AB  - The main goal of this study was the evaluation of physical–chemical, as well as radiological properties of residual materials used for geopolymer synthesis and those final products as a possible application as new materials in a civil engineering industry. Concentration of K and radionuclides from the U and Th decay series in waste precursors, their metaphases and geopolymer samples synthetized by alkali activation were determined together with corresponding absorbed dose rate (D˙) and the annual effective dose rate. Natural activity concentrations in the alkali-activated material (geopolymer) were found to be lower than that of both residual materials and calcined ones.

Surface layer morphology of the high fluence Fe implanted polyethylene - Correlation with the magnetic and optical behavior

AB  - Fe/Polyethylene nanocomposite was synthesized by ion beam implantation of 56Fe+ into bulk high-density polyethylene. Nanoscale surface morphology along with magnetic and optical behavior was investigated. The aim of the research was to investigate changes of polyethylene's surface layer morphology with the change of Fe implantation fluence in the high fluence range and to find correlations with the magnetic and optical behavior. Four implantation fluences were applied: 5 × 1016, 1 × 1017, 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1017 cm−2, while the implantation energy was 95 keV. Concentration profiles of implanted Fe were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, showing Fe concentration profile maxima closer to the surface with increasing implantation fluence. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy showed the formation of metallic nanoparticles with sizes in a range from below 1 nm up to few tens of nanometers, depending on the fluence, and for the highest implantation fluence, a continuous layer was formed. Magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry demonstrates weak ferromagnetic behavior for the 2 higher fluences, and superparamagnetic for the 2 lower fluences. The UV-VIS remission function spectra show the peak in the UV region, which we attribute to iron nanoparticles.

AB  - In this work, the performances of two ionic liquid matrices (ILMs) with the same ammonium counterpart for mass spectrometric analysis of the insoluble and soluble sucralfate were compared. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) was performed assisted by the butylammonium salts of α-cyano-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCAB) and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBB). CHCAB has a higher IE than DHBB, but better optical properties. CHCAB is more suitable for the analysis of sucralfate, although molecular ions of both compounds were detectable only with low intensities. Thus, optical properties of ILMs are crucial to enhance the sensitivity of MALDI MS detection of polysulfated oligosaccharides. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

AB  - In the presented paper, changes of high-density polyethylene's (HDPE) surface properties along with the changes of chemical composition, as a consequence of Fe ion implantation with different fluences, were investigated. Applied implantation fluences were as follows: 5 × 1016, 1 × 1017, 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1017 ions cm−2, while the implantation energy was 95 keV. The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Four point contact probe, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. Significant changes in the chemical composition were found by XPS and FTIR, which were followed by changes in surface morphology, increase of roughness, and decrease of sheet resistance that has a percolation threshold that starts for the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2. Surface free energy increases as a consequence of implantation, up to the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2, and then decreases for the 2 higher fluences. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the hydrophobicity of geopolymers, new alumino-silicate materials and the influence of Si/Al ratio on their surface properties. Contact angle measurement (CAM) as reliable indicator of hydrophobicity was determined for synthesized geopolymers using water and ethylene-glycol as reference liquids. Geopolymers were synthesized from various precursors: Kaolin, bentonite and diatomite. Characterization of phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. Contact angle measurements confirmed that the geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin are the most porous, which can be explained by the smallest Si/Al ratio. The maximum value of contact angle and free surface energy (110.2 mJ/m2) has been achieved for geopolymer synthesized by diatoms (GPMD). SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel and is significantly different from the micrographs of other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. © 2018 Authors.

AB  - Low-temperature plasma is widely used in many surface treatment technologies for modifications of the physical properties of different polymeric materials. In the present work, we have examined the modification of acoustical properties of natural cellulose materials (cotton, hemp) by the radio-frequency argon plasma. We have observed an increase of the sound absorption coefficient due to the plasma treatment for certain range of applied powers. An analysis of elementary processes which happened during plasma–material interaction was conducted. Additional analyses related to material characterizations were performed in order to resolve structural and chemical changes of plasma treated materials. The micro-mechanical modification of treated materials, which happened upon the retrieved structural and chemical changes, was related to the modification of its acoustical properties in order to explain the observed effect. AB  - The aim of this study was determination of physical-chemical and radiological characteristics of kaolin and products of alkali-activated thermally treated kaolin (geopolymer). Also, the objective of presented research was to investigate the possibility of kaolin application as a pigment or as a raw material for obtaining geopolymer materials as a relatively new ones in a building material industry. Physicochemical characterization of one set of samples was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Activity concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides in kaolin, metakaolin and geopolymer were determined. The absorbed dose rate (D) and the annual effective dose rate (EDR), calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2000 report, are also presented in this paper. Kaolin was heat-treated on 750oC and specific activity of natural radionuclide in metakaolin increased up to 1.6, while measured specific activities in geopolymer were the lowest.

Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations of collisions and following chemical kinetics considerations lead to the conclusion that chemical bonds between gold atoms and PE chains are formed. We have identified and characterized by a DFT method various stable structures with C-Au, C-Au-C, C-Au-H and C-Au center dot center dot center dot H-2 types of chemical bonds. The binding energies (BE) of C-Au bonds are as high as 227 kJ mol(-1) and the bond analysis reveals a covalent bonding character. For the experimental detection of these structures in gold implanted PE, we predicted characteristic infra-red (IR) frequencies. The C-Au stretching vibrational modes lie around 500 cm(-1). Other characteristic frequencies lie in a band between 730 cm(-1) and 1500 cm(-1).

Structural and chemical properties of thermally treated geopolymer samples

AB  - This article presents the results of the compositional, structural and morphological study of geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin and an alkali activator. The study involved the investigation of the structural and chemical properties of the geopolymer, in addition to thermally treated geopolymers up to 600 and 900 degrees C. The precursor of the geopolymer, and the geopolymer samples before and after the thermal treatment, were investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analysis. The corrected average value of the ratio of silicon and aluminum in the geopolymer samples (SiGp:Al) is about 1.46, which suggests that the obtained geopolymer samples represent a mixture of roughly equal amounts of sialate and sialate-siloxo units. Annealing the geopolymer samples at 600 degrees C decreases the amount of Si-ONa bonds and induces the cross-linking of polymer changes. At the same time, other sodium containing alumino-silicate phases are created. The thermal treatment at 900 degrees C leads to a considerable reduction of oxygen and particularly sodium, followed by significant morphological changes i.e. formation of a complex porous structure. Additionally, a new semicrystaline phase appears. Both XRD and XPS results imply that this new phase may be nepheline and it is plausible that this phase begins to nucleate at temperatures below 900 degrees C.

AB  - Structural and optical properties of nanometric titanium oxide (TixOy) films obtained by cathodic arc plasma deposition were investigated. Phase analysis by x-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of anatase, rutile, Ti2O3, Ti4O7 and amorphous phases. Scanning electron microscopy images showed well-developed surface morphology with nano-patterns. Spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed film thicknesses of 53 and 50 nm, variable refractive indices dependent on the light wavelength and close to zero extinction coefficients for wavelengths higher than 500 nm. On the basis of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy data and using the Tauc equation, band gap values for direct and indirect electron transitions were determined.

AB  - The main goal of the presented research was the preliminary investigation of possibility of red mud - Hungarian dump sites Almasfuzito (sample A) and Ajka (sample B) - application as a pigment or as a raw material for use in the construction materials industry. Also, the aim of this work was the characterization of red mud as industrial waste generated by the Bayer process in the aluminum industry - which may cause environmental problems if appropriate treatment is not carried out. The main mineral phases of both red mud are hematite (Fe2O3), calcite (CaCO3), gibbsite (Al(OH)(3)) and they consists of particles of median particle size 2.1 mu m (sample A) and 2.5 mu m (sample B) and have a characteristic red color, which was the reason for its testing for use in the industry of building materials as a pigment for standard concrete mixtures. The radionuclides content in the samples was determined by gamma spectrometry, and the radiological hazards originating from U-238, Th-232, K-40 in the samples, were assessed through the radium equivalent activity, and the external radiation hazard index. The absorbed dose rate and the annual effective dose were calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2010 report and the results are presented in this paper.

AB  - In this work, Glancing Angle Deposition technique was used for obtaining nanostructured nickel thin film with vertical posts on glass substrate which was positioned 75 degrees with respect to the substrate normal and rotated with a suitable constant speed. The obtained nickel thin film was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. It was found that the deposited thin film consists of 94.0 at.% of nickel. Magnetic properties of the deposited thin film were determined by Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Microscopy. According to the obtained coercivity values, it can be concluded that the nickel thin film shows uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

AB  - Metamaterials based on TixOy with ultra-high and near-zero refractive indices were obtained by DC magnetron sputtering. The data on refractive indices, extinction coefficients, film thickness, and band gaps, obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry, showed very high potential of these materials as metamaterials. Phase analysis performed by XRD revealed the presence of titanium phases with lower titanium oxidation states resulting from high concentration of oxygen vacancies, which are crucial for such extraordinary jumps and drops of refractive indices. Numerous band gaps for direct and indirect electron transitions additionally confirmed unique properties of these materials.

Variations in optical parameters with thickness correlated with structural, chemical and electrical properties of nanostructured nickel thin films were studied. The results showed that deposit is porous and consists of nano-scaled columns, which grow perpendicular to the substrate. It was found that the size of the columns and the surface roughness change with film thickness. Spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed that the refractive index and extinction coefficient varied with thickness, which can be correlated with changes in microstructure of Ni films. Additionally, the relationship between the film microstructure and its resistivity was also analyzed. It was found that the variations in Ni films resistivity could be attributed to the changes in the width of the columns. The increasing of layer thickness leads to overall decrease of optical resistivity of nickel thin films. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Characterization of obtained Ni films was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by Magneto-Optical Kerr effect measurements (MOKE). The effect of thickness on structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel films has been studied. Observed changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in magnetic parameters obtained by MOKE measurements. It was found that for thinner Ni films, the enhancement of coercivity is due to the surface roughness of Ni films, while for thicker films the observed asymmetry of coercivity is due to the mechanism of column size growth. AB  - Bimetallic electrodes prepared by Pd nanoislands spontaneously deposited on polycrystalline platinum, Pt(poly), at submonolayer coverage were explored for methanol oxidation in alkaline media. Characterization of obtained Pd/Pt(poly) nanostructures was performed ex situ by AFM imaging, spectroscopic ellipsometry and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In situ characterization of the obtained electrodes and subsequent methanol oxidation measurements were performed by cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M KOH. Platinum surface with 35% Pd coverage exhibited the highest catalytic activity for methanol oxidation in alkaline media, exceeding those of bare Pt and Pd. Both synergistic and electronic effects are responsible for such enhanced catalysis. The origin of the synergistic effect and possible reaction pathways for methanol oxidation were discussed taking into account the activity of obtained bimetallic electrodes for the oxidation of CO and formaldehyde, as the most probable reaction intermediates. AB  - У овој докторској дисертацији су испитана морфолошка и структурнасвојства наночестица сребра и злата које су добијене јонском имплантацијом уполиетилен велике густине (HDPE). Поред основних својстава испитане су ипотенцијалне примене ових материјала као и њихово понашање у реалнимусловима. Јони сребра и злата имплантирани су дозама од 1.1015, 5.1015 и1.1016 јона/cm2 и енергијама од 50, 100, 150 и 200 keV. Избор ових доза иенергија су последица детаљних истраживања о могућностима постизањаоптималних наноструктурних својстава система метал – полимер.Прелиминарни прорачуни пројектованих домета, расподеле јона,енергетских губитака и потенцијалних радијационих оштећења извршени супрограмским пакетом SRIM (Stopping Range of Ions in Matters). Имплантиранејонске врсте у полимерној основи су потврђене методама Рендгенскедифракције (XRD), Масене спектрометрије (ICP – MS), Рендгенскефотоелектронске спектроскопије (XPS) и трансмисионе и сканирајућеелектронске микроскопије (TEM, SEM). Оптичка својства и степен активацијеполимера наночестицама сребра и злата испитивани су спектроскопскомелипсометријом (SE). Узорци HDPE са инкорпорираним наноструктурнимчестицама даље су карактерисане следећим методама: Микроскопијом у пољуатомских сила (AFM), применом тачкастог (tapping mode) и фазног начинаснимања (phase mode) извршене су топографска и фазна анализа променанасталих на површини HDPE; Промене у структури попречног пресека као ианализе зона радијационог оштећења праћене су микроскопијом сапроменљиво - контролисаном силом (AFM – FMM) заснованој наконтролисаним осцилацијама на областима различите вискозности уматеријалу. Анализом функције спектра снаге (PSD) испитане су површинске појаве настале јонском имплантацијом и представљени су основни механизмиреакција на површини анализом нагиба PSD функције. Додатне информације оповршинским својствима и адхезивности површина добијених јонскомимплантацијом добијене су мерењем контактног угла и израчунавањемповршинске енергије. Разлике у дозама имплантације као и енергијамаусловиле су настанак површина различитих поларности и афинитета.Промене у хемијском саставу површине потврђене су методоминфрацрвене спектроскопије FTIR-ATR (FTIR - attenuated total reflectance), гдеје уочен настанак нових хемијских веза услед јонске имплантације.Симулација услова реалне експлоатације извршена је у озон генераторуу току од 2 сата. Узорци имплантирани јонима злата различитих енергијапоказали су различиту отпорност на дејство озона. Најстабилнији међу њима јеузорак имплантиран јонима злата енергије 150 keV. Наноструктурни системиметал полимер испитани су на инхибицију на два најчешћа клиничкамикроорганизма S. aureus и E. coli. Због своје потенцијалне примене убиомедицини веома је важно испитати понашање ових система умикробиолошки непожељним срединама. Истраживања су показала да су јонисребра и злата добри инхибитори у случају S. aureus док је за инхибицију E. coliполимерни материјал потребно додатно оплеменити неким антибиотицима илибиоцидима.
AB  - In this doctoral dissertation the morphological and structural properties ofsilver and gold nanoparticles, obtained by ion implantation in high densitypolyethylene (HDPE) have been studied. In addition to the basic properties, potentialapplications of these materials and their behavior were also investigated in realconditions. Silver and gold ions have been implanted with doses of 1.1015, 5.1015 and1.1016 ions/cm2 and energies of 50, 100, 150 and 200 keV. The selection of thedoses and energies were the result of detailed research on the possibilities ofachieving optimal properties of nanostructured systems metal - polymer.Preliminary calculations of the projected range, distribution of ions, energyloss and potential radiation damage were performed using software package SRIM(Stopping Range of Ions in Matters). The presence of implanted ion species in thepolymer matrix was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mass spectrometry ICP –MS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmition and scanning electronmicroscopy (TEM, SEM). Optical properties and the degree of the polymer activationwith nanoparticles of silver and gold were performed using spectroscopicellipsometry (SE). Confirmed nanostructured particles incorporated in the polymermatrix are further characterized by the following methods: Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM), using the tapping mode and phase mode for topographic and phase analysisof the changes on the HDPE surface; Changes in the cross section as well as theanalysis of radiation damage zone were performed using Force ModulationMicroscopy (AFM – FMM), based on the controlled oscillations in areas with differentviscosities in the material. Power Spectral Density (PSD) was used for theinvestigation of the surface phenomena caused by ion implantation and presentedthe basic surface reactions mechanisms analysing the slope of PSD functions.Additional information on surface properties and surface adhesion obtained by ionimplantation were obtained using the Contact Angle Measurement (CAM) and calculating the free surface energy. Differences in the implantation doses andenergies have caused the formation of different surface polarity and affinity.Changes in the chemical composition of the surface were confirmed usinginfrared spectroscopy FTIR-ATR (FTIR - attenuated total reflectance), where newchemical bonds are obtained due to ion implantation.Simulation of the conditions of the real operation was performed in the ozonegenerator during the 2 hours. Samples implanted with gold ions of different energiesshowed different resistance to ozone. The most stable among them was the goldimplanted sample with the energy of 150 keV. Nanostructured metal – polymersystems were tested for inhibition of the two most common clinical microorganism S.aureus and E. coli. Because of their potential applications in biomedicine it is veryimportant to examine the behavior of these systems in microbiological undesirableareas. The obtained results have shown that silver and gold ions are good inhibitorsin the case of S. aureus, while for the inhibition of E. coli, polymeric material shouldbe further enhanced using certain antibiotics or biocides.

AB  - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

AB  - Lead distribution and immobilization in cultivated soils in Rudovci, Serbia was investigated. Sampling was carried out by the method recommended by ICP-Forests Manual, 2006, Part III Sampling and analysis of Soil. The sampling geometry was systematically designed with a random component. The maximum sampling depth was 100 cm and lead distribution was monitored during 425 days. First sample was taken after 50 days and every single next sample was taken after 50 days except for the last sample which was taken after 25 days. Before the profile contamination, physical and chemical soil analysis has been done. The cation exchange capacity of the soil was done because media affect mobility cations (anions) in soil. The effect of immobilizations of Pb is highest in the second horizons where the depth of investigating soil is 25-50 cm.

AB  - Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated on polycrystalline palladium, Pd(poly), in acid and alkaline solutions using rotating-disc electrode technique. Pd(poly) was prepared in non-aqueous media which provided surface with good quality and reproducibility. According to cyclic voltammetry curves and to the analysis of polarization curves for ORR and of ones obtained separately for hydrogen peroxide reduction/oxidation reactions, ORR in both media proceeds mainly through 4e-series pathway in the potential regions where Pd surface is either oxide free or oxidized to PdOH. ORR occurs partly through 2e-reduction in the potential region where PdO is present on the surface. As revealed by cyclic voltammetry, spectroscopic ellipsometry and by atomic force microscopy, Pd(poly) surface undergoes both topography and chemical changes during ORR. Effect of UV/ozone treatment on the nanoscale surface properties of gold implanted polyethylene

AB  - The effect of ultraviolet (UV) ozone treatment on the surface properties of gold implanted high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated at a nanoscale using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). HDPE samples were modified by the implantation of gold ions at a dose of 5 x 10(15) ions/cm(2), using energies of 50, 100, 150, and 200 keV, and subsequently treated with UV/ozone. AFM surface topography images revealed that after UV/ozone treatment, the surface roughness of all Au/HDPE samples increased, while Power Spectral Density function increased only for samples implanted using higher energies, with a maximum for 150 keV. The chemical surface composition was homogenous in all cases, which was evidenced by appearance of single peaks in the histograms obtained from the phase AFM images. For UV/ozone treated samples, the shift of the peaks positions in the histograms to the higher values of the phase lag with respect to untreated ones indicated the decrease of surface hardness. abstract = "The effect of ultraviolet (UV) ozone treatment on the surface properties of gold implanted high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated at a nanoscale using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). HDPE samples were modified by the implantation of gold ions at a dose of 5 x 10(15) ions/cm(2), using energies of 50, 100, 150, and 200 keV, and subsequently treated with UV/ozone. AFM surface topography images revealed that after UV/ozone treatment, the surface roughness of all Au/HDPE samples increased, while Power Spectral Density function increased only for samples implanted using higher energies, with a maximum for 150 keV. The chemical surface composition was homogenous in all cases, which was evidenced by appearance of single peaks in the histograms obtained from the phase AFM images. For UV/ozone treated samples, the shift of the peaks positions in the histograms to the higher values of the phase lag with respect to untreated ones indicated the decrease of surface hardness. An in vitro atomic force microscopic study of commercially available dental luting materials

AB  - Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the surface roughness parameters of four different types of dental luting agents used for cementation of implant restorations. Method and materials: Five specimens (8 mm high and 1 mm thick) of each cement were made using metal ring steelless molds. Atomic Force Microscope was employed to analyze different surface texture parameters of the materials. Bearing ratio analysis was used to calculate the potential microgap size between the cement and implant material and to calculate the depth of the valleys on the cement surface, while power spectral density (PSD) measurements were performed to measure the percentage of the surface prone to bacterial adhesion. Results: Glass ionomer cement showed significantly lower value of average surface roughness then the other groups of the materials (P LT 0.05) which was in line with the results of Bearing ratio analysis. On the other side, PSD analysis showed that zinc phosphate cement experience the lowest percentage of the surface which promote bacterial colonization. Conclusion: Glas ionomer cements present the surface roughness parameters that are less favorable for bacterial adhesion than that of zinc phosphate, resin-modified glass ionomer and resin cements. AB  - Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of ZrC-SiC composite powders in the presence of LiYO2 sintering additive was studied. The starting powders were obtained by a carbothermal reduction (CTR) of natural mineral zircon (ZrSiO4), which provided an intimate mixing of in-situ created ZrC and SiC powders. This composite powder and LiYO2 as additive were densified by spark plasma sintering. Microstructural features of the composite were investigated by XRD, SEM/EDS and AFM analysis. The sintered composite material possesses promising mechanical properties and excellent cavitation resistance which was observed with a cavitation erosion test. The values of Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness of the composite material are 20.7 GPa and 5.07 MPam(1/2), respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Histograms obtained from phase AFM images indicated a qualitative change in the chemical composition of the surface during implantation with gold ions with different energies. Depth profiles obtained experimentally from cross-sectional Force Modulation Microscopy images and ones obtained from a theoretical simulation are in agreement for gold ions energies lower than 100 keV. The deviation that was observed for higher energies of the gold ions is explained by carbon precipitation in the near surface region of the HDPE, which prevented the penetration of gold ions further into the depth of the sample.
