AB - This paper describes the pyrolysis of Poplar fluff (from Populus alba) using on-line apparatus, and carbonization process at 850 °C using the fixed bed reactor. Characteristics of pyrolysis products were examined. Elemental and chemical analyses were shown that Poplar fluff has higher energy content characterized by increased content of fibrous structure (particularly cellulose). Independent parallel reactions model very well describes devolatilization process. It was found that increased amount of extractives can significantly affect on increased release of light gaseous products, but declining hydrocarbons, mostly the alkanes. Liquid product is mainly composed of phenolics, aldehydes, acids, esters and ketones. The carbonization process produces the great abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), where naphthalene is the most abundant. Mechanism for PAH's formation was suggested. This study represents the first step in a much wider and more comprehensive way in thermal conversion processes of this type of fuel. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-?-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g -1 for WL-?-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g -1 for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-?-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-?-APS. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing clove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40 °C). Aiming to maximize CO loading in the films with acceptable morphological, structural and thermal properties, CO2 pressure, impregnation time and G:Ch mass ratio were varied. Gelatin fraction in the films of 25-50 wt.%, scCO2 pressures of 10-20 MPa and impregnation time of 2-6 h impregnation favoured the CO loading. Processing of the film with equal gelatin to chitosan mass ratio (G/Ch50:50) at 10 MPa for 2 h yielded sufficiently high loading (56 mg CO/gfilm) without an adverse effect on morphological properties. The G/Ch50:50 film was therefore chosen for structural and thermal analyses. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed successful CO incorporation into the G/Ch50:50 and its interaction with the film. Plasticizing effect of scCO2 and CO on the film was evidenced by DSC. Incorporation of 56 mg CO/gfilm into the G/Ch50:50 didn't affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110 °C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications. © 2019, CI and CEQ. AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB - Unsaturated polyester resin (UPe)-based nanocomposites and fumed silica Aerosil R812S, R805 and R816, and R200 modified with phenyl terminal group, R200NPh, were prepared. UPe resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization with dipropylene glycol in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by acid, hydroxyl, and iodine values and by FTIR and NMR analysis. The microstructural analysis of the prepared nanocomposites, performed by using transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed chain-like aggregates in the polymer matrix. The presence of modified silica nanoparticles had no influence on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polyester matrix. The tensile modulus, stress at break, and hardness of cured products increased with increasing silica content. The impact strength of cured samples was not influenced by the silica content. AB - Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. UPR, based on products of PET depolymerization, and NMF were characterized using FTIR, NMR, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis. Cross-linking density (v), storage modulus (G), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the DMA testing. Tensile (sigma(t)) and flexural (sigma(f)) strength, and micro Vickers hardness indicated good composite performance under static load. Thermal and flame resistant properties were analyzed by TGA/DTG and UL-94 flammability test whereby V-2 category of appropriate composite was achieved. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Optimization of the synthesis of cross-linked macroporous polymer impregnated with hydrous iron oxide and post-process of obtained material by application of freeze/drying technique, produces high performance adsorbent applicable for efficient arsenic removal. Characterization and analysis of adsorbent performances encompass material characterization, equilibrium and kinetic study, influences of interfering ions and modeling of adsorption data in ion free and competitive conditions. Kinetic study, i.e. fitting by Weber-Morris model and single resistance mass transfer model predicts intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters indicate endothermic, feasible and spontaneous nature of adsorption process. Competitive kinetic study in the presence of interfering ions shows low detrimental effect on both capacity and kinetic of arsenic removal. Visual MINTEQ modeling software was used for the prediction of adsorbent performances and interfering ion influences. Preliminary fixed-bed column study was accomplished by the use of Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas and Modified dose-response model. High arsenic removal capacity of 31.0 mg g(-1), at 25 degrees C, and multi-cycle reusability of ER/DETA/FO/FD, significantly affects the affordability of techno-economic indicators based on the operating costs of the process.
