AB  - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB  - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB  - We have investigated drug loading and release from thermosensitive gel emulsions with external triggering by an alternating magnetic field (AMF) for on-demand drug delivery. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles dispersed in gel emulsions were used to study the loading and release capabilities, with the stable nitroxide radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy ( TEMPO) serving as the model drug. AMF activation gave similar results to temperature activation in a water bath at 37 degrees C, showing that the principal effect of the AMF is a temperature increase without burst release. These results suggest that the system could play an important role in the development of advanced drug delivery. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

AB  - Magnetic properties of a large assembly of ultrathin graphitic particles obtained by heavy sonication of graphite powder dispersed in N-methylpyrrolidone were measured by electron-spin resonance (ESR). The ESR signal was decomposed into one narrow and one broad component. The narrow component was associated with localized Curie-type defects. The temperature dependence of the predominant broad component points to a transition to a superparamagnetic-like state at 25 K. By performing the density-functional-theory calculations for graphene with selected extended defects (the sheet edges, zigzag chains of chemisorbed H atoms, and pentagon-octagon rows), we found considerable magnetic moments at C atoms in their vicinities. We attribute the magnetism in the graphitic particles to the localized electronic states near the defects in the network of the p electrons of graphene. The ferromagnetic (FM) correlations among magnetic moments at carbon atoms near the edges are not able to give rise to a long-range FM order.
