) to the proton structure function F-2 is determined. The results are compared to perturbative QCD predictions at next-to-leading order implementing different schemes for the charm mass treatment and with Monte Carlo models based on leading order matrix elements with parton showers.

AB  - The production of photons at very small angles with respect to the proton beam direction is studied in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA. The data are taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 126 pb(-1). The analysis covers the range of negative four momentum transfer squared at the positron vertex 6 LT Q(2) LT 100 GeV2 and inelasticity 0.05 LT y LT 0.6. Cross sections are measured for the most energetic photon with pseudorapidity eta GT 7.9 as a function of its transverse momentum p(T)(lead) and longitudinal momentum fraction of the incoming proton x(L)(lead). In addition, the cross sections are studied as a function of the sum of the longitudinal momentum fraction x(L)(sum) L of all photons in the pseudorapidity range. GT 7.9. The cross sections are normalised to the inclusive deep-inelastic scattering cross section and compared to the predictions of models of deep-inelastic scattering and models of the hadronic interactions of high energy cosmic rays.

Search for contact interactions in e(+/-)p collisions at HERA H1 Collaboration

AB  - A search for physics beyond the Standard Model in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at high negative four-momentum transfer squared Q(2) is performed in e(+/-)p collisions at HERA. The differential cross section d sigma/dQ(2), measured using the full H1 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 446 pb(-1), is compared to the Standard Model prediction. No significant deviation is observed. Limits on various models predicting new phenomena at high Q(2) are derived. For general four-fermion eeqq contact interaction models, lower limits on the compositeness scale A are set in the range 3.6 TeV to 7.2 TeV. Leptoquarks with masses M-LQ and couplings lambda are constrained to M-LQ/lambda GT 0.41-1.86 TeV and limits on squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetric models are derived. A lower limit on the gravitational scale in 4 + n dimensions of M-S GT 0.9 TeV is established for low-scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions. For the light quark radius an upper bound of R-q LT 0.65 . 10(-18) m is determined. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measurement of the diffractive longitudinal structure function F-L(D) at HERA

AB  - First measurements are presented of the diffractive cross section sigma(ep) - GT eXY at centre-of-mass energies root s of 225 and 252 GeV, together with a precise new measurement at root s of 319 GeV, using data taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007. Together with previous H1 data at root s of 301 GeV, the measurements are used to extract the diffractive longitudinal structure function F-L(D) in the range of photon virtualities 4.0 LT = Q(2) LT = 44.0 GeV2 and fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss 5 x 10(-4) LT = x(P) LT = 3 x 10(-3). The measured F-L(D) is compared with leading twist predictions based on diffractive parton densities extracted in NLO QCD fits to previous measurements of diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering and with a model which additionally includes a higher twist contribution derived from a colour dipole approach. The ratio of the diffractive cross section induced by longitudinally polarised photons to that for transversely polarised photons is extracted and compared with the analogous quantity for inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering.

Prompt photons in photoproduction at HERA

The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 340 pb(-1) collected by the H1 experiment. Cross sections for events with an additional jet are measured as a function of the transverse energy and pseudorapidity of the jet, and as a function of the fractional momenta x(gamma) and x(p) carried by the partons entering the hard scattering process. The correlation between the photon and the jet is also studied. The results are compared with QCD predictions based on the collinear and on the k(T) factorization approaches.

Diffractive electroproduction of rho and phi mesons at HERA

AB  - Diffractive electroproduction of rho and phi mesons is measured at HERA with the H1 detector in the elastic and proton dissociative channels. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51 pb(-1). About 10500 rho and 2000 phi events are analysed in the kinematic range of squared photon virtuality 2.5 LT = Q(2) LT = 60 GeV2, photon-proton centre of mass energy 35 LT = W LT = 180 GeV and squared four-momentum transfer to the proton vertical bar t vertical bar LT = 3 GeV2. The total, longitudinal and transverse cross sections are measured as a function of Q(2), W and vertical bar t vertical bar. The measurements show a transition to a dominantly hard behaviour, typical of high gluon densities and small q (q) over bar dipoles, for Q(2) larger than 10 to 20 GeV2. They support flavour independence of the diffractive exchange, expressed in terms of the scaling variable (Q(2) + M-V(2))/4, and proton vertex factorisation. The spin density matrix elements are measured as a function of kinematic variables. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse cross sections, the ratio of the helicity amplitudes and their relative phases are extracted. Several of these measurements have not been performed before and bring new information on the dynamics of diffraction in a QCD framework. The measurements are discussed in the context of models using generalised parton distributions or universal dipole cross sections.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51 pb(-1).
