AB - In this work, thermal diffusivity of crystalline high-density polyethylene samples of various thickness, and prepared using different procedures, was evaluated by transmission gas-microphone frequency photoacoustics. The samples composition analysis and their degree of crystallinity were determined from the wide-angle X-ray diffraction, which confirmed that high-density polyethylene samples, obtained by slow and fast cooling, were equivalent in composition but with different degrees of crystallinity. Structural analysis, performed by differential scanning calorimetry, demonstrated that all of the used samples had different levels of crystallinity, depending not only on the preparing procedure, but also on sample thickness. Therefore, in order to evaluate the samples thermal diffusivity, it was necessary to modify standard photoacoustic fitting procedures (based on the normalization of photoacoustic amplitude and phase characteristics on two thickness levels) for the interpretation of photoacoustic measurements. The calculated values of thermal diffusivity were in the range of the expected literature values. Besides that, the obtained results indicate the unexpected correlation between the values of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity with the degree of crystallinity of the investigated geometrically thin samples. The results indicate the necessity of additional investigation of energy transport in macromolecular systems, as well as the possible employment of the photoacoustic techniques in order to clarify its mechanism.

AB - Hot-injection method for synthesis of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) in organic media was studied. Nanosized ZnIn2S4 is successfully synthesized in oleic acid/oleylamine mixture in different ratios, which are both: complexing and/or capping agents. Nanosheets/nanoscrolls of about 50 nm are obtained. The band gaps of synthesized nanostructures were calculated to be in the range from 2.6 to 3.0 eV, values which are increased compared to bulk value (2.3-2.5 eV). The increase of band gap can be assigned to nanodimensions of the particles. Potential of band edges is calculated using empirical equation and find to be in the range from -0.16 to -0.36 V for conduction band, and from 2.24 to 2.69 V for valence band. By using XRD and TEM techniques, crystal structure and morphology of obtained materials were investigated, and detailed formation and growth mechanism of nanosheets/nanoscroles is proposed accordingly. AB - Experimental verification of thermal memory effects represents a challenge that is important from both fundamental and practical points of view. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the thermal memory effect should lead to thermal resonances in the modulation frequency characteristics of photoacoustic response. Therefore, studies of thermal resonances in photoacoustic response represent an alternative for detection of the thermal memory effect and measurement of thermal memory properties. Since the resonances were not observed, this paper analyzes standard measurement setups and shows that the experimental technique should be optimized to provide a better chance of detection of thermal memory effects by photoacoustic measurements. The results show that a proper selection of modulation frequencies and the knowledge of the approximate transfer function of the electronic part of the photoacoustic measurement system are prerequisites for detection of thermal resonances in the modulation frequency characteristics of photoacoustic response.

AB - This paper presents a model for indirect photoacoustic response that includes thermal memory effects. At low frequencies, the model reduces to the well-known thermal piston model of photoacoustic response given by Rosencweig and Gersho. However, at high frequencies, the presented model predicts resonant behavior of amplitudes and phases of photoacoustic response and determines the respective resonant frequencies. The results of the presented model enable experimental determination of standard thermal properties of solids (thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity), as well as thermal memory properties, thermal relaxation time, and heat propagation speed. AB - On the basis of the generalized photoacoustic response model, which includes the influence of thermal memory on both thermoconducting and thermoelastic components, photoacoustic response of thin films is analysed. It is demonstrated that the influence of thermal memory is manifested at frequencies above certain boundary frequency, which depends on thermal memory properties of the sample and its depth. A linear relation, linking heat propagation velocity and measured signal, is derived. Taking into account the confinement of the frequency range imposed by the measuring system, it is indicated that thermal memory properties of non-cristaline thin films can be determined in a photoacoustic experiment.

AB - If the model of the photoacoustic (PA) response of an investigated system contains many unknown parameters, as is the case with multilayered samples, then the inverse procedure for the calculation of the parameters is highly sensitive to experimental noise. The problem cannot be solved by developing the experimental setup or by data acquisition methods, but only by an improvement of the theoretical approach. This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of the effective medium approximation to the PA response of multilayered samples. It has been shown that the theory is not applicable to the general case, and explicit expressions for the effective values of thermal diffusivity and heat propagation speed have been derived for some special cases.

AB - We report synthesis and characterization of gold NPs/PVA composite films. Gold colloidal NPs were introduced into a PVA matrix by simple solution-casting method to obtain homogenous, transparent, and colored films. NPs and NC films with different contents of inorganic phase (0.7, 1.4, and 2.1 wt %) were characterized by UV/Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. Dimensions of the colloidal NPs were obtained by TEM (d similar to 15 +/- 3 nm) and compared with results obtained by AFM of NC films. Comparison of thermal properties of the pure PVA and NC films showed that thermal stability is slightly reduced. DSC measurements revealed that T-g and melting temperatures of NCs are higher compared to pure PVA films.

AB - In this study, multilayered structures consisting of eight (Al/Ti) bilayers deposited by d.c. ion sputtering onto Si (100) wafers, to a total thickness of similar to 300 nm were treated in air with a picosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG laser in a defocused regime. Irradiation was done with 200 successive pulses, at 1,064-nm wavelength, energy per pulse 15 mJ, the incidence angle of similar to 45 degrees, covering an area of 2-mm in diameter. The samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that laser irradiation-induced melting and a progressed Al-Ti nanoalloying within the top four bilayers (up to a depth of similar to 150 nm), while the underlying part of the multilayered structure remained intact. Another interesting result is that of a regularly rippled surface topography (similar to 1.4-mu m period and 100-nm amplitude) developed throughout the zone of the melted and reacted material.

AB - Ion bombardment is a suitable tool to modify the optical properties of polymers. In the present study the effect of ion bombardment on the optical absorption of ethylene-norbornene copolymer (TOPAS) was studied using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and Raman spectroscopy. Polymer samples were bombarded with 60 key C4+ and N4+ ion beams to various fluences ranging from 1.0 x 10(13) to 1.0 x 10(16) cm(-2). The indirect and direct band gaps have been determined. The values of direct band gaps have been found to be greater than the corresponding values of the indirect band gaps. Activation energy has been investigated as the function of ion fluences. The number of carbon atoms per conjugated length is determined according to modified Taucs equation. The correlation between the optical band gap, activation energy for optical transition and the number of carbon atoms per conjugated length as well as chemical structure changes induced by ion beams irradiation have been discussed in the case of ethylene-norbornene copolymer. AB - The kinetics of thermal degradation of polystyrene/Fe(2)O(3) composites was studied by dynamic thermogravimetry. The samples were heated in nitrogen atmosphere, applying three different heating rates 5, 20, and 40 degrees C/min. We calculated kinetic parameters using modified KAS isoconversional method. Results showed that polystyrene in all composites has higher thermal degradation activation energies compared to pure polystyrene. Maximal activation energy of thermal degradation is achieved for PS/Fe(2)O(3) composite with about 10% of filler. Vyazovkin model-free method was used to predict thermal degradation parameters.

AB - Structural changes in multilayered AlN/TiN nanocomposites upon Ar(+) ion irradiation were investigated. Reactive sputtering was used to deposit (AlN/TiN) x 5 multilayers on Si(1 0 0), to a total thickness of similar to 270 nm. Argon was implanted at 200 keV, to 5 x 10(15)-4 x 10(16) ions cm(-2). The as-deposited multilayers had a very fine columnar nanocrystalline structure, the width of individual grains was up to similar to 10 nm. It was found that this immiscible system exhibits a high ion radiation stability, the AlN and TiN layers remaining well separated, with sharp interfaces. Ion irradiation induced small local density changes and only a slight increase in individual grains, in the region where most damage was deposited by the impact ions. For the highest irradiation fluence there was also some migration of Ti into AlN in this region, which was assigned to excess nitrogen within the AlN layers. Due to these small structural changes, ion irradiation enhanced the mechanical strength of the multilayered nanocomposites.

AB - In this paper we demonstrate a theoretical study for photothermal measurements on inhomogeneous coatings. First, a general photothermal mathematical model for thermal gradient materials is presented. Then, we discuss the effects of inhomogeneous thermal properties in photothermal amplitude and phase spectra of coatings. Finally, a method for quantitative depth profiling that makes use of prior knowledge about the type of profile existing in a sample to reduce the instabilities associated with the mathematically ill conditioned task is demonstrated.

AB - The calculation of photothermal response detected by a photothermal microscope is presented. By using a technique based on Greens functions and integral transforms, a model for laser-induced temperature distribution functions has been derived. The mathematical method for solution of inverse problem is proposed. It suggests that photothermal microscopy, besides imaging subsurface of solids, has the potential for quantitative thermal analysis of varioussamples.

AB - In this work, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by multiple charged nitrogen ions have been reported. The properties of as-deposited and irraditated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and AFM analysis. After irradiation by multiple charged nitrogen ions (N(2+), N(5+)) new bondings in fullerene films have been formed and the amorphicity has been enhanced at higher doses. Raman and FTIR spectra showed structural changes of deposited films depending on the energy and implantation dose. AFM analysis showed that the ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. At lower doses the surface order has been characterized by carbon clusters of 500 nm. At higher doses significantly smaller clusters have been formed (200 nm).

AB - An analytical model that describes surface temperature variations of media with thermal memory stimulated by laser pulses was developed. The influence of thermal memory for semi-infinite sample was analyzed by comparing our results with classical model results which neglect the thermal memory of materials for different pulse widths and for different pulse shapes. It was shown that this influence was outstanding around steep changes of the incentive flux and for short incident pulses.

AB - Samples of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) oriented via solid-state stretching at elevated temperature (draw ratios of 1, 3, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15) were analyzed. Gel content measurements, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the effects of high absorbed doses of gamma irradiation, up to 700 kGy. Conclusions derived according to the different methods are compared. The results indicate that the changes in the structure of pristine iPP due to orientation also significantly affect the radiation induced changes in crystallinity, melting behavior and gel production. The role of highly strained tie molecules in radiation-induced increase in crystallinity at doses lower than 250 kGy, for oriented iPP is discussed in terms of the scission and strain-energy relief process on the crystals followed by the growth of new, thin-crystal, lamellae. At higher doses (300, 500 and 700 kGy) radiation-induced decrease in crystallinity is explained in terms of the effect of crosslinking. Orientation induced supermolecular structural changes are related to the decrease in the gel production with draw ratio. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

AB - In thermosets and semicrystalline and/or amorphous thermoplastics, processing can result in internal molecular stress, which relieves on reheating (thermal history effects). The relief of these stresses appears as a small endothermic relaxation even after glass transition. Non reversing transitions in polymers also indicate the existence of thermal history effects. These effects can be modeled thereby improving interpretation of many experimental results. In this paper, a mathematical model for thermal history effects and heat flow in thermoplastics has been developed.

AB - Hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HAp/PLL) composite biomaterial can be obtained by different processing methods. Three-dimensional blocks of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial with mechanical characteristics close to the natural bone tissue can be obtained by hot pressing procedure. Effects of synthesis and compacting on the structure and characteristics of the HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial were studied in this work. Using wade angle X-ray structural analyses (WAXS), differentially scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, the changes occurring in the material during synthesis and hot pressing were monitored. Surface microstructure was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron-dispersion analysis (EDX). The results obtained indicate a possible decrease in the degree of crystallinity with hot pressing time increase. A block of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial with 1.6 times lower crystallinity of the polymer phase was obtained by hot pressing in a given time interval with a maximum of 60 minutes. Results of TG analysis show that PLLA stability decreases with increasing hot pressing time, and vice versa. IR study proved that neither destructive changes in constituents nor formation of new phases occurred during hot pressing.

AB - Differential scanning calorimetry measurements (DSC) were used to study the effect of gamma irradiation on the melting behavior of drawn low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The drawing, to various draw ratios (5, 6, 9, 10 and 11), was performed via solid-state stretching at 80 degrees C. It was found that for the lower doses (50kGy) there is an increase in melting temperature with increasing draw ratio, A. For the higher doses, the melting temperatures decrease slightly. The increase in heat of fusion with absorbed dose is explained in terms of the strain-energy relief process on the crystals by the scission of tie-molecules and the growth of new thin lamellae. AB - Drawn and undrawn samples of gamma-irradiated isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were aged under 0.5 MPa of oxygen at 80 degrees C. Radiation-induced and post-irradiation effects were observed using infra-red spectroscopy. Changes of the elongation at break and strength at break as functions of aging time and draw ratio were determined from the stress-strain measurements. It is shown that the strength at break of drawn and gamma-irradiated iPP after accelerated aging for more than 20 h is still high ( GT 50 N/mm(2)). These data were related to the radiation effects in drawn and undrawn iPP.
