AB - In this study, the structure and substructure of SiO2-Mg phosphate tungsten bronzes, MgPTB, (MgHPW12O40 center dot 29H(2)O) obtained by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method from a silica sol and a MgPTB solution, obtained by the ion exchange method, as precursors were investigated. The mechanism of the formation of aerosol droplets is discussed. Phase composition, structure and substructure of SiO2-MgPTB particles were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Good agreement between the theoretically predicted values for the mean diameters of particles and subparticles (1.27 mu m and 75.4 nm, respectively) and the experimentally obtained ones (1.17 mu m and 65-90 nm) was found. This agreement confirms the applicability of the model to get a satisfactory prediction of the most important data related to the nano-structural design of SiO2-MgPTB powders. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. AB - Due to their new combination of properties and shortage of the experimental data, the radiolysis of a new class of materials, cyclo-olefin copolymers (COC), which are polymerized from norbornene and ethylene using metallocene catalysts, is of great interest to the study of radiation chemistry and physics of polymeric systems. Ethylene-norbornene copolymer, bare and containing 0.45 wt % of the hindered phenolic type of an antioxidant (IRGANOX 1010) was subjected to gamma irradiation (100, 200 and 500 kGy) in the presence of air and in water. The irradiated copolymer was studied using FTIR, UV-vis spectrophotometric and gel content analysis. The insoluble fraction was formed in copolymer irradiated in water with 500 kGy, in bare 36% and in copolymer with an antioxidant 23%. The radiation induced changes in the molecular structure were correlated to the specific heat capacity and the glass transition temperature measured by DSC method.

AB - In this study, the synthesis of thin films of Mg phosphorus doped tungsten bronzes (MgPTB; MgHPW(12)O(40).29H(2)O) by the self-assembly of nano-structured particles of MgPTB obtained using the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method was investigated. As the precursor, MgPTB, prepared by the ionic exchange method, was used. Nano-structured particles of MgPTB were obtained using the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. The nano-structure of the particles used as the building blocks in the MgPTB thin film were investigated experimentally and theoretically, applying the model given in this article. The obtained data for the mean particle size and their size distribution show a high degree of agreement. These previously tailored particles used for the preparation of thin films during the next synthesis step, by their self-assembly over slow deposition on a silica glass substrate, show how it is possible to create thin MgPTB films under advance projected conditions of the applied physical fields with a fully determined nanostructure of their building block particles, with a relatively small roughness and unique physical properties.

AB - The ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique has been, during last three decades, one of the major techniques of synthesis a wide variety of materials. One of the most important among the ionic conductors is lithium phosphorous doped tungsten bronze. The main goal of this investigation is producing full or hallows spheres of these bronzes of very narrow distribution. The mean size and size distribution specter of all materials were determined by the SEM analysis. The results were compared with the values obtained from the theoretical model. The assembled results indicate the possibility of a rigorous particle structure designing of all obtained powders.

AB - The structure and optical properties, the luminescence, of the spherical SiO2:Eu3+ particles have been discussed. These particles were formed using the combination of precursor hydro-thermal synthesis and its ultrasound spray pyrolysis. By the synthesis itself a morphology and/or structural design (particle design) and sub-structural design (sub-particles design/sub-structural elements as the sols, the silicon chains and the tetrahedrons) were defined. The particle mean size and size distribution spectrum of the SiO2:Eu3+ systems were determined by the SEM analysis. The obtained results were compared with those derived from the theoretical model. Distribution uniformity and the size and morphology of the sol particles that constitute the SiO2:Eu3+ systems were determined by the TEM microscopy and by the DLS. The length and composition of silicon chain inside the silicon sol particles was determined using the TGA and the IRS. Optical properties were investigated using luminescence excitation and emission spectroscopy. The assembled results indicate the possibility of a particle structure designing of the SiI2:Eu3+ powder over a various hierarchical levels. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this study we have investigated the structure, size and shape of fullerene-based colloids (nC(60), nC(84)) by atomic force microscopy. The fullerene colloids have been synthesized by solvent exchange method. It was found that the size of fullerene particles depends on solubility treatment. The composition of prepared fullerene-based colloids was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In the FTIR spectra, the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) could be observed. Based on AFM analysis it was observed the transformation of starting polycrystalline fullerene into monocrystalline after long term ultrasonication. It was concluded that solvent molecules transfer their electrons to fullerene molecules on the surface of monocrystal and establish interactions with fullerene electron rich zone. AB - Copolymer poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) is used for obtaining the systems for controlled delivery of medicaments. Its specific characteristics make it suitable for various researches where its synthesis is performed in different ways. Using the system for controlled delivery of medicaments, an equal concentration of the medicament is achieved in the body throughout an extended period of time and it has advantages over the conventional methods. In this paper we present a new solvent/non-solvent chemical method for obtaining DLPLG nanospheres. In the experiment various stabilizers were used in order to examine their influence on morphological characteristics of DLPLG particles. The samples were characterized by Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Stereological analysis.

AB - The most significant mass part of the bony tissue consists of calcium phosphate ceramics. This paper describes method of obtaining fine particles of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) as well as fine particles of biphasic calcium phosphate covered by polymer, poly-lactide-co-glycolide (BCP/PLGA), by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Methods used for characterization of obtained particles of BCP and BCP/PLGA are Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques.
